Songs from the 50s, 60s & 70s were so much a part of my childhood. Surprisingly enough I am a GenZ kid born in 2002 but my mom used to have a Sony Ericsson flip phone throughout the later 90s. That was a hidden treasure for me. She had a huge collection of over 50 songs (quite much if you consider the storage capacity of a 90s era phone). My mom was and still is a huge fan of Lata Mangeshkar. I used to play them on loop whenever I had the chance and we used to listen to them together. The amount of nostalgia I have towards Lata Di's "Sheesha Ho Ya Dil Ho", "Jai Jai Shiv Shankar", "Ek Radha Ek Meera", " Megha Re Megha Re" is just astounding. So many memories. RIP LATA MANGESHKAR ♥️✨

We used to watch Chitrahar on DD National and from there I came to love those Hindi songs. My mom doesn't listen to those songs much now but I love listening to them and she calls me an old soul for that😁

So many interesting things in that video!! I am one of those middle aged boys 😊you talked about (40+) who fell in love with music in 80s, 90s (and a lot of old stuff that our parents loved from 50s to 80s that was dominated by Raafi Saab, Lata di, Mukesh ji and Kishore da) and then felt a huge change in the entire Bollywood music industry from 2000 onwards...the biggest change was how much more songs became rythm focused (we always had good percussion as a heartbeat of songs always but this change was more of discarding all other aspects and focussing on that winning beat which would dominate the song to become a party number or easy catch phrase)...we have a bit of revival from the time Aashique2 came around but you can find a lot of remakes and a lack of originality in terms of melody these days (again, I am generalizing and this doesn't mean that you had brilliant songs in any era but this was the trend as noted by a late 70s kid)...Lyricism was a huge part of Bollywood music and almost all of the old songs had amazing poetry behind them, the poetry and romanticism of old songs (with rich imagery and philosophy behind it) changed to a more obvious and common lyrics in 90s which was still pretty good but accessible to everyone and in 2000s, lyrics just became an unimportant factor of songs (one of the reason could be that instead of implying and generating the rich imagery through lyrics, now you had enough money and technical advancement to actually show it on screen but this wasn't the sole reason), again we had seen at least a revival of lyrics and soulful songs in the last few years but its still few and far in between for me to be really a big fan of the Bollywood industry these days (apart from certain artists like Arijith, Shreya and some composers like Amit Trivedi)
In general, I am also really happy that you manage to get a glimpse to a magical singer called Jagjith Singh in this compilation...It was only yesterday that I was commenting about recommending Ghazals and there you are listening to one of the best ghazal singers from India called Jagjith and infact 'Tum Itna Jo' which you heard here was one of the several that I was considering recommending as a gradual introduction to Ghazals...

    1. That 90's actress is Kajol, and she along with SRK gave some outstanding movies.
    2. In 2013, Arijit Singh really changed the bollywood industry music game. In was his debut song which got incredibly super-hit. He was a masterclass singer out of other newcomers then and now, he is almost a legend.
    3. The handsome actor from 2017's song is Sushant Singh Rajput. He was not a star kid, just a outsider who came and won hearts of millions of people through his first movie, Kai Po Che. This brilliant actor committed suicide out of derepression in 2020. It was reported that he didn’t get good projects just because he was a outsider, not a star kid from any bollywood family. Moreover, he had some relationship issues (alleged) which made him so much depressed.

6:40 I guess the transition from 40s to 50s is also because of the post colonial era and Indian Independence in 1947. As a free nation, the entertainment industry had a boost post independence and music and movies had a better outreach. One could notice a switch in the tone of the kind of movies or songs pre and post independence. 30s and 40s were all about the freedom struggle, so movies and songs weren't really 'celebratory' in nature, the youth/ people were busy fighting the British, movies and entertainment weren't really a priority. But this changed after Independence.
Might as well add, 70s and 80s were really dominated by upbeat disco music, which for some reason this video completely ignored

    • @horrorripples3332

that's a really good point. all the songs in 30s n 40s were about freedom fighting, anguish n struggles against the colonial rule. no wonder I could never like K.L.Sehgal'song from that era.. no offence..his voice is really nice and earthy but its really not my cup of tea..lol I told this to my mum n she is like even never liked Sehgal's songs..they were all about shedding tears.

This is the best bollywood singer of different era
    1. Lata Mangeshkar, mohd.rafi, Kishore Kumar, asha bhosle (younger sister of lata)
King and Queen of 50s to 80s
    2. Kumar Sanu, alka yagnik, udit narayan, kavita k, Anuradha Paudwal
King and Queen of 90s to early 2000s
    3. Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, sunidhi KK, shaan, Mohit Chauhan
    King and Queen of 2000
    4. Thank God we still have Arijit Singh and Shreya in this worst time
Thankfully they are still ruling in this worst phase of bollywood music
A big Thanks to t-series they completely ruined bollywood music after 2016
    When remakes and Neha came
Btw I don't consider Neha Kakkar and jubin good singer or hardworking talented singer
Because they're just puppets of T-Series
No wonder why they gets so many already hit(remakes) songs
And then they got millions of views
Underrated singers like :- monali Thakur, neeti Mohan, jonita Gandhi are much better than Neha
Little clarification for your brother who always praise jubin
I just want to tell you just because jubin nautiyal got so many songs in last few years that doesn't mean he is a current best singer or make him most lovable singer or people choice artist something

Javed Ali, Mohammad Irfan, Mohit Chauhan can beat him anyday
But he is currently most active because of that mafia of bollywood music aka T-Series.
His popularity and "currently most active singer" tag all credit goes to t-series
      Same case with Neha Kakkar
Some of his original song are good tho

ahh to answer your playback singer question, yes, the concept came about in the 40s. before that, the actors used to be singers too. imagine a scene where they're shooting below a tree, a mic would be hanging from the top. so singers had to sing really really loud for their voices to be heard. singers with high pitch were also not liked and encouraged like lata mangeshkar ji. instead you would hear a lot of shamshad begum in a female vocal as her voice was more popular and prevalent.

Firstly, let me thank you for your wonderful and honest reviews. Lots of fun, watching them ! Also, music is highly subjective, so what I write next is only my opinion. I love old movies/music. I'm the first to admit that I'm biased. Then again, all of us are.
To me, first there are Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Hemanta Mukhopadhyay ( or Hemant Kumar as he's known in Hindi ) and Elvis Presley. Then there is everyone else.
Also, from starting with 1952 till early 2000s ( Dola Re ), I like all the songs. A lot of them I absolutely love. Some - in fact more than some - are my favourite songs of all time in any language. Quality dropped from around mid-2000s. Still some good/great songs around. Kun Faya Kun, Tum Hi Ho for instance. But the density ( number of good songs in each year ) went down. Legends and geniuses like AR Rahman, Shreya Ghoshal, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Sonu Nigam are the highlights for me.
You should react to one or two songs from Aradhana (1969) and Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). 2 landmark movies in Bollywood. Aradhana launched Rajesh Khanna as the first Bollywood Superstar and Kishore became the leading male playback singer. Rafi was arguably more popular in the preceding 2 decades just as Kishore would be in the next 2 decades. With this movie and Padosan in the year before, RD Burman would become the leading Music Director for the next 2 decades.
QSQT or Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, launched Amir Khan's career and the next 15-20 years would be dominated by the 3 Khans (Shahrukh, Amir, Salman whose break-though movie was Maine Pyar Kya 1989) . QSQT also changed Bollywood music, newish Music Directors (Anand Milind) and Jatin-Lalit, Nadeem-Shravan and my personal favourite, AR Rahman, would dominate the next 10-15 years.

I'd say that Indian music directors have almost always kept with the western and global trends and instruments, and have incorporated them into their music, from the 50s at the very least.... And the music was based on the setting of the story, so if the story was based on a 'Disco Dancer' then the music was heavily influenced by Disco, if the movie was situated in a city then the music was different as opposed to something set in a village, etc. This is why you see such a wide variety of music coming from back to back years. And you're right that what Indian music directors and musicians do brilliantly is to keep that core of Indian classical/ folk music alive while adding in the more western/ middle eastern influences.

Thanks for your reaction. Yes, it's very interesting about the golden black and white era history for the emergence of Indian playback singing. From that time, according to our grandparents/parents the actors sang their own songs in the 30s-40s & the musicians played on the set too, they hid behind trees, other props. In 1935, the first playback song was apparently recorded. Shamshad Begum was one of the first popular playback Indian singers. Most actors could not sing, but great singing actors stars such as KL Saigal, Suraiya, and Noorjehan (she left for Pakistan after partition 1947) enjoyed immense popularity. Lata Mangeshkar came into prominence soon after the mid-40s. A request to dive into legends as Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle sister of Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt among others to see the variety of tones, styles and techniques, they were the great backbone & beginning of golden era Indian playback singing.
