WISDOM WEDNESDAY. Every week, you’ll get five powerful quotes from timeless thinkers (combined with some original insight): freedominthoug...
    ABOUT THE VIDEO
    _
In this video, I talk about Jesus, the Bible (The Gospels in the New Testament), The Book of Matthew, priorities, attention, regret, time, virtue, success, and building your best life.
In The Book of Matthew, Jesus said, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” So according to Jesus, the wise man builds his house on rock, while the fool builds his house on sand. And as you’ll see, to me, this is clearly a metaphor for the smartest way to build your life. What does it mean to build your life on rock instead of sand, and how do we do that? That’s what I’m gonna explore in this essay.
Let’s start at the beginning: what does it mean to build your life on rock instead of sand? Building your life on rock means that you’re building your life on a strong foundation, and if you build your life on a strong foundation, you won’t fall apart when hard times inevitably come. You’re able to survive and thrive in any tragedy. All the effort that you put into building your life won’t have been wasted, because your work stands the test of time. You’ll have this constant feeling of moving forward, and you won’t be regretful of how you spent your time. But building your life on sand means that you’re building your life on a shaky foundation, and if you build your life on a shaky foundation, you will fall apart when hard times inevitable comes. When tragedy strikes, you’ll find that much of the effort that you put into building your life has been a waste of time. You’ll feel frozen, or as if you’re moving backwards, and you’ll be regretful. You’ll say to yourself, “why did I waste my time on those things which don’t matter now?” or, ”why did I think those things were so important?” A lot of your time will have been spent in vain, and you’ll find yourself having to rebuild your life once more. So how do we get it right from the start? How do we build our life on rock instead of sand?
The life we build depends on how we spend our attention. Our attention is our most valuable resource, and it’s limited. So how do we decide how to spend it? How we spend our attention is determined by our priorities. And all priorities fall into one of two categories: time-dependent priorities and timeless priorities. So what does it mean, then, to build a house on rock? It means building a life where your highest priority is a timeless one.

This is so good. I had a interpretation about its teaching that was similar to yours, but you've explained it much better.
To me, solid foundation would be the spirit (the world of ideias, like Plato says; the metaphiscs), because that dimension time can't touch. The weak foundation would be the material things (money, looks, assets), because what is material, in a paradoxal way, is more volatil than what is not, therefore time take it way. What i hadn't noticed is: what time can't take way it can't obstruct to exist. That's empowering.
Your view helped a lot. Thank you from heart!

To learn and then to teach is also to love and to be radically honest. Easy stuff.
But you, salter of salt and lighter of candles, must also call out to the brethen: let us not ferment with hypocrisy, let us not ferment coveting power, fame, cash nor eternal youth. Just serve and chill, should be easy yet we cling.

@Gabrielle Parker can you point these verses out for me? I think i may have read a different translation than you, because I didn't see such.
However, i will tell you what I did see, i saw verses that advocated compassion toward others. I saw verses that encouraged humility (defined as viewing others as equal to yourself rather than below you, including slaves and women). Slavery and oppression of the gentler sex existed as a fact of life for most people throughout history, however thru the prompting of enlightened people who came into contact with a loving God, people began to question the oppressive institutions and saw a need to bring balance to the world by right action.
Let's take slavery for example, slave owners would treat their slaves like animals or worse and considered them to be scum and would force them to work Non-Stop with terrible living conditions. The Hebrew law implemented a day of rest for all including slaves and animals. It also implemented away for slaves to become free (considering that in most civilizations and cultures throughout history once a slave you were slave for life and even your children if you had any would be slaves).
But still I would like you to try to convince me of the veracity of your claim.
I'm not a close-minded bigot. I'm not going to beat you over the head with a Bible. I want an honest and open conversation with you.

Facts. But who or what is God?
I tried to define him (it, her, them) and could not do so definitively.
The best I could come up with is, Love, married to Wisdom.
And even then, how do I define Love? As the all encompassing force which pervades all things. How do I define Wisdom? As the negation of all that is false or corrupt.
In other words and as simply as i can say it, God is: all that is, minus all that is not.
In other words, God is the only real reality.

Don’t take things out of context from the Bible and put your own thoughts on them. Jesus was clear when He said that “whoever hears my words…” so in order to understand you have to read the Bible. I’m not saying that you’re wrong in what you said in the video but we always have to put God first and give our life to Him as He gave His life for our sake. When we put Jesus first in everything and surrender to Him and to the finished work that He did on the cross, that’s when out house is built on a rock foundation. Because Jesus is our rock

This is the Message of the Bible simply summarized in the two verses also found in Matthew 22:37-39.. Your video didn't mention the Infinitely Greatest Rock to Build your Life on 1st by pursuing His love & moved right to God's Second Command for Living on the Rock.. Though there are good points in this video, it didn’t get the most valuable truth given by Jesus. The analogy of rock vs sand was about following Jesus’s teaching (living our lives obeying God) vs our own way. I agree with the point about time base value vs timeless value, but learning is not the ultimate goal. As Jesus said, knowledge will vanish away, but love is greatest. As much as I appreciate the viewpoint in this video, I have to say the understanding of Jesus’s teaching of life foundation is misleading.

I don't know man, I think it's more complicated than this.
I thought about similar concepts, but personally called them Processes vs. Projects.
Processes(timeless) don't have a final, achievable goal, where Projects(time-dependent) obviously do.
Here's the problem I have with the explanation in the video:
Despite what is told there, I think timeless priorities can be bad and time-depended can be good. For example that guy who wanted lots of money also has a timeless priority: getting richer. Just as learning, you can do that all the time, it's your way of life. On the other hand, imagine that that rich guy after getting cancer decided to spend all the time and resources he has left on a time-dependent priority-creating some kind of a cancer-treatment foundation.
I'm trying to say that "sand" or "rock" priorities not necessarily defined by whether they are timeless or time-dependent. Actually, I believe you need to have both in your life.
Timeless priority can be Learning, but time-dependent can be Passing Exam or Writing a Book or anything. It's difficult to only have timeless, since it's more of a direction, it's vague. It's also bad to only have time-dependent or goals without understanding a bigger picture, since you'd be like a robot which goes from one checkpoint to another. But when you have both and when they make sense to you, then you know where and why you are going and that's what should eliminate any regrets when you the tragedy comes.

This is bad advice. Although you claim it isn't advice it really is, and you can see in the comments people are influenced by this. So that's why I must say, I used to think like this, but now I think it's foolish.
Isn't that convenient that Min's interest was in something useful? Most people are drawn to things like video games, gossip, fiction, or at best creative pursuits like art, sports, music, etc. In other words if you just follow learning what interests you, you will end up filled with useless knowledge and struggle to make money. You shouldn't assume all that money Tony has was useless on his death bed; money is a cushion for every kind of unfortunate event, period. And you also shouldn't assume both Min and Tony had money, whereas in reality you're more likely to have money if you make it your priority than if you just do what interests you and HOPE money comes as a side effect.

I have been struggling financially and mentally because I lost my job as a social worker because I declined the vaccine. I declined due to my pre existing health conditions heart disease and lupus. I’m on a ton of medications already warfarin and blood thinners. Living with lupus is challenging I’m in constant pain. I was denied my medical/religious exemption from Forsyth hospital. Since losing my job I’ve been struggling to provide for my two children. I’m so overwhelmed because both of my boys are autistic. So they require a lot out of me. My husband passed away three years ago so I’m all alone. I’m so down and depressed over my circumstances. I have been called horrible names and mocked because of my situation. I was even accused of lying by christians which really hurt my heart. Every month is a struggle and I’m in fear of being homeless. You didn’t say how he made his money, if he found fulfillment in charity, etc etc. Felt you just demonized material gain , which again, to each their own. Rather die rich and alone than surrounded by people who pity me and nothing material to pass on to my bloodline. Cancer is cancer, and who’s to say we all don’t take a few regrets to the grave or deny those regrets knowing we’ll die so it didn’t matter regardless. If Tony was proud of his advancement and content he wouldn't have felt so regrettful and maybe died a happy man.
Also, an even more timeless priority is devotion to God, which was not said and I'll deduce both lacked. Michaelangelo outlived all his friends and relatives but died a very proud and content man because of the work he accomplished.

His teachings ultimately are about love and truth. They are the eternals, the characteristics of God that will be a rock to build your life on. Knowledge (through learning) can come and go, but love's reverberations will echo through human existence.

Let's say a person is financially free at very early age, then he/she can chase their curiosity in multiple domains. They don't have to work for money. In today's age knowledge can be found easily on internet so finding a good quality source wouldn't be hard rather being in financial free at very early age is harder. I think a combination of time independent and time dependent master priority is better. Since it makes it easier to shift your master priority when your interest change. Further, time dependent priorities will often yield more real life power while time independet gives you more metaphysical power. A combination of both is important and one way to summarize this is as follows:
You should be able to re achieve your time independent priorites through your time independent priorities if that time dependent priorities were to be taken a way at a moments notice.
For example, people in buisness who have crawled their way to success always say that even if they had nothing they would be able to get back to their same position given a finite time limit.
My point is, both are powerful, both are important. Altough time independent is more profound, you will need both to be able to impact the world.

The best foundation is Jesus. We put our interest, goal or whatever in Jesus. Our priority is Jesus in our entire life. So that our life can be changed and we can get a new life in Jesus Christ
And for sure, our priority is not worldly things
Bcs when we die, it's not that important. The important thing is, where will we go? Hell or heaven?

I thought I was seeing things when I saw the title mixed with the channel name. Such a strong start, but it ended up as some cheap appropriation of the Christian message, rather than following through on the teachings of the Gospel. If you are being intellectually honest and consistent with the message of Jesus, the only truly secure foundation is God. Quoting the scripture in isolation and twisting its meaning to fit whatever you want is disingenuous at worst or half-assed at best.

Let me see. This means that a solid foundation for life would be to have as highest priority the process of achiving something rather than the act of achiving it? You could work for a 'perfect' life but you can always lose the things you care about the most. So, if your priority is to work for a better life despite your current status, you will always live according to that priority and you will endure the tragedys of life (and what you do will depend on what you think is 'a good life'). 'Learning' rather than 'knowledge', 'improving' rather than 'getting some result'. Is that so? Sames goes for 'avoiding pain' as highest priority, because pain is inevitabe in life.
I guess priority changes and can be complemented. In the example given I see that for her it wasn't just learning, she probably also had as priority things like caring and helping others.
Also someone could choose 'feeling pleasure' as highest prioriy because you can feel pleasure quicker than learning. Pleasure can be obtained fast but one can develop tolerance really quick too, needing always more to feel the same pleasure. So, I would add that we should put things that doesn't require time as highest priority but also that doesn't ware over time.
    Thanks for the videos

I don't understand how you can build your life on a "foundation of learning" (or the other timeless priorities).
I definitely understand the sand vs rock example but it's not clear to me why learning or gratitude is "rock". It's clear that time dependent priorities are "sand" though because they are not permanent. I think I'm having trouble with the concept of a "foundation" which is a solid material thing, being used to describe a non-solid, non-material thing (like "Learning").
I think becoming aware of your priorities and where you are focusing your attention, that's big (for me). The rest seems a little to ethereal for me to grab on to. But by noticing the reason your attention is focused on something, that's revealing.

While I think you are correct in deciphering the concept of the passage, you didn't discover the point of it that I believe Jesus was getting to. God and Jesus who is God's son and therefore also God is referred to many times throughout the bible as the rock or foundation of the ages. God is the rock that we should build our foundation on. If you put God first then everything else will be added to you. Knowledge, character, love, faithfulness. Its because by having a relationship with Jesus his divine character and nature is imparted to us and our divine nature is restored gradually. Learning by itself will only get you so far but Gods love and faith can move mountains.
