      Way back in the 70's my pipe teacher gave Sean Potts a lovely Ralph Sweet wooden whistle when the Chieftains came touring through Chicago. Potts liked it, but he stuck with his old nickel plated Generation . ;-)

    Sometimes, what amazes me most about Irish music is how the heck people manage to remember these amazing pieces by heart!

    • @derrik-bosse
      @derrik-bosse 3 года назад +49

      Not saying it's easy, but the songs are generally short forms, 2 or 3 parts, and they repeat. The ornaments are form of variation, and when repeating the entire form multiple times, it sounds like a lot. But these songs were meant to be learned by ear on 1 or 2 listens, so they are made to be simple. Great musicians take it to another level with their ornaments

    • @TonOfHam
      @TonOfHam 2 года назад +9

      @@derrik-bosse You are talking abstractly, this specific arrangement you are hearing is not a 1 or 2 listen for any musicians I know.

    • @reathm
      @reathm 2 года назад +9

      Songs, legends, plays, stories etc were not written for thousands of years, and were transferred from generation to generation by memory. What is amazing, is how much "we" (modern, "classically trained" musicians) have lost the ability to memorize pieces, a skill that would have been considered trivial a couple of hundred years ago.

    • @annep.1905
      @annep.1905 2 года назад +13

      @@TonOfHam Actually, this tune is a good deal more simple than it sounds. The ornaments make it more difficult, but if you slowed it down and learned one part at a time (they're usually 2 themes - an 'A' theme and a 'B' theme), You could probably learn the basic tune after hearing it once or twice. Getting it up to speed and adding all the ornaments is a different question, though.

      When I picked up the whistle at first I thought this too but it turns out it's not actually very hard. It's not so much that you're "remembering" like consciously thinking of the notes or anything. Not sure how else to explain it but after you play it through a few times its kind of like your fingers just know where to go. Like walking or something. You don't have to remember how to do it, your body just knows

    I just had a C one ordered from e-bay a day ago as well. I have a backround in playing a recorder and clarenet and have COMPLETELY forgoten it all. So, in a sense I have no backround as well. Never learned piano, but I play. I just sat down, pressed a key, heard a familier note, and walked my fingers across the musical land of black and white, and made my life more colorful. All you need to learn to play anything is a good ear, passion, determination and patience. Familier sounds will guide you.

    Absolutely glorious, and performed on a cheap mass produced straight bore whistle at that. Today you can buy fine whistles for the price of a slightly used auto, which to me is an offense against the entire concept of the whistle. I published a way to build one and also an uilleann pipe cheap using telescoped brass tubes to simulate the taper bores of original tin whistles/pipe that preserves their tone and octave intonation. Well she's a great player, I'm so glad you let us see her playing.
