There are times that sensory input can be overwhelming for autistics. Abigail has sensory processing disorder and when some of her senses are overloaded it can affect how the other senses process the world around her. She was able to calm herself with a little help.

I think that it's great that you took Abbie to the game. She did struggle a bit in the beginning (like i would) and then she calmed down and got used to the noise. I think that it really showed how well you know Abbie and her needs. You are willing to challenge her, but if it's too much you'all leave. 10/10 parenting

I am an adult with a lifelong diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Watching abbie on the bleachers totally reminded me of myself! When I go to concerts or stadium events, my anxiety is high and I really struggle with walking through the rows! I've never seen someone else have that same type of reaction. It's like I feel like I'm going to fall or trip and I just can't seem to get my brain to communicate to by body correctly. I would say your theory about the overstimulation is spot on.

Abbie looked scared to death in the beginning, but she seems to have calmed down. I know it's hard, but I think it is so good that you expose her to new things and to the real world. That is very important. I know this is an older video, but I am so proud of her! Every time she does something new then she wins. It was a loss for Autism and anytime Autism does not win it's a great thing!

I love your relationship as a family with Summer. She seems like a great girl. One of our son's elementary school teachers is similar in personality to Summer, and she is the BEST person for our son. He just loves her. She doesn't let him get away with much, but he doesn't feel pressured because she is so laid back.

Definitely understand the loss of depth perception when overwhelmed by sensory stimulation. I lose my depth perception, feel things happening where they arent, and sometimes can't keep my balance at all.

I also have Autism and I love going to Disney world. I love Disney because they have disability passes for us with special needs so we don't have to wait in the lines for the rides. I get overwhelmed by a lot of people that I don't know. But I don't have any trouble with going to Disney. All of the characters were so nice and very patient with me. I don't have a Service dog yet but I am planning on getting one when I get my own place to live. Thank you for sharing your life with me it means a lot to me. I am 21 years old. Thank you again

ive learned so much from binge watching your channel. we found out our daughter was on the spectrum 6 months ago, and we've learned more from you guys than her doctors. seriously, you've helped me understand why she's doing some of the things she does. the amount of information out there is overwhelming when you're taking in all at once on your own, but your videos have been much easier to learn from and actually comprehend without confusion on whether its connected to her autism or not.

FatheringAutism, I sort of bit have the same problem with Abbie there for loud crazy noises too. Like at our conference biggest rival game, it was not a very easy situation to handle, due to their screams and their rowdy environment, and the same thing happened for our non conference biggest rival as well. I also hate it when someone pops the balloon, and it is just so loud. If u don't know, I rarely wear Mack's Ultra soft foam earplugs to block out the rowdy environment instead of noise cancellation headphones.

Summer IS such an awesome young woman!!! I imagine Summer is playing college volleyball?-what is the college she plays for!?!? Just curious!! I think you have/she has mentioned she is doing psychology, with the aim eventually of being an ABA therapist. She is such a beautiful person!!! It’s also awesome that you continue expose Abbie to experiences such as this-you never know until you give it a go, right?!-as you said, you would have removed her if it was too much-but experiences such as this, makes Abbie’s world ever increasing-because Abbie, & you guys know you can do it united together! Being on the spectrum/different/disabled can be so isolating (I know form experience!!)-I’m sure, if Abbie could say it, she would be SO appreciative and grateful of what u guys do you with her-along side her, to make her world so much wider+bigger!!! I’m 100% sure Abbie’s life is so much richer for your outlook-and willingness to give anything a go!!

Thanks for answering my question, Asa. We had similarly good experiences with WDW as well. They are top notch. We have gone there 3 times with our sons and they are VERY accommodating. I'd also recommend that if you stay on site consider the cabins at Timberline Campgrounds. We stayed there twice with our entire family. It was very quiet, comfortable and surprisingly accessible for us.

Hi, it’s only me - again. Firstly, I know how difficult i5 can be to go places with Abbie as I have an Em. I applaud you for not allowing those difficulties from becoming a life limiting factor for the family and that you touched it out. I also have to plan it out in advance e regarding what to take with me when I take my daughter places, and consider contingency strategies... “every chance for a new opportunity...” great quote Pricilla.
Also agree with Asa’s findings that when one sensory issue arises it can cause a cascade effect on others. I also understand and agree with the theory of heightened anxiety can trigger and exasperate sensory processing issues.
Thank you for sharing the cases and it’s something I will look into. My daughter has destroyed iPads and iPhones in the past. We did find “cooky” cases though and they’re quite good too.
Great feedback regarding theme parks, my daughter loves them too. A season pass could be a good idea, our nearest has a zoo.
Schedule oriented - I like that phrase and it describes my daughter well (thank you for that one). She can not move through the day unless she completes each element of the “schedule” first....so frustrating.
How dioes Abby cope with strip lighting? Personally I hate them, gives my a headache, loose focus, and feel sick..... and that’s just me ha ha.
    Summer is unique and awesome.
You keep posting and I’ll keep watching
Warmest regards from North Yorkshire, uk.

Thanks for the case info. We carry lots of devices for our son too. I used to do 4g on my devices but since he uses all the apple devices we carry a hotspot with us so they could be used together and it doesn't cost a fortune. My son is verbal but has a lot of sensory issues. He doesn't use headphones but I need to get him to start. I think it would help a lot. Your daughter is beautiful and she did great at the volleyball. My husband and I are the same way as you guys. We always have a plan. If the sensory overload happens he is around a good group. It's nice to see other families with similar situations. I look forward to your videos.

OMG, ASA! I have social anxiety disorder AND agoraphobia. During the peak of the illness, getting me to leave the house or apartment were I was living would be a disaster. It was too the point that my (ex)husband and I would only do grocery shopping at like 2:00 AM at Walmart, so I wouldn't encounter crowds and have a meltdown... which has happened... many times. I have a lot of anxiety disorders that require medication and therapy. And gradual exposure (aka systematic desensitization) is a therapeutic approach to dealing with my fears. It's also called the Hierarchy of Fears. Baby steps. My example: City buses scare the CRAP out of me. I witnessed a gang fight in one. Since then, YIKES. So my past therapist (before I moved several hundred miles away and had to change therapists) established my hierarchy. Hearing the word bus. Thinking about buses. Thinking of situations that may occur on the bus and how to handle them. Seeing pictures of a bus. Standing at a bus stop. Looking at an actual bus. Boarding the bus accompanied by someone I trust, then getting off the bus as soon as I started to panic. One step at a time until I'm comfortable enough to move on to the next step. So far, since I had to switch therapists, I regressed a bit. I can go as far as seeing a bus in person, but that's it. No getting on. Nope. Nope. Nope. Maybe someday. I know autism technically isn't an anxiety disorder, but it does create a lot of anxiety, which can be helped with similar approaches. I'll send you some info from one of my textbooks. Cuz that is almost EXACTLY how you're handling Abbie's sensory issues, which I find REALLY REALLY AWESOME!!! If you wanna talk about it with me sometime, you have me on your FB Messenger. :) LATER, MAASS FAMILY! THUMBS UP!!

I just realized that maybe one of the reasons I don't like sports and don't understand why people are competitive (I hardly every feel competitive) is because it's basically rooting for the other people to fail. I like things where everyone is on the same team going for a common goal, but once you split people up you've totally lost me on what makes it fun (I don't really participate in group activities but I like to watch them). Am I wrong? I have Asperger's so maybe I'm missing the point? I thought this would be a good place to ask...

She did great at the game though. She really did. I wonder though, why is it that she can handle loud music and her own yelling but, she doesn't really care to much for the yelling at the game? (I've noticed this with quite a few ppl with autism. It's only certain loud noises that they can handle but, everything else that's loud, they don't really do well with.) It's interesting.

I'm an autistic person. Depth perception is one of our senses and like any other of them can be affected by autism. I do have difficulty all the time with depth perception and even more badly when I get overstimulated by noise or light. I definitely believe your assessment of what happened to Abbie is OK. When I get in a meltdown, or even before that when in overstimulation, I sometimes loose (totally or partially) sight, hearing, balance, depth perception or feel like I'm falling helplessly into an infinite well. Any combination of these can happen, which can be really frightening, frustrating or plain dangerous (for example if you're an autistic adult usually able to pretty well mask it's autism and "function" and are walking alone on the sidewalk of a busy street and become overstimulated!).

Would noise canceling headphones help? Not even ones that necessarily play music, but just greatly minimize all the new sounds t

she wont leave them on unless theyhave music and even then wont necessarily leave them on

That kind of relates to me but it’s the opposite. I’m OK at the beginning but if it gets too much I get overwhelmed. It just depends on how bad the noises.

My daughter won't wear the ear phones. When we are out and she sees babies she panics and puts her fingers in her ears. What can I do to help her get over the fear of babies?

Abbie did so GrEaT!!💓 I'm glad yal test her limits, I agree it desensitizes the overload the more you expose her. I know a few parents that play the "avoid everything" game... it's unfair to the child in my opinion.

I wonder, have you ever thought of getting her noise cancelling headphones? I heard they help with sensory overload. Just asking.

    • @fatheringautism
      @fatheringautism  7 лет назад +17

+Yadiel Nieves She won’t keep them on her head. She keeps her Bluetooth headphones on because they are playing music. They keep out a lot of sound though so it works similarly.

FatheringAutism but aren't there noise cancelling head phones that play music as well? I'm sorry I maybe am misunderstanding this. But very interested! I have always wondered the same. noise cancelling headphones must surely also serve the same purpose as music playing headphones, no?! Thanks in advance :)

+FatheringAutism So could she listen to music when she got overwhelmed by the environment, or is music not helpful in that situation?

Don’t know if it’s just me or it happens to everyone, or it’s just that my noise cancelling phones are the cheap ones, the noise cancelling hurts. Like it hurts your ears and make your head seem to be at the brim of explosion.

To be honest, I’m split-minded. But the most important at first I really appreciate that you take Abbie out - into real life, not put her in a w to the split mind. First I thought “are they crazy to get into a loud and crowded gim?,”shell and leave her alone most time. Now to the split feelings. My first thought was: “are they crazy to go into a crowded, loud and heated gym?!” BUT I saw you were prepared. You helped her do ground herself, she was able to listen to music - that’s the other split.
I don’t know where my sensation comes from, I should probably test it in different situations... But I’m very anxious when I’m outside. I can’t cope with crowded places, I feel like an alien etc. I have two situations in mind where I got troubled with my senses. When I’m in town and have to go downstairs it seems as if the stairs have their own “life”. I can’t figure where the next step comes all though they’re equal. The same phenomenon I’ve in cinemas. It might have something to do with overstimulation. I’m not sure. Maybe you exchange experiences with other parents? I’d be really interested if this is a dissociation-thing or somehow autism-related or both. But it has something to do with anxiety or inner “high voltage”.
Once again - it’s great that you take Abbie to the outside and let her participate in society, even if she might struggle.
