A fair assessment. I qualify in the 'wanting to have the best image quality for my archive collection' category and upgraded on that basis. You can always sell your old Blu-rays to recoup some of the cost. As you say, purchase is down to personal choice and your video gives great insight for those who are unsure.
It's such an difficult area with Who. We all want everything that comes out, but you have to weigh up the pros and cons. I think those getting it for the right reasons will be really happy with the set, but I do worry some will expect more from it.
I remember about 10 years ago I made a pretend list of Doctor Who DVD content/features for each series, I added stuff like the animated specials, Attack of the Graske, TARDISodes, the correct versions of episode mixes etc. I really need to find it and send it to someone at the BBC.....
Hiya, been on the fence about picking up this release for a while. But haven't been able to find a video that answers all the questions I wanted answered, And this video does answer those questions! Also great editing and video quality, cheers, Thank you!
Thank you ever so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. The name was going to be Beyond The Screens originally and then Behind The Screens, but they were already being used by someone else. Having used it for a bit, I think Beyond The Sofa is better :)
I personally am just hoping that once the Collection set is complete from a classic era perspective, they're given permission to start work on expanding beyond classic and begin making new content for the modern era. The hour long interviews, behind the sofas, documentaries on location, reuniting actors in discussions, etc.
@@BeyondTheSofa Thanks. The main one is....are the Confidential extras just the previously seen cut down versions or the original broadcast versions? Thanks.
I've gone back and forwards with this just to check but yes, the image certainly is better than iPlayer. Partly this will be because of the limited data rate when streaming. It's important to consider, though, that not all TVs are created equal, so not everyone is going to see a marked improvement, but it is better.
Is there a list anywhere of issues specific to this release? Thinking of purchasing it to upgrade from my Steelbooks, but want to see all the errors present here first!
I believe there are some lines missing in The New Doctor as well. That’s only come out recently… of course, you miss stuff when there’s this much content.
I love this box set so far! From what i''ve watched so far the first episode of series 1 does not look HD to me. It looks slightly better. On th specials disc The end of time part 1 looks amazing! Looks like HD to me. Also it has a DTS 5.1 HD Master Audio track on all episodes and to my ears it sounds fantastic!
Really glad you’re enjoying the box. It is a good set and it’s only really people who had it before who could be worried about buying it. The new upscales look fantastic!
I’m really disappointed that we didn’t get this in the states! I already have the rest of the series on Blu-ray so there’s no point in me buying the entire massive collections that just to get series 1-4. I guess I’m still gonna have to save up by the boat and do it though, so I can get a hold of these. Thank you for the honest review!
I’m in kind of the opposite position. I would have loved to have the big box set over here (even though I own most of it on one format or the other) but we don’t seem to be getting it.
I’m more interested in if the special effects have been improved? I was also wondering if in the future AI could replicate missing episodes. Like what they did with Peter Cushing in Rouge One. Recreate with actors and sets and build it from there.
Thanks for your comment! Regarding the special effects in the Doctor Who Series 1-4 Blu-ray set, the visual quality has certainly been enhanced with HD remastering, but the special effects themselves remain true to the original broadcast. The charm of those early episodes partly lies in their practical effects, which have been preserved to maintain the authenticity of the series. Regarding AI. In time, I'm sure it will happen. I think the jump in quality and ease of production for 3D could play a bigger factor in short-term production, however. Some of the stuff coming out of Unreal and Metahuman is really groundbreaking.
I’d be interested to hear what you’ve seen upscaled that you thought was better. I’ve had quite a bit of experience with upscales now, but I haven’t seen everything. It would be interesting to take a look at other examples.
What’s the bonus disk from the steel book

They would do well to have a list like that 😂
7:35 I would say though, those releases had the infamous speed issue. Everything was that touch slower.
Yes, you’re absolutely right. I know that wasn’t an issue for some. I think it would have driven me round the bend.

Thank you ever so much, that's very kind of you to say. I’m so glad the video was helpful for you 😊
Lovely review! Also I love the name. Beyond The Sofa! That's a genius name for a Doctor Who related channel.

that would be great. It comes to something when we get less on a release for something modern than we do for a story that's 50+ years old.
A good break down. I haven’t upgraded to it yet as I have the steelbooks and the DT USA blue ray collection.
I can understand that. Had I got the steel books I don’t think I’d be upgrading.
Thanks for the great review, certainly answered some questions but left me with others. Thanks again.
Feel free to ask anything, if I can get you the answers, I will :)
@@BeyondTheSofa Thanks. The main one is....are the Confidential extras just the previously seen cut down versions or the original broadcast versions? Thanks.
@@johnfitzpatrick9994 They are the cut down versions. even more than that, actually, they had to cut a few clips for compliance as well.
@@BeyondTheSofa Oh dear that's not good news. Thanks for your prompt response 👍
@@johnfitzpatrick9994 My pleasure.

I can't find anywhere there is a comprehensive list.
@BeyondTheSofa Thank you for checking 🙂
New issue that I’ve noticed so far, audio echoing issue in the episode “the next doctor”

@@BeyondTheSofa Yeah the fact that both versions aren’t available everywhere is very frustrating and doesn’t make any sense at all!
I suspect that in time there will be a release for each the other Doctors in matching packaging.

The upscale is disappointing but the rest is Great
Thanks for the review will not be buying, I think we need extended cuts to most episodes to make me re-purchase the show.
I can quite understand why you've made your decision. It really isn't a must-have purchase, is it?
I do think we're overdue releases of the two parter episodes as one story
I've seen better upscales
I’d be interested to hear what you’ve seen upscaled that you thought was better. I’ve had quite a bit of experience with upscales now, but I haven’t seen everything. It would be interesting to take a look at other examples.
