Tiny little mall but oh so beautiful. The planters, the benches, the tiles, and even the lighting! I love it sooo much!!
The best things come in small packages!
There's something about those brown floor tiles that's so comfy.
They are from a very different time.
@@UniCommProductions Sure are! But thanks for documenting these places. With the relaxing music, you definitely take us on a vintage mall cruise!
"Bite-size" mall. Does that mean it's low-cal and will save me money?
It looks nice enough to enter but it would be good to have a proper drop ceiling installed to cover up all those unattractive roof trusses and heating ducts. That would also help to insulate the place and control the noise. The floor looks really good. I don't see any leaks or decay.
I love your work Kristin these videos are entertaining and informative I cant get enough of them thanks for your time and efforts. I would also like to say I love your editing and production values top notch in my humble opinion. Watching these videos I can't help but be astounded at how similar malls in the US are to those here in Australia. The fate of these malls are also similar. Thanks again. Cheers.
Wow thank you Michael! I put a lot of work into these videos and comments like these make it so worth it.
of c o u r s e there's a Maurices.
100%! They are an unsung dead mall survivor.
I’m convinced that Maurices is the only clothing company that would survive a nuclear war.
Love how the lighting makes it feel warm and inviting.
The interior is amazing!! Love your channel and narration!
As a fan of your channel, this one kind of blew my mind: this is my local mall! If you ever want to do a deeper dive on it (or any other southern Ohio/retail spaces), I can share some memories of the different places it's hosted over the past thirty years, such as the old arcade, candy store, and even a long-forgotten restaurant. That shuttered corner space near the Dunham's, for a more recent example, was originally a Dairy Queen, before being converted to Kiser's BBQ in 2009, owned and operated by a local family. It was one of the best places to eat in Athens, before shutting down during the pandemic. Last I heard, after close to two years out of business, they're looking to reopen elsewhere in town. It was one of the most active remaining businesses in the mall before closing.
This is so much more information than I was able to glean from newspapers--by the late 80s a mall opening wasn't really "news" unless it was a huge spectacle of a place so this one didn't really receive the coverage it would have if it would have opened in, say, 1978. Thank you very much for sharing, this was all new information to me!
@@UniCommProductions I can understand that; being a college town, I imagine a lot more local events compete for news coverage and without something really grand about it, a mall opening (and developments to said mall through the years) would fly under the radar.
I never knew the history of the mall's construction and ownership you mentioned in the video, so that was really interesting! I've grown up with the mall, though, and I remember many of the changes in retail space and what a lot of the businesses used to include, how they were arranged, bursts of activity the past few years since the mall's been in decline, etc. and even of a local business owner I know who considered expanding into the mall and ultimately didn't, and why. It's a quirky little space. Athens has a contrast between "uptown" and "downtown" and often businesses successful in one don't work out when they expand into the other (that happened to Kiser's too).
If you ever do revisit it and want a deep dive with a local's knowledge, drop me an email at mike@mikereidwrites [dot] com! I'd be happy to help. I actually found your channel a few months ago while searching for retail exploration/history for the OH-WV-KY tristate area, specifically the Charleston Town Center Mall which was sort of the "destination mall" of my childhood, and got hooked on your videos. Cheers!
2:36 I love what's on the right, along with the functional playground, it gives the feeling there's a good amount of young visitors; unlike many malls who's visitors are aging out.
3:29 Was that a message that ballerina wear given to you came from that location?
6:50 That anchor entrance is wonderful with the reflected string lights.
Thanks for sharing.
All that beige and brown gives it a 1980's aesthetic. It seems rather dark - but I rather like it! My guess is the management is trying hard to attracting customers, and the photos on display adds interest to the visiting experience.
Imagine how dark the mall was before they strung all those cafe lights across the ceiling!
2:40 OMG - never since Bashford Manor Mall (press F to pay respects) until literally just now have I seen a little seating area in the middle of the hall where you could watch TV. Neat!
Fantastic. The trees inside are very mature.
This one is cool, gonna have to try and stop by the next time I'm in town visiting Jackie O's!
This is a great little mall. It definitely has a retro vibe to it. I've walked through here, and one of their former tenants was a place called Retro World specializing in older console video games and systems. They had a great selection of Atari 2600 games one of the best I've been to. However, that's a different story for a different time. I have seen this place on several visits to Athens, and have seen all the transformation. It's still a little mall that could, and does.
On a side note, if you go on up State Street past Walmart, there used to be a second enclosed mall call simply Athens Mall. It included an Ames, a Rite Aid, and I believe, a furniture store. Like this one, it wasn't that big, but it was enclosed. They gutted it in the early 2000's when Ames closed, and turned it into the strip center that exists today.
Great video, as always. Thumbs up
2024 update the elder beerman is now a vender mall called peddlers junction. The part of the mall where the play area, Maurice’s, and all of those empty spaces is is now being constructed as an Ollie’s bargain outlet which ended up closing part of the mall.
Thank you for the update!
Neat looking mall. Thanks for filming.
Awesome video like always! Good job!
I really love your videos, they are gggrrreeat
Warm, cute, soothing and relaxing, this is such a great little mall.
That style of floor immediately reminded me of the old Salem Mall.
YES! Exactly !!
You finally came back with another video, #epic
Aw thank you, Kade! Hopefully this next one will be out more quickly.
Great video u have a great voice
How am I late to a cruise? No notification this time for some reason. Welcome back I've missed you!
It was very early this morning-and I don’t think the notification went out which is frustrating
Hey, no mention of the King Midget Museum inside. A very oddball car that was produced in Athens.
In the 1990's, this Mall was home to weirdest Kinkos! (Now Fedex Office). The production facility was on the second floor and the store was on the first floor with an outside entrance. There was no internal connection between them and they would hand carry jobs upstairs. This was particularly odd since the second floor closed overnight while the store was open 24 hours.
That is well worth a return trip to see!
@@UniCommProductions You have already been tot he King Midget Museum at 3:53 (among other times). Not much of a car, not much of a museum but worth a look. The Fedex Office is still in the same location. I haven't been in it in 25 years but I bet it is still the same.
These mails are depressing. Too institutional looking. Never noticed when I was younger. They seem claustrophobic also. Free standing stores are the future I think.
Alright, I've gotta ask: What was with the Hello Kitty character?
I generally try to avoid appearing in my videos and I felt a little too visible!
I caught it, and then called it ;) Then I wondered how many previous times I missed it....
But I applaud your tactic 100%! I've been trying blurring as subtly as possible, but now I'm wondering... XD
I love the lighting!
It really softens that bare ceiling doesn’t it?
@@UniCommProductions it really does! It’s unique and sets that mall apart from other malls. Not the traditional mall lighting
This is kinda cool! Awesome video Kristen! (I spelled your name right, correct?)😸
I spell it with an I but what are a few vowels between friends? 😀 Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!
@@UniCommProductions of course! So to make sure I’m correct, it’d be Kristin?
@@ryanfrisby7389 Yes, that's correct! :)
i'm the hundredth like
Woo-hoo!!!
I really like this mall.
Very attractive interior love the lighting
It feels like you’re in a detective movie.
🆒 VIDEO KRISTIN!!!!
THANK YOU SNAKE!!!!
@@UniCommProductions WELCOME KRISTEN!!!!!
Cool as always, nice work obligatory first. Lol.
Thank you! and congratulations on being first!
@@UniCommProductions LOL. I always laugh at the first thing. That's why I had to say it.
I really like how they kept the 70s tile and incorporated modern designs its an interesting aesthetic.. Here on the west coast the older malls just erase all of its 70 s and 80 s heritage.
You don't see the floors very often these days but when you do it's in a small town.
I really liked your comments/perspective on the let’s go 2 your mall interview (and this vid). You and your content f*cking rock.
Awwww thank you (and thanks for watching the podcast!)
