    There is just no way such a beautiful, sad, noble theme song could ever be intended for a villain character. This stirring, mournful melody is reserved for heroes. Listening to this song just strengthens my resolve to redeem Solas.

    • @Lonely_Moth
      @Lonely_Moth 3 года назад +11

      Well, he IS a kind of hero. He's been all alone against an insane destructive force (other "gods") for how long? Centuries? And now he is all alone yet again, weakened and crushed, against the whole world, trying to fix the consequences of that ancient war. He desperately tries to do the right thing, which is a hero's trait, but he does it in a dumbest way possible 🤷🏼‍♀️ because one just shouldn't do such things "all alone, weakened and crushed". I'm not sure he will ever risk trying any better though

      @@Lonely_Moth He... he wants to undo the world, killing millions in the process. How the fuck is he 'kind' of a hero. He's an ancient elf psycho.

    • @Lonely_Moth
      @Lonely_Moth 3 года назад +4

      @@perseusveil9376 um... undoing *the world* is not what he wants, since it would be kinda impossible for his people to live in a world that doesn't exist.
      He is trying to undo the current *state* of the world. It's cut from the Fade, and Solas wants to restore that connection. To bring the state of existence he, well, undid by accident, when created the Veil.
      That "destruction of the world" they were talking about at the end of the Trespasser dlc comes from
      a) the fact that the world without the Veil works very differently from what mortals (a.k.a everyone except ancient elves) know. Most of current population is just unprepared for that kind of existence (like ancient elves weren't prepared to exist without the Fade);
      and b) other Evanurises are still there, and they won't be merciful, when the Veil doesn't stop them anymore. These guys can actually undo the world (they almost did in the past). But people would have to deal with them sooner or later anyway, and Solas... er, "has a plan" or something.
      The problem with Solas is not about what he wants - he wants a very healthy thing, really.
      It's that Solas is a hasty, hotheaded, panicking dumbass, who's too busy with self-loathing instead of thorough calculation of his plans and the consequences. Bruh.

    • @perseusveil9376
      @perseusveil9376 3 года назад +8

      @@Lonely_Moth I'm sorry, he doesn't want to undo the world. He just wants to undo the current state of the world. That is, you know, the world as we know it in the three games we played. So, yes, he wants to undo the world.
      He wants to do this because he prioritizes elves (well, his elves), just like Corypheus prioritized tevinterans (well, his tevinterans). He is nostalgic of a bygone world, just like Corypheus was nostalgic of a bygone era. He will kill millions to complete this "plan", just like Corypheus tried to do to complete his. Solas is a hero in the same way Corypheus was, and at the moment I don't see how he doesn't deserve just the same treatment.

    • @Lonely_Moth
      @Lonely_Moth 3 года назад +3

      @@perseusveil9376 well, with that second list I wouldn't argue even for money, because the irony is golden. Not to mention how they both hecked up the whole world, and how Corypheus wanted to be a god while Solas was already known as one, just to make the comparison complete 👌
      The difference is in details, though. Corypheus messed up trying to save his people from a loss of faith into the Old Gods (which was a great disaster in his mind, but wasn't an threat to anyone's life).
      Solas messed up trying to save his people from an actual slaughter, committed by his own kind.
      Corypheus wanted to bring back *his nation's power* , because he thought the world should belong to Tevinter.
      Solas wants to bring back the source of his nation's power, because that's how the world literally *should be* - the Fade isn't elf-exclusive thing, all peoples were robbed of it. Unlike a loss of faith, which is all in all a natural change, the very existence of the Veil is wrong and harmful, it twisted everything and everyone. The whole cultures were formed around an unnatural growth that shouldn't be. For Solas it's even easier to consider mortal races sick and unnatural in the same way, just a product of that wrongness. Imho, a coward's position, but still has nothing to do with Corypheus' "my people are coolest so they should rule".
      Finally, unlike Corypheus, Solas is perfectly aware that he messed up back there. He knows he messed up again. And he realises that he messes up yet again, but is too "foolish and arrogant", as he calls himself, to just stop.
      The question isn't about what any of them deserve, not about crime and punishment.
      It's about how to make things better. We wouldn't have to kill Corypheus, if he hadn't been beyond any reasoning. It just happened so that he was bringing harm and there was no other way to stop him from doing that.
      Solas, on the other hand, isn't as crazy or as deeply self-deceived as Corypheus. There is still a hope to shake him to some senses. Also, we *need* Solas to finally remove that blasted Veil, eventually, since no one else (that we know of) possesses such power. We *may* have to kill him, if there's no other way to prevent an unnecessary tragedy, but why would we do that otherwise?
      If there's any chance to convince him to stop running around like his tail is on fire 🙄 and take some time to prepare the world (those people who would be willing to learn the ways of the Fade, at least), find safer sources of power, properly think through our actions against the Evanurises - why not combine the efforts? It's clear that he won't be able to perform something like that on his own either.

    this track it's so tragic and sad, and yet it makes you feel like, somehow, "the villain", it's sad too... i mean, what would you do if you woke up in a world occupied by weird aliens, and humans were enslaved, and the beauty that once reigned in the world was replaced by stupid wars and injustice?
    although, of course, solas would commit genocide, i can still relate his feelings, his sadness and the melancholy that this character shows...

      Solas is the reason his People fell. Or at the very last, a very large contributing factor. He brought down the Veil. He knew this would happen, so it's more than just him waking up to the ruin. That's why he feels that he has to 'fix' his mistake.

    If my ears do not deceive, this mix has faint vocals accompanying the strings, and the low-end percussion isn't as prominent. I don't think the vocals are present in the soundtrack version, but they could just be obscured by the other instruments in that mix.

    No one can blame Solas, in the end, he just wants what's best for his people, and if you aren't a dick to him he does admit he'll allow the survivors to join his elven society as equals. yeah a lot of people will die, but no matter what there would have to be sacrifice.

      @@kixmix2450 He SAVED his people the best he could from the Evanuris. Wouldn't you want to have your society and culture back after sleeping a while and realizing that everything you knew and loved was just gone and there were stupid groups of aliens who are constantly in war? I'm definitely on Solas side. Especially because Cole is on his side, the spirit of compassion, the one who despises bad and evil people, but he only sees sadness in Solas - nothing villain-like

      It's not even only about his people, I guess. The Veil merely bugged the whole world, it's a thing that shouldn't be there. Honestly, for someone who claims to be no god, Solas toys with the basic structure of the existence pretty easily 😐
      I want a compilation video "Solas claims he's not a god and says/does an absolutely goddish thing the next moment for some minutes straight".
      It's not an accusation. I actually respect him for this readiness to do what should be done for a greater good, no matter how "impossible" it is. Ends up being a disaster combined with his desperate recklessness though 🙄
      He really needs some people to offer different perspectives on such matters and to stop him from desperate, poorly planed actions. Well, friends. The very thing that terrifies him somewhat less than dying in loneliness. Aaah, DA4 is gonna break our hearts multiple times, I can see it from this far...

      I feel like there's a pattern here where the odd-numbered Dragon Age games have "muahaha, I'm evil!" main villains while the even-numbered games have more nuanced situations that we have to navigate through.
      "Origins" and "Inquisition" have the always-evil darkspawn and "a god, am I!" Corypheus. It seems like Trespasser sets up "Dreadwolf" to have more of a sympathetic villain in Solas, while Dragon Age 2 arguably has no main villain and it's just messy politics and religion (Meredith is "the final boss" but Kirkwall was such a crapsack city in the first place something's bound to happen eventually).
