  • Koe no Katachi's (聲の形) (The Shape of the Voice) recent anime movie is pretty interesting. In this video, I analyze some of the ways it falls short of its source material, and a couple ways it may have improved in its adaptation.

    Hello there, people! For those who didn't know, part two of this video is up, and you can find it linked at the end of this video. I also wanted to apologize briefly: I think many people have felt manipulated by my original title. That was never my intent, although intent doesn't matter all that much I suppose. So anyway, I've changed the title to something a little less provocative and eye-catching, but a bit more honest. It's a slight change, but some of you saw the title and read it as being a bit rude to the movie and its creators, I think, which is something I never want to be: the people who made this movie are fantastic at what they do and pour themselves into their work.
    Anyway, I hope that the new title seems better. Thank you for the feedback. I'm always taking it into consideration.

      To be honest, I was avoiding this video because I thought it was just going to be bashing the movie and talking about all of the ways it failed. I still think that the title is a bit misleading, as I think this was more of a critical analysis between the differences in the movie and the manga. I really enjoyed your discussion. As someone who both watched and read the series, I noticed that the manga was a bit "darker/deeper" than the movie, but overall I enjoyed them both separately. Closer to the end of the manga series, you could tell that there was some filler-ish stuff going on so I'm glad they took that out--however it kind of takes away from the character development of the other classmates. I look forward to the second part of this! (if there is one).

    I really hated that blonde haired girl, who always pretended to be nice, but used her faked innocence as a girl to trick everyone...
    In the movie she even pretended that nothing ever happened between Nishimiya and her and she was all like "you're popular right now so because now I'm so pretty we're friends now!" That blonde girl is so fake and I just loved it when Shoya shouted his mind towards her and that friend of him too
    Of course that blonde girl would say something like "You're so cruel/mean/whatev" and then starts crying always playing to be the victim of the case GAH!

    To be honest I dislike the teacher. He too, KNOWS very well that Ishida is bullying Nishimiya but nothing to stop it from getting any worse. You're telling me eight of her hearing aids are lost/broken, and the teacher did not see any suggestive behavior? Man he is as bad as the bullies. Shouting Ishida's name at the top of his voice doesn't immediately make him a good person. He also did not try to help Ishida when he was going through bullying, which is another horrible mistake. Sure he deserved it, but bullying is still bullying. It is wrong no matter who do it, what situation.
    Sadly, this character is quite realistic. Just many other teachers in real life, they fail to do the duties of being a teacher, other than teaching the students. As a teacher, you need to teach them emotionally too, guide the students who are at the wrong path. A teacher is not just a teaching robot for students, a teacher is also a parent, a guardian, a friend, a counsellor for the students.

  • @JGFurgie

    As someone with Social Anxiety, I felt the film's representation of it was at least very strong. I haven't read the manga yet, so I can't comment on that, but it definitely hit some major notes, and I'll likely begin citing this film when I explain it. The biggest thing was hearing what Shoya "heard" his classmates saying. It was super subtle the first go-around, but I noticed it much more clearly when I got to thinking about it later. It's perfect because that's how it is. You don't hear them talking about school or home, you hear them talking about you, and even when they aren't, you still hear it. It's part of the reason large crowds can become so daunting, because suddenly you imagine that all those people have heard about your worse mistakes and are talking about you and laughing at you.
    It may fall short to the manga, but I think the film was a great story of redemption and growth, beautifully done to convey the idea that you can move on.

      I absolutely agree with you about the social anxiety, and how the movie tackles it in a very powerful. one. I also really noticed how amazingly the show handles that idea on my second time watching it, which is what made me make my second video where I praise the movie.

  • @KayleLang
    @KayleLang 5 лет назад +153

    The character that frustrated me the most was the teacher. It reminded me so much about why many teachers fail at addressing bullying and how some unwittingly actually contribute to it.
    I remember a girl in my class in 5th grade. This girl was really assertive, uncooperative, and if things didn't go her way, she would use cry bully tactics. She was grouped up with me many times and I dreaded it. She really didn't know how to work with others and was completely unaware of how she was hurting them. The thing was, she treated everybody in the class poorly so everybody turned on her. She started to actually get bullied herself. I admit that I've said things that I regret even though it was backlash from how she treated me. I was the type of kid who would even help my bullies if they are in need but I never extended that help to her. She was far from being my worst bully and it's one of my biggest regrets that I didn't help her out.
    With the whole class against her, she had it really rough. If I had the mind as I do now, I would have tried to be her friend. That's all she really needed and it may of help her social skills to the point where people were no longer hostile to her.
    Looking back at it, the only people I am angry with are the teachers, principals, and guidance counsellors. They didn't help, and if anything, they made things worse. When kids have a problem with other kids, teachers shouldn't be saying something equivalent to "get over it." I had teachers who literally said, "don't be a tattletale." Many times, the problem is bigger than the teachers realise, but they cut the students off way too quick. They just let problems get worse and worse.
    As for the girl in my 5th-grade class, when the teachers and principal finally stepped in, they came in way too late. It got to the point where the bathroom wasn't even a safe place for this girl. I think it was closer to the end of the school year before they really got involved. They also confronted in the worst way possible. They had the entire class in a circle and asked us why we were treating this girl the way we were. They were talking to us in a threating voice so how the hell are 5th graders going to talk honestly about what's been happening? Most of us, like me, were scared into silence. Afterwards, the entire class had to stand in a line on the schoolyard during recess. What teacher in the world thought that this was going to stop the bullying? All it did was made us resent the girl even more.
    With how bad the bullying was, the principal should have talked to students one on one to figure out what's happening. The punishment should not have been humiliation but group building.
    The teacher in A Silent Voice epitomizes all those problems I had with teachers and how they deal with bullies.

    • @spacesomeone
      @spacesomeone Год назад +2

      I agree with you, the teacher was so frustrating, like they're the adults here, they're the one who should be responsible and able to actually so something about it, yet they deal with things in such a detached manner, just wanting to get things over as easy as possible, and only when the parents start getting involved do they start caring, it's so infuriating. terrible what happened to the girl, I hope she had recovered somewhat by now, also, kudos to you btw for extending a helping hand even to your bullies, I don't think me or a lot of people are capable of doing that. also totally agree about talking to each student instead of threatening whole class. btw, idk if you've seen it, but march comes in like a lion's anime also depicts bullying so freaking accurately and emotionally, had me literally feeling choked every scene it happened, but that aside it's one of the most wholesome and empathetic shows so, I hope this doesn't actually steer you away lol.

    I think Shoya's suicide attempt at the beginning was handled perfectly, cause it got me into the movie within those few minutes with the question of "why?" And the next few minutes I was like but he was such a jolly jerk and when the reason got to me it hit me harder than the manga, I agree with everything you said other than this one. And I think the manga and movie can't be compared, like compressing 62 chapters into 2 hours isn't possible. Just because it was kyoani we got a masterpiece, others wouldn't have rolled out movies where expressions talk.

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  7 лет назад +105

      Hm...yeah, I can definitely see how the way they structured his potential suicide would result in that reaction. You obviously can't add everything from a manga to an anime. Honestly, if the story had started from a new girl in school and the bullying, I would have stopped watching and put it down.
      The beginning was jarring, and grabbed my attention enough that I was willing to watch through to the end. The movie treated his situation very well, and with everything that happened, still gave plenty enough reason for suicide. Some don't even have a clear reason, because mental illness isn't clear.
      Keep in mind this was an already very long movie. It is already 2 hours. As a stand-alone movie, I'd say it was perfect.

      Exactly. A lot fo the complaints weren't true at all. Like the boredom thing; it was obvious in the movie that he was bored and wanted to impress his friends. We see it in his body language and how much more happy he seemed after bullying Shouko. It's mostly all in there, just with a "show, don't tell" approach. And I'm glad they did it that way. If they tried to explain to the audience that he was trying to avoid boredom or something, it would have greatly taken away the impact.

      You , know, I wonder if this is one of those instances where seeing the movie before reading the manga is the better way to go. I've long held this belief with regular movies/novels. So much is usually left out in translation that the movies feel emptier, I've encouraged my children to watch movies based on novels before reading the novels as a result. That way, the manga expands on the movie, filling it out, and making it a richer experience, rather than the other way around.

      It is a culture thing. In many eastern cultures the teacher believes that letting students solve their own problems promotes responsibility. Another thing is that while they may not actually step in and stop everything, often times they tell the parents and expect them to do whatever it is to 'fix' everything. There's actually a saying that I know 一家不知一家事 which roughly translates to mean that you don't know what other people's problem is so don't butt in.

      Honestly, I think the teacher is just an asshole. Some people would care without making their job as a reason as to why they stepped in but the guy was - whether movie or manga - never cared to intervene and was just there in the end to blame Shoya like everyone else did because he was the "problem child." Easy to blame it on that one person other than thinking you could've done something yourself too.

    It doesn't sound like a bad adaptation from what you've described so far. Seems like the changes have just been about abbreviating content and making Ishida a more relatable and sympathetic character. The manga character you've described is actively cruel to distract from his own problems, whereas the film character doesn't realize he's being cruel because he's swept up by the crowd. The former is a stereotypical bully and, frankly, not a character I'd root for. The latter is a fairly normal kid which also helps emphasize his regret when he sees how his behavior hurt others. Maybe the manga makes him sympathetic eventually but the film has a lot less time to do so which makes this shortcut a good adaptation decision.

But since this video's been successful overall, I'm honestly a bit nervous to change the title. Although, I tried to make the title of my second Koe no Katachi video a lot less misleading.
      That's really awesome that this is your favourite movie and, despite all my criticisms, I can totally understand why--I mean, I also made an entire video about how the movie succeeds, and why it's so fantastic.
      Anyway, thanks for watching :)

      Manga was great too, although I think that drawing out the ending a bit in the manga lost a bit of the power that the anime possesses. They're both great and I thought as an adaptation into a movie it was very well done and didn't chop too much out (aside from the movie directing part which it still made due without tbh).

    I agree with you completely, but unfortunately you drive away majority of the audience that enjoyed the movie, meaning they will not watch your video with the title, but immediately hate comment, downvote, or just not watch it.
    I think the movie supplements the manga well. There are obvious flaws in the manga due to it being a running series, editorial/fan feedback decisions, and lengthening of the story. The movie helped condense it by highlighting important parts, which you can only do in post-production.
    Imo, neither of the mediums stand alone, but they both supplement each other to form a masterpiece. The movie's symbolism and imagery is only noticeable when you truly understand the characters and backstory.

      I definitely appreciate what you're saying about driving a lot of the people away with the title of my video; in hindsight, I probably should have titled it differently, but I titled it this way because the second video I'm working on is called "How A Silent Voice's Film Adaptation Succeeds", and I thought that created a nice contrast. Of course, there was no way for potential viewers to know that, so many of them did downvote and not watch the video.
      They do supplement each other very well, and the movie succeeded the manga in a number of ways that I'm going to get into in the next video. Thanks for your comment, and for watching the video :) I really appreciate it

    I disagree. I think the interpretive nature of the movie helps the narrative. Just because he isn't going to kill himself by the time we see his isolation doesn't mean the audience can't understand that this is how he has seen his life since middle school. I thought it was pretty clear, but I like it when movies and shows don't assume the audience needs everything spelled out to them.

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  7 лет назад +9

      I agree with you that most of the audience could probably piece that together--the idea that he has felt this way since middle school--but I still think the structuring really changes the viewer's frame of mind as they watch the rest of the movie. Hope that makes some sense. I definitely prefer the way they did it here over if they had decided to spell everything out to the audience. Honestly, I gained a much larger appreciation for this movie later on, and I grew to love many of its subtleties that were, frankly, lost on me the first time I watched the movie. You might enjoy my second video on A Silent Voice more, where I go into just how great the movie is.

    I think something the movie did well was to change Shoya's tone as a teenager. In the manga, Shoya's Xs come from him resenting other people; he's still angry. In the movie, he's more recognizably fearful, and I really think that loss of power registers better along lines of empathy. I wish that the movie would have implemented more backstory about Nishimiya's father from the manga. It's a very understated driver of Shoko's guilt and explains the Nishimiya family psychology, such as why Kyoko is such a horrible mother, why granny is the best granny, etc. The movie could have smudged it in a five second flashback, honestly. Between manga and movie, I love both, but prefer the movie for its amazing ability to, ironically enough, masterfully implement sound in a thematically relevant way. I also like that the movie more subtly handled plot events. The manga goes full 100 in many scenes ("must climax every chapter to retain readers" issue). So many unnecessary slaps and punches and yelling. For example, Mashiba's quiet line after the bridge argument in the movie actually hit me heavier than the manga white-knight punch.

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  7 лет назад +15

      Yeah, that backstory element being missing really did change things. Personally, I liked the white-knight punch because it lined up with the rest of Mashiba's character, in the way that he only really knew how to deal with situations through something physical (like dumping water on the teacher). In the movie, however, it definitely made more sense to take it out.

    Speaking to perhaps what the adapters may intended, I think they intended it for an audience who disregards and even bullies people with disabilities. In Japan disabled people are treated like second citizens it's very normal to bully people who cannot carry their own weight or need handicaps.
    It's also very taboo to show mental illness (suicidal thoughts) .I think what the adapters intended to do was to show how it was an individualized case (a fight against boredom) but rather how the cruelty of bullying and how easy it is to victimize someone.
    Of course I totally understand your point and think it's an important perspective, I just think the perspective they went for was how the position victim and bully and the journey of forgiveness and guilt was also very nuance and groundbreaking for Japanese media. This is coming from an Asian with disabities, so to me, I think this movie is a great step forward with faults, but still important.

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  7 лет назад +13

      Yeah, this film is indeed very powerful, and what you mentioned with the mental illness/physical disability dynamic creates a really interesting link between Shoko and Shouya throughout much of the film. Fascinating video. Personally, I feel that the film is superior due to its visual direction to convey narrative, and the condensed story- the cut content wasn't to my liking. However, the film's auditory presentation makes it superior- Saori Hayami's performance as Shouko, and the sound design convey the tragedy that is portrayed in a way that can only be done with cinema. I do think some cut scenes should have stayed in, but perhaps only 5 more minutes would have fleshed out what was missing.
    It may fail as an adaptation, but it is trying to tell its own story. I highly recommend reading Naoko Yamada's interviews, as they help give an idea what she was going for.

    I was fan of the manga way before the movie was even announced. Still - I like the movie much better. I think I prefer this subtleness you mentioned over detailed characterizations. I feel that in some cases it's better when characters serve a sole purpose of delivering certain "ideas" to the audience, rather than being full-fleshed human beings. This way they're more, uhh, "flexible" - I mean, it's easier for audience to relate to them when they're a little bit more vague. I still remember this sting of consience when I realised how much I'm similar to Kawai Miki - if I was put in the same situation as her, would I also act as such blatantly ignorant, blind and selfish person? Manga kind of ruined her for me when it tried to explain her character - I could no longer see myself in her, since her motivations were too, umm, detailed or personal for me to understand or relate to them.
    A little bit of vagueness forces you to think more about what you see, it leaves "blank spaces" you can fill with your own experiences.
    An another minor reason of why I also liked the movie better - I'm really happy they scrapped the movie-making arc - it was bland and unnecessary and I still wonder what was the purpose for it (the scene with meeting the teacher after all these years was cool, though).

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  7 лет назад +21

      That's a really interesting idea about the blankness of a character allowing for more points of relation between the reader and the character. I'd honestly never thought of it that way when it comes to storytelling, as I've generally leaned towards the idea that more is better (only to a certain degree of course), but your argument is really compelling. Thanks for sharing! I really appreciate it :)

      Adir Biniashvili Adir Biniashvili i have to respectfully disagree with you on that, because i didn't even know that this movie had an manga until a few minutes vefore i watched this video, because i was posting about the things that made this movie feel hollow and artificial to me, and someone recommended the manga to me.
      And i agree with him. There felt like there was a huge chunk of information missing to me, so to me, when shouya decides to kill himself, even though i can see that it's been planned for at least 2 weeks, it feels like it came out of nowhere. They don't show anything that could pissibly reinforce his thought process, or why he has such a thought process, so it feels almost like, he decided to kill himself because 5 years ago he did something bad and got in trouble, and 5 years later he either is still angry about it or suddenly feels bad after 5 years and goes "guess I'll die then".
      Coming from the perspective of someone with GAD, Shouya's anxiety build up and shut down were pretty accurately protrayed, and i also have a deaf friend whom I've known since i was in 6th grade, coincidentally, and it did make me think about how i treated him when i was a kid, and how he probably felt as well, considering that unlike Shouko, he couldn't really communicate very well in any other way than sign language and my sign skills were pretty basic at the time, so i found it very hard to communicate with him and many times, i just felt uncomfortable, around him because i didn't quite understand him, and he didn't quite underatand me when i tried to sign or write to Him.
      Anyways, it has some accurate depictions for sure, but to me over all the movie felt very hollow. Despite the beautiful art and animation and framing, and having subject matter that i can relate to, it still felt very hollow.
      I did cry a few times, but at the end of the movie, it still felt like there was just something essential that was missing from all of the characters, and the story, and i think that Lowart described what was missing perfectly...at least in my opinion.

      @zoneteiko2995 Год назад

      I disagree, i read the manga first then the watched the movie. the manga had more depth and thats why it was more emotional, we actually understood why everything happened, why shoya was so eager to make up with shoko to the point where he would go suicidal. Depending on which order you observed the story in (Read the manga first or Watched the Anime first) your thoughts on each versions would be altered. I believe that manga readers who then saw the film would be confused as to how compact everything was and how half of the entire plot was left out, they would feel less emotions because the side characters werent justified, even shoya's childhood wasnt justified. The manga focused on the hardships of a friendgroup and how everyone in that friendgroup was just diffferent to begin with. I believe that to people who saw the film first then read the manga, would be confused as to how much deep the story actually goes, infact they might even get bored reading the first volume as it focused only on Shoya's childhood with shoko and the gang. I believe the light hearted tone of the film would create a sense of deep confusion as to why the manga would go so far into drama and create all types of misery to all characters. Its the same franchise yet it feels so different. The film was fine on its own, and the manga was fine on its own. But knowing that the original story goes much more, it will ruin a lot of things for the same franchise.

      Lowart Sorry but I must disagree here. I personally think that the movie did its best as a visual medium by conveying certain feelings, ideas or story parts in symbolistic shots. I rewatched the movie four times and I have not yet found a single shot which didn't have anything to say. By doing this Naoko Yamada (the director of this movie) reinforces the emotional impact the story has to tell. Even the most trivial but ephemereal moments have a certain impact on the viewer. I would seriously recommend you to watch Under the Scope's video of Koe no Katachi. I think he did a great job analyzing the movie on an artistic level. Please don't see this as advertising since I really think that this video will open peoples' mind about this movie. Thank you for taking your time.

      Upon rewatching the movie, I'm inclined to agree with you and say that I may have been watching the movie with too critical of an eye, in the sense that I wasn't necessarily that willing to get wrapped up in its atmosphere--because the shots that I called "artsy" really do have a purpose in creating an emotional impact, as you said. Of course, I can still see why people would find those things to be distracting, but I have definitely changed my mind about that. I've also seen Under the Scope's video; it's very well done and definitely helped me appreciate the movie when I went back and watched it again. I have the new video coming out tomorrow, which I think you'll appreciate based on your comment.

      I both agree and disagree with Frogo's comment, the movie is indeed compressed, I think it would've been MUCH better if it had been a series where they took a season or two to go through the WHOLE Manga BUT at the same time, they still did an amazing job getting very essential parts of the story in and conveying the emotional and human side of the characters, you can get into the story and when someone's upset or crying from happiness, you can truly connect, it makes you feel as they feel.
      It's a movie that had to compress the story yes, but it did what it needed to do and did it well.
      Am I disappointed that they squished the story into 2 hours?
      Well, yes, but at the same time they didn't butcher it and made one of the greatest movies I've ever watched.

    I would understand your point of "fail" here. I was reading the manga after watching the movie couple times and i feel like there's a lot of things missing and couldn't explained in the movie. The childhood, the characters nature and background, the biggest part is the drama project for the school festival. But i couldn't say it's a fail since the almost all point of this movie is about Ishida, until he open his minds to everyone it was really satisfying in the end. Btw nice video, looking forward for the second part!

    I think the movie supplements the manga well. There are obvious flaws in the manga due to it being a running series, editorial/fan feedback decisions, and lengthening of the story. The movie helped condense it by highlighting important parts, which you can only do in post-production.

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  7 лет назад +1

      The use of sound is this movie is truly spectacular, and one of the biggest reasons I can understand people liking it even more than the manga.

    Wonderful video man, I'm glad I learned some more about the manga. To me I felt the manga and movie are two versions of a similar story. While I enjoyed the manga for it being more detailed and explorative I have to say, I loved the movie much more. That subtle nature just leaves me with more to love, it's like the lack of something that says more in its absence than it being there. Shoya is someone who for me just feels better in the anime than in the manga.

    It doesn't fail. The direction is amazing sure the manga is great but I still prefer the movie because of how good the direction was I've watched it 5 times now and I've paid great attention to every part. Like when Nishimiya jumps off the bridge and Shoya fails to catch her which foreshadows the balcony scene later on and where Shoya is the one that falls into the river but Nishimiya doesn't which could be considered as Nishimiya having forgiven Shoya but Shoya not having forgiven himself. The movie projects these emotions and its better as when you read something you don't really feel the same amount of when you are watching something. The background music of every single part of the movie is amazing. I cried the first and second time watching it but I didn't cry when reading the manga its just different. Although all your arguments are correct but that doesn't mean it 'failed' the title is a bit incorrect although I get it as its more catchy ;)

    I know that this movie may not live up to the manga, but its still my absolute favorite movie ever. I really can't stand seeing the word failed beside such a masterpiece. I watched this movie while home alone one day without knowing it was an adaptation at all. And hours after the credits rolled my heart was still pounding from the emotional rollercoaster "did I ever hurt someone that bad" I thought for a while. And finally you have to admit perfectly adapting such a god-tier manga is nearly impossible.

    I have read the manga a couple years back when it was still serializing in Weekly Shonen Magazine. Seeing the anime movie now, I kinda had a feeling there was going to be changes but some aren't bad in fact were pretty good but I still feel like there could have been more or something similar. I think for me at least, it could have been done more as a anime TV series (maybe 24 episodes) than film, that way could have adapted more but at the end of the day what you going to do? however I enjoyed it even if it was condensed a bit much.

    Having only seen the movie, I didn't think the other children in the movie appeared innocent, including the teacher. It was obvious to me they all engaged in or encouraged harassing that girl up to the point where she transferred schools. I see people criticizing the movie for leaving so much out, but I think the side characters are actually well developed for the short amount of screen time they have, mostly through subtext. I loved how subtle the themes of this movie were not everything has to be so explicit and heavy handed for the audience to catch it.

  • @f.m848

    Honestly, the movie did the school part much better than the manga, the fact that Shoya was only the active bully made us actually pay attention to how destructive passive bullying can be. it felt more natural when they turned on him and I immediately thought they led him to do these things! especially how he was just looking at how people got fed up with her and then started his bullying! bullying her cuz he's bored? seriously how do you think that's better?
    not to mention in real life most kids in these situations don't joint the bullying, they just watch or laugh(some of them entertained but not enough to join, and some of them are just happy it's not them being bullied) so having the whole(or most of) class bully her is actually pretty unrealistic and is just trying to manipulate the reader to feel bad for her even more.
    pretty much everything you said the manga did better than the movie or the movie didn't do well, they actually handled way better in the movie. it just had a lot to do with exposition. the manga has a lot of exposition and pretty much hand feeds us everything we need to know to feel the way the author wants us to feel! while the movie gives us hints of it and still gets the same feel out of us, except in the movie version it's much more satisfying because you figure those things out instead of getting chunks of information fed to you! it's like you didn't even see all the flashbacks in the movie!

    I felt like the movie wanted us to see him as he saw himself. I know a ton of people felt like he absolutely deserved the hate he got at school, and some of my friends were happy at first when they saw how much the bullying broke him, since they saw it as karma. I think there is a big emotional impact to the audience forgiving him for being awful, and while it may not be true to the manga I think it evokes the same message at the heart of everything

    I'm quite sure they would definitely be a couple the more time passes, but the movie clearly has a shorter time span than the manga, and they both are still working on things by the end of the movie, so it'd make sense for them to realize that they should build up their relationship

    I have a question that has been bugging me, why did the director exclude Shoya's sister. I have rummaged through the internet, every nook and cranny and yet I'm still not satisfied. The best explanation I found was that she isn't relevant to the plot and that excluding her would deepen the viewers relationship with the main characters. But even with this explanation i still have questions. Why even bother including this character in the first place? She is obviously heavily suggested in both the manga and the movie yet we still can't see her face. Her husband who didn't even live with them had more scenes.
    pls pls pls
    if you know why
    pls tell me I'm dying
    (also I'm kinda mad they excluded the bathing scene with Yuzuru. that scene was golden, don't get me wrong i bawled my eyes out and loved the movie but like this video explains, there are still some parts that the manga does better on, if you haven't already then pls read the manga, there are so many parts that have been missed out on like the bath scene)

  • @AirsDesertSpirit
    @AirsDesertSpirit 5 лет назад +5

    I don't believe it failed at all. Subtle hints for me have always been a key for my taste in film/animation. I understand story telling is completely about piecing together every underlying detail, especially when it comes to manga and almost any type of media platform that is mostly filled with youths as an audience.
    However the plot if this *is* to create a mindset for the watchers to use their brains, and come to certain conclusions on their own.
    I would much rather see your title of this video be something less click-bait, and more along the lines of "A comparison of manga adaptation of A Silent Voice, and how it could have been better."
    Because in no way, did the studio fail to bring this project to life from the pages.
    I've never read the manga series, I came across the movie without knowing what I was getting into.
    I haven't related to an anime as much I have to this movie besides Clannad. And that was ages ago.
    To see this movie with unbiased eyes, I have to say all the points you made, saying that it wasn't captured the same, I have to disagree with you. Strongly.
    I felt, every bit of emotion with the sounds, editing and artwork. All of it. Each scene brought different perspectives for me, I couldn't hate any character due to how well they placed the scenes.
    I might be overly emotional at points, due to my life experiences, and how quickly I felt like I've walked in all the characters shoes...yet I can't begin to argue that your points are lost on me.
    This film was done masterfully. Visually, audibly and emotionally.
    I'm the type of mind that watches every detail, every gesture, and listens to ever noise.
    Investing my time into watching this was one of the best and most healing things I've done in a while. So I might be a little defensive about A Silent Voice's adaptation, and I apologize if this comes off in that way.
    I haven't watched your part two, but I am gladly going to right now.

    Hi, 3 years later haha. As someone who hasn't read the manga and only ever watched the movie, I'll tell you I think they handled it pretty well because it can be a bit dense, there's so much drama and emotions in two hours that it can be a little bit too much for some people, I don't even want to think what would had happened had they adapted it straight from the book you know.
    I loved the movie even as dense as it is, I got to connect with the characters, I understood their motives, and I liked that even though shoko suffered horribly, as she grows up she stops being the victim and goes on to be a character important to the main character's growth. And honestly the ending is just great because as it is a film it has to have a storyline and you got to see which one you're gonna choose, in this case it was shouya's ability to stop being a victim (im not saying it in a bad sense), you know that part when the crosses fall and he is able to see the world crearly just hits.
    Basically what you wanted could be possible in the case of a series, not a movie.
