Testing some M35 COBALT drill bits from Banggood... Excellent, High quality product...!!!

  • In this video, I'll be testing some M35 Cobalt drill bits I ordered from Banggood an Asian Trade company in the same fashion as Amazon or Aliexpress. I'm testing the drill bits to their limits against more popular and cheaper drills. The prices for those drill bits is really good and the overall quality of the product is surprisingly good no regard to the price.
    I will test the Banggood drills against some popular products available in Canada ( Canadian Tire ) and in the USA ( Harbor Freight ), to my surprise the Banggood M35 Cobalt drill bits will perform very good in increasingly harder test materials up to at least 47 Rockwell on the C scale.
    Those drill bits would make an excellent everyday set that will drill into just about everything and last a long time. Just make a note that their 135 degrees grind make them perform better in harder materials, if you need to cut mostly in softer alloys or aluminum you could regrind the tips at 118 deg.
    My opinion of those drill bits is that it will perform very nicely with everyday operations in hard alloys steels and can easily be reground if needed.

    Excellent video. I have been using these HSS-E drills for years, initially because they came with a split point but I found them very long lasting and well worth the premium. They do still chip from time to time, but stay sharper longer in glass reinforced materials and less wear on the diameter also. Came in handy recently when I had to put a pin hole though a socket extension, no way with the HSS but the HSS-E made it through fine with a couple re-grinds. That extension was way harder near the forged end than in the center, where I had tested drilling it.
    The Chinese sets make a good refill for drill indexes, I bought a bunch at Aliexpress at their anniversary with the discount. Sometimes they try to pass off inferior drills as M35, with partial TIN coating and a silver shaft.
    I generally avoid "titanium nitride" coated drills like the plague. I know there are high end ones out there that work, but gold colour can not make up for the poor material they use in cheap ones.
    The worst drills I ever had was ones that came with a cheap cordless drill set. They unwound and wound back up the other way like a left hand drill the moment it touched the workpiece! You could tell something was not right with them, they looked much too bright, a bit like aluminum colour, and were very light weight by comparison (but magnetic so some iron in them maybe).

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 лет назад

      Those are actually surprisingly good, they keep their grind still usable even after being pressed againgt something too hard for them... ;)
      The Harbor Freight are really the cheapest stuff just one step above what you mentionned about the twisting drills, poor grind, very average material and irregular grind, at about $15USD a set what can you expect, on the other side the Canadian Tire set is in the good everage and usable set, this is what I use lots of times on softer material, I normally regrind them at 118 to allow better entry in softer material.
      Thanks for your comment, Pierre

    • @stefantrethan
      @stefantrethan 7 лет назад +1

      The 118 degree might also help reinforce the outer edges against chipping. I seems like they always chip a good way back so I have to grind away several millimeters. The softer HSS just kinda rounds over and is easier to touch up. Not sure if the M35 material is more brittle or it is just the angle making a weak corner.
      At work it is not really worth my time to grind them so I get plenty dull ones to practice my drill grinding at home.

      Banggood is a neat place to shop, there is a little bit of everything, you still need to test the quality of the products in order to end up with products that are well worth the price, if us consumers only demand the better goods, then, the sellers will be forced to improve the quality of their orrefings... ;)

    Thanks for the useful test my good man! Too many tests are tilted from the "tester" being employed by or given product from the manufacturer being tested! This test looked like one I may have done myself! and I will be purchasing products as the results of your test make sense to me! Have fun man! G>

      Depending of the product, some are given to me, some other product I'll pay for. One important thing that counts for me, if the product is something I'd use, I'm ok making a review and evaluate, there is always the price/quality ratio to be considered, this is something that has to be mentioned. I don't bother order or ask for a product that doesn't look promising, I got no time to lose making videos about lame products just to say it's a bad product, those videos are quite time consuming... (It may take me from 2 to 4 full days to make one single video...)

      Those are actually great drill bits, I havent used them in Stainless but they also do great there, one word of caution about using them in aluminum, the 135deg. grind isn't the best for soft metals, though, you can use cheaper bits for softer stuff anyway...

    hello pierre interesting video. I was wondering can these banggood cobalts drill through a piece of HSS stock ? I do not understand "rockwell" terminologies too well. sorry if my question was silly

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад

      You're not going to make a hole in HSS with just about anything, HSS steel is around 65 RC, this is as hard if not harder than the drill bits. Also HSS with Cobalt will stay hardened even if heated hot enough to braze it... Very difficult to anneal...
      Rockwell is a way to measure hardness, it uses an indenter to poke a divit in the material to test, the result is obtained by measuring the size of the divit... Bigger indent = softer material, smaller indent = harder material.
      The scales, like A, B, C, are for different hardness, A for softer materials, B for medium soft ( Cold rolled or so ), and, C scale for harder materials ( graded hardware, tools room set up blocks, rails on a hardened bed on a lathe, etc )
      If you do a search on my channel you'll see a video where I demonstrate how a conventionnal Rockwell tester works.
      Thnaks for viewing and for comment, Pierre

      @@pierresgarage2687 thanks for clarification concerning Rockwell. I just want to modify an HSS tool. that's why I asked. and No, not in the sense of sharpening it with a grinding wheel but to drill a hole in it where I can tap it and hold it with a screw/bolt.
      The tool I'm trying to build here is an "adjustable length hole saw" by bolting 2 HSS stock (cutters) to a "T" joint so that they don't slip when I run it in the chuck on the drill press.

    Interesting video. 55 HRC is indeed extremely hard. I've tried a few sets of M35 and M42 drills from China. They cut OK and have reasonable durability for the price. My issue is they aren't terribly straight.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for taking a moment to share your experiences on the subject.
      All depends what type of work is being done, if you require a finished hole with very close tolerances right from the drill bit, then, you will need to be much more fussy about the initial qality and pay quite more money to get high quality tooling. On the other end, if you need general purpose bits to do general fabrication and mostly require endurance, those less precise bits will do great. The price is an important criteria for people that don't dispose of an infinite budget for tooling that only needs to perform general or no precision tasks, those can even be used for a pre-driling op that needs to be finished by a second process.
      This is where an experienced machiniste will be able to diferenciate between the proper tooling a job requires.
      All this to say that 95% or so of the people using drill bits will get by with a good and durable even though it's not as precise as costly tooling... For them it would be a waste of money to get $$$$ tooling that sits on a shelf most of the time or is used to drill into rusted old recycled pieces of scrap metal...
      ATB, Pierre

    A little bit of comparing apples and pears here but not too much. I would always expect the cobalt to outlast or outperform the HSS, even if they are TiN coated to keep stuff from welding to them which they won't anyway with proper lube. Often the coating is added just to attract customers.
    The last set I got from Horror Fright half of them had a reverse grind as if they were left hand drills. They didn't really work too good even as left handers what with the negative rake and all. Once they went through the drill grinder and received a 3 angle grind they turned out to be really good drills. A 3 angle grind is a regular grind with a split point or web thin and a 90° cut at the corner to strengthen the corner and provide a near reamer like finish. Holes are not as round as a reamer and chips can sometimes be a problem in stringy material or with insufficient lube. Unfortunately few grinders can do them.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 лет назад

      Agree with you that the HF set has a less than acceptable grind on most of the drills in the set, this is kinda of unacceptable as most people will use the drills right out of the box, and, most people can't shapen anyhthing properly...
      Here the Canadian Tire set is not the top quality brand but it does lots of my regular drilling work in many materials including Stainless steel. With the proper grig they're acceptable.... ;)
      A good HSS drill bit with a proper grind will perform adequatly in most of the work that people will undergo, the cobalt drill bits are a step higher in oder to make holes in special or much harder materials, also, their performance will outlast other type of steel alloys drill bits....
      The higher price tag is worth when you use them more than average people and when you work in harder alloys.
      Thanks for your input, Pierre

    I drill rc 46/48 1075 spring steel 1/4" thick (flat) with #29 (.136") 135 degree split point standard cobalt drill bits. When I get the job, I drill around 100 holes. Each spring gets 2 holes, and I use a new drill on each spring. I use slow speed and anything similar to wd40 brushed on, maintaining wet puddle. Works great. The drill bits do drill more than 2 holes, eventually making that chattering noise, then will break off. But, 2 holes works for me in this case, no issues.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 лет назад

      The hardness is one of the factor of influence, the aloy materials also determine the wear on a tool, add ons like tTungsten is a tough one on the tooling...
      I'll have to see about using WD-40, so far soluble coolant is also a great lubricant/coolant combination, and stinks less than WD-40, I tend to use some regular cutting oil in order not to make the lathe or milling having to deal with either rust or gunky coolant slag...

    No lube oil and no respect for the HF dill bit on the first circular saw blade! HF drill bits have never failed me, but then I don't normally push them through hardened materials, I used my better bits for that. - Great Demo. Shows that the cobalt doped bits are somewhat better.

      Hummm...!!! I haven't watched again the video, but, I'm quite sure there was a drop of cuttin oil on the blabes... Cobalt bits are one step above plain HSS bits, if you don't work tough allows HSS is quite enough, the HF bits are doing a good job for a quite low price as well as our Canadian Tire for us Canadians, those CT bits are my all to go bits for softer materials.
      Bottom line, to get some good use in tought materials, Cobalt HSS bits are a must, though... ;)

    Hey thanks for the video. I was going to buy the Does it all drill bits" which are cobalt, titanium and tungsten carbide, but I saw a you tube clip where they did not preform as shown on tv. Infact a regular drill bit out performed them. I need to drill through some very hard metal. The 1/2" drive of the Makita DWT1002 impact wrench, because I need a hole in it to put the socket pins through. Its VERY hard metal, probably as hard as the 55. Is there a drill bit that can do this. Thank you

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад

      Hi, if you need to drill in 55 RC material you may need to get carbide tooling, this is real hard for even the best HSS with Cobalt, you'll run the risk of destroying the Cobalt bits, as with carbide, make sure you're having a stable set-up or you may experience some breakage...

    i got a 230 pack of HSS titanium nitride bits from Canadian tire for $20 mixed sizes 1/32'' too 1/2''. the 1/8'' bits at a low speed go right thru hard 12gage hot roll sheet, the metal comes off in chips not twisted strands. adding oil doesn't seem to make a difference at the low speed i was going... 100-150rpm. but $20 for 230! few years ago i seen they were 2-4 bucks a piece.

      Got a set of those also from Canadian Tire, the 1/16 to 1/2" index, never even tried, it's been in my drawer for at least over 15 years... That should do an interesting comparative item... ( Got a few more indexes in the same condition, this is called the " On special at Canadian Tire Syndrome " it also goes for many other items like screwdrivers sets, pliers sets, etc...
      It's been a while since I purchased stuff at Canadian Tire on special..... Sincerely hope I'm cured for good, at least one addiction less to worry about.. lol
      My set of drill bits to do most of ops is a set of those CT with the Titanium oxide you just seen in the video, with the proper grond and care those are quite surprising...
      Guess that if you get items from CT, you're located somewhere in Canada...?

      Right about the quality, surprising for the price... Got that 25 pieces in here, no official ted done yet, but seems the same material and quality, the grinds are quite good and accurate but a few don't have the split point ground into them...?? All in all it's an excellent purchase.
      Seen your video, was impressed to see that the 13mm was drilling quite exact...!!!
      For SS there is a sweet spot to achieve in order to make the drilling easier, normally it's slower and a little more pressure than other types of steel, you get to make a decent thickness chip that will pull away the most of the heat on it's way out.
      Nice and interesting work on your channel...!!! ;)

    How about M42 drill bits? Would it get through your 55 RC material?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад

      I'm not sure, haven't tried M42 drill bits, for material that hard I normally use some solid carbide drill bits, you make sure you get a solid set-up in order to use solid carbide tooling or it will break easy...

    • @asusreviews
      @asusreviews 5 лет назад +1

      @@pierresgarage2687 Yea carbide by itself is very brittle so it can break easily if everything isn't done correctly. I've used M42 drill bits to drill out spot welds because HSS wasn't cutting it and would dull very quickly. The M42 lasts several times longer.

    certainly cobalt drills make a difference, i had to dril la hole through pipe wrench handle (to hang it up), a normal hss was justing burning itself, i sharpened it 3 times, got nowhere, barely scratching the surface, tried a cobalt-hss, went through it like it was mild steel, no drama

    • @pierresgarage2687

      Since you got numerous qualities of drill bits from really soft carbon type to cobalt HSS in steel and then the carbide ones, you want to get what will perform in your usual type of usage, as the price goes up rapidly when you increase in quality...
      For the price of those you get excellent quality near the price of cheaper and less perfoemant tools from other retailers... ;)

      Yes. The TiN coating on some of those cheap drills must be in the few millionths thick range, because it rubs right off, leaving the cheap base metal to fight the losing battle... TiN looks pretty, on some of the imports that have it it is almost transparent. Flash plating...

  • @EddieTheGrouch
    @EddieTheGrouch 7 лет назад

    Nice comparison - totally worth it's weight in TiN :P Dunno why folks get lured into coated drills of any brand. Maybe they were made for abrasive minerals in wood but only good for a few holes in steel. I've been using a cobalt set from HF for a few years and they seem about the same as the BG set. The bad part is that with any importer or chain brand you never know when they will change suppliers for the better or worse.
    Off hand, have you hardness tested any bed frame rails? I have a bunch and it would be cool to know a ballpark range to tell me if I can keep sharpen my drills or donate a kidney for some carbide drills.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 лет назад

      Right about the big National stores changing suppliers, most of the times to get a better price, so, not sure what we're getting in the long run...
      Bed frames reails are alloyed steel, the piece I just tested is around 22 RC, this is at least 2 to 3 times more than hot rolled or cold rolled steel. Just beweare when welding to use for critical applications not to get cracking or fatigue failure...

    • @EddieTheGrouch
      @EddieTheGrouch 7 лет назад

      Would that happen to be about the same hardness of a cheap drill bit? Thanks for the info!

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 лет назад

      Depends on how cheap you're talking about...
      The lowest quality to me is the cheaper carbon drill bits, those are the ones they sell exclusively for wood working as the lowest priced entry price for occasionnal use...
      If you get some drills in the HSS type you should be able to get fair amount of use with a decent grind on the tip, those HF ones shown in the video would do all right but with a decent grind cause the factiry grind is some of the owrse I've seen so far...
      Here in Canada the HSS drill from CT set performed better and the original grind was lots better... Those drill bits are my all to go set for lots of my work, and, I regrind as they need it...

      I also just picked up a cobalt set from Harbor Freight, the 115 piece set, with their 25% off coupon. Ended up paying about $85 after tax and am absolutely thrilled with my purchase. I kept burning out their TiN coated bits in no time. But these are holding up MUCH better. Honestly, don't even waste your time/money on the cheaper sets. They're seriously awful. My Milwaukee TiN set has held up much better, so I can't say all TiN bits are trash. But the cobalt ones from Harbor Freight, as far as I can tell at least, are actually very high quality bits. I'm pleasantly surprised.

    I do not understand why you compared the harbor freight or CTbits which are HSS bits to a cobalt bit ?? Any brand of HHS will not do as well as a cobalt bit

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад +1

      The purpose of the video is to show that better quality and grade drill bits will get the job done in much harder material, the Cobalt bits are in deed more costly, but, also will make holes in much harder materials, so some viewers could understand that there are quite harder materials than others and that there are tools that can get the job done better than others, I've could also have shown the much lower limit of even cheaper carbon steel bits...

    Hi Pierre
    while this has the appearance of an unbiased comparison, you're in a way comparing apples to oranges as the metallurgy of the drills and their respective materials range differ considerably.
    the one question i would have is how do these bits behave/perform in deeper holes? do they drift at all with the factory grind, which drill bits out of chinese manufacture are notorious for?
    how accurate are they on the size of their holes? are they within spec of +/- 0.1mm?
    and while this may sound a tad crazy: how round are the holes the drill bits produce?
    granted for the home gamer they will more than do the job they need to do, however there are lots of pros out there in youtube-land like me who watch this sort of thing and would consider buying a set if they meet spec.
    cheers
    mike

      Hi Mike,
      You're right about getting great drill bits, it's more than just making holes, all the other parameters are also important, mostly in CNC machining where you need to minimize operations ant tool changes.
      This video was more to show how better drill bits were gonne perform so much better than ordinary ones, and how this could benefit a more casual user when they needed to get through tougher materials.
      If possible I'd like to make a video about the points you mentionned, time is an issue lately as the four of us kids need to take special care of both our parents who need special care as their life is getting closer to the end...

    Just a suggestion, but when you put a "bang good" flyer on the table in the middle of the frame of a video praising bang good drill bits, it makes it look like you're being paid by them. I KNOW you're not, and I KNOW you just put it there to be helpful, but people who don't know you might think there's funny business going on.

      Just to make things clear here, I've been approach by some Banggood representative to test for them some of their products, some of those products are given to me, some others like those drills bits, I've purchased and paid for just like you would yourself.
      Also I've made clear to them that I wasn't to promote any low quality product even the ones they give me.
      For more clarity at the beginning of the videos I'll disclose the source of the products and if wether it was given to me or if I paid for it, and, as a consumer and viewer you always need to use your best judgment in order to have the last word on your final decisions.
      My engagement to the viewers by making those reviews is to give my best and honest advice on some worthy products to the best of my knowledge, so other people will get at least some filtering from the bad quality products...
