Laura Nelkin Gauge Swatching in the Round
• #KnitTip: Gauge Swatch...
00:00 Introduction
03:28 #1 - Chain plying
07:28 #2 - Sharp and stretchy cast on
12:17 #3 - Swoop and Scoop SSK
16:40 #4 - Tool-free Cables
21:49 #5 - Float-free speed swatch - Хобби
Love the Swoop and Scoop technique. Have been unhappy with ssk for a long time. Thanks for the tips.
As a spinner, I enjoyed the chain ply demo for knitters. Hopefully helpful hint: Twist the chain ply in the opposite direction of the existing ply to help get it closer to a proper "3-ply" and round it out.
Excellent tip! Thank you 😊
I've watched many chain plying video done on spinning wheels, but this is the first time I have been able to follow how the chain is made. I'm sat here gleefully chain plying random balls of yarn! Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful! 😁
The difference between chain plying on a wheel and this method is that here Nicole isn't adding twist to the new 3ply yarn because it was already a plied yarn. As a spinner, I chain ply my single ply with opposite twist to how the single was spun. Knitting with Nicole's yarn will feel more like knitting with 3 separate strands together rather than one thick strand where the plies are wound around each other. But the structure of the chain is exactly the same and made in the same way - pulling a loop through a loop, just the same as in a crochet chain.
Yhanks!!! I am instantly using the better decrease. This sleeve looks so much neater.
And thank you for the knitting tips! I'm still really iffy in the knitting department, so love these tricks! It's magic!
I don’t think I’ll ever be brave enough to cable without a needle but that swatching tip is brilliant. Thank you!
I’ve done it. You should try it 😊
Just takes a bit of practise ❤
WHERE have you been in my knitting life?!!!! On the Norwegian twisted start and have NEVER been told about this! Going to have to come back to this site as it’s very late at night and I need to go to bed.
Welcome! It’s great to have you here 😁
Will definitely use the swatching trick. I’ll be swatching for a summer tee soon.
So helpful go have the tips quick and easy to find like this! I had heard of some of these before, but I never seem to remember to them. I saved this video and am sure I be coming back to it often!
And so sorry you're sick, hope you feel better asap!
Glad it was helpful! I’m on the mend, thanks 😊
Loving the ssk and swatching in the round - thank you! I already slip one knitwise, slip one purlwise for my ssks which gives the same result but doing it one movement makes it super speedy. The little tug of the second stitch is also something I'd not thought of. Saving this video for future reference! 😊
It's so great to get a response. I've always wandered (deliberately spelt incorrectly) 😊😊about combination knitting.
You are the first person to show SSK holding the needles in the same way I do. Until now I couldn't wrap my head around it. Now, I'm looking forward to try both the traditional SSK and your method. Thank you!
Great! I hope it works well for you. 😊
I used this swatch in the round method this week for the first time and like it a lot!
Yay! That’s great to hear 😊
That’s amazing thanks I will definitely use this in future
First time catching you & you’re delightful❣️ Sorry you’re sick & thank you for all of the tips. Can’t wait to see more of your work & when you’re feeling better😘🙏🏿💗
Thank you so much!! ☺️
I like listening to you so much that I let this video play. I knew most of the tricks until you got to that last watching trick. I’m so glad I kept watching, you are wonderful.
Oh, good! I was so hoping there would be something new for everyone 😊👍
Fantastic! I have Patty Lyons book but seeing your video has really helped cement these tricks in my brain. Your teaching style is perfect. Thanks so much.
Glad it was helpful!
hi i enjoyed watching you i am a new knitter i like what you are wearing
Excellent video a great group of magic tips I am looking forward to trying.
Hope you are feeling better soon.
Thank you! I’m on the mend, slowly but surely 😋
Wonderful tips. Thanks!
This was great! I just finished a swatch and washed it. I think I will use the same yarn and try one this way to see how I do. I never swatch in the round and I know I should as that is what I usually knit. I got to take my kids to Salem Mass at Halloween time one year many years ago. I bet it's changed and gotten even better! Thanks for all your creativity and inspirations.
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant tips. Some I used and new. Thannk
Oh my! The swatching is genius!
Great video.I’m saving it.
Pretty slick! Thank you!
I´m so happy I found you, it´s so much fun to watch your podcast
Yay, thank you!
Wow. Very interesting and useful! Especially triple stranding. I’ll definitely be trying that very soon! Thank you 😊
You’re welcome!
Thank you for this terrific video- really leaning so much from your channel! Working on my first speed swatch now and have been coming back to this video a few times the last few weeks (to do ssk and german cast on). Hope you are feeling better!
Thank you! I’m all good now 😊
i was like "where is she going with this" as you pulled your strand through the slip knot and by your third triple strand i suddenly realized. my jaw was on the floor
I hope you were able to get it back in place! 😉😋
Great tricks. Love the pretty wand.
Thank you! Cheers!
The chain plying is incredible! What genius invented this? I love it! Thank you!
Thank you! It’s also known as Navajo stranding, so I’m guessing it’s got some deep roots 😊
Hello, the last tip is great, thanks I didn't know this!
Okay I'm looped in on this chain plying! I have a bunch of lace weight cones that scare me to death and I was dreading using them though I adore the colors. Now I can make things with them! ❤❤ And the ssk tip is beautiful! Thank you and please feel better soon 🙏
You’re so welcome! I’m improving every day, thanks ☺️
Thanks so much. Great tips. Feel better soon.
Thanks so much!
Very useful thankyou xxx
So helpful.
Love those tips , swatching in the round drives me crazy with all the yarn in the back.
Awesome tips! Where have you been all my knitting life?! Subscribed and checking out more if your vids.
Thanks so much! 😁
Thank you! I especially like the SSK tip. :)
You’re welcome!☺️
Thanks a lot ❤
Excellent video, I'm definitely going to try that SSK! Good to know that Oscar is on duty, keeping things safe and informing you of anomalies! 🤣
Ha ha! He’s got that part of his job down pat 😋
Love your videos & humor!!!
Yay! Thanks for watching 😊
I’ll try the triple stranding, thanks!
I’ve lately been shying away from both long-tail and Old Norwegian (my favorite) cast-ons for large numbers of stitches due to the twisting of my yarn. Thanks for suggesting the butterfly.
You’re welcome! It really works 😁
Love that swatching in the round trick! Will definitely try it. Thanks so much for creating and sharing.
You are so welcome!
I am knitting a sock now, I am trying that SWOOP AND SCOOP. Thank you! Rachelle in Seattle
Yay! 😀
Great tips. Thankyou
You are so welcome!
"The badliest" I love it 🤣💖
Absolutely maniacal!
Ha ha! I warned you I was “off” 😂
Thanks for the modified SSK. This has always bugged me, and I'm working on a sweater now where I needed this. Tried it for a few rows, and it's perfect! I'm considering ripping out my first 4-5" to start over!
Trust me, you won’t regret re-doing it! 😊
Love the SSK - will be trying that out asap! Not brave enough to go cable knitting without my prop (too shaky!), will try your swatch method out too. Great magic tricks! 🎩 Get well soon!
Thank you! I’m almost all better 😊
I drop stitches enough as it is , i think I'll stick to the extra needle
the swatching trick - mind blown!! i'll be trying out the swoop and scoop for sure on my next pair of socks. it annoys me how my SSK side looks a bit sloppy compared to the k2tog side on my toe decreases.
Right?? It makes me so happy to have tidy SSKs. It’s the little things sometimes 😉😋
1692. Many of them were hanged. One of those hanged was my 9th great grandmother. I know that Salem is a tourist trap these days, but it saddens me that the fate of these innocent women and all the history is lost.
The monument built into the hillside took my breath away. Their words carved into stone as impressive.
Thank you for this. You have my profoundest apologies for coming across as flippant and uncaring about what happened to your great grandmother and the others falsely accused. It is never my intention to make light of harm done. I was in a rush, not feeling myself, and was careless, but those are no excuse for being unthoughtful. I am truly sorry and will do better in the future.
@@Knicoleknits Thanks for your response. Apology accepted. Happy knitting! 🧶
My 10th great grandmother was Anne Hutchinson, who was tried as a witch and exonerated and was later killed by Indians.
@@joycelytton7789 Wow! That’s incredible family history. What an unimaginable ordeal for her 😢
Awesome tips!
I like the ssk alternative.
I’ve done the chain ply to make a 3-strand yarn, but I don’t like how sometimes you can see the 3-strands of yarn in your fabric.
As a spinner, what I do is overspin the entire ball of yarn Z onto a bobbin, then (putting that bobbin onto a lazy Kate), chain-ply it onto another bobbin S.
I know not everyone has access to a spinning wheel (or wouldn’t consider doing this), but I find it certainly gives a better looking yarn result.
Watch Oscar with that wand!!!!!
Thanks for the spinner’s perspective. I know zip about spinning, so this info is always appreciated! 😊
Thank you!
You're welcome! ☺️
Thank you for the excellent tips. I just found you and already I’m your biggest fan! I love your style. So great😊
I was devastated to hear that the needles you’re using in the video are no longer being produced. Can you suggest some that are similar to these? They look exactly like what I’m looking for but just can’t find. So happy dI found your site😊
Thanks so much! I’m glad you’re here 😊 I’m always in the lookout for needles that could replace my Signatures. I’ll definitely keep you posted if I find something! 😋
I live in Salem!! It’s a fabulous place to live for many reasons!! ❤❤❤
That’s so cool! Fascinating place, for sure 😊
@@Knicoleknitsit is absolutely beautiful except during October when it’s chaos because of all the tourists who descend on Salem for Halloween lol. 😂
Real magic going on here! :) Get well soon 💐
Thank you 😁
I use the Navajo plying for my spinning wheel yarn you only need to spin one thin ply to achieve a 8ply yarn that contains more air and there for is warmer to ware as well as having a softer feel.
Great info! Thanks so much 😁
OMG!!! How have you not shown up on my RUclips Feed before? I Love your style!!! and have just subscribed. Thankyou !!!
Quick question: in the speed swatching part you were knitting into the backs of some of the stitches at the beginning/end of the rows- Why ?
Thanks for subscribing! I was doing that to tighten up the edges because the edge stitches tend to loosen up with this method 😊
I’m not afraid to say it! “Twisted Sister cast on!” Sorry - could not exercise self-restraint 🤔😬😂
Ha ha ha! Love it 😍🤣
just curious why you do your knitting in the back loop instead of the front? @Knicoleknits Knows Knitting
I see on the last sample you knit reg= in the front. So it isn't something you do all the time, I guess.
EDIT: AMAZING!!! Thank you for sharing all of this.
I’m currently switching back and forth between two knitting methods, so sometimes I might have my stitches mounted differently and need to knit through the back loop to correct the mount. I must be doing it automatically, without thinking about it or I would have noted it in the video 😋
Thank you for that!! (Chain plying). Do you end of with a mess of yarn on the floor or knit as you go? I'm thinking of caking on my yarn winder. I have a huge amount of sock yarn and neither the patience nor the eyesight to use it as is.
I either ply the whole thing ahead and then hand wind it into a ball, or, if I’m impatient 😏, I’ll ply as I go 😊
Such a shame that you got a trainee at the wand shop; he should have offered you the medical add-on for a few dollars more and that would have taken care of your covid germs! Thanks SO much for the improved SSK!!
Ha ha ha! Hilarious 🤣
To drop any stitches I always ONLY do them on the purl side. I always have a neat and tidy line
I just learned this way of swatching somewhere else too and I think it's genius! 😊
PS I have missed seeing you at Small Gods in Sidney on the second Sunday of the month.
I KNOW! Every month I think I’m going to make it and every month I have a conflict! One of these months I’ll get there again. I always think about you folks 😊
@@Knicoleknits how about tomorrow? 😊
@@cathyschuetze It’s almost 100% that I can be there tomorrow!!
Great video! Great techniques! But, was I imagining it, or when you were cabling without the needle were you knitting through the back loop in places? Just wondering...Hope you feel better soon.
Thank you! I am feeling better 😊 I don’t think I was knitting through the back loop. I may have done so here and there because I had tinked back and had the stitch on the needle in the wrong mount. Otherwise, no back loops 😊
Would you use your manic wand and show me where I put all my knitting needles when I gave up on learning to knit! Ugh! 💗🧶
Ha ha! I’ll give it a shot 😋
💕😀xx Thanks Nicole. 🥰
You’re welcome 😊
Wow, I so enjoyed your magical tutorial. Bit of a fairy freak myself. I would have to say that the "no cable needle" scare me 👻. I noticed that whilst you were doing the cable you knitted through the back of the loop?
Thank you! I’ll have to go look and see what I was doing there, but I suspect it was because I tinked back at some point and my stitches needed to be remounted. If you want a better understanding of that, I explain it all in my video on Combination knitting 😊
Hi i love your cardigan. Almost finished the little baby girl cardi. Can you please tell me how to make a bigger size.
Thank you
Thanks for watching and for your question, but I’m afraid I don’t know which cardigan you’re referring to. I don’t believe I showed one in this video 😊
I have just found you………brilliant, excellent, fantastic!!!!!!!!! Love your tips and tricks, and I have fallen in love with the cape/shrug/ gorgeous thing you are wearing 💕 may I ask you where I could get a pattern for it ? Lots of love from Melbourne, Australia ❤️🌸🌹🌼🌺
Ooo…I am DYING to visit Melbourne! The pattern is Tyria by Amy Christoffers. It was published in the Berroco booklet #402 - Berroco Vibe. 😊
@@Knicoleknits thank you so much 💕. If you ever make it to Melbourne there is a lovely warm, comfortable guest bed, terrific comfort food ( I love to cook), and great conversation, plus a free tour guide waiting for you ❤️🍷🍷🍷🌼🌺
Been some time since I've heard of anyone getting covid. :( I skipped through looking at them to see if there was anything new . Oh I like the Patti Lyons hint , will have to look up more.
What is this "speed swatch"? What kind of project would you use that for? Thank for the great tips, I love to learn new tricks. Thank you 🙏
A speed swatch is a particular method of swatching that duplicates knitting I the round without actually having to knit in the round (hence the “speed” part). Laura Nelkin has a great video on speed swatching 😊
@@Knicoleknits thank you so much
Wonderful tips. Just curious why you are knitting through the back loop right to left rather than traditional left to right. Thanks.
If you tell me where you saw me do that, I should be able to explain why ☺️
Here on 5 Slick Tricks Knitters Should Know You Tube video.
One too sure that you may even check the comments now, but thankyou first for the tutorial, it’s great. Secondly I love your featured top. Is there pattern please?
@@lorrainecarlton9588 I read ALL my comments and reply to questions as quickly as soon as I’m able 😊 The pattern for the capelet I’m wearing is called Tyria by Amy Christoffers 😁
Loving your channel, I am learning so much even though I have been knitting for years - thank you so much. x
Yay! It’s so great to have you here 🥰
What brand knitting needles are you using in this video? Thanks
They are Signature needles. Unfortunately, they stopped producing them last year, but you might find some used somewhere. Brace yourself…they are pricey 😉💰
Could you let me know where I can find the tutorial for top down knitting? And is there a way to avoid raglans in the sweater? Thank you, I like your videos!
Thank you for watching! I’m sorry, but I’m not clear about which parts of the video you’re referencing. Can you tell me in which segment I talked about this? 😊
@@Knicoleknits You mentioned a tutorial about knitting sweaters top bottom, that's all I know. I would like to try this way of knitting a sweater, so I won't have to seam anything. If you can't help me, no problem.
@@rosagielen7757My best recommendation is go to Tin Can Knits website and use the search function to find their top down sweater tutorials. They have them for both top down raglan and round yoke 😊
Can you help me? My knitting sides are horrible!!! Just cannot get them to be the same. The first three stitches on one side are loose... The other side the first three stitches are tighter... I use longer needles like we do in Italy. I M trying to use the method you do but I am St the beginning of this teaming session. I ve been knitting for many years, same problem as you initially... Messy work. But I will not give up. Thanks for your help.
See my response to your comment on the Untidy Tension video ☺️ Happy knitting!
I’m a left handed knitter. Would the SSK and cable trick work the same way for me?
They should work fine. Give them a go and let me know if you run into any issues 😊
This works really well with a spinning wheel and it will be plied too.
Is there a twisted long tail cast off to match the cast on?
Your timing with this question is flawless - I'm just working on testing a few potential matching bind offs on a current project. I'll let you know how it goes. 😊
I searched on Swoop and Scoop SSK and got one knitting video and few others on how to put on a bra lololol.
Ha ha! 🤣
I enjoyed this video so much and learned some very useful tips! I have a constructive suggestion... While watching your tip for cabling without a cable needle I noticed that you're knitting into the back of the stitch. As an experienced knitter, I can see that your stitches are mounted in reverse. A beginner or less experienced knitter may not realize this and think it's part of the cabling technique. Thanks for this video!
You are so right! I must have been remounting stitches out of habit. I definitely should have noted that while I was doing it 😊
Hope you feel better soon
Thank you ☺️
who knew. thanks
Why is it you knit the first couple ans last couple of stitches through the back loop? I’ve never seen this before thanks
I do that to twist the stitches at the edges. This helps keep the edges from loosening up as I handle the swatch. I only do it for this particular type of swatching. 😊
Get on with it… you said it was going to be quick!!!
Where is your Martini 🤭😉🥰. You are so funny. Keep it up❤
Ha ha! Sometimes it doesn’t make the cut 😉
@@Knicoleknits 🤭🤜🏻🤛🏻👍🏻🥰
Darn, that fast ssk trick I would have liked to know before I nearly finished a lace shawl with about a gazillion k2tog and ssk... Oh well. Next time!
Ha ha! Sorry, I’m posting as fast as I can 😉😋
@@Knicoleknits Oh, don't worry, I still have several hours of ssk ahead of me :) I'm knitting Nim Teasdale's "Don't Panic".
@@juliajs1752 Wow! That is a spectacularly gorgeous shawl. I’d love to see your FO when you’re done. 😊
That’s great. You just taught an old dog a few new tricks. 😂
Excellent! My work is done here 😉😁
Really like the SSK trick! But not the cabling without a cable needle. I love knitting cables, but don't like the idea of slipping stitches off the needle. Nope. Not for me.
I understand. You definitely need to feel confident that you could manage the odd dropped stitch. Maybe someday you’ll feel like you can try it 😊
Why do you knit through the back on the ends of your swatch?
I do that to tighten up those edge stitches, which tend to loosen up quite a bit in this type of swatch. 😊
I like fingerling yarn. I need a magic way to turn worsted yarn into fingerling yarn.
Ha ha! As soon as I figure that out, I’ll let you know 😁
Do make key chain any animals on addi knitting machine ❤😂🎉 can you send me the pattern
I prefer using a cable needle and then I don't drop a stitch in my cable which is a nightmare. Thanks for the tip though.
I totally understand. You do what works for you! 😊
With your magic wand, you look like a fairy God mother 😊
Ha ha! Love that ❤️
💖💐🌹🌹🌹💡⭐
That’s chain plying without a spindle or spinning wheel….
The pseudo- chain plying is a great way you can use up leftover fingering weight yarn. It also can minimize pooling/flashing from variegated yarns. Stephen West did a video on it a few years ago- you could make a cool penguono this way.
