Thanks for the room on the top floor! 10/10 would stay at this hotel again! 👍 But seriously, thanks for all the promotion you been doing for our album in your videos lately.
I appreciate how deep you've gone in terms of finding and reviewing underground black metal. It's been a strong year for black metal, and in addition to this list I have to shout out 2 fantastic Ukrainian black metal albums: Waidelotte: Celestial Shrine and They Came From Visions: The Robes of Twilight. I also want to shout out my 2 favourite albums, and should appeal to anyone who loves pressive/folk black metal: Wandering Oak: Resilience and Amiensus: Reclamation Part I and II (the latter features a guest spot from Lars of Borknagar).
I gotta give you credit for pronouncing Thy Catafalque's album title flawlessly! :D You should give some other Hungarian black metal bands a try (in case you haven't), like for example Sear Bliss or Bornholm. Cheers from Budapest, Hungary!

2024 was a decent enough year for black metal. I’ve heard great things about Austere but never checked them out. I’ll do so after this video. I know the slow, melancholic sound isn’t your vibe but I do dig that Katatonia style so I might dig them. Anyways, here’s my ranking of these albums I’ve listened to: S - Borknagar - Fall, Necrowretch - Swords of Dajjal, Hellbutcher - Hellbutcher, Spectral Wound - Songs of Blood and Mire, Winterfylleth - The Imperious Horizon, Kanonenfieber - Die Urkatastrophe, Thy Catafalque - XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek, Oranssi Pazuzu - Muuntautuja, Schammasch - The Maldoror Chants: Old Ocean, Black Curse - Burning in Celestial Poison A - Inquisition - Veneration of Medieval Mysticism and Cosmology Violence, Darkspace - Dark Space -II, Mütillation - Black Metal Cult, Ihsahn - Ihsahn, Blaze of Perdition - Upharsin, Dödsrit - Nocturnal Will, Kvaen - The Formless Fires, Sabbat - Sabbaticult, Wormwitch - Wormwitch, Seth - La France des Maudits, Akhlys - House of the Black Geminus, Krallice - Inorganic Rites, Spite - The Third Temple, Horna - Nyx-Hymnejä Yölle B - Hulder - Verses in Oath, Midnight - Hellish Expectations, Bewitcher - Spell Shock, Ævangelist - Perdition Ekstasis Meta, Gaerea - Coma C - Rotting Christ - Pro Xristou, Darkthrone - It Beckons Us All D - God Dethroned - The Judas Paradox, Esoctrilihum - Döth-Dernyáhl, 1349 - The Wolf and the King
I love see these tierlists because they are always interesting from a personality stand point. Like I agree with nearly all of your choices, except borknagar and necrowretch. I'd lower those to B/A. Hulder probably would go A for me too. And like.. that's cool af.
I only had the time to go through the entire video right now and am quite surprised to not see Paysage D'Hiver among the contenders. Not a criticism, mind you, just thought it was curious, considering how big of a band and release it is.
Perhaps he was turned off by Tobias's work with the Darkspace album at the beginning of the year he moved on. But I'll agree...the new PDH project is quite strong....I've been enjoying the trance-inducing slow/blast throwbacks to Das Tor, which I consider a masterpiece.
My best black metal of the album was Beyond the Palest Star, but can totally see why others didn't really dig it. Just hit my ears in the exact right way.
Kanonenfieber - Die Urkatastrophe just so good man, my favorite black metal album of this year. And my favorite album after death is little more by boundaries
i disagree with some of your choices, but ultimatetly am glad that your giving this stuff a fair chance even if you're not into a good chunk of it. Some bands that also deserved to be mentioned were Vampirska's new album, Mantiel's new album, once again Paysage D'Hiver is the GOAT, Heresiacrh is also up there in best releases for the year (War Metal but close enough) Cultus Mortem had a sick EP, Avmakt is compossed of a bunch of norwegian heavy metal guys who made an amazing 90's Darkthrone worship album, Serpent Column, Gravenchalice and Abhorration.
You'll need to check out Dawn Treader's album Bloom & Decay. My favorite album overall this year. Other black metal I've dug this year: Dodsrit, Saidan, and Panzerfaust
I'm shocked dawn treader isn't being brought up more. I guess because it's the first album from a solo RABM guy so not really much advertising? But idk, I saw austin from panopticon hyping it up and it was in my top 20 albums (out of like 400) easily. Out of this world atmoblack. Like if anyone loves panopticon, agalloch, alda, winterfylleth, etc, Dawn Treader's Bloom & Decay is a must listen.
My Black Metal ranking this year: 1.) Rottting Christ - Pro Xristou (Helenic Black Metal) 2. )Gaerea - Coma (unblack Black Metal) 3.) Labyrithus Stallarium - Vortex Of The Worlds (Perfect Trance and Black Metal mixture) 4.) Blaze Of Perdition - Upharsin (Perfect Mixture of Behemoth and Mgła) 5.) Hautologist - Hollow (Side Project of Mgła Drummer. First 4 Songs are Black Metal, 5 Song is Neofolk, Rest is Post Punk) 6.) FLOSCULE - Ї (Post Black Metal meets Crust Punk) 7.) Thy Catfalque - XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek (Black Metal meets Post Metal) 8.) Alcest - Les Chant de l'Aurore (Blackgaze mixed with Post Metal. Very Pop but still great Black Metal parts) 9.) Völva - Desires Profane (female Blackmetal mixed with Crust Punk) 10.) Kanonenfieber - Die Urkatrastophe (World War 1 related blackened Death Metal. IMHO the first record "Menschenmühle" was better) 10.) Ershetu -Yomi (side project from the Blut Aus Nord Singer. 2nd album, this time with japanese instruments) 11.) Behemoth - XXX Years Ov Blasphemy ("Live" Best Of of the earlier stuff, not as good audio quality as "In Absentia Dei") 12.) Marschland - Traurige Trinklieder (German Black Metal Legend Fäulnis doing now some Neofolk infused drunk songs - so it probably doesn't count but still is very good - at lesst the first 2 songs are great)
@@MosquitoDoidoMaluco ikr? I read that and instantly went "wait what?!" and then started googling to find... not really unblack. If I were to tag them it would be "modern black metal" but that's not descriptive nor even fully accurate. They're black metal... with some DSBM elements and maybe some prog. But they aren't prog in the "prog" sense of the word, but prog more like how sermon is progressive rock/metal. Like, they are prog, but it doesn't fit the mold of what "prog" means to most people. Yes I'm a nerd lol
I recommend to check out Laetitia In Holocaust album "Fanciulli D'Occidente", one of my favs BM albums dropped this year. These other too: *Ceremony of Silence - Hálios *Ensom - Poimandres *Artefacts - The Titan Chronicles Part II: Lucius *Corpus Diavoli - Elixiria Ekstasis 🤘🏻🐼
Thanks for recommending Alkhemia - Abraxas. It's great, I ordered the CD right away. I wonder why the album The Pale Riders from France wasn't on the list. They released one of the best Black Metal albums in 2024, in my opinion, next to Gravenoire?
I know technically Abigor released their last album digitally the last week of 2023, but I regard Taphonomia Aeternitatis: Gesänge im Leichenlicht der Welt as a 2024-release. So that`s my #1 BM-release. Akhlys is #2.
I totally get you not wanting to do this again. It can get exhausting listening to bad black metal bands all the time. At the same time, this list has shown me that I have not listened to a whole lot of black metal this year. Maybe that's a good thing? Hahaha. Some of my favourites from your list: Hoplites - Παραμαινομένη Labyrinthus Stellarum - Vortex of the Worlds Aevangelist - Perdition Ekstasis Meta Al-Namrood - Al Aqrab Veilburner - The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom Oranssi Pazuzu - Muuntautuja Hauntologist - Hollow 1349 and Darkspace were okay. I was disappointed with Schammasch. Didn't hear Thy Catafalque yet. Too much to listen to. Totally get why you won't want to do this again next year. :)
I think the reason I can tolerate so much bad black metal is 1. it already sort of exists in the background, so I don't feel as if my time is being wasted or I'm being aggravated. 2. because when the black metal is good, oh. my. fucking. god. is it good. My top 10 favorite albums of all time are all black metal albums. But god do I have memories of the stinkers. Thy Catafalque is odd, I liked their prior album more, but it's rising to the top of lists, so worth a listen. Personally my favorite black metal albums this year were those from Aquilius, Dawn Treader, amiensus, kanonenfieber, dodsrit, among others.
New Selbst was amazing. I forgot but there is one Dissonant Death Metal album this year with similar album cover, can anyone help me coz I loved that album too lol
For Mutiilation, is there anything in their discography that utilizes shorter song writing? That little snippet sounded amazing, but I don't know how I'd feel about that for longer writing. It seems like it would get cacophonous after like 35 minutes.
I hear ya on black metal releases. I kinda feel the same way about death metal, but I feel like there's a bit more interesting stuff going on there. A couple that I feel aren't getting talked about are Mork - Syv, and Bipolar Architecture - Metaphycisize. Bipolar Architecture is more black gaze/post black so including that one might piss off some of the true cvlt fanboys, but I think its a killer album. Mork is great if you love old school 2nd wave with a folk twist - similar to Kampfar and Windir.
By looking at your top tier list, it's clear, you're over black metal... can't blame you, it ended 20 years ago. I'm with you on that, I've moved on from that long ago, still enjoy your content and enjoy your videos. Merry Happy from the land of demons, Van Diemens Land!!!
It would be interesting to see your ratings for Solar Temple's A Gift That Should Have Been Reserved For The Great Lights and nishaiar's Enat Meret. Especially as nishaiar is the only black metal band in Ethiopia, and one of only a few in Africa. And not a hoax, like Giza Uchawi.
Whoredom Rife - Den Vrede Makt Sun Worship - Upon The Hills Of Divination Vredehammer - God Slayer Pestilent Hex - Sorceries Of Sanguine And Shadow Nachtmystium - Blight Privilege Misotheist - Vessels by Which... Verwoed - The Mother Deus Mortem - Thanatos
Darkspace takes the crown for me this year. An experimental decision for them after almost breaking up and starting over with a new bassist. It doesn't sound like their old material for a reason.....the ambient/psychedelic/drone approach was intentional.
Darkthrone is just pushing out those records to fill their pockets. Even if they would release a record with 40 minutes of farting all the fanboys would still buy all the colored vinyl variations and call it masterpiece like every other album they have put out in past 20 years
I’m kind of dumb and can’t find this list on tier maker. I searched under “metal trenches” to find this list. I would like to see the list can I get some help finding this list?

Dude... they were there in Norway almost from the beginning. First album came out in 96 and was VERY much as important as anything from Mayhem and Darkthrone.
It wasn't meant to be a proper full length. Wroth confirmed it in an interview. It's an ambient/drone soundtrack to some speech he found and shared with the other members. They're writing their fifth full length now.

10.) Ershetu -Yomi (side project from the Blut Aus Nord Singer. 2nd album, this time with japanese instruments)
11.) Behemoth - XXX Years Ov Blasphemy ("Live" Best Of of the earlier stuff, not as good audio quality as "In Absentia Dei")
12.) Marschland - Traurige Trinklieder (German Black Metal Legend Fäulnis doing now some Neofolk infused drunk songs - so it probably doesn't count but still is very good - at lesst the first 2 songs are great)
"Gaerea (Unblack Metal)" NO WAY BRO TELL ME U ARE JOKING HAHAHAAHAHA
These other too:
*Ceremony of Silence - Hálios
*Ensom - Poimandres
*Artefacts - The Titan Chronicles Part II: Lucius
*Corpus Diavoli - Elixiria Ekstasis
🤘🏻🐼
Thanks for recommending Alkhemia - Abraxas. It's great, I ordered the CD right away. I wonder why the album The Pale Riders from France wasn't on the list. They released one of the best Black Metal albums in 2024, in my opinion, next to Gravenoire?
My favorite is Psychonaut 4 ~ ...Of Mourning
You missed probably Sur austru-Datura strahiarelor.. Romanian avant folk black from the ashes of negura bunget... Give it a shot
I know technically Abigor released their last album digitally the last week of 2023, but I regard Taphonomia Aeternitatis: Gesänge im Leichenlicht der Welt as a 2024-release. So that`s my #1 BM-release. Akhlys is #2.
Sear Bliss would’ve been a great addition
Labyrinthus Stellarum is absolutely amazing.
I totally get you not wanting to do this again. It can get exhausting listening to bad black metal bands all the time. At the same time, this list has shown me that I have not listened to a whole lot of black metal this year. Maybe that's a good thing? Hahaha. Some of my favourites from your list:
Hoplites - Παραμαινομένη
Labyrinthus Stellarum - Vortex of the Worlds
Aevangelist - Perdition Ekstasis Meta
Al-Namrood - Al Aqrab
Veilburner - The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom
Oranssi Pazuzu - Muuntautuja
Hauntologist - Hollow
1349 and Darkspace were okay.
I'll add these albums:
Griffon - De Republica
Aquilus - Bellum II
Yoth Iria - Blazing Inferno
Monolith - The Black Cradle
Damn- yeah I don't blame you if you don't want to do so again next year. Organizing 75 albums must have taken FOREVER dude!
@@TonehengeProductions It was a lot and there was so much more lol
@@MetalTrenches An endless onslaught of black metal!
New Selbst was amazing. I forgot but there is one Dissonant Death Metal album this year with similar album cover, can anyone help me coz I loved that album too lol
Chymist - Opus I: Nox
Aspernamentum - Primal Judgement Manifesto
Alburnum - The Withered Roots of Reality
ZØRZA - Hellven
Aara - Eiger
Coma is in my top 2 favorite black metal albums this year
same xD Aquilius - Bellum II number 1, coma number 2.
Whoredom Rife - Den Vrede Makt
Sun Worship - Upon The Hills Of Divination
Vredehammer - God Slayer
Pestilent Hex - Sorceries Of Sanguine And Shadow
Nachtmystium - Blight Privilege
Misotheist - Vessels by Which...
Verwoed - The Mother
Deus Mortem - Thanatos
FYI: Gaerea is from Portugal, not Spain and its pronounced "Gair-ee-ah."
I also noticed he said Portugal instead of Portland for Bewitcher 😆
If you listen to the band say their name, it almost sounds like one syllable. And yes sometimes I flub the location. My bad.
@MetalTrenches all good. Always great content man 🤘
Grylle was pretty good, too. But Inquisition took the cake this year. Still gotta check Houle.
Darkspace takes the crown for me this year. An experimental decision for them after almost breaking up and starting over with a new bassist. It doesn't sound like their old material for a reason.....the ambient/psychedelic/drone approach was intentional.
@@PadanFain-yp2yz Well of course it was intentional. How would a band do that accidentally?
@@MetalTrenches Too many people have kept thinking that it was the actual follow up to III I, which it isn't, is my main point.
Ploughshare - Second Wound should be here as well.
Might as well add MALCONFORT, LAMENTARI, TOGETHER TO THE STARS, and OUR THRONE to the pile.
And DJEVEL, what the hell.
Aquilus??? 😢
I drum for a band that has the vocalist from Volcandra (Chaos Sanctuary).. Unique prog death if people are into that kind of stuff
Where’s Groza?? They dropped Nadir this year
Akhlys is my album of the year. I’m obsessed with their sound. They’re the reason I started my own black/death metal band.
Naas Alcameth is a genius when it comes to creating extreme music. I highly recommend his other projects as well.
It's incredibly hypnotic
Darkthrone is just pushing out those records to fill their pockets. Even if they would release a record with 40 minutes of farting all the fanboys would still buy all the colored vinyl variations and call it masterpiece like every other album they have put out in past 20 years
I’m kind of dumb and can’t find this list on tier maker. I searched under “metal trenches” to find this list. I would like to see the list can I get some help finding this list?
He has posted timestamps and Artist - album in the video description if that helps.
@ thanks

@@MetalTrenches Thank you very much..
Wormwitch might be my favorite Black Metal band next to Blackbraid.
Liminal Shroud - Visions Of Collapse
Yoth Iria
Panzerfaust
Cistvaen
Ihsahn is possibly the best produced record of the year
You miss Kir - L’appel Du Vide these guys are so talented.
No Aara 😥
Probably came out too late in the year for him to really form an opinion on it. It’s a stellar record, already one of my favourites of the year!
@@wheelsofmercury I’ll mention it in the December list.
@@MetalTrenchesYES! Can’t wait!
@@wheelsofmercury I suspected that, looking forward to seeing the December List.
@@MetalTrenches Along with this one, another worth checking out is the new Ungfell
Tank you
Where is Hellven by Zørza? Polish black metal
Also Halny "Zawrat" is worth mentioning.

Trv Kvlt! 😂
❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Also, Akhlys
black curse居然排在第四档,我看你一点黑金属鉴赏能力都没有,别来霍霍黑金属了
Borknagar is black metal?
Dude... they were there in Norway almost from the beginning. First album came out in 96 and was VERY much as important as anything from Mayhem and Darkthrone.
@MetalTrenches ha I know, and no disrespect to them, I know the history, but I don't hear black metal when I hit play on new Borknagar
BLACK METAL??????
Hey, you forgot something. I just cant remember what. Way to gut it out, dude. The black metal fatigue is real and growing.
Wait... you put Darkspace in good, but you're not a fan? It's easily their worst album so where the hell would you rank their great albums? Lol
It wasn't meant to be a proper full length. Wroth confirmed it in an interview. It's an ambient/drone soundtrack to some speech he found and shared with the other members. They're writing their fifth full length now.
Opinions are opinions...but never say that a portuguese band is from spain.
Gaerea are from Portugal 🇵🇹 not Spain 😂
