I just found your channel. I am very impressed. I am from Alabama in the United States. I grew up in the country with my dad. He taught us the same way he was raised. If you were hungry, you grew a garden or you went hunting ( or fishing if you were near the river or pond). He taught us how to build different types of shelters depending on the situation. With everyone depending on technology these days ,it makes me so proud to see these type of skills still being used.

I will always be envious of the large amount of good, perfectly straight growing trees you guys have growing there! Such a blessing I don't have in the southeast United States.
Don't have access to large amounts of sheet moss either! Nor ferns in that quantity. Ain't complaining though. Natural cordage here in abundance, as is fatwood from our varieties of pine. Eastern red cedar bark tinder and I'm sure, often, more fire resistant earth, as red clay abounds on and just below the layer of forest litter. :-)
That's one of those things where you watch a video...then you want to do it. You go outside and realize you got nothing. Oh well. Maybe one day we'll all get lucky enough to build something like that.
HH, generally it's a matter of saving nickles and dimes to make dollars. Then buying the best your dollars can afford. Are there ways you can earn money to buy a budget hatchet? (There are decent budget friendly hatches on the market). Run errands? Mow a lawn? Birthday coming up? Let friends/family know what you'd like to have. Next, you don't have to have tall straight trees! The whole purpose of self-reliance, in the woods, is to use the resources around you. Native Americans, on the Great Plains, didn't have an abundance of trees in that vast grassland. Nor, did they have metal axes and saws. They are a wonderful example of making the best use, they could, of the resources available to them. Depending on where you live, you have a tremendous resource, peoples of that era didn't have -- neighborhood yard sales and second-hand stores. It may take a while, but you can build a decent kit, for pennies on the dollar by wise shopping. It all depends on what goals you set for yourself and how hard you honestly try to meet those goals. Modest goals and expectations are far easier to achieve. They, then, provide a good foundation to build upon. Just some words of advice, from an old timer who once didn't have a "nice hatchet" either! Godspeed in your journey.
Colby, everyone starts somewhere. Some are more fortunate than others. I see from your video listing that you do have the opportunity to get outdoors. I see that you are old enough to work a full or part time job to earn money to, at least, buy inexpensive gear to get started. Think about this: How big is a sheet of plywood? Easy it is 4' x 8'. Now think about what you can physically do with a piece of ground the size of a sheet of plywood. Build a shelter over it. Sleep on it. Cook on it. Practice knife skills on it, from feather sticks to battoning wood. Learn to tie knots on it. Learn to forage natural resources surrounding it. That's just a few things you can do in an area the size of a sheet of plywood. That is, if you really want to learn how to do them. Your choice, my friend. "Oh well" is a sign of being defeated before you begin. There are many, many outdoor's men (bushcrafters) do NOT have access to the resources needed to build "A Full Super Shelter". Many cannot build anything that has an air of permanence, because they are limited to using public recreation areas, if they want to get outdoors. Man, pick your self up by your bootstraps (an old cliche) and get outdoors. According to your videos, you have access. Then build your skills and resources. Luck has nothing to do with it. Grit, determination and doing the best that you can with what you have is often the true basis for success.

bush craft is alot of fun and hard work, I remember my first camp, I didn't use any tools that I bought, I knapped my own tools which took a long time, but it was worth it, the camp got destroyed by a storm and I lost the tools sadly, but I can always rebuild it

I built a "fort" one spring while I was expelled from school. Everyone I knew was in schoolbor workimg all day. I was bored and decided to be constructive with my time. I used alot of the same technics you guys used. My building was twonrooms downstairs two rooms upstairs. With a cantilevered balcony on the second floor. This was back in 1996 or 1997. Every couple years I hike out to the woods to check one it. Over the years several different kids jave added on to it. And taken parts down or parts have fallen down. The origional part that I built is still there though. Very cool guys.

Sometimes notching out the logs for your bed rails can be quicker and give you a tighter fit then making and pounding in stakes. Just another option and just my opinion. Both ideas work well. Great video!
Hi, I’m from Canada and our population is 27million . I live in Yellowknife Northwest Territories. On the north shore of Great Slave Lake. I have worked in the bush for mining exploration company’s . Spending anywhere to 3 to 6 months at a time. Most of the time was spent in two man camps. A few times I ran bigger camps up to 10 people. I love the bush but can’t work in the bush anymore my knees are worn out. Both of them need to be replaced. Your a pretty talented guy. I liked making my camp as comfortable as possible because you are going to be living there for a long time. Most of the work I did was done in the winter. The weather can be very cold . The winter of 1988 was the coldest I’ve ever experienced. The first week in December of that year we woke up to a temperature of - 84 C it stayed like that for almost 2 weeks. We stayed in camp fixing up our walk tents to make then warmer. A double fly on the roof banking snow around them all helped to keep us from freezing lol!!! A double layer of spruce bows helped also. We had air tight wood heaters which are very efficient. Seeing you working on your camp brought back memories. I know woke in tourism. We have a cabin in the bush . It’s off a highway totally off grid but we have done lots of upgrades. Indoor plumbing and electricity supplied by a generator. We have a battery bank which can supply power up to 16 hours. We work in the aurora tourism industry. We bring in Asian people to see northern lights. Our clients are mostly Chinese South Koreans and Taiwanese. I haven’t been able to break into the Japanese market yet . The pandemic stopped us in our tracks. Lost a hundred percent of our revenue. We still have the cabin to go to. My partner lives there year round. Are you on Facebook? Anyway keep up the good work. Totally enjoyed the video. Bye for now take care be safe.
Have had to pause it twice so far. Once to go to work, and once to go to sleep. I and a buddy used to do the same thing as teenagers - tho' not on such a grand scale. Excellent video - like the doggy, too!
I have really enjoyed watching your videos, I have recently been binge watching the show ALONE all seasons and a lot of their shelter builds are like several of your videos...thanks for sharing 😊😊
I live in the USA and I've watched your videos and I think what your doing is amazing this is the way homes and houses were built a hundred years ago and to see someone build like this in 2018 is just incredible . Just imagine if others like you(young people) start to live like this maybe global warming could be eliminated or is it eradicated
maude wick living like this would be like de evolving. A lot of human inventions have been invented so we don’t have to live like this. We would be vulnerable to the elements and natural disasters let alone wild animals. Also, I’m pretty sure a hundred years ago we weren’t building like this. I agree with you about the fact that global warming should be eradicated but not like this. More and more people are starting to be environmentally friendly and even just recycling would help. Sorry for the long paragraph I just wanted to give my opinion and a bit of facts.
@@Toadyru That's exactly the word Trump used before he began sabotaging it and then tweeting about how it was falling apart. Let's assume you're not as dumb as _that_ walking disaster. Obamacare had two stated goals, it accomplished one of them. It was not the "reform" of a corrupt system riddled with middle-men and parasites and accepted abuse, but then nothing the GOP has put forward has come close to accomplishing *ANY* goals, other than the ability of those with money to obtain the best services. Healthcare and Immigration need intelligent reform. But they're not getting it because of the ignorance of the American voting public and their avid desire to be manipulated and fearmongered on both sides.

nicely done! i built my first camp back in the 70s upstate New York in a very difficult to get to area ...was fun...my second camp was mostly in a cave i found on a 25 acre piece of land i purchased in the mid 80s what worried me abit was the black bear in that area so i was always armed and the door at the entrance was made with heavy hardwood logs, i upgraded that camp for 19 yrs until i sold the property. outdoors in the fresh air and weather...nothing like it

C'est vraiment génial de voir qu'il y a encore des personnes qui aiment la vie en forêt :). Continuez comme ça votre travail est super 👍.
this is the first video of yours I have watched.. I found it extremely informative. thank you for teaching us the viewers!
Awesome vid Mike. I've been a subscriber for about the last 6 months and truly enjoy your vids. I own 20 acres of heavily wooded property here in northeastern Vermont, USA (also called the NEK or Northeastern Kingdom) and I'm planning to build a bushcrafting camp on the rear of my property this Spring. Your vids totally inspires me mate and sharing time with your dad in the bush makes it magical. I'm 61 years young, retired and want to get more out my property here. You have kicked me in the arse to get on with my dream. Thanks for your dedication and YT vids. Cheers!

Cheers Luke glad you guys like it
I’ve watched the entire series and this video brings back some great memories. I’m watching your most recent video and as always the number of skills demonstrated is fantastic.
bush craft is alot of fun and hard work, I remember my first camp, I didn't use any tools that I bought, I knapped my own tools which took a long time, but it was worth it, the camp got destroyed by a storm and I lost the tools sadly, but I can always rebuild it
The fact that you can do it with out tools is impressive
Thank you for making this channel, Thank you for teaching me with your videos. Thank you for using your time wisely and knowing that other people need this for surviving outdoors.
Buffy would be super impressed with those stakes he made.
Omg i was skipping forward and all of a sudden i saw the older man there and i thought wow how long had he been working on this shelter... hes so old now lol

Bryan Keith what did you get expelled for?

Hey. I'm from Russia, I really like your videos.
It's kind of like the game "The Forest" but in real life and without the cannibals.

I'm not sure you know how long 100 years is, they definitely didn't build houses like this.

Obamacare was a disaster......
Facts
@@Murchad99 You're the minority fighting hard for a socialist program that failed in the USA. Most American disapprove of Obamacare.
