This is highlights of the Celtic Roundhouse build so far! Once lockdown in the U.K. lifts I’ll head back here to film an epic overnighter with Dustin. Working on a skills video for you guys which is a little different to the norm but I think you will enjoy it! Cheers for watching - Mike
What a corker build Mike, Fantastic teamwork and ingenuity. you guys will be more than prepared for when society collapses. absolutely love you and your dads channels. keep up the great work guys.
Hi Mike. Lovely looking thing. Me and some friends are also building one in our woods in Staffordshire. Could you share a link of where you get the thatch from? I'm struggling to source it. Cheers and great vid as always.
I wasn't paying attention at the start so I had no idea what the title was. By the time I looked up you were building the same kind of hut you built last time. I thought "That's very odd" so I did what I should've done from the start and read the title. Great job again on how this turned out!
My daughter introduced me to this video & I'm not disappointed. Learning how to live off the land like our ancestors did isn't an easy task, but it's extremely rewarding! Of course you guys make it look like a piece of cake! Thank you for the well done, informative videos looking forward to more.
Basically just by using the surrounding trees these guys create magic. When the snow goes away here in the northern part of Sweden I'm going to have a go at it.
Plan plan plan, and then plan some more before getting started. Then, get your materials together beforehand as much as you can of course. Good luck and have fun!
Yes, me too! Because I know I'm never going to see anything here that is dull, boring or humourless. It's all jolly good fun and educational too. They've inspired me a lot. I built a Long House in my woods, during 1st lockdown (March). Now a bushcraft centre for our twice annual kids' camp!
@@Ldw1665 I have never once not enjoyed and ended up "liking" one of his videos. Not once in a very, very long time. So, for me, it's just let's like this thing up front so I don't forget and get on with enjoying the vid. I promise if, after viewing, I end up not liking one I'll change my vote.
One of the most interesting videos I have seen. It was like magic, a solid shelter appears from nothing. Thanks for the shortest 40 minutes of film watching.
I love these and I love sharing them with my uncle who adores things done in the old ways. Your work really brings joy and entertainment to us, and many others.
Mike, I always think whatever shelter you're currently working on is my favorite. Then you go and build something else, lol! Wishing you and your family a sweet Valentine's Day. Hope your wife and daughter are doing well. 💟
Would not have been possible without the dogs' supervision. The mud and daub making and application must have been a daunting part of this beautiful creation.
Love the video. Love the work you two have put in to making your iron age round house. Ive watched you build everything in the woods. People who don't like this video are nuts. I enjoyed it very much ,especially from two of my favorite channel guys. I watched every bit of this video. Stay safe.
This is so awesome and very inspiring. In a day and age when the Mainstream Media seems to report insanity at a constant rate, videos like this that show just how far you can get with simple workmanship and hard work become highly sought after. I love this channel so much.
I enjoy watching you build these cabins with you’re dad it’s relaxing with everything that’s happening in the world, thank you for doing this. And you’re friends helping with the builds
If the world ever gets into a form of isolation from technology then I'll 100% go to TA Outdoors and his pals, these building techniques are downright cool. :)
Hi I've been waiting your adventure I'm one of your fan I enjoyed watching your doing well in your cool cabin ,I'm from Philippines keep it up, God blessed you and your family
These videos with all doing and no speaking are incredibly peaceful, relaxing and interesting to watch. So different than most bushcraft youtube, in a good way.
Cheers, very cool! enjoyed the peacefulness of it all, wish I could work that way, my two favorites words are, now what??? look forward to seeing more, thanks so much for posting this.
I was taught bush craft by my big brother and dad in the 195”’s. It kept a kid who was HD busy. I was also taught underground forts for winter warmth with wood burning stove made out of small barrel . These guys are fun to watch never saw so much weaving great ideal. In Michigan we had the use of wild grape vine. Strong cord. 👍🤗
Just ran across your channel, and thus far have not been disappointed, after watching your viking build. Since discovering that I have some scandanavian DNA in me, along with Scotish, Irish, British, and German, I have become more intersted in the Dutch/viking side of my line, coming from my late father. I am an avid watcher of the Old Time Team videos & Programs, and husband and I are supporters of the Current Time Team, so have some knowledge with the dates and the homes that different time periods had. Appreicate the hard work and your builds and videos. Great that some people in todays age can still preserve history and want to make things as did our ancestors did so long ago and keep some of that in present day. Thank you.
Love this! Blackening the posts to prevent rotting; the use of hand tools, the lack of voiceover so the viewer has to extrapolate information... Absolutely love it. I'd love to see you both build a glassworking kiln or an iron age smithy...
I'd love to see you guys build a North American Longhouse using hand tools and timber framing. Alas - that would take a very long time with the time ya'll have spare to work on it...It would be something to see though.
Do you remember the guy's name that moved up to Alaska back in the 60or 70s I believe, who moved up there to get away, built this beautiful cabin all by hand by himself and stayed up there until his death awhile back completely living off the land? He had filmed it all with an old Kodak and either he or someone else made a film, probably on public broadcast I remember seeing it.
Richard Proenneke was his name after I looked it up, recorded it all on 8mm which I had typed but didn't know if was accurate, Twin Lakes Alaska, built the cabin by hand in '67 and lived there for 36yrs, film that he made was named "Alone in the Wilderness". I remember watching it when I was young, I'm 38 or 39 now, I have no idea lol. I'm going to see if it's on RUclips now... great film if you haven't seen it, I suggest you check it out if you haven't.
Fantastic the way you systematized the framing and wattle & daub components. I think it made it go faster and look better than working it in place. Very fun video to watch. Thank you for taking the time to make it.
Great video. I’ve always wanted to build one of these. Just one thing I noticed is that you guys cut your wood pegs off flush. But since green wood shrinks as it dries pegged joints can can get really loose and even fall apart. Personally I would make the pegs more tapered & leave them sticking out so you can hammer them in tighter later as needed. This technique is common in historical timber frame construction. 1 second ago
Always enjoy watching your videos. I give thumbs up on my phone but watch on my television as much better picture. Thanks for sharing. Take care and stay safe x
That has to be the best ever thatch roof you guys ever built. A roundhouse has to be the most iconic of them all, and the dogs were nice to watch too. Oh, and as I have said in the past you always seem to eat so well. Great workmanship all around the roundhouse. Keep at it, my friends.
Every building you make seems to be bigger and better than the last one you built. You do an amazing job. Quite the extraordinary talent you have. And I love seeing you and your dad also in your videos. He makes me laugh.
The iron age Celts were VERY lucky. All that soft wood. so easy to work with. Here in Australia , almost ALL our native timber is hard wood, with many being harder than oak. Axes are not much use here,(sigh) Here, your main tool is a saw. Love your video's, by the way. VERY informative and entertaining..
Fascinating video. I love that not a single word was spoken through the whole thing. And thta you have 101 shaped wood tools made of trees for every coneivable purpose. If I had my own personal wood I would definitely try this.
When 1st comment means so much to people, that they leave ‘hi’ or ‘great video’, without even having watched the video 😂 priorities on point obviously.
They probably scrubbed through it to get to the best part and "left the crust" you could say.. But it'd be better to watch it thru-and-thru to actually learn to do something cool

Just out of curiosity is this type of build water proof by chance an if so then how dose it fair against the snow :?
Love it! The first time I saw a reconstruction Iron age roundhouse, I was overwhelmed with awe, and transported.

Those Silky saws and draw knives are so handy. I'm glad that out iron age ancestors had them.
