Viking House with Grass Roof: Full Bushcraft Shelter Build with Hand Tools

- Building a grass roof bushcraft viking house with hand tools. We build an icelandic - style turf roof viking shelter using simple bushcraft tools and natural materials from the forest. The tiny house is build using traditional hand tools, such as drawknife, auger, axe and saw. We built the timber frame from scots pine, making mortise and tenon joints and burning the ends of the logs that go in the ground. This is an ancient technique used by our ancestors, it helps to prevent the wood rotting by driving out bugs and forming a protective layer. To support the turf on the roof of the viking home, we used hazel hurdles. These are simply green hazel sticks woven together. When they dry they set hard and form a solid structure. We also built the perimiter wall of the bushcraft shelter using this woven stick method. This viking house was inspired by the vikings of iceland. Where trees were used in building regularly, they soon became scarce and so they had to improvise. Iceland has good quality sod, and plenty of stone. And so they built a large stone foundation and then used layers of sod and turf to insulate their homes from the strong atlantic storms. We had no stone in this woodland, but the overall style of the structure was inspired by these resourceful tribes. Thank you for watching.

You use twigs fer walls and logs fer a bed? Sum of Them twigs tied together like a raft would be springy and more comfortable . Use them logs to keep tha fire going cause I think its gonna be a long cold nite Cl;-(p)

He can also use it in the future. Beech is edible when used properly and can be pressed for oil. By moving it to the sun and rain he insures a future resource,plus,saves a tree.

Oh my gosh when the dog stole the hat I about peed laughing. What a perfect lil example of a jack Russell. Absolute precious chaos gremlins lol
These are designed to be satisfying, and it sure works for me. Sure, they're educational, but they're relaxing, satisfying. Every board fits, no nails bend, all logs are straight, all is cozy and warm. Their videos give an hour's escape away from frustration. Some people watch pimple popping, some watch chiropractors, I get relief from these guys. Absolutely love them.
And these videos are very time consuming, labor intensive just to film.
The no talking and focus on sound and great editing for a full sensory experience is pure genius. Wouldn't be the same if some bearded dude was yammering on about what he was doing. Really special work.
I will say I like the Townsends build videos where they explain the processes they went through in learning how to do things, but that doesn’t negate the fact this format works beautifully for these videos.
My pops passed away December 14th, and we spent MANY days in the wilderness together...bless you both.
There is something so soothing about watching TA build stuff. I could watch these videos all day.

Please understand that this is no offense, but I love the silent videos. Just the building and working. It is not that I do not want to her you talk, I enjoy this in other videos very much, but this is sooo soothing. I calms me down like nothing else. Keep the good stuff coming and belatet congrulations on your child, I will be a father too, in just a few months. I wish you and your family nothing but the best. (Sorry for poor grammar, I am a german and our school english is just ridiculously terrible :D )

I think about grass roof shelters quite often. It is such ancient technology that could be so beneficial. Some places can't have grass yards, but a grass roof could be very nice in the cities.
Yes that would be amazing. I once lived in a building that had a walled in flat roof top garden with grass, posted plants, shrubs and even some big potted trees. It was for us residents to use. Had some garden tables, umbrellas and chairs too.
Build in Barbecue etc.
This was in the middle of a big city. Was really great.

This is sort of like watching grass grow but mesmerizing. How many times can you watch them dig holes, saw, chop, make a fire, heat a kettle, etc? But I watched it all and rather enjoyed it.

I wish I lived in such an area. I am surrounded by farms, with very little in the way of woodland. You are truly rich to have so much to work with. Perhaps some day I shall have a plot like this. And I hope to still be healthy enough to build like this when I do.

The hat theft was the highlight of this video ! :D So cute.
In both types of houses shown here, they would put small bundles of straw on the floor to keep it warm and to keep them off of the ground. They show it in the documentary series Secrets of the Castle. Historian Ruth Goodman had an idea about how they would lay it out around the fire, and how the smoke from the fire indoors would kill bugs in the roof.
