    I somehow missed that we could grant exceptions to apps, for Controlled Folder Access. I had gotten really frustrated by not being able to edit/create files in those folders, so I removed them from the list. Armed with this vital bit of knowledge, I will soon make some changes. Thank you.

      It is turned off by default. You can turn it on but if you experience any errors from applications you will either need to allow exceptions or turn the feature off again.

    Would CFA on the external backup folder along with a protected image (Macrium reflect) be a good solution? Therefore I can format and restore my machine.

    • @RussellSmith
      @RussellSmith  2 года назад +1

      I would always recommend that there be physical separation between your backup and the device you are backing up. I.e. don't leave the backup file permanently attached to the device. It should be stored away somewhere and kept disconnected. If not every backup you do, but at least some of them so that you can always go back to a particular point in time.

    Apparently controlled folder access prevents unauthorized changes (encryption) to the folders HOWEVER even if the folders are not encrypted I would like to to know if that same ransomware can still steal copies of the folders and send them back to the attackers?
    I ask because apparently newer waves of ransomware can steal copies of files and folders and that makes the matter much worse than just encrypting since people have passwords, etc that they do not want stolen. Thank you.

    Can controlled folder access block malware or spyware or just designed for ransomware

    • @RussellSmith

      You must choose specific folders. It’s designed to stop ransomware encrypting your files. It’s not designed to protect Windows from attack.

      Are you signed-in as Admin, if so, then your permission to open the "Ransomware-protection", can be fixed in the Group Policy settings of Windows 10. I know this, because I had the same problem, which is now fixed!

      @@RussellSmith MAN, I wish I could tell you !! But here is my story... I am NOT a computer Tech, and I have always hated Microsoft when it came to security until like March or April of this year. It was January of this year that a friend of mine, went off on me about how great Windows Defender had become, it was then that I started doing research on the matter by watching RUclips videos and reading the Microsoft web pages concerning security. I ran into one page on the Microsoft website that spoke of the Group Policy settings for Windows Defender Antivirus/Firewall, and I am one who has NEVER been afraid to mess with the settings of Windows 10! At that time I became frustrated that there were parts of the Windows 10 Security center that I could NOT access or change, I was the administrator and the only person to use this computer, so it really pissed me off that I could not access or change those settings. But, it was right around that time ( February ) that I started going through the group Policy settings for Windows Defender Antivirus/Firewall, and to my surprise, I started to have access to those areas in the Windows Security Center that I had not had access to before, but I can NOT tell you what settings I changed in the group policy settings that caused those changes, but I know for a fact that it was the Group policy changes that I made that caused those changes in the Widows Security Center. I know that because I still do not have access to the section of the Windows Security Center that has to do with cloud protection and Sample Submission, but that is one section that I do know how to change in the Group Policy settings. How I can change that is by going to Group Policy settings and change the level of Sample Submission to Microsoft, there is like four or five settings for Sample Submission that can be changed, setting the group policy setting for Sample Submission to "FULL Submission" will allow you full access to Cloud Protection and Sample Submission in the Windows Security Center, but that is NOT the setting that I choose for Sample Submission, I choose SAFE SUBMISSION, which means that Microsoft gets NONE of my personal information, but by having that setting, I do NOT have access to Cloud Protection or Sample Submission in the Windows Security Center, but Cloud Protection and Sample Submission are turned on, on my computer, I just can't change those settings in the Windows Security Center unless I change the Sample Submission setting in Group Policy to FULL SUBMISSION !! NO THANKS, NOT GONNA ALLOW THAT !! That's my story, sorry that I can't be of more help in this case, other than to say.... Don't be AFRAID to mess with the Group Policy Settings in Windows 10, it WILL help in this case!

    • @RussellSmith
      @RussellSmith  2 года назад

      Thanks for the reply! Ok, I understand. One thing to remember is that users on Windows 10 Home don't have access to Group Policy.
