Yes. He says that in his video, which you would know if you'd seen it or if Amanda didn't come on camera just to misrepresent him and spread lies. I'm really confused on why she made this video and why she either lies about it or didn't watch all of it and just decided to make a video and milk someone else's content
@@RedButterfly331the video literally has conspiracy in the title. when he talks about it he frames it as such a scary and shocking revelation when everyone else already knew about it because we are real people and not out-of-touch online figures. Can’t believe shane Dawson still has dick riders like you. Yes he admits that it isn’t even a conspiracy, so why is it in a conspiracy video?
@@RedButterfly331 Ok but even if he disclaims it, the video is literally titled as a Conspiracy video and he's wearing a food scanbar on his head. I think it's a bit disingenuous to say that it obviously wasn't a conspiracy video when that's how it's being presented when you first look at it. The brand vs generic brand topic literally takes up half the video, what's the point of calling the video a conspiracy if it's not a conspiracy???? It just seems a bit click-baity at the least, all things considered.
You don't even have had to grow up broke to be familiar with buying generic brands. I grew up firmly middle class and my mom pretty much never bought anything name brand. Everyone knows that 90% of the time, it's the exact same product, just without the marketing.
I found it especially hilarious that he spent an actual chunk of time pretending to be into makeup and he's now acting like he doesn't know what private labeling is.
I was poor too and I thought my parents were always saying the generic brand was the same thing as name brand, just to get me to shut up about getting the more expensive kind... After I moved out I literally tested it out bc I barely had money but I would have rather spent an extra dollar on the name brand if it was better and ...most of the things I tried literally were better when they were name brand. Could have been the placebo affect but for example, the cinnamon toast crunch generic has barely ANY flecks of cinnamon compared to the name brand- and I find that the case throughout what I've tested- name brand stuff has more flavor and usually better structure (that REALLY shows in microwavable meals-the cheaper the microwave meal- the more fake the meat is and you can really tell because a $1 chicken microwave meal, the meat is barely chewable and the texture is like weird spongy blobs, but if I splurge on the $4 one, it's actually like a 4.5/10 edible because you can bite through the chicken and it actually has a texture of real chicken)
@Aja K I think it definitely depends on the product. A lot of things generic is perfectly good. I think it also depends on the person and their tastes as well. I can't stand generic mayonnaise for example.
I saw Jarvis covering his comeback video and it made me genuinely convinced Shane has almost never been shopping at a typical shop for himself in his adult life.
I WAS SO CONFUSED at him not knowing what generic brands were, like bro you literally talked about how poor you were you were ABSOLUTELY buying the generic cereal in the bags!
Fun fact: the bagged cereal malt-o-meal (main brand I see at walmart) was bought out by Post in 2015, so it’s literally the same stuff now. I would have loved that growing up because there was definitely a taste difference before
Either this is the first time he's ever been inside a grocery store in his whole life ooor he's very aware that the only people who still watch his videos are itty bitty babies. Either way, it's embarrassing.
@SavedPdfthat’s an interesting viewpoint, but i think it’s safe to say that shane does not intentionally market his content towards kids that young, and never has. his audience is teens and millennials who are already aware of this phenomenon.
I don't think he's lying about being poor, like you I think he's lying about somehow not having this basic knowledge, but your comment reminded me of people I know who claimed to grow up poor but absolutely did not. There's one guy I knew in high school who used to tell people he grew up in a rough neighborhood in Oakland. The truth is he grew up in the wealthiest suburb of Oakland. The wealthiest one. It's like Bel-Air. And our high school was a private school. It was 15 grand a year 20 YEARS AGO. Now it's probably closer to 20 grand. I know multiple people who do this. I guess they don't want people to think they're bad people because their parents had money or something, I don't know. It's super weird, honestly. I have run into several people who do legitimately seem to believe that all people who grew up with money or have money now are bad people, but those people are naive zealots and largely not too bright so I don't know why they're worried about them. It's just a weird thing I see people doing
the immediate "my video isn't getting love from the algorithm" really got to me like oh?? can baby shane not handle his low quality content finally getting the fewer views it deserves :( oh that must be so hard to not be rewarded for the bare minimum :(
@@schoo9256 There is an argument that most (if not all) extreme success or failure in the modern world is like this. I’m not sure anyone really ‘earns’ or deserves illness or mental health difficulties, just as nobody can possibly work hard enough to justify ‘earning’ billions… particularly when their employees aren’t being paid fairly for their work. Edit: Lucky for Shane, he lacks the self-awareness to fully grasp the situation.
I grew up watching Shane Dawson's early content and stopped when he switched to podcasts, so when his cancellation came I was so shocked because I assumed everyone already knew about all his old shock content and Shanaynay
I was shocked because I thought he had apologized or addressed his old content, not realizing he just adopted a different persona and hoped people would forget lol
I as well grew up watching his old content and knew he has said sorry for that behavior. So I thought it was behind us. Then I met him, Ryland, Garrett and Andrew in Vegas as I was working and he was so sweet!!! Then came the big cancellation and I watched it and tried to understand it. When I realized omg he hasn't learned or grown at all from a young age I was done. You can't be ok with child porn and just treating everyone openly like trash! It's sad but I watch Morgan's vlogs and they're really good but I don't watch if Shane is in them. She rarely posts with him in them anymore. I think because most of her audience is there for her not him
I remember and watched some of Shane's old content but I was still shocked when details of the controversy because I was extremely young at the time I watched it and didn't really realize how messed up those things were. Also I completely forgot about it. I assume a lot of his fan base was also young or just didn't care. Now that I'm older I see the issue
When I first heard of Shane Dawson he was in his "eating everything at Baskin Robbins" era so I'd never seen or heard of or seen all of the horrific things he'd said and done in the past. I'm pretty some of the content was still up, but it never got recommended nor was it talked about by a lot of people. I think the whole cat saga was the first time I'd heard of any of the horrible shit he'd said.
The "accountability," aspect was a teeny tiny part of why Jenna left. It was good fodder for commentary channels, so that's what got talked about a lot. But the reality was not really about that. She had been needing to leave for herself for a long time prior to the relatively tiny amounts of criticism she was receiving for ancient history. Jenna grew up a long time ago.
I so agree with this. I remember thinking that she didn't seem interested in making videos anymore based on her uploads in the months leading up to her departure.
@trashbasket My point was NOT that she has never done anything wrong. You're right that we shouldn't willfully ignore bad behaviour from someone we like. I do believe in judging people based on their present, and she is widely considered to have taken accountability in an acceptable manner. However, my point was more about the comparison re: leaving being a bit of a bad fit given the circumstances.
OMG thank you. I see people referencing her "getting canceled" all the time but she was already on her way out and wanted to address her past before she did. There is so much more to her leaving than people think.
Jenna almost one hundred percent left because she was tired of youtube, She was over it, at one point she just filmed a video of herself sleeping on the couch with her dogs. She didn't want to make content anymore and that's that. Anyone who still claims anything else is delusional.
I kinda cringe when someone says the algorithm isn’t giving their video any love… but it’s *aggressively* being recommended to me and I’m just not into it. If it’s someone I like I feel bad, but sometimes it just happens
I also hate that they act like the algorithm is sentient. It's just a pet peeve but it's very annoying. The algorithm can't show you love, it doesn't know how to love 😭
@@crazyowlgirlcncowner But if we teach the algorithm it can change.✨ I'm sorry the last line in your comment with the cry face made me laugh so much. Thanks.
@@anahnnemus5187 You're right, we can change the algorithm. If we let it trauma dump and verbally abuse us enough I'm sure it'll learn to say "I love you." 😞💔 I believe in you, algorithm. 🥺 JAJAJAJAJA but I'm glad it made you laugh
ive seen people do the same shit w being shadowbanned, ive seen someone w 300 followers say not to spam like their post bc they keep getting shadowbanned and no attention on their posts. like bestie... u just have 300 followers on instagram approximately 8 of those are real people
So I used to work for Frito-Lay. The one advantage they had is freshness. Yeah, all potato / corn chips are basically the same. But there used to be a goal to go from the factory to the shelf in 24 hours. A smaller company might take several days to get onto store shelves. But yeah the ingredients are basically the same and it's all about freshness.
This video also has the feel of ‘gotta crank this out, daddy needs a new pair of shoes!’ Either they are far more broke than they act like or he just really really REALLY craves the attention. This is only news to 12 year olds who don’t buy anything and rich people.
I was hoping someone would say this! I hope she corrects that. It 100% was not even remotely similar to the Jenna marbles situation. Comparing it to that is absurd.
@Gateaux Q I actually think he is genuinely shocked by private labeling and generic brand food. He feels scammed that his expensive pistachios weren't somehow better than the cheaper ones lmao
As much as I despise hearing about him, when you look at his channel and certain echo chambers of the internet he’s literally treated like he’s some kind of god. I’m glad people like Amanda are still talking about him in this way because he really shouldn’t be allowed to still be doing this all without any form of pushback. Doesn’t help his actual content is rubbish as well
The most bizarre thing about this is that Shane seems to be calling out the stores that are selling stuff cheaply as scammers... not the ones that are selling the same product with a logo slapped on it at a huge mark-up? e.g. he has a $30 mug that's his favourite (and as a British person I can fully relate - it's totally okay to have a favourite mug), and he's angry that he could've bought the same mug for $5. It's like he imagined that the $30 mug was six times better than the $5 mug, even though that's basically impossible. I don't know, it seems like such a strange angle, especially from someone who both claims to have grown up poor AND has had involvement with very expensive brands. I just can't believe that he's never encountered mark-up before.
It’s because Shane is rich and despite playing poor today and actually being poor in the past he’s dosnt like the idea of him and other “poor” people owning and buying the same things as him
You should be able to look at the price tag alone and know it's a scam. No mug should be $30 lol. You can get mugs that change the artwork with heat for less than $20.
I think it reallys says something about you as a creator if the reactions to your content are doing better than your actual video and people are purposely choosing to watch those reactions over the original
Shane Dawson is trying to appeal to a new wave of tweens / teens who didn't grow up with him, and it really shows here. Also, thank you for stating that you're not supporting him or Jefferson Starship lol
Thinking about it, he reminds me of my brother. We grew up poor, but my brother was somewhat delusional and demanding. I wouldn't have enough money for new shoes, but my brother would demand that he be given money for stuff like school lunches, money to hang out with friends. And my mom gave it to him, which only made us poorer.
Wait til Shane finds out that they sell designer clothes for less with a different label or brand name. 🙄 I can just hear him saying, "OH MY GOD, GUCCI FLIP FLIP FLOPS WITHOUT THE GUCCI!"
i think its better bc who wants a generic shirt with a giant ugly brand logo slapped onto it for MORE money than nessesary. just buy a shirt that looks the same without it.
Shane Dawson is essentially that kid at the sleepover who smells like skid marks, makes everyone uncomfortable, and then freaks themselves out over everything, and needs to have their parents called.
this is when i once again thank amanda for doing the things i cannot emotionally/monetarily afford to do bc her takes are way more entertaining than me giving up an hour of my life for shane's ralph's reviews era
The thing that's so wild about Jeffree Star to me is that if you were a scene kid, you already knew he was a creep and to stay away. Seeing people defend him when I was hearing people talk about Jeffree Star hitting on super young people at shows when I was maybe 14 is just wild. How did this guy manage to sweep an open secret like that under the rug?
I remember when his other conspiracy videos came out people acted like they were amazing pieces on content when they were him screaming over generally known things.
I am thoroughly convinced that Shane Dawson wasn't really poor, and he only says he was so he can get people to feel sorry for him. Cause how else would you explain why he's so shocked about generic brands? The comments section to iNabber's video on this has helped convince me.
Shane: “If all of this disgusting behavior I’ve had in the past means I’ll lose my platform, so be it” Also Shane: “Why is RUclips not recommending my videooooooo?”
Nick DRamio's Clip Breakdowns are also good for Shane's content because it also made me realize how flagrantly Shane uses other people's content without proper attribution. I'm unsure if he did it in this video but honestly I wouldn't be surprised
he did apparently link back to the clips he borrowed but the AMOUNT of this video that was just needless clips was wild. He says a brand name thing then plays like 3 clips of commercials and other youtubers saying just the name and it's clearly just to extend the video length.
@@notshardain Yep. He did the same in his haunting videos too. I think it's a matter of putting creator names in the clips because (at least in the ghost videos) there were so many clips that the list was insanely long to click through
Yes I love his Shane videos. There is one that he goes on a rant about misophonia for way too long and as an autistic it gets pretty ableist for no reason. We can criticize Shane without throwing others under the bus. ❤
Did he ever credit Swell for her video content in the TanaCon doc? UPDATE: He has still not credited Swell- it’s been four years and it still says “links coming soon!”
@@chrisd322 shane used footage from Swell’s tanacon video for his tanacon series but never credited her for using that content. If you look that the video right now it still says “links coming soon”
Shane: "Grocery stores don't play music!" Me: unable to listen to Christmas music anymore because of the time that i worked at a Trader Joes during holiday season
Grocery stores don't try to block cell service...they LITERALLY have apps where they want you to add coupons and ad items, and then some chains even tell you what aisle to go to for items on your shopping list.
I _have_ noticed some stores that have free WiFi will block or throttle/slow access to their competitors' websites/apps over their WiFi to make it harder to comparison shop. It's obnoxious especially when paired with the crummy cell service. It's far simpler from a technical standpoint (blacklist web addresses via the router, same as your office internet blocking Cookie Clicker or pr0n) than manually blocking all cell service over an acre...
I had said on his video that it's like an hour long version of: Kid: "I want doritos, not fake doritos!" Parent: "it's the same thing. Just put it in the basket."
I remember in middle school, my FCS teacher made us do a taste test on foods and choose which one was the name bran and which was the generic. We all did horribly. It’s also when we learned that a lot of stores get their products from the same manufacturers so there really isn’t a difference. To put it in less words, he’s now discovering what middle schoolers know.
I've worked in a food manufacturing plant. Several of my family members still do. Technically some of the generic brands do have slightly lower standards on things but since they're usually run on the same line, it's not like they intentionally make them inferior. It would cost more to intentionally switch things over to make garbage.
Grocery store conspiracy videos always crack me up because I used to work in a grocery store and nothing these people are trying to expose even seems weird to me. You're totally right about why cell reception is worse at the back of the store. of course the are going to prioritize keeping food fresh over good cell service.
On the thing about Target not playing music: All three of the targets in my area do play music throughout the store and sometimes they have themed playlists for special occasions like BHM and WHM which is pretty cool. I remember walking around the men's clothing section and hearing out of nowhere an old barbershop-y song with a man hauntingly singing about his struggles in life. The song went on for like eight minutes and was followed by either a jazz song or something more current. Very strange.
definitely gives off “i was around actual rich ass families so i think well off upper middle class is dirt poor because i didn’t get the new iphone in 3 colours” type shit
The lack of cell reception being jammers is the funniest thing i've ever heard someone theorize. Like when people go into costco or walmart or whatever, you expect there to be areas where there's no service. Like you can't get the living room wifi anywhere else in my 700 sq ft house due to the concrete wall surrounding it (it used to be a garage), so yes i expect the concrete/cement walls of large shopping centers to have no signal in some places as well. That's just a thing buildings be doing sometimes.
i'm definitely not a fan of shane at this point in time, but I remember being a teenager and binge watching his videos with my friends, and I think that's why the white label "conspiracy" seems childish and naive. I'm sure he's well aware of his audience demographics and at this point is just trying to cater to the people that are most likely to still be watching him. Just my two cents but thank you for your service as always
Another thing to keep in mind, many of the larger supermarket brands have deals with brand name grocery producers where they will carry that brand in their stores but the brand needs to produce X amount of their product for that stores store brand. So in some cases you might literally be getting the exact same product as the brand name, just dumped into a different bag.
Used to work improving cell coverage inside buildings, tunnels and underground. Metal and concrete block most of the higher frequencies of cell communication. The larger the building the worse it is. It’s expensive to add cell coverage in buildings. Generally easier and cheaper to provide wifi instead and as a bonus employees get to use it for an internal network.
11:20 Those of you who are avoiding Shane’s videos like myself, Safiya and Tyler did a video on big box stores like a year ago and it was pretty informative.
it's a really small example, but i like to buy taylor swift merch from small businesses that recreate things that either sold out quickly, are no longer in production, or are just poor quality from her store. the replicas are often cheaper, the few that aren't cheaper than it was retail are things like the snowglobes, but i find those to be worth it so i can complete my collection. and, yeah, they're not ~official~ but i really don't care.
I've taken a class called environmental psychology back on school. These large stores (target walmart) are absolutely laying out the store to maximize time spent inside. It's why the milk and eggs are usually found at the back, those are very common items, thus they are placed in an area far from the entrance. It's not a conspiracy it's an intentional design choice.
I had full service in the middle of the Sahara with my normal SIM card. Can I consistently connect to cell from my bedroom in the back of the house? Absolutely not! 😂 He’s acting like he just got his first cell phone.
one of the weirdest things about being such a longtime youtuber is seeing how channels that were starting out the same time as me either fizzle out, or totally change direction as if they werent making horrible, clickbait, prank, blackface, homophobic, etc content from the beginning...shane dawson, colleen balanger, many others I could name who claim to show remorse, but a lot of time they havent even taken down the old videos that they claim to feel remorse over? not all oldbies, some have changed a lot more gracefully (and some have legitimately apologized AND stopped making ad revenue off their disreputable old videos...)
I grew up lower middle class and was totally shocked by white labeling. We always got the cheaper store brand and I just imagined it was made at the Walmart factory or whatever.
Shane Dawson isn't funny. Period. Never has been and never will be. He squandered his moment in the sun, and now he's trying to somehow prove to what's left of his fanbase as to how relavent he is. He is not. Nor is his partner. Neither are relatable, especially as they continue to coquettishly flex their wealth and "popularity". I just ignore him and all things peripheral to him.
I work at a Telecom/ISP company and got a bit alarmed when you were about to talk about your provider. Where I work, if we know the first and last (legal) name of the person, we can look up their address, if they have internet with us we can look up all devices that have ever connected to the modem, find their phone number/email... Glad you didn't say it in the end 😅
He has to make videos of these “conspiracies” because kids like it and pretty much all real conspiracies somehow manage to come from or be heavily tied to racism, antisemitism, and fascists
Shane slowly but steadily turns into stereotypical suburban wine mom, completely out of touch with the real world, with too much time and no personality to fill the void of this time so they entertain themselves with "conspiracies", all we need now is him joining some MLM...
I grew up privileged so we never got generic brands and it wasnt until I took a marketing class freshman year of high school that I learned about them. Even then I was just like "Oh, that makes sense." I didn't think it was this whole conspiracy or "scam" of companies selling "fake food", whatever the hell that means lol
Yeah, I get the impression he's taking advantage of his young viewers by talking about the generic food thing. As you mentioned, some people don't realize about generic food until they start shopping for themselves as late Teens/20s. He clearly was hedging that his audience wouldn't know about this. There's no way he didn't know about this
Kind of random but you talking about cell service reminded me. When I was in grades 7-10th, there was one classroom that had no signal. No internet, no phone signal. None. Outside the door it was fine and in the rooms next to that classroom but it was a running joke that the teacher ( that was about strict and.. tbh rude) had placed cell phone blockers into the room cause she hated kids on their phones so much lmao
IT guy here. Your guess about the construction of the building blocking the signal is the most likely culprit. I’ve been inside many large buildings that blocked by phone’s signal and provided wifi as an option. My college being one of them.
Like some off-brand items I def don't think they are comparable to the brand name they are emulating. But there's plenty of off-brand items that are great! Food Theory talked about this but a lot of professional chefs prefer off brand because it's cheaper especially for kitchen staples as they are heavily regulated so basically brand name and off brand are basically the same (flour, sugar, salt, etc.) I think he said the one of the things chefs don't go off brand on is dairy products because quality of milk and it actually being ice cream instead of "frozen dessert" affects the flavor heavily (so they prefer to spend money on really good yogurt, cheese, and ice cream haha). It's not a grand conspiracy....like he's trying to be relatable but can't understand he literally sounds like an out of touch rich boomer. "How much can a banana cost? $10?" All middle class to poor people know about generics and buy them. As well as duplicates or copies of stuff. Like most of us aren't trying to pretend they are the brand item....lol. People just like the aesthetic but can't afford the big brand name.
Growing up poor in Orange County suburbs makes shit so much worse. I was homeless for a few months when I was 15-16, my whole family were individually couch hopping at different houses and no one wanted me longer than a week at a time so I was constantly having to stay other places and slept on the street one night. All the while I'm still in high school, surrounded by yuppies who thought what I was doing was some kind of act, like students and faculty legit thought I was seeking attention or something when it was brought up that I was homeless. This was in Lake Forest BTW, I know Tustin has better areas and worse areas, but the way you described it, I always assumed you grew up closer to Irvine than Santa Ana. Also this was 2001 so long before social media, I'm totally fine now, to me it's just another crazy ass story I have, lol
Places like grocery stores are built with a lot of metal. Just being in college, I'd lose service in most of their auditoriums... This is hilarious. Shane is like an alien.
I grew up to a comfortably upper middle class family and we still only got the store brand stuff. It's...I don't want to say "everyone knew they were knockoffs of the real stuff and more or less the same thing but cheaper" because that fact is just so painfully obvious it doesn't need to be explained.
As someone who worked in target yes they play music and yes I was still time unoriented. Missed most of my breaks on a good day because I couldn’t feel the passing of time. I’d only realized after i heard the same sia song for the 3rd time
Good he's talking about the Internet in supermarkets, hope he makes the connection with subways because in my city I don't always have a great connection in the metro between stations and obviously they are in cohoots: big metro and big supermarket trying to get us.
The cell phone one is so frustrating as someone who has taken physics 2. Buildings like grocery stores tend to have poor cell reception because they act as a faraday cage. The store isn't purposely trying to block cell service. I rarely have good cell service inside buildings on my college campus. It isn't some conspiracy to force us to use their wifi, it's simply just the laws of physics at work. A simple google search would automatically debunk their conspiracy, hence why they never do so.
a few things: 1. I don’t think shane dawson has ever grocery shopped regularly. men tend to not have to buy their own groceries bc yknow why would he do that when he was living with his mom etc. by the time he had money he had enough to buy name brand stuff etc so I wouldn’t be shocked if he never put any sort of critical thought into what he was buying and seeing on shelves. 2. I don’t think shane dawson knows what a conspiracy theory even is anymore. white labeling and ghost kitchens are not a “conspiracy”. that’s not what that is 😭 i think he was able to do surface level conspiracies for so long that he doesn’t know how to research anything except for generic “scandalous” things and slap the word conspiracy on it
I've definitely heard music at my local Target, but not at Aldi. Aldi is a bare bones store that saves costs for the customer by cutting their overhead. They don't have frills like in-store music, bagging service, cart service, or neatly arranged unboxed products on the shelves. They pay decent-not-great wages for a skeleton crew of equals to run the store with everyone responsible for everything that makes it run, and then they contract groundskeeping. All this reduction of labor means lower prices for the customer, and like you said, it's just a market strategy (it works!), not a conspiracy.
This cannot be someone who grew up poor. My parents were coming out of that by the time I was old enough to remember. But we were shopping generic and bulk items. I still have this mindset and will only buy "fancy" items on sale. He has clearly never shopped for himself on a budget
The whole "no cell service" thing is a very well known concept. Buildings constructed like grocery stores act as Faraday cages. It's why service is bad in tons of concrete buildings with extensive rebar
Growing up lower middle class, I didn't learn the brand names for medicine because I would always just look for the generic brand which usually uses the scientific name. My partner grew up upper middle class and his mind was blown when I taught him to check the dosage and active ingredients for meds and then buy the generic version. He loves the savings haha
wait but same. i could literally have made the same video as shane in like 2012 but it would have been me learning ibuprofen was the same thing as advil and there were people paying twice the price for the same thing. i was like you all aren't joking you're really out here buying ADVIL?
same i literally didn't know that ibuprofen and advil were the same thing. a doctor one time asked if i had taken advil and i said no, only to realize it's the same thing when she handed me the bottle of advil that read ibuprofen lol
Refrigerators act as giant Faraday cages, so it's expected that you'll get worse reception. It's a shame Shane will never know the fun of having to get a bottle of Dr. Thunder and Costco pizza for a small birthday party where you could only invite one of your friends. Or butter sandwiches.
Target team member here! I believe Target is finally rolling out music with remodels. At least my store has. The only place that doesn't have music is the backroom, and as someone who is mostly in the back, I am very much alone with my thoughts so I put one earbud in to not be with my thoughts. On the internet thing, yea it's the size of the building, I get no service in the backroom at all. Even our zebras will glitch out from time to time because of it. Always connect to the internet to not have this sort of issue, I know target has pretty decent internet. Shane is just being dramatic for attention.
as someone who's worked in grocery stores and department stores...uh duh doy! YEAH, of fucking course there's no reception or clocks in big stores like this. when you get into a busy building full of people, you're gonna have to share cell service with all those people (who might have more than one phone/tablet) AND all of the computers in registers and shit. also, when you think about it, it's gonna be kinda hard to put clocks in a large building when you already have to worry about merchandising and theming. I know Kroger has clocks, but they're not everywhere bc these stores are open plan.
i get the feeling he's trying to restart his massive 'shane dawson documentary' thing that used to get him so many views, but no one wants to work with him because he's too radioactive, so he's applying the same formula to the most baseline 'conspiracy theories' he can scramble together himself by faking hysteria about nothing to try and get views back rolling in with minimal effort
this has nothing to do with shane dawson but former target team member here. targets do play music! it's the layout of the store that convinces people to stay longer. some stores don't have music yet because they don't have the proper speakers for it. love your stuff!!
i did a lot of work in grocery for a while, and honestly shanes entire video was embarrassing from a workers perspective. he should be less focussed on grocery stores and more of what retail stores like target are doing (which seem to engage in behaviours that hes fawning over, like amanda mentioned with the lack of music and the lack of cell service to push people to use targets wifi networks). all it does it make him seem out of touch with his audience and desperate to stay relevant
I watch videos like amandas cause when I was younger I did like him for a bit but then watching these commentary videos made me realize why he's problematic and how enough hasn't been done in response.
12:10 Yup. Cellphones often don't work well work in places built out of metal and concrete, especially reinforced concrete, such as schools, high rise buildings, and (shocker!) grocery stores
He didn’t grow up poor he literally lived in the nicest county of Southern California. He grew up white lower middle class, SO MUCH better than most of the people in east Los Angeles
Honestly, it's really tone deaf. We already think he is racist, and now he is basically gaslighting us to buy more expensive products. Sounds like he still hasn't figured out how to be a good human. Yet, is still trying to make money on his racist, and privileged content.
I know nothing about shane dawson and don’t take what i say as anything other than speculation but i know that there are kids who grew up POOR and there are kids who THINK they grew up poor but actually grew up middle class and just had parents who didn’t want to spend money on things like new video game consoles or fancy junk food snacks.
Target does have music. One time I was walking to the beat subconsciously and a worker commented because she thought it was cute! I think it honestly makes me spend more because I don’t get bored.
Shane is the king of over reactions. Remember when he started bawling his eyes out in the Jeffrey series when he found out how much he would be paid from the t shirts? His whole content is just him going “OH MY GOD 😮”
When the video started I thought it was going to be about greenwashing and health washing in food, and how words like ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ are very poorly regulated in the food industry, since the Trader Joes animal crackers labeled organic when they are just white labelled regular animals crackers. But nope: just a man who just discovered generic store brands.
The biggest problem for me is that it’s not a conspiracy. It’s not even a well kept secret. Its just a thing that exists
@@RedButterfly331 It’s okay, you’re safe here. You can stop licking the gross man’s boot.
@@RedButterfly331 bro how was someone out here still defending shane in 2023 💀
You don't even have had to grow up broke to be familiar with buying generic brands. I grew up firmly middle class and my mom pretty much never bought anything name brand. Everyone knows that 90% of the time, it's the exact same product, just without the marketing.
Middle class stayed middle class by buying store brands.
Same!
I saw Jarvis covering his comeback video and it made me genuinely convinced Shane has almost never been shopping at a typical shop for himself in his adult life.
iirc he got famous pretty young, so he's probably had other ppl to shop for him lol
It made me think Shane is an idiot.
Years of wearing literal trash with holes, soaked in grease... I believe you
he's clearly acting. I think he knows all this stuff and is clearly pretending to be shocked. Similar to kids' tv hosts.
Dude literally bought animal crackers through Amazon. I think you're 200% right lmao
I WAS SO CONFUSED at him not knowing what generic brands were, like bro you literally talked about how poor you were you were ABSOLUTELY buying the generic cereal in the bags!
Omg one of my faves commenting on another one of my faves’ videos!
It's just a weird thing I see people doing
this video could also be named "i watched shane dawson so you don't have to"
Nobody has to watch Shane Dawson
Could also call it "I watched Shane Dawson and should be given a medal for it"
the immediate "my video isn't getting love from the algorithm" really got to me like oh?? can baby shane not handle his low quality content finally getting the fewer views it deserves :( oh that must be so hard to not be rewarded for the bare minimum :(
Or suddenly realising that his whole success was a random win on the algorithm roulette wheel, and not a reflection of merit
@Toby that'd destroy me honestly

SAMEEE i remember when he was at his peak, i was so confused, bc twitter loved him, and twt is like the capital of woke culture
Jenna could shoot someone's dog and people would be like nooo she's perfect it's okay 😂

Shane Dawson made his apology video in panic to try and quell people bringing up awful things he was doing and did
This video also has the feel of ‘gotta crank this out, daddy needs a new pair of shoes!’ Either they are far more broke than they act like or he just really really REALLY craves the attention.

Doesn’t help his actual content is rubbish as well
he's been mooching off ryland's channel, it's a symbiotic relationship where ryland gets views and shane gets a fanbase without as much scrutiny
Yeah this is a good point, why isn’t he framing the expensive because of a label product as the scam?
It’s because Shane is rich and despite playing poor today and actually being poor in the past he’s dosnt like the idea of him and other “poor” people owning and buying the same things as him
You should be able to look at the price tag alone and know it's a scam. No mug should be $30 lol. You can get mugs that change the artwork with heat for less than $20.

Thinking about it, he reminds me of my brother. We grew up poor, but my brother was somewhat delusional and demanding. Shane: "Grocery stores don't play music!"
Me: unable to listen to Christmas music anymore because of the time that i worked at a Trader Joes during holiday season
It's weird though. My phone would never have service UNTIL these stores made apps
I had said on his video that it's like an hour long version of:
Kid: "I want doritos, not fake doritos!"
Parent: "it's the same thing. Just put it in the basket."
I remember in middle school, my FCS teacher made us do a taste test on foods and choose which one was the name bran and which was the generic. We all did horribly. It’s also when we learned that a lot of stores get their products from the same manufacturers so there really isn’t a difference.
To put it in less words, he’s now discovering what middle schoolers know.
the only reason shane videos exist nowadays are to be made into more watchable and enjoyable content by nick diramio
Very strange.
same at my target, its always kinda strange
Same! Sometimes I wish my Target wouldn’t play music, it sounds like our Target plays a repeating playlist consisting of five songs 🥲
As someone who grew up poor I don't believe for a moment that Shane did. He's a liar and a cheat and he was using that for clout when it suited him.
I agree. And I also think the thing with the nasty, ratty tshirts is too weird to be anything other than cosplaying poor. I don't think he ever was.
I think he grew up thinking he was poor. That doesn't mean he really was.
Being poor also doesn’t necessarily mean you wear dirty stinky ripped shirts, as if those people don’t have a brain or any sense of pride ??
definitely gives off “i was around actual rich ass families so i think well off upper middle class is dirt poor because i didn’t get the new iphone in 3 colours” type shit
I am constantly perplexed by this mans persisting existence on youtube
Ohhh tay tays gonna write a hell of angry tune about that! I like that you're being a rebel. 😌😂
😂 He’s acting like he just got his first cell phone.
his act of behaving “cute” and “unaware” to be relatable is a serious turn off for the average viewer. Such cringe.
one of the weirdest things about being such a longtime youtuber is seeing how channels that were starting out the same time as me either fizzle out, or totally change direction as if they werent making horrible, clickbait, prank, blackface, homophobic, etc content from the beginning...shane dawson, colleen balanger, many others I could name who claim to show remorse, but a lot of time they havent even taken down the old videos that they claim to feel remorse over? not all oldbies, some have changed a lot more gracefully (and some have legitimately apologized AND stopped making ad revenue off their disreputable old videos...)
I grew up lower middle class and was totally shocked by white labeling. We always got the cheaper store brand and I just imagined it was made at the Walmart factory or whatever.

I grew up privileged so we never got generic brands and it wasnt until I took a marketing class freshman year of high school that I learned about them. Can you imagine the jumpscare i had opening this video up to watch on my break at Aldi to see Aldi looming behind Amanda staring back at me
Yeah, I get the impression he's taking advantage of his young viewers by talking about the generic food thing. As you mentioned, some people don't realize about generic food until they start shopping for themselves as late Teens/20s. He clearly was hedging that his audience wouldn't know about this. There's no way he didn't know about this
Truly wish Shane Dawson would learn how to edit a video for any sort of coherence or conciseness at some point in his life, jfc
Generic brands a lot of times also have “Compare to [name brand]” so the brands aren’t even hiding it either
As an Aussie I've heard "you're listening to Coles Radio" far too often. They absolutely play music in grocery stores here lmao
I used to stack shelves at Coles, if I never hear that again it will be far too soon. Thanks for the flashbacks 😂
I’d only realized after i heard the same sia song for the 3rd time
Shane wasn't poor. He just couldn't afford every single thing he wanted. He was upper middle class 'broke.'
A simple google search would automatically debunk their conspiracy, hence why they never do so.
a few things:
2. I don’t think shane dawson knows what a conspiracy theory even is anymore. white labeling and ghost kitchens are not a “conspiracy”. that’s not what that is 😭 i think he was able to do surface level conspiracies for so long that he doesn’t know how to research anything except for generic “scandalous” things and slap the word conspiracy on it
jarvis has a great video on this as well!! :D excited to see ur take on it
That's where I had watched the stupid conspiracy thing from. I was trying to remember! Jarvis's video was indeed good
I've definitely heard music at my local Target, but not at Aldi.
Fun fact: girls scouts get around 85 cents per box but if you a junior or above you can choose to not get a prize and get an extra 15 cents a box:)
We're all confused about Shane's everything.
I still don't know the brand names tbh
I was raised by a nurse so I learned both names but we bought generic.
wait but same. i could literally have made the same video as shane in like 2012 but it would have been me learning ibuprofen was the same thing as advil and there were people paying twice the price for the same thing. i was like you all aren't joking you're really out here buying ADVIL?
same i literally didn't know that ibuprofen and advil were the same thing. a doctor one time asked if i had taken advil and i said no, only to realize it's the same thing when she handed me the bottle of advil that read ibuprofen lol
@@lorielovesbooks7315 same and now i’m a vet tech, teaching everyone i love to do the same.
You and Jarvis are truly some of the strongest warriors to go through Shane's content for research purposes.
That Bye Sister thing of like 5 years ago radiates Mean Girls energy
this has nothing to do with shane dawson but former target team member here. targets do play music! it's the layout of the store that convinces people to stay longer. some stores don't have music yet because they don't have the proper speakers for it. love your stuff!!
i did a lot of work in grocery for a while, and honestly shanes entire video was embarrassing from a workers perspective. he should be less focussed on grocery stores and more of what retail stores like target are doing (which seem to engage in behaviours that hes fawning over, like amanda mentioned with the lack of music and the lack of cell service to push people to use targets wifi networks). all it does it make him seem out of touch with his audience and desperate to stay relevant
I forgot about this man, but I'm so interested to see how Swell tackles this subject
He didn’t grow up poor he literally lived in the nicest county of Southern California. He grew up white lower middle class, SO MUCH better than most of the people in east Los Angeles
THANK YOU. It’s about time we call out his “I grew up poor” shtick
how do i block shane dawson irl
Honestly, it's really tone deaf. We already think he is racist, and now he is basically gaslighting us to buy more expensive products. Sounds like he still hasn't figured out how to be a good human. Yet, is still trying to make money on his racist, and privileged content.
The wealthy man... literally in a recession right now!
I think it honestly makes me spend more because I don’t get bored.
i'm at the point where i watch all of ur videos even if i don't care about the topic because i always agree with ur opinions lmaooo
Here's another conspiracy: Trader Joe's is actually Aldi but it's not the same Aldi as the other one
