==============================================
This week I'm answering a request for the slap riff from the song Can't Stop by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This riff by Flea is fairly straightforward as long as you've got a good grasp of playing ghost notes.
Ghost Notes are those little dead notes you hear in funky riffs that sound useless on their own but they loads of momentum to the groove when applied to a line.
If you want to learn more about Slapping just check out the Simple Steps To Slap Bass course over at Talkingbass.net. I cover everything from the absolute basics all the way through to advanced techniques like Double Thumping: bit.ly/2qjhWLV

Same
Same
This is the correct version I’m pretty sure
You'll find that with most songs. I just learned Cake's cover of "I will survive" 3 different ways!
Flea is a very very good bass player.
Damn. Is he?
Ofcourse he is
No shit
No doubt about it
Even if he not the best... he surely is a very very good bass player, a very dedicated one too
I've watched a few of these 'Can't Stop' lessons and this is the simplest and most eloquent of them all. Massive well done, you're doing a great job.
You're amazing bassist and am amazed by how well and slowly and clearly you explain. It must take a lot of time and patience. Thank you so much for all these hard works.
Great video, I'gve been struggling with this music for a while, basically trying until i make it. This is quite helpful to improve my playing. The ghost note problem is the same on Dark Necessities
Great lesson Mark! Helped me very much with my ghost notes... Thanks for everything you do
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Great lesson on this song and the ghost notes! Will help me tremendously!🤘🎶
The most comprehensive and detailed tutorial nice job
I love watching your stuff man. Great teacher. I love the way you break it down just a couple notes at a time. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this. Best tutorial on this song out there 🙌
holy shit that tone
Krish Vyas lmao that’s called sounding like a bass guitar
no it's called playing with rubber bands
It's just an Ibanez man.
This is the best tutorial
great lesson, breaks it down into easy manageable chunks - thank you!
Got it all down now :)
Just have to make it smooth and bring up to speed!
Thank you Mark! 🤗
Amazing as always Mark! Thank you so much!
You made it SO easy and simple to learn. thanks so much.
Great bass player and easily understood
Many thanks!!! This video helped me a lot :-)
Greets from Germany
Ok just gotta say in the first part of this lesson I just love ur face grovin on the jam. Jam n teach on brah
Amazing bass lesson.
New sub here.
Helped with those ghost notes in such an easy way ! Wow !
Thanks for the great lesson! That song was impossible before you broke it down.
Thanks soo much for breaking it down it took me 2 weeks to get down the ghost notes but now I can play this comfortably at a slower pace than the original, week 3 I should be able to play in timing :)
You're Awesome Mark. Thank you.
you the one i love in the world for bass
Thank you for the amazing tutorial
thank you for this lesson. very detailed.
Thanks a lot for this lesson!
Great video! Thank you very much!
Thabks very much! Great lesson
Yeahy! love this song!! Please do more RHCP!!!
Good concise and easy to understand lesson Mark.Quite an easy slap line if you've mastered those muting and ghost note techniques, although for beginners and I've been there, you think how on earth can I ever play that. I think you've previously mentioned you would do a similar breakdown for aeroplane by chilli peppers which has similarities to this one. Any chance you'll have some time to do it soon? Cheers
Grunter Bridgman just keep practicing, a month ago I thought I couldn’t do it and now I can, all I need is the ghost notes
Ghost notes are so hard. Its so tough to keep rhythm for me. Probably just because it's new and I have to think about it way too much. I like how Mark pointed out using the fretting hand to make most of those ghost.notes, it's helped a ton but I still get super hung up every time I see one.
@@jamiemcdonald4279 stick with it, eventually you won't have to think about it that much and it will become automatic. Understand the frustration though, we've all been there. 👍
great tutorial. thanks👍👍
you re awesome man
Thank you!! It helps a lot! It's the first song I'm learning on the bass!
@@MossYT thanks for the advice man! I definitely got blisters xD now i can play it! still need to refine it tho
Damn, that's a hell of a song to try learning as your first. Mine was smoke on the water haha, well the guitar part played on bass.anyways.
Good job tks
here in brazil we enjoy listening bass
I can’t get what it is after 5th fret on e string
Love when he say: "Whooops!"
And Pinkeh
Wait so do you use your thumb for the g string too?
Nice bass!
Parabéns pelo seus videos ,são ótimo !!!
best teaching video of Slap Bass
Really helpful thank you. Are you popping some of those notes with a sharp down stroke of your thumb instead of a pinky pull off?
Take this with an ENORMOUS grain of salt, as I am an on and off bass player with beginner experience and am not well versed, but from everything I’ve seen of RHCP videos, and bass players in general, I have never seen anyone use their pinky, and for this song I’m certain you only use a strong down strok of the thumb and then a pull from behind the string with your index finger.
Ты крутой учитель....от простого к сложному...так всё понятно!!))
Спасибо большое!!!)
Will there be a John Myung Lesson?
It's song is this on Dorian mode?
This is a great bass lesson from Gunther from Friends.
didnt know shane mcmahon was a bassist
lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
lol
Huge beginner here, what amp settings can you recomend?
Shimmy Shazmart turn the volume on your bass all the way up. Set your tone control knobs on the bass flat like "12 o'clock". That depends on what type of control knobs you have. Set the gain on your amp between nine and 10 o'clock. Set your treble at about 1 o'clock, high mids at about 1 o'clock, low mids between 11 and 12 o'clock. Set The bass between 12 and 1 o'clock. Control your master volume as desired or needed. That should give you a basic setting for your amp. If you like that tone and decide to join a band and "play out," turn your high mids to about 2 o'clock so that you won't get drowned out in the mix. You can then use the tone control knobs on your instrument to add or cut tone as desired. Just my opinion.
Woahhh what are those pick ups
yes!!!
how do you even slap like I cant slap without hitting the other notes
Sournuts ruclips.net/video/UfdG9gsAGlI/видео.html this video is very helpful
Practice honestly. Play it really slow until you figure out the pattern.
Any tips to improve on ghost notes
Which bass guitar is that?
I have a problem. When I slap the 7th and 5th frett on the A string, it doesn't seem to quite ring. All I hear pretty much is the slapping sound. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?
Just Music You’re probably trying slap too soon...get comfortable with bass at first and then start slapping with some easier exercises
Either that or you need new strings. Old strings sound pretty dead when you try slap
Whoa
Anyone knows what kind of pickups are those?
Thunderfork Sims Super Quads
Thanks for the fast reply and for all the amazing lessons, cheers!
Flea found a niche and exploited it, he's good at what he does. He's no Claypool or stu hamm, what he does in rhcp is fantastic!

Cheesie in London, same as po'd in Usa. Ok bring on tha Bass!
I always loved bass. iam thinking about buying one, is a fender squier affinity a good one for beginners? And what amp should i get?
Egor Yildirim Even If you just want to get started I cant recommend a Fender Jazz or Precision Bass enough. Those Squier Basses are not worth the money because original Fender ones are so much better and you"ll have much more fun with them. If 600-800$ is too much you can take a look at BassTheWorld.com here on RUclips. One of the last Videos was about a new Sire Bass which is about 450$. I would check this one out. Also Yamaha TRBx Basses or G&L Basses or some Sandberg Basses (like the Electra Vs4) are really good for the money. And it is not the Amp making the great sound, it mostly depends on your Skills and especially the Bass you play. Thats why I cant recommend the original Fender ones enough!
Warwick, EBS, Hartke or Markbass make really high quality amps!
I hope this will help you!
Cheers
If you're going to go for a Squier, go for the Vintage Mod or Classic Vibe models. I've only tried one Affinity and it wasn't very good. But I've got a couple of Vintage Mod's kicking about. As a beginner, the amp make is really not that important. Just go for something affordable.
Thank you very much , i will lookup for those
I agree with Scavengerx3 for the most part, however the Vintage Mod that +TalkingBass mentioned is the exception. I will put the tone of the Vintage Modified J-Bass up against basses twice the price. It is a solid bass for about $350us. I used one for 6 years, only modification I made was a high mass bridge. I only made it my backup bass when I finally found the perfect P-bass for me.
NOOOO, dont buy a squier/fender go for a sire v7
how is he hitting the A7 without moving his finger
i think it's called baring 🤷♂
going from guitar to this my right fingers hurt aha

How TF do you do ghost notes
It’s basic muting on the strings
I have the same bass.😃
Suren Tamang Me Toooooooo😃
@@pi_husky4485 slap like if you have the same bass 😃.
Epico
@@chuddlevideos good luck .✌
Thank you for this but who invented the ghost notes👻😡
Had to watch it at 0.75 speed
how the hell do you slap the d string without making a complete ruckus
John Doe its gets easier, you will develop natural place were you hover your thumb
Above The string. Pratice slaping that string only and soon you will get it
Blister alert!😂
What bass is that
Jonah Per Ibanez SR1000. Bought it about '92
TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons I'm an ibanez guy myself
TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons it's beautiful
I just sold sold my sr-300...they are an amazing line of basses. But i retired from bass to sing... (I still have an old $50 rogue i fiddle on and a nice Ltd guitar i record riffs with but i hust dont have the time or desire to play full time...)
Flea is my favourite bass player but Davie 504 is da best
Good tone and good tutorial, but he’s not playing it the way flea does. Listen to live versions of can’t stop to play it the right way.
This guy looks like flea if he was born in England, became an estate agent, didn't age well and had an iron difficency
guitar player here. slapp hurt
Am i the only trying to be approved by davie503 playing bass on guitar?

Soo hard to understand as a beginner bass player
of course. . . Flea isn't for beginers. . . even for me with almost 10 Years playing bass it's dificult . . . Sad . . . XD have to practice harder . .
Aldo Rodriguez lol If you don’t slap once for 10 years obviously it’s gonna be hard but if you slap from day 1 flea isn’t gonna be that hard
E7(no 3rd), Dsus2,Bm(add4),Cadd9 are the chords. Not Em,D,Bm,C
jjwp 88 lol. E7 without a 3rd is not E7. The tonality is obviously minor so what you're actually hearing is an implied Em7. So like I said, we have Em, D, Bm and C. I'll let you stew over why I might be specifying those triads rather than the added note voicings you mentioned.
TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons I have sheet music for both bass and guitar for the album. The chords that I wrote, are the chords on the staves for both bass and guitar. Both the tab,and written music
the muting is so hard
Leo Bass it’s not, just repeat it over and over. Like 90% of other obstacles in music or even life itself!
Are you popping with your thumb?
Cemetery Gates noooo......
there is no soul behind this guy's play
fat beat Thankyou, thankyou and... Thankyou.
For someone with the username Werner Heisenberg you're really stupid
too much talk and less play
well he needs to explain it incase there's some new players
u talk way too fast mate, go slowly for the beginners out there
Adjust the playback speed of the video to .75% and then even slower when necessary to pick up on the subtleties
he's slapping wrongly. I'm a bass player and you pop the string with your middle finger pulling upwards. not with your thumb
Liam Clancey buy some glasses!! he pops with index not thumb! every bass player has a different style!!
Fleauses his middle finger, but that isn't the only way to pop..
Bass sounds terrible
