I just brought the bluray and its looks beauiful not like the old dvd which looked like crap its about time warner released a bluray of this great film. and the soundtrack is in 2 channel stereo which the dvd was not and a nice audio commentary by director George Sidney and song outtakes by the beauitful Ava Gardner.
Looks gorgeous! I was lucky enough to see this on a theater screen twice (last time in early '90's), but both times the print was faded and washed-out. Isn't Blu-ray a beautiful thing?
The story of "Showboat" has many sad elements, especially the way the original production was written. The love between Magnolia and Gaylord is very deep and real, though. That's another reason this musical is so sad. Despite all the sorrow (and I think I might cry for about 3/4 of the show, depending how well the director handled it,) Showboat is a full story with joy and sorrow, love, music and dance.
@@carlfrano6384 Carl, the production values are great but I prefer uplifting escapism to depression. The world is depressing enough! Give me "Singin' in the Rain" every day. "You are my lucky star" gets me every time. God bless Gene Kelly, Donald 'O' Connor and Debbie Reynolds!
The GOOD NEWS: The cinematography and the music are excellent here, and I've always loved this opening. The BAD NEWS: more bogus stereotypes about slaves/Blacks being happy on the plantation. I don't know why they're excited about the showboat coming, it wasn't as if they could go see the show or anything. In real life if they just dropped the cotton and ran out of the fields like that they'd be beaten half to death.
@@BLTKellys so if they had just dropped the cotton and ran out of the field like that the boss wouldn't have paid them the meager wages that they got and they would have had to go hungry for God knows how long. And if they had dared try to take some vegetables or hunt for food on the boss's land, they would have been accused of stealing and lynched.
@@tianabrown3074 whether they're slaves or workers, they have a right to be happy and express it just like anyone else. It would have been strange to see them unhappy about the arrival of the show boat. Someone might then have got the impression that they loved being slaves or working so much, that they couldn't care for entertainment.
I just spit laughed all over my table because of how rediculous the opening scene was😄🤣😂. For a second I thought the slaves were going to break into a dance routine to show how happy they were.

OMG, more than classic. The song OLD MAN RIVER made this movie.
I love the joy on the field workers faces when they are told the showboat is coming. It’s such a lovely sequence.

These stereo elements had better be on the bluray, it is a selling point for me.
i think it is were find out in a few days
They are! The theatrical mono is included as well.
They should have given the little girl who played Kim an Academy award.
WOW!!!!!!
Nice
Show Boat!
È splendida Ma si può comprare
It is a stunning restoration but the story is really depressing. It doesn't have the emotional uplift of "Singin' in the Rain."

They are not playing slaves though. This is set after the abolishment of slavery.

Not slaves any more. But I take your point.
