Hi fellow Londoner! Thanks for your kind comments! Back when I was in your position, a close friend did try to convince me of radiology, but I really needed to do surgery first to realise that it wasn't for me.
If you ever think about radiology, I highly recommend a taster week to see if it is really for you. Surgery is still an amazing career that can impact people's lives in a big way so good luck with whichever path you choose!

Thank you! It's a really tough decision and I don't want you to make a decision purely based on my videos because I'm biased. Surgery is still a great career, just not for me in the end. Good luck for your applications and whatever you choose, the radiology reporting room door is always open!

Flat higherarchy? Could you please elaborate more. Thanks
Essentially, a big barrier to communication is having a rigid hierarchy - or very clear differences between seniority of doctors. In emergency situations, this can affect how well a team works together. For example, you might be afraid to speak up in an emergency or tell the team of an important finding if you felt intimidated by how senior your boss is.
A flat hierarchy is when you try to break down some of those barriers (such as, by using first names) and in emergencies, this is usually very effective. In radiology, we are on first name terms very frequently with the consultants and it fosters a more open, inclusive environment.

Hey! Many training schemes will have ST1s not doing any weekends or nights, which means you fall to the lowest payscale with no on-call supplements. This seems to be £40,257 per year for an ST1 (www.bma.org.uk/pay-and-contracts/pay/junior-doctors-pay-scales/pay-scales-for-junior-doctors-in-england), which after tax/pensions/student loan can be about £2300 per month take home or less (rough estimate using an online take home pay calculator). (Obligatory statement - This is not financial advice). Pay does go up when you work weekends/evenings though, which is usually ST2 or after part 1 exams in ST1. You can also do locums in old hospitals you have worked at with your free weekends. Hope that helps!
