Congrats on the beautiful 350Z ... looks amazing!!!
About the stops, leave the top glass, it will help you shape the acrylic sheet. and if you have an oven big enough to heat it you just put it on top and it will take shape. It is also possible to outline it roughly, say 1 inch above the edges (this will reduce the size of the acrylic sheet)
You need an ultrasonic cutter, you will cut it perfectly, both it and you will be able to separate the lens from the stopper. Once the brake cover is shaped, you will need a small amount of silicone to seal it, too much will spread it both out and in, which cannot be removed! You are in the right direction about the black painting on the edges of the stop lights. This hides an aftermarket job!

Honestly I prefer the stocks to the skyline tails 🤷🏽♂️ but either way I agree! Going to be building them next weekend I think
also when use a oven to get the acrylic soft set a time for 8 min at 300 degrees

@@STAYIN_ALIVE Only other person I’ve seen do this is Max Kelson.
Every one else either builds them the traditional way or uses a lense/ acrylic thing that has a pattern on it which don’t look like actual clears and is already flexible
Currently doing this for my secong gen Forester, after the one company that made clears for my tails decided to discontinue making them for good 😭 boutta do the shaping part wish me luck!

Definitely have to dremel edges to get those smooth edges and possibly better fitment , you mentioned acrylic I find polycarbonate plexi glass to do better what’s your take ? Great job either way great gem great vid

I tried this method but I found it was easier to leave the oem lenses and shape the acrylic over it to avoid warping
We thought about doing that but thought it would make the lenses too big 🤔

@@dirtybuildmedia566 it was just cm over but helped when sealing so the bead wouldn't end all bumpy just trim the excess at the end so it's all smooth but hey you killed it man... makes me wanna hire you to do mine haha don't really have time now

Do you think painting a black border around the inside of the lenses would work? Maybe tape straight lines on the inside edge and paint before sealing. Just a thought though, nice work!
Thanks! And possibly the problem is you have to lay the sealant on the inside so the part you painted will be covered by the sealant and you’ll see the sealant through the lenses instead of the paint :/
Lay the tape before the silicone and pull it for a nice straight edge.
when you took out the led housing out of the tailights to repaint them, are you able to remove the bottom reflector to not paint over it?
From what I remember you can, however they are sensitive and don’t come out easy. For mine we didn’t want to risk pulling it out and it snapping so we just painted them

Hey buddy why you did use the Owen to heat the acrylic to mod the form of the tail
Was an option for sure but I wasn’t sure if that was something I would be able to do with the Q50 tails as well. But you can do it that way too and they will probably come out better.

Yes sir! They are red already so you won’t need to mess with them at all

do you think this would be possible with a GR86? it has a much different style than the cars you've done, i'm looking for alternatives to having this done without having them sent out and done for $900
@@alexsimon3041 don’t see why not. It’s definitely a process and is different for each light as different shapes mean more time and new challenges but I think it’s worth a shot. Essentially if you build them over your existing lens then if you can’t build them for any reason it’s no harm done

why don't you do a copy of lens instead of the housing?
If we took the lens off and tried copying it using this method the lens would more than likely crack/snap during the process.
If you mean why not do it to the light while the lens is still on, we did that on my buddy’s 370z there’s a video up of that. For the most part it works doing it that way too!

So I’m looking to do this on a 10th gen civic coupe but there’s a lot of really sharp edges on the tails, how was it trying to mold them, do you think it would form around a sharp angle like that?
It’s honestly pretty flexible once heated. Should be able to get it done man!!

Don’t know the exact size unfortunately we just grabbed the size that looked big enough for two Lens but they sell big ones that you can buy just in case you need tot Ty it a couple of times.
Just make sure your kit grabbing one that’s too thick

What body kit is this?
It’s the AMS GT kit mixed with the Rocketbunny fenders and some other bits and pieces. I did a bunch of custom body work and stuff to it to make it all blend together

I don’t know the exact specs but we got the thinnest one that we could that was also big enough to do two taillights

There are a lot of people with actual q50 clears
Not true just looks like it. If you zoom in on their photos you can see the lenses are cracked/gone. Again most clears are made by purchasing tails with clear lenses then taking that lens and putting it on top of stock tails. But Q50s only have red and black lenses. There is no OEM or aftermarket tails with clear lenses. So the only way to have a lens for them would be to make it from scratch like these.

Red tail lights looks much better. Clear tail lights look ghetto
Mhm except that a lot of cars come with clear tails stock and red tail lights don’t match ANYTHING on the car and completely throws off the colors.
