Hello Rosalie [Reacts] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! Many thanks to Brandon for introducing you to this band :) This song was performed in Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland...
.. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tu-oh-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and very recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Following the success of Beste Zangers show, Floor performed a series of solo concerts in the Netherlands in early 2020 with songs from her entire career (After Forever, Revamp, Northward, Nightwish, Beste Zangers) following that the last and the largest concert, at AFAS Amsterdam, to be professionally recorded and broadcast online, with the support of a crowdfunding campaign. After several rescheduling, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the concert took place at the beginning of September 2021 in 3 consecutive days. Hey Gabriel. I've been casting an eye to Rosalie's comments checking for you. Just wanted to step in let you know you're appreciated from this side of these videos as well. Keep fighting he good fight...I swear I'll get their names straight eventually :p
Tuomas Holopainen is the keyboardist and he's the main man behind the band who writes the vast majority of the music. He also writes the orchestral parts. The guitarist is Emppu and he's the character in the band, though they all have their moments. At the same concert during "I Want My tears Back" Emppu messes with Floor's in-ears and it's a real laugh when you know what is happening. In other concerts, Floor has chased Emppu across the stage. When Floor goes dancing, Emppu gets the hell out of the way as the poor little dude would get run over. There's loads of these little moments scattered throughout their songs.
I'd get out of her way, too. It'd be like getting hit by an NFL linebacker....a very beautiful linebacker, but it'd hurt nonetheless...lol

That would be Jarkko Piipari. Pretty famous drum tech among drum techs. Which, I'll admit, isn't the most famous scene of people to be famous among. But every drum tech in the industry knows who Jarkko Piipari is.
The entire mix of this concert is phenomenal. For me, their best sounding live recording might be Tampere, but this one is comparable.
I would guarantee you there are some samples blended in with the drums, btw. That's almost ubiquitous in metal these days. I don't look it as cheating. It's still Jukka's performance. The samples just provide a cleaner, more controlled sound. The mic'd drums give you the realism.
It might be him himself - he was the drum tech originally.

As an old time rocker starting in the 70s , I have witnessed an untold number of live performances in my lifetime. This is in my opinion one of the greatest live performances , not only in rock, but any genre ,that there has ever been. Totally flawless , and to think they can pull this off live is amazing.

@@seanharrison933 Well Floor's first show with Nightwish was on Oct 1, 2012 in Seattle when she performed at the last moment with them after they fired Anette Olzon and this was the Wacken Festival 2013. If you search her first show with them it will come up adn there is video of it too. on Oct 9, 2013 she was announced as the official singer of the band. The Wacken 2013 concert festival was held from July 31 to August 3rd, 2013 and this show was on August 3rd. Search the lineup for the festival too. it is amazing what bands played that year.
Those goosebumps you felt when she started singing are what's known as a "Floorgasm".
I don't need high notes to have a floorgasm... she begins floorgasmic and it ends floorgasmic.

The symphonic part is actually the London Philharmonic Orchestra with their choir. Nightwish uses several English choirs to add to their music. Floor is technical a lyrical soprano but has the range to sing some alto notes. She also growls and can hit a very clear D6. She's got it all. BTW, there is a video of her actually singing the phone book. Someone bet her she couldn't do it but she did.

In The documentary about making of EFMB Tomas says that they been working with this orchestra for over ten years. Pip Williams is the orchestral leader. There's a misconception floating around that NW works with The London Philharmonic Orchestra. It's The 53 Piece Orchestra (might have change the name) lead by Pip Williams. Pls let me know if you are sittning on info that provets me wrong. It's good to be wrong at times. You actually learn two things: howit isn't and how it is opposed being right. Then You only learn how it is :-)

If you react to Nightwish, it's almost inevitable to react to Epica too. 🙂 They are the best of the best in the whole symphonic metal subgenre. Epica are generally heavier than NW since they also incorporate death metal elements into their music, but they also have several wonderful ballads and acoustic versions of their metal songs that can melt your heart. Can you tell me what would you like to start with? Something heavy? Something more radio-friendly or some of their longer epic masterpieces? Or maybe a ballad? That would be a bit unusual intro to Epica, but still good.
Welcome to Nightwish. 2 things are true here. Floor showed a lot of versatility, range, and technique in this song. This performance does not even begin to scratch the surface of what Floor can do. Each Nightwish song is very different and will be more amazing than the last (regardless of which order you listen). In addition, there are a lot of solo performances from Floor, which further expand her talents. She sings in 5 or more languages, and does everything from pop, to rock, to opera. And with regard to Nightwish, Floor is their 3rd lead vocalist and the first 2 are also amazing! I am hoping you continue this journey.

I really enjoyed Marco and wish he never left. All of them are good but Floor Jansen and Marco Heitala just outstanding.

Looking back on it nearly 10 years later, as I have mentioned in other reactions, the Doctor Who saying of "a fixed point in time" applies. There is Nightwish pre-Wacken 2013, and Nightwish post-Wacken 2013. Wacken 2013 is what pushed them from just being a band loved by metalheads to a band loved by EVERYONE. Seriously, I have yet to show anyone Ghost Love Score that has not been absolutely floored (pun intended) by it :P
She held that last note for 8 seconds. But if you watch the more recent concerts, you will find one where she did it for a whopping 15 seconds! Small correction to what Brandon said: Floor studied rock and had a year of opera training.

No one does what Floor does. Her voice would be impressive enough, but the way she uses it is almost beyond belief. Clarity, pronunciation, the amount of fullness she carries up through her range. And then there's the way she becomes everything she sings, without it ever being cheesy, or inauthentic. Just totally natural, like she's been living every performance all her life. She's the 'once in a generation' (or perhaps century) voice.
I think this may be one of the best descriptions of Floor and her incredible voice!!!!!!!!

Floor is by far the best female vocalist in music today, she can sing pretty much anything from rock to opera to Disney classics, and even does the raspy growling in a couple of songs too.
She's our Valkyrie Queen or Valkyrie Goddess. Both works. And it's the keboardist Tuomas Holopainen who writes most of the music and lyrics.

Fun fact: you mentioned toward the end of your reaction that you’re sure they’d done this song many times. But in fact, Floor had just joined the band a few months prior. In fact, her first concert with Nightwish was precisely 10 years ago tonight. She was called in when the singer they had been touring with fell ill and discovered she was pregnant. Floor was asked to finish the tour with them and had 48 hours to learn the set list. If I recall, at the time that the video you reacted to was recorded, she was not yet made a permanent member. There is a documentary of those crazy days titled “please learn the set list in 48 hours”
I’ve been a Nightwish fan for years, through all 3 singers. I was already a fan of Floors from her first band, After Forever, which she joined right after graduation. When it was announced that she was coming on board I was both ecstatic and furious- ecstatic for obvious reasons, furious because I was at the final show with the previous singer. It was 2 long years before they came back to the US and I finally got to see Floor. I’ve seen them live 5 times and they’re absolutely unparalleled on stage, particularly since Floor joined the band.

Tuomos is the keyboardest, actually - Empuu is the guitarist. Tuomas writes everything, however yes, Empuu is awesome. Very humble. You cannot be in the audience and not feel it and react, and you feel it even in a video. I love watching Storytime to really see it, but you see that joy in all their songs, from the crowd and themselves. Also, Nightwish Army we're typically referred to. It's appropriate. You just suddenly find yourself an over the top fan and cannot stop gushing about them. Sometimes feels like you'd follow Floor into armed combat, were we back in those days, if you imagine her presence on horseback lol. Valkyrie Goddess for sure. They are all amazing.
Emmpu plays what the songs want nothing more, and nothing less. They all are virtuosos of music. Playing multiple instruments at or above the professional level they have the ability to really combine into the incredible musical performances that immerse the listener in a sea of emotions.

This is the last song/video I showed my mom before she died. She had been in a choir at UCA here in Conway, Arkansas back in the 80s that did operatic pieces and she was a tenor. She got to go to germany , Switzerland, france and other places. She sang in Notre Dame as well. I'm glad I came across your reaction and to see the look of joy on your face makes me instantly start crying. I like to watch reactions to nightwish, to see peoppes faces when they hear such great music and then I'll suddenly think of my mom.

Emppu pinched Marko and Tuomas because it was awesome what Floor did. "This is real" At the time of this performance, Floor played with them only for 11 months. They called her during a tour through the States after firing their former singer. Floor said yes and had 48 hours to learn the setlist. Nice docu on YT btw. 😄

I was fortunate enough to see them in May, despite the fact that it is almost 10 years later and in a much smaller venue, her voice and their performance are just as captivating! When they took the stage nobody sat down for 2 hours!
I saw them in May as well and agree. I was fortunate to be able to photograph the show at The Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD .... up close and personal ... the sound wave was incredible, powerful and Floor's vocals superb

ive watched this vid w you & Brandon more than once, a bunch...and like ur energy & appreciation of a new genre.
Regardless of the size of venue, Nightwish performs with the same intensity. Was lucky enough to see them in Md this Spring and the energy was insane.
Was also at the Maryland show and agree that the energy was great.
They are willing to play the smaller venues like Des Moines Iowa (they aren’t as popular in the USA as the rest of the world.) They still put on a great performance.
I saw them in Minneapolis MN - maybe 2k people. They still perform like there are 80,000 people. Amazing

I was at a Nightwish concert less than a month ago. All of these songs hit so much harder when you are in the crowd feeling it all.

I have a question: I had tickets to a concert for december last year and was so hesitant, I didn't go. I was so afraid, that the departure of Marco and the health issues of Floor would ruin the Nightwish experience for me. Did I miss out? :( I think I did..

Tuomas is the keyboardist. Enjoy and there are so many songs. From epics like "The Poet and the Pendalum" to heavy "Slaying the dreamer". One of my favorits is "Dead boys poem".
As others have corrected things, Empuu is the guitarist, and Tuomas is the keyboardist, who writes nearly all the music and lyrics.
Now you are hooked on Nightwish :) This performance is one of the best EVER in the world of music.

Floor is also doing some awesome solo work that shows more of her abilities. Of course, her Nightwish songs are my favorite because of the incredible rock part. I get chills & tears in my eyes every time I hear her sing parts of this song for some reason..... but I just figured out why.... It must be that it's just so DARN BEAUTIFUL!!!! I never get tired of it.
I really like you guys collaborating together on this, you had some great discussions about what you were seeing and hearing. I already love That's Not Acting's reactions, and you've really endeared yourself to me as well, and I really look forward to seeing more from you. One quick note, just to avoid confusion. TNA got the name right, but the wrong instrument. :P Tuomas is the keyboard player, not the guitarist. Not saying Emppu (the guitarist) isn't a genius in his own right, but credit where credit is due.

I will say that I am completely surprised that I got that one thing that wrong…I don’t know what led me to think that was Tuomas but somewhere I got that idea and, yeah…I’ve reacted to maybe 20 of their performances 100% believe that was him, lol 😅. But thanks again. At least now I know moving forward!

Although this is The dopest of all Nightwish songs and performances, you should really dig in to their discography, and have a taste of all 3 singers performances throughout the years. I've been listening them from since like 1998, and though I love Floor, Tarja was the original singer and oh lord, was she amazing ❤️ I recommend you to listen and enjoy the first 3 albums, then you will know where Nightwish came from.
And yes, Tuomas is the absolute mastermind behind all of this, one of the last true composers in the World.
From iron maiden to judas priest deep purple to blacksabath I have been to and listened to every great band and vocalist and I can honestly say this the best live show performances I have ever seen🥰🥰🥰

Most people who react to this have already seen a lot of metal. It's great to watch someone for whom the entire scene is new. They just toured the U.S. earlier this year. American music audiences are clueless, but that was to our benefit- we got to see them in venues holding less than 2000, instead of the 80,000 that showed up to this performance at Wacken.

Hands down the best live operatic performance ever. And i mean - the best opera singers today do 1 performance in a play. She sang a whole open air concert. Song after song and delivered this crisp and clear and powerful set. Opera singers my azz. THIS IS TALENT.

Floor is known by many names. I prefer Valkyrie Goddess. She’s had three years rock training and one year of classical/opera/musical theater. Also was a vocal coach. One thing I always love about this production is that as it goes, it almost gives me the feeling of a martyr in a revolution, specifically in the chorus. When she starts with the verse "My fall will be for you" (which feels very martyr to me), it's incredibly operatic, clear, almost melancholic in the tone she uses. As the song goes on, that tone gets harder and fiercer, until she hits those notes at the end after hyping up the crowd, like she's starting a revolution. Saying that it's "time we no longer hold our love" and "relive the sin of Adam and Eve". I have a lot of feelings about Floor and she, pun intended, floors me every time.
