About Our Discussions: At Chronic Love, in collaboration with our generous featured guests, we share candid discussions about living with chronic illness with the intention of showing the humanity, the wholeness of life impacted by chronic disease and chronic conditions. We hope that these conversations can offer a needed counterpoint to the often sterile portrayals of illness and treatment in the service of helping those living with illness to feel less alone; to offer supportive others a lens through which they may more sensitively meet the needs of their fellow humans with illness; and to raise awareness, curiosity, critical thought, and contemplations of change as we lean into issues that impose further hardship on humans living with illness.

Well there were times when I just wanted to die because of the pain I had in so many ways. But I knew that I couldn’t give up because I had eight kids to raise and so God got me through everyday and I’m a fighter and I’m 69 years old and I’m still here fighting With Melanoma. But my advice to all of you going through this . Please Believe! Because even though you are so sick and so tired and trying to be a parent or etc.

This is my story. 38 years old perfect health. No prior symptoms. June 23rd, I was admitted to the ER due to migraines while at work. I blacked out in the parking lot while waiting on the ambulance. I woke up in the SCIU after undergoing emergency decompressive brain craniotomy surgery for a brain tumor. I stayed there for 9 days. I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and brain metastases. The cancer spreaded to my brain. I was told by the surgeon i stopped breathing for 35 minutes before having to be intubated. I completed 5 days of srs brain Radiation in hopes to remove the small amount of tumor the surgeon wasn't able to remove. It's been 74 days now and i started my first round of chemotherapy yesterday. My first two infusions went great. It was my 3rd infusion of Toxal medication where I started to experience shortness of breath, chest pain and throat locking up. 25 minutes in the infusion they has to stop it. I must say that over the 74 days, I've experienced no cancer symptoms, thankfully. I dont know what my future holds, but im trusting God, no matter what

On the outside we looked like a carefree mother and daughter to anyone but on the inside we were going through so much trauma. I've learned not to judge so much or be envious of people because you don't know what their life is really like. And Jayme don't ever feel guilty that you are living an ok life. And yes - it takes a long time to be diagnosed. I kept telling myself it was a bruise from my puppy even deep down i knew it was cancer. This was on a Thurs and by the following Wednesday i knew i had triple negative breast cancer. Luckily i had 3 close friends and a cousin who also had breast cancer years early. My surgeon was great, took time to explain everything, i took a fried who was also a RN. I swear i missed so much because i was in a fog. I knew i was following apart. I just could feel my cancer growing. Next wa a blur, surgery, barely healed and chemo started. Thankfully my lymph nodes were negative but because the type of cancer i had. I developed grade 4 neuropathy in my hands and feet. I never understood how painful it was, changed my life. I could not continue to work, take a ton of medication. I know manage my pain, unsteadiness and all the times i fall. So frustrating. I will be 10 yrs cancer free and i rejoice that .

I pray that Jaymie is continuing to do well. My dad had a chest cold in early winter 1996. After it hung on for a month, and got worse, he went to his doctor only to be told he had bronchitis. In early 1997, he went back again and was told he had walking pneumonia. No chest xray was ever ordered, and my dad was old school and never went to the doctor, so you know he had to be hurting. By June, he was having lower back pain and trouble walking. He went back again and was told he had a pinched nerve and needed PT. August 2nd, he couldn't get out of bed. His wife got help and took him to her doctor that did a chest xray and discovered lung tumor the size of his fist. Admitted to hospital on a Friday, on Monday afternoon he was told to get everything in order because he might live a month. His CA has mets to his bones from his skull to his lower leg, had taken out two lumbar vertebrae and part of his hip. He went home on August 9th and passed away on 8/17/97. It took me a couple of years to get accustomed to this, but I went back to college when I was 47 to become an xray tech. I worked 16 years in cardiac cath and helped numerous patients live after a heart attack. I held families when their loved ones died in the lab. I lived for my dad, and I never let a doctor I worked closely with keep information from a patient. I can't believe there are still doctors like Jaymie's and my dad's out there.

I was diagnosed 30 years ago with Stage 2 breast cancer. What I learned is that we MUST be an active partner in our medical situation and not let the doctors make all the decisions. I found that my opinion about what was going on in my body was totally important to the treatment - like 50% me, 50% doctors. I remember I went to a leading dermatologist at the University of Michigan about a rough patch on my nose. I said I would like it biopsied because I thought it was cancer. He acted like I was being silly and overly cautious but agreed to biopsy it so I wouldn't worry, but he could tell it was not cancer. Turned out to be squamous cell carcinoma. With the breast cancer, I also switched doctors in the middle of treatment because the one I had scared me. I was very shy then and always worried about hurting people's feelings but I thought "This is cancer. I have one chance to do this right." The doctor called me at home to ask why I switched to his partner and I told him that he scared me because he was too serious and always was frowning when he read my chart. His partner was really good but also funny and I always left feeling better than when I came in. The first doctor said that he thought patients wanted him to be serious. It just made me sad.

That is so true, been there, I had surgery burning some fibroid they were so small that my uterus got burnt without the doctor's knowledge, day 3 I felt bloated and uncomfortable so I went to urgent care after my vitals the doctor said oh you don't have a fever so I doubt an infection, day 5 I collapsed 3 time and my blood pressure plummeted I went back and it was the same story and I should rest, 5 hours later I went back and dema ded a blood test before I knew it there was the ambulance my entire blood stream was poisoned, a big bag of pus was in my belly and the deadly sepsis, thank God I was my own advocate to ask for the blood test, emergency open belly surgery, I still cringe when I think of how close I was to death

The medical community in general is extremely neglectful. It’s controlled by insurance companies who aren’t medical professionals. I’ve been fighting for years to find out why I have systemic problems and they just keep wanting to pump me with more medications instead of finding the core problem.

@@chroniclove I have cancer that began in my thyroid with no family history. It began as a swollen, painful lymph node on the side of my neck that I asked my PCP to look at. She sent me for a biopsy and referred me to a thyroid specialist. He told me it was cancer and sent me for an ultrasound and MRI with contrast. Upon receipt of the results, he referred me to an oncology surgeon who specializes in head and neck surgeries because he said the extent of surgery I would require was beyond his ability. I had the surgery which removed my thyroid and many lymph nodes. I was then sent back to the thyroid specialist who then referred me to a radiology oncology specialist that administered my radiology treatments. I now see him every 6 months for scans. All the cancer is gone except for two small spots on my left lung that were considered to be too small to biopsy yet so we're just keeping a check on them for the time being. I have now been referred to an endocrinologist which I see every few months.
I said all that to say THIS: Education on informing patients of their status and showing empathetic care for them is WOEFULLY lacking in the entire medical field, from PCP level to specialists. I still have never been told my stage. I have been bounced around and passed from one doctor to another with little to no explanation of the purpose. I have had statements made to me in med speak as if I should automatically know what they mean. For instance, my radiology oncologist told me I was "stable", which I understood to mean I was in remission and I happily reported that to all my huge family. Imagine my feelings when I had to walk that back and tell them that upon further questioning I learned it simply meant the spots on my lung had not grown since my last scan. Between all the doctor visits from one end of the state to another and the endless trips for testing not available in my area in between, at 72 this has been an ordeal that I feel could have been made easier by at least being treated as a human rather than a case. This doesn't even speak to the enormous expense involved with no end in sight and the fact that I have other serious health issues requiring attention. The physical wear and tear and the mental and emotional toll all this has taken on me is ridiculous. If we were some third world nation I might expect it but instead it is simply unjustifiable. I can definitely understand why some people just give up.

You are 100% right. I worked in Radiology. I was licensed in both Mammography and CAT Scan. I would be doing biopsies with the Radiologist. MANY times, even before, biopsies went to pathology, it was obvious the patient had Cancer. More so in Mammography. The Radiologists would, explain to the patient, what was going on. Even with the most sympathetic explanation what was found, it was not received. I would then sit with the patient and re explain, simpler what the Radiologist said. Patients need time and a hand to hold, to absorb the information..

What an extraordinary person Jaymie is, and Robin, you are wonderful. I work as a physician with a specialized practice in helping people with chronic illness to live the best lives possible - whatever that looks like to them. Most people don't want to hear this, yet we're still a long way from understanding many of the diseases that afflict us. Even so, there's much we can do to help, and letting people know that they don't have to walk their path alone alone can be huge.
I'm so sorry for the many gaps in the medical system, and for the insensitivities of its practitioners. We're all just people, of course, and people are famously fallible; still - we can do so much better, and that starts with seeing patients as people. Though I went to one of North America's more "progressive" medical schools, there was remarkably little training on talking - and listening - to patients; the focus was still mostly on learning to recognize and treat disease. Is it any wonder that the patient - the person - so often gets lost in the medicalized "fog of war," with our current emphasis on "battling the disease?"
This channel is such a refreshing gem; I'm so glad I found it! I wish the best for Robin and for Jaymie, as well as for the many beautiful souls watching who may be feeling alone today.

    • @chroniclove
      @chroniclove  Год назад +11

Robin, here! Jaymie is absolutely extraordinary! Thank you so, so much for your extremely thoughtful and sweet note. Our world needs more physicians like you. Your words are quite refreshing to read and they're so true! The expectation should never be that any understanding of anything--medicine, disease, science--is ever complete or perfect. It's ever evolving. We should all understand that doctors are human and certainly fallible as we all are. Knowing this, owning the imperfection, the humanity all around would help doctors to hear patients and take their reported symptoms seriously, to prescribe testing where indicated. When the public understands that medicine is imperfect and doctors will be human, will make mistakes, it helps patients to realize just how important it is to step into their own power and advocate for themselves. The more we can come together in our humanity, the more we can close these gaps! Anyway, thank you so much for your note, for watching. Welcome to this community!! Sending you so much 💛!

My 28 year old close friend just passed away from complications from terminal cancer. She was grossly mishandled by our health care system. By the time they did something to find the cancer in her breast, it had already started spreading to her lymphnodes. They put her off for 9 months after she intitially felt the lump. The doctor told her "she was too young" and it was "probably just a swollen lymphnode" so they gave her antibiotics. That didn't work so she went back and they waved her off again. Then lump got much larger and quite painful. I told her she should go back and insist on an ultrasound at least and stomp her feet a little to advocate for herself. Long story short, the removed her breast and lymphnodes hoping they got it all, but it had then spread to her lungs and liver. Then very quickly (even with treatment) spread to her spine. From the time they told her it had metastasized to when she passed away was nearly 4 months (August 5th-November 29th) and it was because she got Pneumonia as a complication from the lung cancer.
When are these doctors going to get out of their heads that someone is too young to have cancer? It makes me so angry.

I was eventually diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer at the beginning of Jan 23 after having a COPD check and an xray where they found fluid on my lung. She could never understand that. All I could say ro her is life isn't fair. In the end.she died.a horrible death fighting for every breath. I remembered thinking I wish my aunts could be there to see what she had to go through!

@Nancy Jones I was there with my Dad till his last gasp of air. It was kind of frightening a little. His last breath was literally like a deep breath like going under water in a pool. The hospital made sure he was comfortable with an open line of morphine. The bad part was they gave the family the button. It was very hard for me to push the button. The nurses ended up giving him his final dose as the family was surrounded him. The good die young is true. He was only 61.

Such a healthy person, 0 alcohol, 0 cigarettes, 0 drugs, healthy and balanced eating and the list can go on , on a day he coughed blood he thought it was the result of a tear in his throat. No other symptoms, Saw a doctor and after some tests he was diagnosed with LC. He was so much in disbelief. He lasted nearly 4 years. That was 6 years ago. Meanwhile my other brother living on KFC, McDonalds ant every junk food you can think of. My deceased brother used to counsel him because of his eating habits, still until today no health problems no even the flu. I've dealt with several chronic (and one rare) conditions for 34 years. Many docs, some awful and a few wonderful. Many hospitalizations, invasive tests, etc...some helpful and some made things worse. The point about what the doc says and what the patient hears is sooo valid. I'm still here largely because I refuse to say die! But all the advice about advocating for yourself is impossible when you feel like crap and no one takes you seriously, especially male doctors. Sadly, Jaymie's story isn't that unusual. I hope she continues to feel well!

My friend Serena had lung cancer, she was only 39! She was a mother of 5. I always said to her ' I always know it's you walking past my house because of your cough '!!. The doctors weren't really on the ball with it either. It's funny how we make excuses. I told my friend insist on having a chest x-ray. I was the same, I couldn't breathe properly, I was having to stop walking every 5 minutes. It was during the pandemic I ended up in hospital having my left lung drained and I'd had breast cancer about 10 years before. And when I got the results of them draining my lung it came back as the cancer had spread to my left lung and top right rib. I take chemo tablets, to prolong my life. Scary shit

Hi Jaymie, I wish you all the best with your health.
Last year February '22 I was lying in a hospital. They made a CT-SCAN of my tummy and lung area. A day later a doctor came to my bed and told me they found a spot in my left lung. I couldn't believe it because I wasn't in the hospital because of problems with my lungs. In April '22 they did a biobsy and a week later I heard the result of this. It was a Neuro Endocrine Tumor (NET) and I needed an operation to removed the tumor. The 1st of June I had the operation. The surgeons removed the left under lung and 3 lymph nodes. Three weeks later I needed to go back to the hospital for the results. One of the surgeons told me the 3 lymph nodes were clean. So the cancer wasn't spread out. I was so happy to hear that. Now I need to be checked every year, for 10 years. I do well only, I can be sometimes out of breath. I was very lucky that the tumor was found by the CT-SCAN while, I didn't had problems with my lungs and in an early stage. The only problem what good have related to the lung cancer was, I had lost in a few weeks a lot of weight and I had regular hot flushes.
