Imidazole competes with the his-tag for binding to the metal-charged resin and thus is used for elution of the protein from an IMAC column.

How basic buffer pH affects the binding of histidine tagged protein in Ni-NTA column?
If there is low pH, the Histidine residues will be protonated and thus are not binding to Ni2+ resin anymore. Let me know if it's helpful.
