HPB is less about facial expressions and more about their lines. For example, there's Bridget calling for mommy, May screaming "HEEEEELP!", or Chipp saying "Oh. my. GOOOOOOOOD!"

Ah, that does add an extra element to her frustration 🙂
and the fact that baiken is probably the one who taught him the parry in the first place
7:55 HappyChaos' second overdrive refills his Focus meter which he needs to be able to land the shots with his gun. Firing the gun requires both Focus and for the gun to be loaded with bullets, that overdrive lets you burn some super meter to be back to using your gun without having to do both animations seperately.

A lot of these moves are meant to be used in combat as either a buff of some kind, defensive measure, or a fast chunk of damage unlike the Instant Kills from previous game. There’s still some gold in here though like Potemkin’s Heavenly Potemkin Buster or Faust accidentally slamming a wheelchair into everyone’s shin. I do recommend watching a video showcasing everyone’s reaction to getting hit though, very fun.
Ah okay, that makes more sense as to why some of the moves seemed underwhelming if they are more setup moves or combo moves. Thanks for explaining them more to us 🙂

Yup. We may make an exception for this game (though we’ve done music before) but we’ve been told before the music is a good way to get to know the characters better 🙂
The overdrives that don't do nothing are buffs, Happy Chaos's buff basically regenerate's most of his unique meter (it's used to allow him to shoot his gun), the gal with the ball and chain's buff only buffs her minions, the one that changes the minion's mask is a defence, giving them invincibility, and the other is a damage buff (Her gimmick is creating up to 3 minions that she can command to help her fight or defend).
You also missed the newest DLC character, Sin Kiske, the 5 year old half gear half human son of Ky Kiske and Dizzy, you've seen him in Guilty Gear Xrd.
Not really invincibility, but they become pretty durable in comparison to always dying in 1 hit.

1:46 nothing happens on the screen, however there is a mechanic unique to the character that gets auto replenished when this overdrive is used. this mechanic is called concentration and influences what moves the character is able to use as well as how
2:23 this is another overdrive that interacts with a character specific mechanic in the game. the small creatures on screen are minions and they receive buffs from this overdrive that grant improved defense or improved attack depending on which buff the player selects
7:14 Every character has a unique animation when they get hit by this overdrive and it has become something of a tradition that whenever a new character is announced/ released, one of the first questions players ask regarding the new character is "what does it look like when they get hit by the wheelchair?"
7:27 this overdrive utilizes a character unique mechanic that changes what items the character throws out. there's also another version of it that throws out double the number of items

1:16 Testament is not a boy or a girl; they are the Grim Reaper of the series, and as such, do not have a gender. It's always been that way, since the early days of Guilty Gear back in the 90s.
1:45 Happy Chaos' second overdrive refills his meter. You would probably notice that, if the person recording the video you watched didn't take away the in-game HUD.
2:13 Jack-O's second overdrive buffs her servants. She can do it in two different ways; the person recording the video you watched didn't demonstrate this for you.
5:22 Axl has two overdrives; one that stops time, and the other is a flaming scythe attack. But the way the video was recorded makes it look like he only has one overdrive.
6:35 Anji's second overdrive is a counter; it does not do anything if the enemy does not try to strike Anji. The person recording the video you watched didn't demonstrate this for you.
7:17 Faust's second overdrive is completely random. He throws several items at once, and they all do vastly different things. Sometimes that little guy you saw comes out, sometimes several come out; sometimes there's bombs, banana peels, meteors, 70's style afro wigs, etc. The person recording the video you watched could have done that super 50x for you, and it would have been a different blend of items every time. This wasn't demonstrated for you.
7:27 Faust has a third overdrive. The person recording the video you watched didn't demonstrate this for you.

Guilty Gear is a classic anime-esque fighting game from my childhood. It was a lot of fun, especially when you play with your friends. It's like BlazBlue in a way, another fun game. Definitely should check out BlazBlue in the future

Fun thing with Faust, every character has a unique reaction getting hit by the wheelchair. Which is a lot of work. On the cinematic side though. I think they just wanted to have supers more functional than anything. Like in Xrd, those insta kills where big crazy cinematic finishers because if you pull them off, they instantly win the match. In this, that's not the case. And to have the game just stop for a minute every time someone uses one can wear. I think some, like Patinkin Buster are crazy because they hurt. Or maybe they just really like those characters, who knows. It's not really a DLC thing though. Testement is a DLC character and they have a pretty heavy one as far as work load is concerned. Most of these characters are actually launch. I think the DLC was just Happy Chaos, Testement, Goldlewis Dickerson, Beiken, and Bridget.

Small explanation im shure others have allready axplained some or all of this but here i go anyways.
Traditionally the Overdrives are more or less tactical tools instead of over the top cinematics since that niche used to be filled by the Instant Kills, but since Strive dosnt have Instant Kills it might seem a bit lacking in big cinematic supers.
To explain some that may cause confusion:
Happy Chaoses second overdrive is a buff that allows him to fire his gun freely for a short period of time normally he needs two resources, but he only needs one as long as the buff is active.
Nagoryukis second overdrive just looks like a big slash but it has another property, it ends his bloodrage (wich you want to end as quickly as possible).
Nagoriuki has a meter that fills up when he uses 4 of his special moves the fuller the meter is the more powerfull he gets, his attacks become faster, stronger and his sword gets more range. But when the meter is full then Nago enters Bloodrage, in this mode he is at his most powerfull faster, stronger, even more range but it has severe drawbacks...
First entering bloodrage has a long animation that leaves you volnurable. Second you loose access to your specials in Bloodrage (including the teleport dash that he needs for mobility since Nago cant run like the other charakters).
Finally Bloodrage rapidly drains your health to the point that youll be one hit away from death when it ends, its pretty self explanatory why this tradeoff isnt worth it.
The second overdrive works as a strong attack that can be used to shorten the time that Bloodrage is active i call it "Damage Controll"
Also his sword attacks lower the Bloodrage meter so the usual gameplan is to use your specials to the point where youre allmost at bloodrage but never actually entering it, from that point its a balance game from lowering the meter with sword strikes and using specials to keep it as high as possible. If you accidentaly go into bloodrage you use overdrive 2 to go back, ideally youd never enter bloodrage though.
Jack-Os second/thierd Overdrive Buff her Minions, Jack-O can place three Minions on the field wich she can use for various purposes (idk how exactly havent played against many Jack-Os in strive).
The first Buff gives them Armor (in form of the masks) and thus allows them to last longer since they normally die in one hit.
The second Buff makes their attacks Stronger.
Kys second overdrive is a projectile that applys "stun state" to the oponent this basically means that they cant react as fast when hit.
Kys thierd Overdrive "Dragon Install" is also a Buff, but its complicated this is what we call an "Install Super" (named after Sols Dragon Install in the older GG games, he dosnt have the traditionall install in strive, he only goes into his "Dragon Install" during the animation for the Second Overdrive), it changes how Ky plays in a lot of ways but most importantly he gets stronger and several of his moves gain new propertys and or get faster to the point that a lot of moves considered to be unsafe are safe when Ky is in "Dragon Install" mode.
Potempkins first Overdrive is a Barrier that interrupts/ hits enemys on contact and prevents projectiles from reaching pot, its used as a way for pot to safely aproach so that he can get up close to do his potempkin Buster, airgrab or Heavenly Potempkin Buster (Overdrive 2).
Pot also cant Run like Nago, but Pots alternatives are quite limited so he sometimes needs the barrior to get into his preferred range where he can do BIG DAMAGE.
Axls second Overdrive freezes time for a short period of time in wich you a free to attack your oponent and or set up on them.
Fausts first overdrive is just a generic big damage move but everyone in the cast has a unike animation for it.
Fausts second Overdrive tosses a bunch of random items on the stage, this is tied to his Gimmik "Item Toss". Faust has a special move called "Item Toss" that will throw a random item on the stage each one has different effects heres a short list:
Donut: heals whoever gets it.
A banana peel: will make whoever walks over it slip anf thus become defenseless for a brief moment.
Banana: heals whoever collects it but leaves a Banana Peel behind.
Hammer: small Hammer thrown into the air in an arc will bounce of the ground once after falling, very good to interrupt airborne/ incoming attackers.
1000 Ton Weight: Cartoonish weight, thrown into the air in a similar way to the hammer, comes crashing down onto the ground where it causes a shockwave that makes grounded players (faust included) slip up or causes their guard to be brokem.
Little Faust: small Voodoo esque doll that patrolls the screen will attack Fausts oponent upon contact (be that them walking arround or an attack),stays on the screen for a small period of time or untill it attacks.
Horn: whoever walks over it summons a small army of little fausts that will charge across the ground and attack the other player upon contakt.
Bomb: a cartoonish Bomb that hits everyone in the range of its ensueing explosion, can be bounced back and forth for the worlds most deadly game of volleyball, the explosion also sets things on fire.
Meteor: a Meteor that comes crashing down on the oponent does a lot of damage or breaks guard (also sets things on fire).
Finally the Afro: faust throws a wig of a luscious Afro onto the stage whoever comes in contakt with it now has an Afro on their head that extends their hurtbox (the part that can be hit to do damage) the Afro can also be set on fire by certain moves wich will cause it to explode, if Faust wears the Afro then his "Headthrow" special becomes enhanced as the headbomb is now bigger and bounces towards the oponent a bit.
Faust can use these items in various ways and due to his other moves he has ways to benefit from each of them or to avoid them. His Second overdrive simply throws five items at once.
Theres also a version that throws ten but its not worth it, the input is annoying and using up two entire tension bars (super meter) isnt worth it, unless you want to flex on the other player.
Theres also a lot of Overdrives that are "Reversal Supers" they apply invincibility to the user during their animation wich means that they can overwrite whatever move the oponent is doing (while also doing a lot of Damage), some examples for these:
Testaments second overdrive with the big blood jaw, Mays Second Overdrive Where she rides the Orca, Ramlethals Second Overdrive where she crosses her swords, I-Nos second Overdrive where her hat makes an explosion and a couple more.
Theres also a couple of Command Grab Supers that cant be blocked, some examples: sols second overdrive (Dragon Install), Jack-Os first Overdrive (Forever Elysion Driver) and of course Potempkins second Overdrive (Heavenly Potempkin Buster) wich is actually an airgrab meaning it only works on airborne oponents.
something to take notes: Some super don't do anything but change something about the character.
Some characters got ressource, for example and a super can gave the character his ressource back. Or make them infinite for a set time.
Some super transform the character.
Those are called "install super".
The flashiest gave a character a new look. But most just add an aura. Or just nothing... Cause... you know, it's a new character to animate and rigg and model if you do a complete transformation.
Potemkin’s is king
Heavenly Potemkin Buster is 11/10 without question, even though Bridgett ruined it by making you more concerned for her than in awe of being taken to heaven before being cast back down to the earth.

5:22 ive never been outside of england in 21 years since my birth and something about his accent really annoys me because it sounds like an imitation but extremely realistic at the same time and i cant tell what it is lmao
Most of the "companion characters" use the companions in regular moves and special attacks, only Giovanna, Jack-O and Zato-1 rely on their companions exclusively or in combo during Overdrive. Point of fact, Zato actually depends on his buddy Eddie for the majority of his spacing and mix up attacks and if Eddie is taken out of the fight, Zato is in serious trouble until Eddie comes back because of his seriously limited move list without him.
In most high level games you won't actually see much use of overdrives, they're too costly or simply don't have enough bang for buck to spend on in the heat of a high level match. Most times they're just used for flash or to style on an opponent of lesser experience or skill, with a couple of exceptions (Potemkin, Leo, Axl)

You should check all Faust's moves on all the characters, the faces they make are painfully funny... but I recommend you wait once all the DLC are finished.

Haven’t delved too deep into Guilty Gear, but it’s definitely a wild ride aesthetically throughout.
And there’s also another game their company made called “Blazblue”. (Pronounced like “blaze-blue”) Another anime-esque fighting game that has it’s own following. Hopefully you’ll give it a look 1 day.

You should watch pokken tournament dx all the super moves. They are insane. Its a pokemon fighting game made by the tekken producer. The super moves are called burst moves. Its really cool. Be sure to add the dlc characters aswell

I'd love to see a reaction to Guilty Gear XX Plus R's Overdrive and Instakill
The fandom's split on Strive for that very reason of having less cinematic moves, shorter combos, fewer characters & removed mechanics compared to other titles in the series. Though it is considered a good recommendation for newcomers
If you're interest in the story, a youtuber called Staiver as made a video that explains the story in 15 minutes. Not very accurate but gives the general idea.
Woolieversus has a much more in depth and honestly very well made series on the lore but in total in comes out to I believe a little over 4 hours across 7 parts so it’s better to watch it bit by bit to at least try to retain some of it by the end

Guilty gear looks amazing, but a lot of its supers are more gameplay focused(especially for the newer characters).
They did say that they were going to add the super over the top cinematic finishers eventually, but like I said this game looks amazing so I imagine they aren't in any rush to add those in.
We look forward to when they do add them in. 🙂

There are no big super flashy moves in Guilty gear strive. The old guilty gear games have one with one big flashy move. that’s why I like the old ones better. But the new one does look really pretty.

@@DissedRedEngie *Bridget (I gotchu homie haha). Yeah she's canonically a transwoman now in Strive but BEFORE Bridget identified as male who dressed as a woman which is actually a big part of her story.
Hopefully this won't spoil things for people; but here are the histories of the two mentioned characters of this line:
Testament was a famous soldier's son who died during the time of the Crusades, then became the gear who they are now, and from the original (GG) till XX AC+R; they were referred to as male. It wasn't till they were pressumed dead in a Forest fire, and found by the same elderly couple that raised Dizzy in GG X originally, that: in accepting that they weren't the Monster they thought they were after events of GG: they became what they are now, and go out in search of other's dealing with similar issues to help be the voice of reason.
Bridget started sadly as a case of misfortune; as they were forced to live like a girl all for their family to avoid a curse... In which during their first appearance through AC+R, they are even quick to remind characters they were Male. It isn't until Strive they finally accept and affirm who they are, as they are.
I love how this Game in the series is more so about Closure with these characters in regards to their biggest obsticles they have all had to overcome.

What's more, Testament's English voice actor is a man, yet his/her/their Japanese voice actress is a woman. So that androgyny is a wholly intentional part of the character. 🤔

Personally even though I'm a fan of the Guilty Gear series...I have no interest in Strive unless they add Instant Kills into the game as that was the defining feature of the series since game one..this is the first mainline Guilty Gear fighting game to NOT have them and it honestly kills my interest in playing it.
