    This video led me to hours of catch-up reading.
    I'm 67. In school, I took all the 'advanced' or 'honors' classes in biology and zoology. My grades were good, as with any subject that interested me.
    But there were then only three Kingdoms: plant, animal, and protist. The entire classification system has been rewritten.
    Maybe a cautionary tale for young folks studying now. It's not cast in stone folks, and will always be subject to revision when new tools and information become available.

In other words some how the fish break the covalent bonds in water to get oxygen. I explained to them that actually the oxygen is just dissolved in the water.

    I understand that almost everyone does this as it is pretty common these days and not really a big deal, but, zō-ology (more like toe) instead of zoo-ology.
    It just bothers me, like when people use homogenous (archaic biology term) instead of homogeneous (scientific term to describe uniform mixtures). Also, like how most people will completely butcher tinnitus.
    Keep up the good work though, please don’t take this as hate on the video.

    • @SmittyWerbenJagermannJensen
      @SmittyWerbenJagermannJensen 3 года назад +1

      @@billballinger5622 unfortunately, it isn’t. It’s zō-ˈä-lə-jē. Even when you reference the root word, it has a long ō sound.
      Doesn’t mean people don’t pronounce it zoo-ology, that’s just the common usage because people see the two o’s, think oh zoo like the place that has animals, and use the zoo pronunciation. Ignoring that if it were zoo, it would have 3 o’s.
      Please, don’t take my word for it, the Merriam-Webster website let’s you hear pronunciations of words.
      On the other hand, Google translate will give the zoo-ology pronunciation, because it has become common everyday usage for the term.
      For reference, the word zoological is literally pronounced zō-ə-ˈlä-ji-kəl.

    • @SmittyWerbenJagermannJensen
      @SmittyWerbenJagermannJensen 3 года назад

      @@billballinger5622 now, I’m not insisting you change pronunciation. You can use whichever you please.

    • @sciencenerd7639
      @sciencenerd7639 3 года назад

      Google "pronunciation zoology", select American pronunciation, see what you get.
      It is perfectly fine for the first o to make the sound "oo" and the second o to make the sound "ah". There are much weirder vowel inconsistencies than that in English, such as how the word "women" has the o making the ih sound. Both pronunciations are good.

    • @SmittyWerbenJagermannJensen
      @SmittyWerbenJagermannJensen 3 года назад

      @@sciencenerd7639 look, it’s a common mispronunciation. That’s all I was pointing out.
      Also, please read what I wrote, I acknowledged the google translate pronunciation as well as how a dictionary uses the actual pronunciation. The zoo pronunciation is simply a mispronunciation that has become commonplace.
      I work in the medical field, I know actual physicians, nurses, PAs, NPs, EMTs, you name it who will insist the medical term “tinnitus” has a long i sound in it, making it sound like tin-eye-tis. Most English speakers pronounce it that way, but your audiologist will politely point out (correctly) that it is actually pronounced ti-nə-təs.
      Lastly, I’m not trying to tell you how to pronounce it, you can do what you please. But don’t get on here and just make up reasons why the pronunciation is correct/acceptable. It’s only accepted in common usage because most people pronounce it that way.
      Go to any dictionary, look for the words zoologist or zoological or zoogeography. You’ll see it uses the long ō pronunciation because that is the correct one. I’ll do you one better, look up the word on RUclips even.
      Much like how homogenous is incorrect, but is commonly used everyday by English speakers. The correct word is homogeneous.

    I always thought that the first ‘o’ in zoology is long because this is a compound word. Everyone knows that ‘ology’ means ‘study of,’ like in ‘geology’ or even ‘theology.’ (Note how the ‘e’ in both words is long ‘ee’ sound and not the ‘eh’ sound of a short ‘e.’)
    The critical part is ‘zoe’ the Ancient Greek word for life (and a girls’ name). I have never heard ‘Zoe’ pronounced with a short ‘o’ or the ‘oo’ sound like in ‘too.’ So when you add ‘zoe’ to ‘ology,’ shouldn’t it be pronounced ‘zoh ahlogee,’ not ‘zu ahlogee?’
    In Spanish, what Americans call ‘zoology’ is called zoológia, with the long ‘o.’ Russian has ‘Зоология,’ again with a long ‘o.’ Since we are not studying zoos, but life, I am of the opinion that we should pronounce it with the long ‘o.’
    I realize that language changes over time, and at least Americans tend to mispronounce this word so consistently that the dictionary now shows both ways to pronounce the word. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @Lantrix
      @Lantrix 2 года назад

      I’ve always heard this word pronounced as Zo - Ology. Not Zoo - Ology. If it was the way it’s commonly pronounced in America wouldn’t it have three ooo In the spelling?
      Wikipedia (US English) has the IPA pronunciation as Zoology (/zoʊˈɒlədʒi/). After the initial Z sound there is oʊ which the sound as in the middle of ‘Goat’. Then the ɒ as in the o in ‘Lot’ and the l as in the first sound of ‘Lie’.
      Wikipedia therefore has the pronunciation as Zo Ology. Which is how I’ve always heard it and thus made me not get why Dave was pronouncing this way.
      This aside, great video on what is Zoology.

    Hey professor Dave I hope you see my message I would love it if you can make a video about the psyche model of magic that says certain parts of magic are backed by science. An instance someone's Beauty care routine could be considered a glamour spell and inner Alchemy the action of manipulating the subconscious to get 1 or various changes of character like being more confident being more forward or being more aggressive this can be achieved with psychodrama and there are a lot of other elements this seems scientific for instance the belief in a god is actually the belief in an archetype the archetype is pretty much like a mask that your subconscious can wear and reveal knowledge to you. I have a ton of other examples of this suppose scientific method of doing magic

      @@ProfessorDaveExplains wait so you don't believe that psychodrama exists and archetypes and herbalism and illusion magic like Criss Angel and David Blaine type Magic and what about dark psychology and understanding body language facial expressions micro-expressions tone of voice usage of language and the Art of influence and manipulation from what I've read all of these things can affect your reality and it's all based on actual science like psychodrama is currently used by psychotherapists... or is it that you disagree with the label Magic

      You just named like 18 totally different things as though they are all the same thing.

      @@ProfessorDaveExplains no I names 18 completely different things and said that the totality of knowing all these things can be considered magic two people that practice the Psych model of magic understanding how to create Illusions can give you the ability of looking Supernatural understanding plants their usages and how to extract isolate and concentrate their elements can be used to create remedies and cosmetics Understanding Psychology body language facial expressions micro-expressions usage of language tone of voice understanding how to influence how to be persuasive and manipulation can create an illusion that you are an empath there's a lot more within the psychology model of magic but basically what I'm saying is that if you learn all of these talents you can give off the illusion of being magical now revealing the secrets would demystify the whole thing but if you kept the secrets the secret then you would see spiritual enlightened or Supernatural I'm not saying that these judgments are correct I'm just saying that this model of of magic exist

    Maybe I'll finally get to learn if a sandwich is an animal.
    Sand - Latin for it's rough and gets everywhere
    Wich - a practitioner of every day magic, like how did you slice that deli meat so thin.
    The bread eats the meat and condiments so sandwiches are heterotrophic.
    The bread has air holes in it so it's definitely respirating.
    So thanks Prof Dave, sandwich is an animal!

    So what they're evolutionarily close, sponges don't have a nervous system, cnidaria do, hence the cut-off is at jellyfish, if that irritates you just know that all organisms that aren't fungi, animals, or plants are called protists irrespective of how genetically far from each other they are.

    I kinda think categorising things as animals even though they lost a lot of characteristics that would make them animals in the first place is erroneous. If an animal evolved somehow into a plant one day then we should just be ready to call it that. It seems so stiff

      Cladistics and classification of organisms is not anymore solely based upon phenotypic characterietics, but genetic ancestry. As such, it matters not how much a species has changed, and nothing can alter its lineage.
