    Hey from someone who has played baseball his whole life i feel like I would let you in on some things. Mike Trout is probably the best 5 tool player in a long time. A 5 tool player is someone who can run, field, throw, hit, and then hit for power exceptionally well. Another aspect of hitting that mike trout does so well is that he hits It all around the field. A lot of times players can’t really hit the ball well the opposite way (which in this case is right field for trout because he is a right handed hitter), but Trout can hit the ball all over the field for power exceptionally well. He is one of the best all around players the game has ever seen. And when the announcer said he hit for the cycle, that means in one game he hit a single, double, triple, and home run. A single being when you hit It and get to first base, double being second base, and triple being third base, then you obviously know what a home run is, but cycles are extremely rare and happen only a handful of games in the season where each team plays 162 games.

    Answering all questions and comments in vid: In baseball, there are 8 different field positions excluding the pitcher. There's first, second, third, shortstop (between 2nd and 3rd), and three outfield positions. That extra spot in the lineup for the 9th hitter is called the designated hitter, or DH, and is only used purely for hitting purposes, typically for power. If the player is versatile enough, there are no limits as to where a player can be placed on the field. It's very common to see some middle infielders convert to the outfield. Sometimes there are catchers that go to 3rd or 1st...and in rare cases, even a random player can become a pitcher
    ~~~~
    That small hit at the beginning is called a bunt. It's a play typically used to sacrifice yourself as an out to help move a runner on base into scoring position
    ~~~~
    For the average player, hitting about 25-30 is already a very solid amount. The pure sluggers of the league, Trout included, are capable of hitting 40+ routinely
    ~~~~
    Trout is arguably the best low ball hitter in the league. That's where plenty of his home runs come from
    ~~~~
    Yep. Solo HR is just as it sounds. Nothing special about the naming until a HR is hit with all bases filled; then it's called a grand slam
    ~~~~
    Very rarely is a batter also a pitcher. Most famous person to do is Babe Ruth who is a legendary figure. That's why his teammate, Shohei Ohtani, who both pitches and bats, is causing such a firestorm
      To add to that, if you do look that up, Mr Kiwi Kicker, the nationals had to come back from having the second worst record in the majors to make the post season, had to win 5 elimination games (all from behind) and ultimately defeated a team that was a fine tuned, well oiled machine, crafted specifically to win championships with a little help from blatant cheating.
      The Nationals' only peers in terms of "WTF, how?" are the 1914 Boston Braves. If a season of this level of craziness only comes once every 105 years, I'm super glad I picked last year as the year I would take on the mildly crazy task of watching or listening to every single one of the Nationals 162 games
    One of the interesting things about baseball is that every field is different. The infield with the bases, pitcher’s mound and home plate are all the same with specified distances between each point. The outfields are different, often based on the land they had to work with. A short outfield can be remedied by a higher wall and the distances to the outfield walls are rarely symmetrical.
    Certain ballparks are known as hitters parks as it’s easier to hit home runs. Another factor is in Denver because of the high altitude, balls carry farther because of the thin air.
    Angel Stadium is about 15 minutes from my home. As such my family is Angel fans and not Dodger fans. We had season tickets for Angels games for years and without a doubt, Mike Trout has been the most amazing player to watch in the entire league. He can hit (especially low in the zone), run fast, and catch like no other. He's a true centerfielder. He's also really good off the field and is a good family man who genuinely interacts with fans. Oh, and when the announcer says "light that baby up", he is referring to the Big "A" that sits outside the stadium that lights up when the team wins. The Angels just started camp games this week. THANK GOD!
    Mike Trout plays centerfield, which is actually a pretty difficult position to play (not the hardest, like catcher, pitcher, or shortstop), and generally the more difficult a position, the more teams are willing to let your bat be a little weak and underwhelming.
    Mike Trout's bat is insane, hitting dingers left and right, slugging for power, and walking a bunch, that's what makes him great.
    The ultimate compliment for a fielding player (not a pitcher) in baseball is to call them a five tool player. The five tools:
    Hit for power
    Hit for average (frequency of hits)
    Baserunning
    Fielding
    Throwing
    Mike Trout is a five tool player.
    Babe Ruth is the best example of an excellent pitcher who couod hit. He hit so well that he got moved to the outfield, so no one knows how good a pitcher he could have been.
    Ftr: 30hr is a respectable power season. 40 is good. 61 is the pre-steroid record for a 162 game season. 74 is the Barry Bonds number. 500 is a great career. That's aknost 17 years at 30 per year.
    RBI are closer than HR to scoring goals in football. 100 in 162 is the standard benchmark for a productive run producer.
    You'll be shocked how difficult it is to get clean contact if you ever go into a batting cage and try to hit a ball that's going even 70 miles an hour. Most commercial batting cages don't even have machines that go over 85. I do encourage you to try though.
    Hitting a baseball is one of those things that is even harder to do than it looks.
    You might not have caught it, but the clip at around 6:00 was Trout hitting for the cycle. A cycle is when a player hits a single, double, triple, and a home run all in a single game. Super super rare. Might be one or two in a season across the MLB. Sometimes none, pretty cool accomplishment.
    Trout is fascinating because he does everything well at such a high level... lots of players do one thing (hitting, fielding, base running, etc) very well, the rare ones do a couple things very well, Trout does literally everything at a level better than almost everyone in baseball... he's a true rarity
    And to answer your questions: most guys play just one position but will have some experience and flexibility playing similar... so guys in centerfield (like trout) can also do left and right field (all in the outfield) and a guy who plays shortstop can also do 2nd and 3rd base probably... the notable exceptions are pitcher and catcher... catcher (behind the plate with all the gear) is such a weird position that guys usually only play catcher and focus on it heavily (so they are not as good at hitting as your standard outfielder)... pitchers usually are only pitchers (trout's teammate shohei ohtani is the big exception) and they focus on only pitching... so like you said for cricket: good bowlers are often not good batsmen... that's how it is for pitchers but to the extreme (pitchers are usually terrible batters)... but nobody is forced to stay at a position... in theory someone could play all 9 positions in one game (but that wouldn't be very good allocation of resources)
    Recommendation for a player to watch is Barry Bonds... on numbers alone: Barry Bonds is the best player in baseball history and it isn't close but he comes with heavy suspicion of steroid usage (never actually failed a test but has been implicated in sales in the past and the body difference from 1986 Bonds to 2001 Bonds is remarkable)
    The context is crucial in truly appreciating a lot of the stuff in this video. Here's what I remember:
    3:30 his first HR ever was a clutch one. His team had a slim 1 run lead and he hit it with 2 men on giving them a 4 run lead. For a rookie that's impressive.
    4:51 this is not only him robbing a HR, but the guy on base was so sure nobody could catch it, that he ran. Trout catching it then set up a double play (2 outs from one batter), cuz that guy really thought nobody could reach it.
    5:21 this is Trout very early in his career hitting his 30TH home run. It is a marvel when players hit 40. And national sports news when some hit 50 (quite rare). So for a fresh player to hit 30 that early in his career, was special.
    5:40 answering your question...most players hover around 20-25. The good seasoned players hit 30. The MVPs hit 40.
    5:51 this HR was an insane display of Trout's raw power. To go down and "golf" a pitch like that and hit it far is impressive. To hit a HR with it, even more. To hit a LONG HR with it? That's special. Only a few players in the league can do it.
    6:05 in addition to golfing that HR, it completed Trout hitting for "the cycle," which is he got a single (1-base hit), double (2-base hit), TRIPLE (3-base hit) and HR all in the same game. It's a pretty rare feat and happens 3-4 times in the entire league all season. Not to mention he did that at 21 YEARS OLD. Which is crazy in itself.
    6:20 was a big moment because his team was down 2 runs with only 3 outs left in the game (pretty tough to comeback from statistically). But he came up in a clutch moment with 2 men on base and with one swing of the bat not only tied the game but won it with a game-winning comeback 3 Run HR.
    7:03 this is An example of a triple. Requires a hard hit ball and lots of speed. 3 bases.
    8:00 this is a big HR because the game had no score all game. (Result of a good pitching matchup). And he came up and won the game by himself. He also lead THE ENTIRE MLB in Home runs with 27 at that point. He was still so young too.
    8:30 this one is in the first inning of the All-Star game against the voted best pitcher in the game (Zack Greinke) from MY team the LA Dodgers and Trout just came up and took him deep right off the bat. A testament to how dangerous he was even against the best pitchers.
    9:15 this was Trout's 32ND Home Run that season and his 200th in his career and for still such a young player those are pretty good numbers.
    9:47 this was incredibly clutch because his team only had a 1 run lead late in the game and he single handedly prevented the other team from tying the game. Huge play.
    11:00 hitting 30 Home runs consistently in the MLB is a tough feat. And he STILL hits 30 even today.
      A Home Run is more like (as I understand it) scoring 35+ points in a Cricket game. It happens very uncommonly, just not for every player, every game. Great players might be able to make it happen in a game, but it's not something you expect every player to do in every game.
      A "Grand Slam" is hitting a home run when the "based are loaded" (meaning that a player occupies each base). This Home Run scores a total of 4 points ("runs"). One for the batter, and one more for each of the 3 occupied bases.
    Here's how the positions work. So you're right that there's pitchers and hitters. But pitchers (for the most part) only focus on pitching, and hitters only focus on hitting and playing defense. Some pitchers (like Madison Bumgarner) are pretty decent at hitting, but pitchers still only ever hit if they are pitching at that time in the game. There's only one current "position player" (a player that is not a pitcher) who also pitches, and that is Mike Trout's teammate Shohei Ohtani who pitches and plays outfield. It's super rare that you have a 2-way player that does both. Rest of the positions go like this:
    Catcher - very important defensive position who must communicate with pitchers on how to pitch to batters. Basically regulates the game defensively with the pitcher. Not a lot of great hitting catchers at the moment because it is more of a defensive-focused position.
    Pitcher - controls the tempo of the game. I think you have an understanding of what they do. There's basically starting pitchers and relief pitchers. Starters "start" the game from the beginning and are often expected to pitch around at least half of the game before a "relief" pitcher(s) comes in to finish. Starters traditionally pitch once every 5 days because they need more time for their arms to rest since they pitch most of the game. Relievers can pitch multiple nights in a row since they can pitch as little or as long as they are needed. There's also "closers" who are pitchers that specialize in protecting a close lead at the end of games, usually only pitching 1 or 2 innings at a time.
    1st base - a more offensive focused position. If you have a guy who is a fantastic hitter but isn't very athletic this is usually where you'd put him, because generally you can get by without being great defensively at this position. Still, there's tons of great defensive 1st basemen who are really crafty and skillful, just not super athletic. They mainly receive throws from infielders who are trying to get hitters out, but sometimes throws aren't always on target so these guys need to be able to catch everything that comes in their direction (another reason they're often big guys, since they make bigger targets which makes throws easier for infielders).
    2nd base/shortstop - similar positions where you need to be quick and athletic defensively. These guys are usually great athletes and must be able to work well together. They're pretty interchangeable. 2nd basemen can play shortstop and vice versa but usually the better defender will play shortstop.
    3rd base - kind of a mixture of the other infield positions. Really tough but important position defensively. Similar to short/2nd base but balls can be hit extremely hard towards 3rd base, requiring very quick reactions. Lots of 3rd basemen have the skill to play 2nd or short but might not have the athleticism or may be too big. A lot can can also play 1st base if needed but it's not that common.
    Outfield - kind of a mixed bag. Centerfield is usually your fastest player because they need to chase down everything in the outfield. Left or right field don't need to be as athletic, but they generally need to be savvy and have strong throwing arms. It's possible for guys to play both infield and outfield but not really that common. Most players have the skill to play different positions but you also want to keep players where they are at their best. If you have a good shortstop who is even better at 3rd base but you also have a good 3rd baseman who isn't as good as shortstop, then you keep them where they're at because you want to maximize what you get out of both. Same goes for outfield. A lot of the best hitters are outfielders, including Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, Cody Bellinger, and Christian Yelich, all of whom have won MVPs in the past few years.
    That's basically the gist of it. I could go on and on in more detail but this was already pretty long-winded and I tried to simplify it as much as possible. Hope this helps you or anyone who might not fully understand how the positions work.
    The out fielders are the ones in the grass. You can switch position at any time. But in the MLB the players play one position only. But some a few play deferent position at deferent time in there playing time. These are so good they are expert in mainly one position. Like a pitcher you have your starter, reliever short and long. And a closer.
    So in the American League of the MLB there is a Designated Hitter or a DH. They are typically your best hitter,and doesn't play in the field. But in the National League the Pitcher hits instead of having a DH. Depending in what league the home team is either American or National they go by their hitting rules.     To answer some questions: players usually have one defensive position they play regularly, but can play multiple positions if needed. For example, Mike Trout could play anywhere in the outfield but because of his speed he plays Center Field (CF) as it requires a player to cover the most territory. Players can switch positions within a game. In fact, a player could play all 9 positions (including pitcher) in a game, and it has happened. However, if you are taken out of the field or replaced when you're supposed to hit (called pinch-hitting), you cannot come back in.
    In the long term, players sometimes switch positions as they age and lose athleticism. Power hitters especially often switch from the outfield to First Base (1B) or Designated Hitter (DH) as they require much less mobility. A shortstop (SS) might move to third base (3B) which requires less lateral range, and a catcher (C) might move to 1B because catching is hell on your knees.
    The infield positions tend to be more specialized than the outfield partially because being left or right handed gives you a big advantage depending on which side of second base you're on.First and Second basemen tend to lefties and Shortshops and Third Basemen tend to be righties.
    Pitchers are required to hit in the National League but not the American League who created the DH in 1973. However, pitchers are the most specialized position, and like cricket, tend to be poor hitters. Pitchers almost never play in the field otherwise. However, Shohei Ohtani, a Japanese pitcher, came over to the US recently and even though he plays in the AL (on the Angels), he is such a good hitter that he is also their DH even on days when he's not pitching.
    The speed you're seeing on the graphics is the speed of the pitch. Sometimes you'll also see how fast the ball came off the bat as well. Similar to how in cricket there are fast bowlers and spin bowlers, in baseball there are power pitchers who can throw 95-100mph and control pitchers who throw a mix of pitches between 70-90MPH. The best pitchers can do both.
    • @RollzRoyce199
      @RollzRoyce199 4 года назад
      Also, the benchmark for a good power hitter is 30 Home runs (HR) in a season. The league leader tends to hit 40-50. The single season record is 73 by Barry Bonds in 2001, but he was on crazy amounts of steroids. The record for a player not on drugs is 61 by Roger Maris in 1961 (and before him 60 by Babe Ruth in 1927 in 8 fewer games). For a career, 500 HR generally means you'll make the Hall of Fame (tho again, this has changed somewhat due to all the guys who used steroids from the 1980s-2000s.)
      Baseball is the most stat-heavy sport in America, so gaining some familiarity with them will help you understand a lot more of what you're seeing and put how good players are into context since a player's value comes from consistency over the course of a long season rather than a few spectacular plays.
    Pitchers are mostly just good at pitching, in the American League, the pitcher does not hit at all, there is a Designated Hitter (DH) in place of him in the lineup, in the National League the pitcher must hit, although this year and possibly going forward there is going to be a DH in both leagues, as for hitters (position players-anyone that is not a pitcher) most have a specialized position but some guys are good at playing multiple positions, these guys are called utility players, if you are not good enough of a hitter to be a starter, a lot of guys are still valuable because they can play multiple positions due to injury or rest
    In major league baseball, there are two leagues. The American League and the National League. The American League has a designated hitter (DH) position where that player bats for the pitcher. In the National League, the pitchers have to bat. Usually, players are position players or pitchers. Just recently we have started to see a few guys that are becoming both pitchers and hitters. Babe Ruth back in the 1920's started as pitcher, but then slowly became just a hitter. He became one of the best of all time. A lot of teams like to have a "Utility" type of player that can play multiple positions because that allows flexibility for giving your normal players days off and making other substitutions throughout the game.
    • @travisrich3284
      @travisrich3284 4 года назад
      There are 8 positions on the field at a time besides the pitcher. Usually, a team will have 12 total position players on the roster at a time. So, 8 starters, 1 backup catcher, and 3 usually a backup infielder and a backup outfielder. If you are a guy that can play both, you have more value and more likelihood to make a roster.
    There is one player in today's game who is a true 2-way player, meaning he both hits and pitches regularly. His name is Shohei Ohtani, and I'd highly recommend checking out some of his highlights. He can throw 100 mph on the mound, and also hit monster home runs. Otherwise (with small exceptions) pitching is by far the most specialized position -- on a 26-man roster, usually teams carry 12-13 pitchers at a time.
    Trout is what we call a true "5-tool" baseball player. That means (1) he hits for a good batting average, (2) he hits with power (home runs), (3) he has great speed, (4) he uses his glove very well (defensively), (5) he has a great throwing arm. A complete player in the truest sense. People compare him to Mickey Mantle, a name you might know. Some believe Mick was the best all around player in history.
    The average of home runs isnt really averaged. Many great batters rarely get homeruns, preferring to bunt and place loopers, advancing runners and allowing stolen bases. Trout hits an almost obscene amount of Homer's, but can place the ball, too. Almost in a league of his own. As an example check out Allen Trammel from the Detroit Tigers. He could hit homeruns, and did, but wasnt clean up cause his ability to hit the ball where he wanted and his decent speed meant he was better used to advance runners every at bat rather than swinging for the fences everytime and flying out or striking out in the effort. For pitchers, check out Justin Verlander, Nolan Ryan, and Roger Clemens.
    To answer some questions you asked. There are players who play multiple positions. They are called utility players. But most players tend to focus on one position. Pitchers typically suck at hitting and usually a guarantee out when they bat. Yes the numbers on the wall indicate in feet the distance. Each field is unique in both distance and height of outfield walls. Also, you were correct in the pitch speed. Different speeds will tell you the type of pitch that is thrown. 90 plus is a fastball. 80s is a changeup which is designed to throw off the hitter and of course you have breaking balls which will curve or slide and those tend to be in the high 70s. An average good player will hit 30 to 40 homeruns a season (which is 162 games) anything over 40 is awesome. The most ever hit in a single season is 73 by Barry Bonds. You need to realize for point of reference that baseball is a sport where you can hit 3 out of 10 and that would be considered hall of fame material. That's how difficult it is to get a base hit let alone a homerun. The 2020 season didn't start before the virus they were still in spring training. The season is set to start on July 22 or 23. Suppose to be only a 60 game season and they doing alot of experimenting with rules during this shorten season.
Also you mentioned "the outfield" the outfield is a generalized term given to 3 different positions, left field,center field and right field, allin the outfield. Mike Trout at this stage in his career still plays centerfielder. Maybe next video ill explain the DesignAted Hitter. Cheers
    as far as defence goes, most pitchers are just pitchers. theyre in the bullpen and some types of pitchers dont play every game. theres lots of different types of pitchers that specialize in when in a game they would pitch and what types of pitches they throw.
    It seems like a lot of the best runners play field positions, so their running naturally affects them on offense too. so when fielders can hit too they can be big impact players. like trout, ken griffey was a center fielder who could run&catch, and bat too.
    a lot of my favorite players have been shortstops (they play between 2nd and 3rd base, slightly out of the diamond). whenever a shortstop is in the play something exciting is always going on. they tend to be really athletic (high jumps) and have fast reactions to make plays.
    He is a Center fielder but over the course of a game he could THEORETICALLY play every position besides a Designated Hitter. That said he probably will not leave the outfield on defense, he is really good as you can see. Center field on defense is TYPICALLY your fastest runner or your hardest thrower/best fielder. And average Home Runs for a strong batter is I'd say between 27 and 35.
    About HR, you can bet that almost all of the players getting MVP votes have 30 HR or more that year. So that's a very nice number. Even 20 is respectable. 40 is really really good, and 50 is kind of amazing. The record was 61 until 1998, and still would be 70 except Barry Bonds took lots of drugs. Yes, I know McGwire took precursers, but I will point out that those were unregulated at the time. That's at least a little different.
  • @ixIRISHLEGENDxi
    the 30th home run was special because he also had 30 steals. Most players dont have a combination of speed and power like that.
    The angled homerun completed the cycle. So he had at least 4 hits, one each of a single, double, triple, and homerun. Fairly uncommon.
    30 is a good number nowadays for a power hitter. My favorite team has not had an individual hit 30 homers since 2004.
    Most players dont pitch and hit. Your either a position player who hits, or a pitcher.
  • @grantdowling8550
    @grantdowling8550 4 года назад
    The rules allow players to play any position at any time. But once you pitch and are taken out of the game, you may not pitch the rest of the game. You could move pitchers to any position in the field if you wanted to, but you rarely see that. They’re not depended on for their hitting.
    If you want to see players who can hit AND pitch well, you should start with Shohei Ohtani. Babe Ruth did it in the early days of his career with the Red Sox. There are a good number of other players who do too, but again, still rare.
    To answer some of the general baseball questions you had throughout the video, hopefully this will help you out at least a little bit.
    Players typically play one position, there are players that are called “utility players” who are capable of playing multiple positions, but typically they aren’t as consistent as some of the superstars in the game.
    As far as pitchers go, their only position is pitching. Not only is pitching such a fine technique that it requires all of their time and practice, it also puts a lot of strain on their arm, so when they aren’t pitching they’re resting their arm.
    Yes, the numbers on the wall is how many feet you would have to hit the ball to hit a homerun (the Toronto Bluejays have meters and feet on their walls)
    Yes, the speed shown on the screen is the speed of the pitch. Exit velocity is also shown from time to time, especially on homeruns. This tells you the speed of the ball when it comes off of the hitters bat.
    I hope this helped you out at least a little bit, please let me know if you have any other questions. Baseball truly is a great game and I think you’ll enjoy it a lot when you know more about what is going on. Also, check out Ronald Acuña Jr for me...
      I forgot to mention that there are two leagues within the MLB. The American League (AL) and the National League (NL). (Think AFC and NFC). Baseball hitting lineups are 9 players total. If the home team is from the NL, then the pitcher counts as one of the teams batters in the lineup, so they have to go to the plate to bat when it is their turn. If the home team is in the American League, the teams will use what is called a designated hitter (DH). This means that instead of the pitcher going to bat for himself, there is a player who will go to the plate for him. However, the DH does not play in the field throughout the game, he only hits for the pitcher.
    Mike Trout is unquestionably the best all around player in baseball today. Pitchers are really categorized differently and they have their own award, the Cy Young award; technically, a pitcher can, and on occasion has, one both the league Cy Young and MVP awards simultaneously. However, only pitchers can win the Cy Young. Moreover, most pitchers don't hit the ball very well and are usually the last person in the lineup, because they have the worst batting average. (Note: There are two leagues: the National and the American). The American league revised its rules to allow for a "designated hitter" to hit in place of the pitcher and this hitter typically hits higher up in the line up). There is only one pitcher in the game today who can excel both as a pitcher and as a hitter and that's Shohei Ohtani, who also happens to be Mike Trout's team mate on the Angels. He has been called the "Japanese Babe Ruth," because 1) he's from Japan and 2) he's the first player since Babe Ruth 100 years ago who could excel at both positions. Ruth could have made the Hall of Fame as a pitcher, but they wanted his bat in the line up more often so they moved him to the outfield. In the case of Otani, because of the designated hitter rule (not around in Ruth's day), Otani is able to hit in American League games on days when he's not pitching. He also throws right, but bats left, which helps him in his dual role.
