@@SalimKhan-gk1fh have you been paying attention at all? They are proclaimed as legal tender. They can be declined in shops, as ownership of the goods is transferred AFTER payment, so they have a right to accept or not accept. However, in situations such as a restaurant or fuel station, ownership of the goods is transferred upon receipt of the fuel or food/drink, so at this point you owe a debt. This is where there’s a loophole, as you might call it (but it isn’t one, as they are legal tender (check with the royal mint)), as when you owe somebody a debt, you may pay it with any means, so long as it is legal tender. So if the person owed the debt officially refuses to accept the coins “the legal tender payment”, the debt is now nullified, as you have made a reasonable attempt to pay (by offering legal tender).
What Julian does, which is extra clever, is he passes the coin/s to them. At which point they have accepted the payment, so by handing it back (on camera) and stating they are refusing to accept the payment, proves beyond a reasonable doubt, that Julian made a reasonable attempt to pay. He also never takes the coins when they are placed back on to the counter. So he can’t be shown to be acting dishonestly or disingenuously.
If you’re going to try and correct someone and assert some knowledge or perceived knowledge should I say, at least do some research first to avoid looking stupid.

@@julianchamberlain5399 Absolutely! I grew up in the 1980's and remember the little green £1 and the £20 which were massive compared to these modern notes. Can't stand these modern plastic pieces of junk. Tiny little notes that feel and look like something out of a kid's playset.

Have you tried paying with the coins still in their wrapper, or showing it. Since it includes all the Royal Mint stuff, would that help staff accept the coins? Or is the point to just use legal tender just like any other coin.

Enjoying catching up on what to me is new content. I think one thing these show up is what an absolute con these Royal Mint adverts are selling coins that to the untrained eye sound like good value. Baring in mind you’ve stated previously (or since) that you pay 80% of the face value for them, it’s clear that although there’s a market for rare coins, the majority don’t achieve a value even equal to their face value. The fact that banks don’t have to take them really makes the selling point of “legal tender” a farce.
I’m glad you’ve found a way to use these at their face value (and the extra bonus that it’s on fuel we are being ripped off on). Business is business and if petrol stations find that allowing customers to pay for their fuel AFTER they consume it is the most convenient way to do business, they must accept the rough with the smooth (eg they have to follow certain laws that wouldn’t ordinarily be the case in a standard shop). Just because a company is a large corporation doesn’t mean they can have it both ways.
And although I’m sure with some of your auditing there will be somethings I disagree with on here, on so many levels, this is a great exercise both from a business point of view and a moral one.

All my research suggests that. Google is your friend here (not BBB) I just leave the coins so they can reconsider and get a second chance of receiving full payment after seeking legal advice. I might reconsider this since the Bridgwater incident where they refused payment and gave the payment to the police even though the police said it was a civil matter and nothing to do with them. The WPC recommended I take the coins back and said that if the garage take civil action and it goes against me, then I'll have to pay twice.
