      Somewhat honorable. Using the Rex infant as bait by breaking its leg to lure in its father to kill it wasn't honorable. Though he does show concern for people to certain degrees, he cared for his friend, and as seen in the video he doesn't tolerate disrespect to women. He's a memorable character, not the greatest yet far from the worst.

    • @rchhowe
      @rchhowe 3 года назад +5

      I am old enough to have seen Lost World in theatres, and remember later when it was first aired on broadcast TV (Fox, I believe) the additional scenes were a big part of the promotion, and the way it aired on TV relatively soon (a couple years maybe) after its theatrical release seemed like a pretty big deal at the time... though as I remember it, that quick turnover would become pretty common soon after. When the DVDs came out a few years later, the scenes were included as a bonus feature, in a slightly rougher state. The other clip on of these scene on RUclips looks like it comes from that source. This source is some sort of broadcast television, indicated by the rating on the left hand side of the screen when the video starts. The last time I saw Lost World was when I bought the DVD when it came out in like 2000 or whatever, so I don't know anything beyond that time period. (Just some info for those curious! a bit of faulty memory may be present.)
      I'm glad you brought up the intention of this scene, as so many people have missed it (including myself when I first saw it), even after Ajay points it out so clearly at the end.
      When I was a young teen, I loved this scene simple because I thought Roland was just being a cool guy for starting this fight with a "bad" guy. And it's true, the guy had it coming. Roland has a personal sense of decency that is admirable and more of which can be seen in his honorable actions later in the movie. But like all good characters, Roland is flawed. Sure, he didn't like seeing this waitress being treated poorly, but his actions were far more about him than it was about her - or even about how the other man was behaving.
      He started this fight because he is bored. He is dealing with his realization that his type of guy is a dying breed. His idea of hunting as honourable is changing with the times, which clashes with the "gentlemen hunter" identity which has been a part of him likely all his life. His superior abilities have made him arrogant. He sees himself as a great man among lessers, both in these kinds of assholes at the bar, the "rich dentist" types he's taken on safaris, and the Greenpeace types whose ideology is in direct opposition to his own. Ajay, Roland's one true friend, can see right away the real motivations behind the fight.
      I haven't really been interested in Jurassic Park since the 90s (I say, as a randomly write an essay in a RUclips video of a Lost World cut scene) , and so my info might be out of date, but originally I remember that the baby T-Rex's leg was supposed to be accidentally broken by Peter Ludlow. Ludlow who was drunk and prematurely celebrating his victory, steps on the animal. It's another layer to the whole thing. Roland hates guys like Ludlow, but he works for him, doing his dirty work. The movie portrays Ludlow as a rich kid of questionable morals, with no skill. Ludlow needs skills. Roland sells his skills to further Ludlow's goals, which put people in danger. This clashes with Roland's morals, but he needs to do it. His continued need to have his superiority confirmed is how he is dealing with all the moral clashes in his life and with his identity. And he thinks he can prove his superiority to himself and others by killing the T-Rex and hanging its head on the wall of his lodge.
      In the end of the movie, Roland doesn't kill the rex, but he has defeated it - shown he's the better hunter the same way he has every other animal - and it still feels hollow. The type of people who have shown complete disdain for his identity as a hunter are the only characters who have shown any real honor and integrity. They also "defeat" Roland in his main goal, stopping him from killing the T-Rex. Nick gets one over on him and maybe this is as worthy a foe as Roland will find in his life. Meanwhile, Ludlow, the man Roland worked for, just got people killed, including Ajay, Roland's only friend.
      A lot of people don't like Lost World. I certainly don't think of it as highly as I did when I was a kid. But the stuff with Roland is among the best parts of the movie, and it's a shame that so much of it seemed to get lost on the cutting room floor. The Lost World is "just" an action movie, but I love action movies, and having this level of depth and character development really can elevate a good action movie into something more.
      I love this scene even more now than when I was a kid. Yeah, Roland is being a badass, but there is so much more going on here than just that.

      @@rchhowe I actually have to disagree with Ajay's assessment in part because it feels WAY too much like the scriptwriter trying to downplay what Roland does in the scene. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, because the writers for some reason thought a bunch of idiots with little care for human life (our protagonists) were somehow easier to root for than the mostly competent expedition led by Roland Tembo despite having the protagonists make the worst possible decisions they could at every turn.

    This scene was most definitely taken from the Fox Network broadcast that came out back in 2005. I remember it because during one of the commercial breaks, there was an announcer that said to stay tune for the trailer for War of the Worlds, which was going to be released later in the summer of that year, which I got so psyched about, since I was a fan of the original book by H.G. Wells (I read it in my school's library). But when this scene was presented, I immediately began to feel a sense of fascination with the character of Roland Tembo. I didn't know what it was when I first saw the character but I thought to myself he's kind of an awesome ass-kicker standing up for the waitress being harassed and disgustingly fondled inappropriately by the moron in the green shirt. And I also felt a sense of warmth by Roland's friend Ajay, who seemed to not have enough of screen time in the final theatrical version. But here we get a very good in-depth presentation of the friendship that he shares with Roland. The scene is very unique because you get a sense of Roland's morals and life philosophy. He is truly one of a kind of movie character. Played by one of the greats no longer with us.
    R.I.P
    Pete Postlethwaite.
    You did such a great job playing a complex character.
    He was a cool giant of a man from across the pond.

    Definitely a mistake to remove this scene - I know the runtime was pushing it already, but they could have edited this down too. As cool as it is to see Roland effortlessly beat up a smug groper, it was just a side show. In the brief interactions here between him and Ajay, we establish not only both their characters (the finished film just has Ajay appear as one of the many hunters, and its not unless you watch carefully that you realize he and Roland are close friends), but their relationship and their history. Here, Roland goes from just being any old big game hunter to one growing tired of the sport until a new quarry turns his head and gives him a new lease of life, which adds to the emotional weight of when the drive gets him his prize but at the cost of his best friend. This scene completes Roland's character arc, and without it, the film has a conclusion but limited set-up.

    • @Amp661
      @Amp661 Год назад +1

      I know why they cut this out after thinking about it. Roland's character was very forward about wanting to hunt the Rex when arriving on Sorna. In this scene he comes across as "everything is too easy and there's nothing to challenge him" when talking to Ajay, so when Ajay died on the island and he went home defeated, his scoffing here in Kenya literally bit him in the ass as being "undefeated". It's better to leave this scene out, it shows him to be just a hunter looking for a new trophy instead of being pompous as shown here

    This should have been left in, it wasn’t just a badass scene on Roland’s part but cemented that Roland and Ajay were old friends looking to return. It also feels like it mirrors the scene of Nedry and Dodgson in Costa Rica.     For those querying why this scene was left out;
    It makes Roland to be too much of a 'good guy' which wasn't Spielberg's intention. So he removed a scene that makes viewers emphasize with his ambition to hunt a Tyrannosaurus.
    Whether this was a good move for the story is another matter. Making Roland out as a badguy while making Vince Vaughns character (whose an utterly unlikeable person) to be a good guy was a poor story choice imo. But that's what Spielberg wanted.
    Spielberg himself has criticised the way this film turned out, perhaps with hindsight this was one reason why.

      Good on you, man. I love this scene, and personally wish it had made its way into the film, but watching the Cretaceous Cut, one realizes that:
      1) This scene's inclusion in the first act makes it so the audience has to wait too long to get to the dinosaurs.
      2) Giving Roland the moral high ground this early on makes it less of a twist when we start to see evidence midway through the film that he's more than just a heartless poacher.
