- Today in the shop we are finishing our multi-part series knife making build-along, with the process of profiling your handle, drawing out the guide for a coke bottle shape, shaping on the grinder, finish sanding and oiling and the final sharpen. As I mentioned, we try to steer clear of multi-part series videos because we are constantly annoyed by trying to find different parts of a series when all you want is to be able to watch a video from beginning to end. We have made an exception to this rule over the last several weeks to bring you this knife making build-along series. We have been following along with the knife talk podcast build-along and thought it would be fun, and more beneficial for you, to create a video to go along with each week's focus on the next step of this knife making journey.

Your knives are beautiful...great craftsmanship. I just made my first knife from an old rusty file as I do not have a forge. I made my own bevel jig which worked very well. The knife came out beautiful with a high polished blade that holds an edge very well. The handle is made of rosewood and the problem was drilling holes in the tang for pins. After much research I decided not to try and anneal the tang only so I could drill. Rather I decide not to use pins and epoxy the handle in place. I decided to use JB Weld and it worked exceptionally well. After shaping the handle and sanding I used the white polishing compound on a cotton buffer wheel and the handle came out beautifully polished. I am very pleased with my first ever knife making project. The only tools I used was my 4x36 belt sander, my bandsaw to cut the handle wood, a Dremel tool (the Dremel was awesome to work with..indispensible) and my drill press with a 4 inch buffer wheel. I gave the JB Weld a full day to cure and did not clamp it too tightly. It worked great and using it saved money I would have had to spend to anneal. My experiences might help your audience if they are new to knife making.

Great work...I was able to make a handle out of old-growth walnut just like yours using only my hand-held belt sander in a vice. It was not easy and took a long time, but I surprised myself how well it turned out...A lot to be said for having the right tools and not doing work-arounds.
Craftsmanship is all about using what you have to the best of your ability.

😂😂😂. Who would have thought I would ever even get close to using 20 grit. Now I use a 36 regularly.

I like the O1-Steel also very much. For protect the blade we use Ballistol, not WD40. Do you have Ballistol in the US?
Maybe you can collect all the grits you had used in working? Different grits for the handle and differents grit for the metallwork?
Could be a nice „guideline“ for other builders! 😃

That handle is beautiful! Mind if I ask where you got your 1x30 stropping belt? Do you use a compound on it?
Thanks! The stropping belt is an old 220 belt, flipped inside out. 😉 I use white polishing compound on it.

Hi I'm new too this and was just wondering what size brass rod you use for the pins please ? Also is it best to use a brass hammer to knock them in with? Many thanks jody.
The boiled Linseed oil makes it really pop it out with the grain. Amazing job. Does the linseed oil make it stronger? Or stops splitting? Can you lacquer after? Or do you use lacquer instead? Any reply appreciated cheers from Australia just subbed and liked 🙂👍👍👍
Thanks for the kind words! The BLO is used as a finish to brighten and protect. The wood would dry out and crack if not oiled with something. I’m a fan of BLO, as well as a number of oil-wax products. I make my own 1-1 BLO/Beeswax mixture.The addition of a wax also helps to make a water barrier. I’ve never used lacquer so I can’t really help you out there. Sounds like an interesting thing to give a try.

I have a older model 1 HP Sear/Craftsman 2x42. It’s a great machine.
What did you use to clean the sanding drum on your drill press?
It’s a sanding belt eraser.
What belt was you using to sharpen it?
How long/how many passes would you do on the leather strop
What oil did you use for the handle?
Boiled linseed oil

What oil do you use on a resin handle?
I’m not sure about that. Might not need any oil, just buff it to a shine, since oil’s purpose is to keep the handle from drying out.

Peening is fine but you have to be extra careful so you don't split the handle...I prefer epoxy

That turned out realy well. But please do every carbon steel blade a favour and keep wd40 away from it, it will actualy rust it. Wd40 does not protect carbon steels. Its good to clean and loosen certain sticky things, but it actualy rusts carbon steels. (Its mostly made from water).Use mineral oil, its neutral colour and food safe. You can do the entir knife with it, and its cheaper.
Sad that noone actually peens there pins anymore, its how its been done for Hundreds of years, before epoxy was a thing. The epoxy should only be a backup to the actual peening of the pins.
