  • Depreciation is one of the major costs that comes with owning a sports car and some models are notorious for crazy high depreciation rates, costing owners tens and thousands of dollars. The Porsche cayman is one of them, but even in this market, there are some premature sign of cracking price trends.

    The Porsche Cayman market softened slightly compared to february but that it still very much belongs to the group markets that outperformed the general market. If you are shopping in this segment and care about depreciation, it is hard to ignore the cayman. It is one the most financially savy purchases you can make. Values decreased by an average of 2.7% excluding the GT4 RS and this is less than the market average. GT4s were even flat during last year, after they bounced back from correction in the second half of 2022.

    ICE Cayman values only going up in the future once Porsche stops ICE and moves to 100% EV Caymans. I’m sure the EVs will be faster but they will never provide the same driving experience!

    I’ve been watching the Cayman market for 3 years and this is spot on. Carried over inventory is spiking in 2024. Even still, dealers aren’t cutting prices on 987.2s. I’m fairly certain when they sell after 90 days, they are being discounted at the negotiation table, but not publicly. This is keeping prices artificially flat when they are actually coming down.
    987.1s continue to drop due to IMS/bore scoring scares. A local guy listed his 2006 CS for 30k but offered to sell it for 26k when we met up. 987.1 inventory is going up and private sellers seem motivated to make a deal.
    Here are my 987 market evaluations in 2024:
    987.1 base = 20-25k
    987.1 S = 25-34k
    987.2 base = 24-32k
    987.2 S = 32-45k
    As always, transmission, mileage, color, options, and overall condition play a significant role in valuation.
    I am also seeing an uptick in 987.2 R prices in recent months. It may be the season, or may be a trend change, but Rs are trending up towards 90k.

    I have 2 points to make:
    1) it's about time the world stops considering things an asset like a stock or a house.
    2) it's pretty damn sure that when i'll be able to afford a porsche the market will correct 1-2 years before and make it unaffordable (fml)

    I have a 2009 987.2 base 6sp manual and having a hard time judging if I need to hurry up and sell it or is it ok to enjoy it for the summer. I know the car is a very small segment and hard to get a statistical average on a manual transmission car. Any insight would be helpful.

    • @MrRoyck10
      @MrRoyck10 23 дня назад +1

      Car are not investments so it’s hard to predict, it cost me £11k in running / maintenance costs and depreciation for two years ownership of abase 987.2 manual. Enjoy your Cayman, it is not entirely clear why you need to hurry up and sell your car, if you are worried about depreciation then only you can judge where to cut your losses.

      What car would you be moving into instead? Unless its a 997.2, 981 Cayman or your moving into a Toyota. Every other car out there will likely depreciate far worse then a Manual Cayman or 911 would.
