This boils down to the culture of the Carlton Football Club and the mental fragility of those players. I really believe they have come to the conclusion that at best most of them are very average players and their confidence is totally shot. They have very little self belief in themselves or each other and it shows with their on field performances so far in 2021.

The turning point for Carlton was several years ago when the board gave Bret Ratten his marching orders when the club was rebuilding and statistics showed at that time that Carlton was moving forward. The players worked well together under Ratten and the wheels started to turn. Enter Mick Malthouse 😂😂😂
You can thank LoGiudice, Judd, and numerous fired influences for that. I have no issue with 'Rat in a box' but he came in at such a heated point that it almost nullified his influence. Ratten unified. I just want to see the big supporter based Victorian clubs at least firing every 5-10 seasons. Not decades in the doldrums.
Catastrophic decision that. Ratten should never have been sacked then.. He was shaping the club going forward. We missed the finals by a hair - that year...

A few years ago I remember a Carlton player had left and joined another team. He was interviewed after a training at his new team and he was genuinally stunned at how much more intense the training sessions were compared to what they had been at Carlton. I have heard that story multiple times from ex-Carlton players. I remember thinking at the time of hearing that....'ohhhhhhhh that is why they are continually non competetive'.
Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Ive seen some of their trainings; not much different from what a decent local suburban footy side would do.. Half Carltons list are suburban level players anyway. So they are right at home with that casual training approach.
Maclure is brutally honest and on the mark. Blues are doubly cursed. They lack determination & effort, but also the talent. Very poor list as a result of poor recruiting and poor development. I no longer look forward to Blues games.
As a diehard supporter I’m hurting as well game in game out every week and I’ve been supporting Carlton since I was really young and I’m from Western Australia
Ummm, he says Essendon have been better than Carlton. Is this guy for real? Bombers haven't won a final in 17 years. In that stage Carlton have won finals, even beating Essendon in one. I'm a Bombers fan, and if anyone should be just as peeved, if not more, it's the Bombers. Hands down the worst performing club of the last 2 decades. In fact, taking out the expansion teams, Essendon and Carlton are the only 2 clubs to not make a prelim in the last 15-16 years. We both used to be power houses, now absolute jokes. Poorly run clubs and both the Blues and Bomber faithful have had a gut full.
Well said Mark but the issue is even if the players sit down and talk amongst themselves, the reality is there are at least 10 players in our side that are lucky to be VFL standard. If we finish above bottom 6 this year it will be a miracle.
Betts, overhyped dud who rarely puts good games together. Murphy, never seen him win a game off his own boot. Never seen him have that attitude of Follow me boys, I will show the way. Casboult, can not work out how he keeps getting games at AFL level. Still can't kick straight. Blues need a huge clean out.
I stopped being a Carlton supporter the day their cheating was exposed ... any team that considers themselves more important than the game is no team for me ... i no longer have a team and enjoy the game every bit as much as I used to. They earned the past 20 years. It's looking like the penalty is going to be a quarter of a century
100% agree, they cheated and hopefully learnt but what is worse is during the period they were actually cheating Elliot was going on about how the bombers had cheated to steal a premiership from them. Karma has come big time to this club
Just about every AFL team has cheated. Bombers broke the cap in a premiership year in 2000 but the league did nothing until 2001 then dropped a ton of bricks on Carlton. Learn a bit more about the facts not the propaganda and you'll be surprised. Almost every club has bent the rules.
@@douglasmace7703 ... cant you read mate ? where did i say anything about other teams not cheating?? who do i support now ??? Learn a bit more about the facts not the propaganda and you'll be surprised.
@@douglasmace7703 and like I said Elliot was harping on about how they were robbed by a cheating Essendon but his team was cheating at that time he was opening his mouth. At some stage the league has to come down hard to stop teams thinking about cheating and Carlton were the suckers. They got what they deserved and have had plenty of opportunities with the ridiculous amount of high draft picks they have used to rebuild but have failed where as other teams can be competitive without those same high draft picks
@@knight2425 yeah look, not saying any team that cheats doesn't deserve to be punished. Carlton is no different. The league however is flawed with bias and limp wristed punishment. Frankly you cant blame Carltons slump on the breach anymore. Its just a slump. St Kilda are in one since 66, Dees since 64. Dogs only just won one. We're no better or worse than Freo. I hope we win a flag but Carlton fans are quite emotional and irrational. Just have to sit and watch. Wait. Its completely out of our hands. Carn the Blues!!
As a life long blues supporter where they are now compared to their halcyon years is tragic and embarrassing. They are meek and soft. They show no aggression or desire (with the exception of Walsh and Saad). Teague and the board need to go. They have a toxic culture and aren’t respected by the opposition.
A major problem is that in 2021, Carlton players are being laid as much as Geelong or Richmond players. Players in terrible teams are still young, boofhead millionaires just as in he winning teams. What’s the incentive to win?

I don’t understand why they have got so many players over the years from GWS that have hardly contributed - and it’s happening again - why would poor Cripps stay beyond this year ..? It’s quite confusing......
as a carlton supporter who has only known losing i am seriously VERY close to losing all my passion for this club. losing as a fan for decade after decade can become draining.
You were me before 2017, that and we were mocked for coming 9th with a nice song to go with it. It'll turn for Carlton eventually, you need role players like Kane Lambert and Jack Graham.
It's showing the effects of bad moves in the past. Betts (at his prime moving to Adelaide), Toohey, Kennedy to WCE to get Judd, then Fev, Robbo, Simmo... So many bad decisions, ripped out the clubs identity and passion.
As a true Carlton supporter. when I was a kid Carlton used to hold chook raffles to keep the club afloat. They went for 21 years before winning a grand final. When they got the right administration and finally got money in the bank to buy some better players away they went, unstoppable in the day. Have lost count of the amount of times I heard supporters from other clubs complaining about Carltons ability to buy players and I used to say BUT what is your club doing about it ? Suddenly we became a richer more powerful club through sheer guts and determination then the AFL moved the goal posts which I believe has been great for other clubs supporters to also have some fun along the way. To see the Swans, Bulldogs, Geelong and Richmond finally Win was great to watch, so chin up boys your turn might happen again one day.
Well, Melbourne could be the next club that breaks their very long AFL Premiership (Championship in my neck of the woods since I'm an American) drought.
I can understand why fans and club legends are so upset and hurt. Almost 10 years of a rebuild and they haven't gotten very far. They thought the coach was the problem. So they kept changing coaches. They've got players who have potential. And it's sad to see as an AFL fan. That it seems that they can't apply themselves.
look at what Port has done. They were at breaking point with clubs trying to poach their best players but they recruited well and rebuilt their club in all departments. Carlton has been grabbing number one picks and priority picks yet are still rubbish. The afl needs to look at how they help clubs and the draft system as Port has proven it doesn’t take priority picks for being rubbish to become competitive!
I am a long-term suffering Carlton supporter I think get rid of one coach for every position on the field and get back to basics and for goodness sake, teach players how to kick a straight ball, to miss a goal when you are 25 metres in front of goal is not funny. Mark, your comments are 100% correct too many yes men.
Mediocre list for the most part; lets be honest... There's 4 or 5 guys on that list that would have got a game at Carlton during Sellers era.. No more than that.. Hard to turn it around when half of the starting 22 are VFL level players...
Good point about players having to stand up and drive the change. Geelongs resurgence in 2007 was largely player driven and look how the club changed almost overnight.
Murphy has always sucked, never should have been captain (Simpson got ripped off). Casbolt, Dow, SPS, Charlie Curnow, Williamson, Marchbank, Plowman not AFL standard. Coach is ordinary and the board is useless. Sad time being a blues fan.
@@tomassaus9109 I'll give Caleb a pass then mate😉 though Charlie's always injured ( due to his own stupidity mostly) Marchbank has potential but players don't improve at Carlton so where does that leave him. We need to avoid the GWS castoffs like the plague.
Mark Maclure seems like a half intelligent person here, but I remeber him going off at Fev on the radio commentary, how he was lazy and useless(while being double teamed), Fev went on to kick 6 in the second half and win the game. So while he's right here, it's easy to be right about Carlton being bad atm.
One game against an underachieving team in port does not define carlton atm....over a decade of mismanagement and dumb decisions made by the top have created a mess however does !!...heads need to roll from the top, thats obvious....
Get into them sellers,I bleed navy blue ,it hurts to see this once mighty club play like this,McClure for president, when are these boys going stand up and fuxxing have a go
Mark's pen is one of those fat ones with the colour changing capability, but he isn't changing the colours, it's just that his specific pen seems loose in terms of the screw mechanic that connects the blue bottom part to the top colour changer part - which in turn makes the spring inside looser and thus creating a rattling noise which is amplified by being near the chest mic. And yes, annoying, but they probably wouldn't have noticed.

This boils down to the culture of the Carlton Football Club and the mental fragility of those players.
I really believe they have come to the conclusion that at best most of them are very average players and their confidence is totally shot.
They have very little self belief in themselves or each other and it shows with their on field performances so far in 2021.
we have a talented list there’s no denying it. teague just needs to pull his finger out his ass and start dropping players and getting into them at the huddles. he shows no emotion in the coaching box, just doesn’t look like he’s passionate. he’s mates with the players not their coach
Agree with Greg. Average players, last year done fans thought Plowman was good and i had a few back and forth. Maybe these average players relying on star recruits to do all the heavy lifting. It doesn't work that way.
Yep. 10-11 decent players and the other half of the starting 22 are VFL level players at best..
At Richmond they drop players when we win
That`s why the Tigers are such a great side! And that`s coming from a Blues supporter!
Did you see Dimmas face in the last quarter against the saints? Anyone would think he was the St Kilda coach.
@@petervella your right there. I'll keep this text to show my friends other wise they'd never believe a Carlton supporter said that about the tigers. Good on you.
@@BillyBowlster he always suffers during a game. A perfectionist.
@@rayoflight8182 You have to give credit where it's due! It's called sportsmanship, and no one runs the ball better than Richmond! An example is the Preliminary final against Port last year! They (Port) had fifteen extra inside 50s to the Tigers and you still beat them!
Now what does that say about Damien Hardwicks' game plan!
The man is a brilliant strategist!
All the best to you!
The turning point for Carlton was several years ago when the board gave Bret Ratten his marching orders when the club was rebuilding
and statistics showed at that time that Carlton was moving forward. The players worked well together under Ratten
and the wheels started to turn.
What’s Ratten done at St.Kilda? He’s a dud! Saints were rated higher than the Blues!!
Catastrophic decision that. Ratten should never have been sacked then.. He was shaping the club going forward. We missed the finals by a hair - that year...
@@binunladen9066 Saints won an elimination final last year, you forget ?
@@markdouglas9182 ..yeah..and if you recall...Carlton played dead in a match on the Gold Coast....so they wouldnt make the finals.....so Ratten would get the chop.....senoir players hatched that one.....as it turned out Carlton wouldnt have made the finals...win or loose....Demons played dead at Geelong so Bailey would get the chop...it happens...its a stench....and Blues have never recovered from it.....and one wonders about the non tryers at the Pies...and Bucks is gone....
Do you remember what player that was?
Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Ive seen some of their trainings; not much different from what a decent local suburban footy side would do.. Half Carltons list are suburban level players anyway. So they are right at home with that casual training approach.
22 years of rubbish...
Maclure is brutally honest and on the mark. Blues are doubly cursed. They lack determination & effort, but also the talent. Very poor list as a result of poor recruiting and poor development. I no longer look forward to Blues games.
Ha! Carlton have become the new (old) Melbourne.
As a diehard supporter I’m hurting as well game in game out every week and I’ve been supporting Carlton since I was really young and I’m from Western Australia
There seems to be a lot of Carlton supporters over there.
@@nathyatta Yeah. Some of us oldies remember Syd Jackson, Ken Hunter, Peter Bosustow and a few others.
Well said. The Big 2 are the now the bottom 2 in recent years... Its not good for the AFL..
like all professional sport teams, these days to much money and no club loyalty
Bizarrely, I think Adelaide Crows will win a premiership before Carlton.
Well said Mark but the issue is even if the players sit down and talk amongst themselves, the reality is there are at least 10 players in our side that are lucky to be VFL standard. If we finish above bottom 6 this year it will be a miracle.
Our best 10-11 players are very good. But I agree - the other half of our starting 22 are basically VFL level players.
5:31 Slobbo - “head on the nail mate” 🤣🤦♂️
“Hit it on the nail mate”
my team Essendon are in the same predicament, and I have had a gut full.
Carlton and Essendon - 2 of the 3 "big Melbourne" clubs have been down WAAYYY too long... Collingwood's down too. So that's all of the Big 3..
@@markdouglas9182 I'd say Richmond is one of the big clubs of Melbourne so more like the Big 4.
@@lachlanmuller8760 Youre totally right. But Richmond have been successful the last few years Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon
Totally agree with Mark Maclure The CFC need a complete overhaul.
They know we're coming
As a life long blues supporter where they are now compared to their halcyon years is tragic and embarrassing. They are meek and soft. They show no aggression or desire (with the exception of Walsh and Saad). Teague and the board need to go. They have a toxic culture and aren’t respected by the opposition.
A major problem is that in 2021, Carlton players are being laid as much as Geelong or Richmond players. Players in terrible teams are still young, boofhead millionaires just as in he winning teams. What’s the incentive to win?
I hear Mark on ABC Radio Saturday afternoons.
overrated and came on a big deal. Saad and Williams come on big deals with hype and neither have justified it. On top of that cripps is either playing hurt or plateaued big tim
Have we got a Collingwood person out there like this?
I wonder what he though of last year and what he thinks now. They were great beginning last year but end of last yr and this year, they have been awful
"Carlton are rebuilding".
Spot on mark been going for Carlton since 1974 and the last decade has been so painful maybe its the time to give the young guys a decent run at it.
The best part was whe he called robbo gerrad... robbo wouldn't have slept that night..
I don’t understand why they have got so many players over the years from GWS that have hardly contributed -
and it’s happening again - why would poor Cripps stay beyond this year ..? It’s quite confusing......
you should be a coach Mark
Last 20 seconds is EXACTLY the culture Carlton need!
as a carlton supporter who has only known losing i am seriously VERY close to losing all my passion for this club. losing as a fan for decade after decade can become draining.
Yes you should you can come over to the tigers we don’t mind
You were me before 2017, that and we were mocked for coming 9th with a nice song to go with it. It'll turn for Carlton eventually, you need role players like Kane Lambert and Jack Graham.
@@patkelly6349 lol
@@BillyBowlster and Martin and Cotchin and Edwards and Bolton and Prestia.
It's showing the effects of bad moves in the past. Betts (at his prime moving to Adelaide), Toohey, Kennedy to WCE to get Judd, then Fev, Robbo, Simmo... So many bad decisions, ripped out the clubs identity and passion.
I agree with mark my generation has been robbed of success from the club I have been to 1 final in 16 years pathetic
I really do hope that Saad is enjoying his stay
Still relevant today.
There’s be some A grade clubs out there that’s nail em to the wall, get in one of the former hard arses, the ilk of Robert Walls to shake em up
I can understand why fans and club legends are so upset and hurt.
Overpaid rubbish!
God this is enjoyable viewing
Yeah. They were such arrogant, cheating bastards in their glory days. May they stay a joke!
Get Walsh out of the thumbnail 🤬🤬
I am a long-term suffering Carlton supporter I think get rid of one coach for every position on the field and get back to basics and for goodness sake, teach players how to kick a straight ball, to miss a goal when you are 25 metres in front of goal is not funny. Mark, your comments are 100% correct too many yes men.
It could be worse. You could follow STK.
Charlie curnow and Marchbank are injured mate and they if anyone, showed the most signs
@@tomassaus9109 I'll give Caleb a pass then mate😉 though Charlie's always injured ( due to his own stupidity mostly) Marchbank has potential but players don't improve at Carlton so where does that leave him. We need to avoid the GWS castoffs like the plague.
Dow is one of the worst player’s i’ve ever seen
@@osvnisaneek8254 up there with Angwin and Bootsma. Also 2 former Blues 😒
Fev of all players needed a kick up the arse particularly early in his career. They helped.
thats old Australia think and speak right there...still luv the blues ,from Glenelg
I know this guy is a Carlton great, but god he is cold and miserable.
Carlton haven't been too bad they played a top team get over it.
One game against an underachieving team in port does not define carlton atm....over a decade of mismanagement and dumb decisions made by the top have created a mess however does !!...heads need to roll from the top, thats obvious....

Get into them sellers,I bleed navy blue ,it hurts to see this once mighty club play like this,McClure for president, when are these boys going stand up and fuxxing have a go
Umm I go for Carlton just dont say that just say they got to get better
Who is fidgeting with their f-ing pen? It’s doing my head in.
It's mark who is clicking his pen the others have normal pens he has a blue and red pen that clicks when you change the colour.
