The good old Mississippi River is full of surprises. I've found out the hardway myself. I loaned my cabin cruiser to my BIL who got it stuck on an unmarked sandbar in pool 26. And further North at the confluence of the Mississippi and the Illinois Rivers, I hit a submerged log that almost tore my auxiliary engine off of the transom. Luckily I was only going about 4 knots at the time.
I'm enjoying your houseboat trip. I found you guys because I'm researching about living on a houseboat. Hopefully I can pick your brains later. I loved the "thank you baby Jesus " reference. Talladega nights?
Thank you. And yes, Talladega nights. LOL! We'd be happy to discuss houseboating with you. Send us an email at info@im-onvacation.com and we can exchange contacts, etc
Haters are gonna hate! Just ignore them. I find that the loudest accusers are the most guilty of the hypocrites! Thank you for sharing your journey! Love you guys! ❤❤🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸⭐️
Yeah, I'm sure it's pretty common knowledge for the locals, but not for us. It didn't help that we had to back track either. Thanks for following along. Please subscribe if you haven't already.
I find Jerry Hays river travel books very valuable. I have traveled 300 miles of the Wabash River and all 400 miles of the navigable Cumberland River. No trip is perfectly planned. Just roll with the punches. You guys did a great job. Oh and I do all this on an open air 22' pontoon.
I live about a mile from the Captain's Table restaurant in Moline (not Davenport) Very familiar with this "pool" between Lock and dams 14 and 15. I sail with a friend here all the time. Everyone is aware of the wing dams, as you would have been if you had reliable charts or chart plotter. They are hard to spot in high water, but if normal to low levels you can see it protruding above the water. You are in deep trouble if you're navigating the river without any awareness of the literally thousands and thousands of ing dams that run parallel as well as perpendicular to the current and stick out from the shore to keep the water flow in the channel. If you leave the channel, you better know where you're going. The wing dam outside of the marina at the Captain's Table should have been shown on charts. Again, if you're planning on navigating by .... nothing but looking for stuff sticking out of the water, you're never going to make it. But hope you get past St. Louis and then you won't have to worry about locks or wing dams. It's unfortunate that on a busy labor day weekend you didn't see all the other boats passing between the rock piles that mark the entrance and chose not to follow them and go your own way. And wow, interesting seeing you walking along the streets that I ride my bike almost daily. I live JUST on top of the bluff above that Dollar General store you visited! Amazing. There's also an opening in the wing damn near where the large cruise ship Celebration Belle docks, again between some rock piles that allows passage. I guess you went all the way down under the bridge and through the channel at the tip of Arsenal Island. And BTW.... the Captain's Table and Marquis Marina are in MOLINE Illinois. You even showed the sign that said welcome to MOLINE in your video. ha. (where you walked was right on the border between Moline and East Moline) Davenport is further downstream and in Iowa. Admire your trip and would love to own a houseboat. But not sure my nerves can take following you for the rest of the trip. ha. Best of luck.
Thank you for the info and following along. Not sure if you continued to watch, but there were definitely some wins and some more hairy events that wouldn't bode well for the nerves. 🤣
Hi guys - I realize this stuff happened 2 years ago... but since you're just posting... I'm enjoying binge watching your trip. Admire your fearlessness and determination to do this trip. However, I have to call out your indignation over the lock 14A experience. You didn't do the responsible research for the trip, can't read a chart - or don't have one (sorry... a 'map'), appear to be navigating by google maps, and are sitting in the bar without having 'checked the boat for a hole'. I think you guys are pretty lucky things didn't turn out worse.
Hey Peter, thank you so much for following along! No doubt we're very lucky things didn't turn out worse and admittedly we did not pull up every lock or pre determine resting spots for each stop. We had a Navionics chip card, but the GPS was dated and failed to work properly (we fix that in future episode.) We pulled charts at various times, but falsely relied on the GPS and visual markers. So we absolutely recommend anyone download the US Army Corp chart book and ensure all equipment functions properly. I would even recommend having radar, which we did not.
you guys start this video on coney island, my local and used to be favorite beach, since then excavators have removed this entire length of beach for unkown reasons
I canoed the Mississippi between St. Paul and New Orleans without going near any wing dams. I can't believe you didn't see that one. I'll bet you can see it in the pictures now.
That's awesome you canoed the river. We made friends with some canoers as we went down the river that were doing the same thing. You'll see them in later videos. As for the wing damns, depending on the water level, they can be completely underwater. And there's a different vantage pt from a canoe compared to a houseboat.
Cool vid. I've rafted the Yukon River in Alaska for many years on log rafts. Now looking at maybe a trip down the Miz-sip. How do ya think that would go? We generally drift with current but also have an outboard on our skiff for steering when necessary. You can see us on Nat Geo "Yukon River Run" and tomorrow we'll be on History Channel's "Mountain Men Alaska" We're on a log raft there for the first episode. Lauro and Neil. I have plenty of Yukon River experience but... I think the Mississippi will be a new game. Thanks for posting the info. Very helpful@@ImonVacation
I grew up and lived in the Quad Cities for most of my life! Plenty of ppl who live in this area but has never been on the Mississippi have no clue about the dam. A few more the next 10 to 15 miles down also. No signs at all. Glad you guys made it.
We were being a little facetious about the hull. I immediately went down and checked under the hatch and continued to check for any signs as we boated several more hours to the Marina. I had a grand idea that I would jump in the water and swim underneath the boat to check from the outside, which I had not done at that time. And at the moment in the bar, nerves and worries were still high which was the reason for the comment.
The throttles would stick, guages didn't work, and no gps on the flybridge, so definitely wasn't an option in all the traffic. Anytime we used the flybridge, we basically set the throttles at the lower helm and would just steer from up there. So we only used it in wide open stretches. And then I would run down to the main helm if a barge was coming.
No cost or any special requirements. Radio ahead if you can, otherwise, just pull up to the red light and the light will change to green when they're ready for you and they'll open the lock.
LOL! We ran all over and inside the boat immediately. I had it in my head that I was going to swim underneath the boat, but never did. But there weren't any signs of water in the hull.
I’m willing to bet it would have been on the charts. That’s why everyone uses some sort of navigation system on their boats, it’s not like navigating a car and you can’t always see the danger in front of you. Several free navigation software for your phone. The ONLY people to blame is you… why do you think the other boats are going in and out between those two rocks, because it looks cool? GET AND USE SOME KIND OF NAVIGATION SOFTWARE FOR YOUR PHONE AT THE VERY LEAST!!! As someone who lives on and travels on a sailboat, this is pure ignorance. 100% guaranteed this would have been on a chart and every bit of navigation software worth having. Now I’m going to look through your videos to figure out when you sank your houseboat.
Tons of assumptions made. I bought the highest level navionics card and downloaded the areas along with community edits, etc. The problem was the GPS couldn't handle it. We had a new gps shipped to us shortly after this incident. Excited to hear you're planning to watch the rest of the videos though. 🤣
LOL! Sounds like we need to reprioritize and change the message we put out. And I guess how we cope with stressful situations as I'm certain that's what was going on in this video. High stress... 😅
Well... the GPS was pretty dated and it couldn't handle the new card I bought. Not sure what range and detail the existing card had. We break down and have a new GPS sent to us in future episode.
If you didn’t understand that commercial traffic has priority over pleasure craft you didn’t do your homework. This video sounds like a little cry baby. Sad..
So glad we had our paper maps on our voyage down the river.
I bet. I had them downloaded on my phone, but paper would have definitely been nice to have.

I love it. Havnt check if there’s a hole yet but we’re at the bar lol
LOL! Priorities!
@@ImonVacation know I know how strong the hull is lol

Crazy to hear that cut the rocks wasn’t marked? Really enjoying watching your trip!!!

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I wish you the best. Take care and God Bless.
Thank you so much Walt. We really appreciate your kind message. Please be sure to subscribe and follow along.
Way to maintain a positive attitude!!!
Thanks! No reason to little setback spoil our Vacation. 🤣
The force is strong in you. You made the right choice by going to get shit faced. I would have done the same. Lol.
Was there a different choice 🤣🤣🤣
Ha - yeah , have a beer - while your boat sinks 😅😂😅
😜
Gotta be careful on the river. Investing in a good charting system would be beneficial. Y’all stay safe out there.
Completely agree. Keep watching as we make some changes. Thanks for following.
Ya'll...😂...lol
How old are you two? Any Holiday is going to be a head ache? Way too many people!
Doesn’t your chartplotter show the wing dams? Mine did on upper Mississippi
It should have, but we later learned that the plotter wasn't capable of loading the chip card/data we bought for it.

Sometimes the video inserts were hilarious! The contrast between the sad boat story and funny clips like at 12:25. hee hee.
Thanks! We figured a little comic relief may help distract from the fact we wrecked. LOL!

What’s the fun in taking all the wing it out? Like yalls style glad yall are ok
you guys start this video on coney island, my local and used to be favorite beach, since then excavators have removed this entire length of beach for unkown reasons
That's a bummer it's gone. That was a cool beach.

Commercial vessels have right of way of lockage
We were aware.
You went to a bar without checking the hull damage?
We were being a little facetious about the hull. I immediately went down and checked under the hatch and continued to check for any signs as we boated several more hours to the Marina. I had a grand idea that I would jump in the water and swim underneath the boat to check from the outside, which I had not done at that time. Why didn't you use the flybridge after this collision?
The throttles would stick, guages didn't work, and no gps on the flybridge, so definitely wasn't an option in all the traffic. Anytime we used the flybridge, we basically set the throttles at the lower helm and would just steer from up there. So we only used it in wide open stretches. Does it cost anything to go thru the locks ?
No cost or any special requirements. Radio ahead if you can, otherwise, just pull up to the red light and the light will change to green when they're ready for you and they'll open the lock.
Somebody better look below in the bilge for water - could be serious

Man I hate that for y'all I can't believe Navionics didn't show any of that it's pretty accurate down here in the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers
Well... the GPS was pretty dated and it couldn't handle the new card I bought. Not sure what range and detail the existing card had. We break down and have a new GPS sent to us in future episode.
Sounds like them lock dudes can be real peckerheads
Most of the time they were awesome!
Hey boy look at the charts look at Navionics is very clear on the wall.
Not your boy. But anyway, the GPS we had wasn't adequate for the chip card and data. We upgraded the GPS shortly afterwards.
Lol don't drink and drive
Ha! Would have made for a good excuse. 🙃
watch out, the cage people on the river
🤔
Guess you delete truthful comments,be lucky to make the trip
I don't recall deleting a comment. Maybe youtube pulled it. But sounds like it must have been mean or hurtful.
