  • Horse Logging in the North Woods of Minnesota (Ely, MN)
Tim Carroll of Cedar River Horse Logging was hired by a landowner to log and mill white pines on his property to build a cabin and barn there. We follow him in all the steps. This episode continues with footage of the draft horses at work as well as milling the white pine logs.
Tim is a sustainable low-impact logger and he explains this as a need to balance the material needs of the owner with the needs of the forest as a whole, leaving some mature trees while harvesting some to produce seeds while clearing some to open up the woods. The low impact is the due:
Use of draft horses for power
    Saw on site
    Build on site
In this episode we see the cabin construction. The only purchased materials are the foundation blocks, windows, doors, roof tin, plywood and insulation.
The horses are used to get the wood to the site until the path becomes a swamp that the horses cannot pass. After that, the guys have to carry everything in by hand.
We see the footings constructed as soon as the ground is thawed. We see the framing work, trusses, inside panelling. Green wood from the tops of some of the trees are used for the columns on the porch. Tim demonstrates how the bark is removed using knives. He explains that wood does not shrink much in length just in diameter so it is ok to use for the columns and
The siding on the cabin is overlapped to allow for shrinkage as it dries.
The last bit of construction is on the outhouse.
Lastly we tour the finished house and it's setting by the lake.

Watching this took me back to my childhood . I've used a draw shave( you called it a draw knife) since I was about 6 yrs old . My granddad showed me how to use the hand tools at a young age . Something about you have to crawl before you can walk .
The use of the horses was a good time too . My big brother and father loved the horses and tought me some . Mainly patience and respect for animals . My father also has a portable saw mill too. Nothing like the smell of cutting lumber and watching the sun come up . Thank you for the trip down memory lane . Know all I need to do is build that cabin in the woods to live out my time . Merry Christmas . "Deeds not words"

can someone tell me please why to do some loggers prefer to log with mules rather than horses?

Mules are stronger and smarter than horses. They're more nimble. You don't have to worry as much about a mule tripping over something and breaking a leg.

@@blainekrueger I might add ,you can't get a mule lost . I had a perchron stud with no sence of direction, dumb as a stump, but the best riden horse ever he was the small type about 1300to 1400lbs.

Of course this is generalizing but: mules are known to have a tougher constitution than horses, i.e. they have more stamina and better health overall. Mules are smart in the sense that they have a very high self preservation instinct. They will not perform a task until they feel very comfortable about each step. This is also why they are considered STUBBORN, whereas you can command a horse into danger and it will comply. I don't think Mules were used to ride into a pitched battle with cannon and gunfire, but horses were. As far as overall power and speed I really don't know. I imagine many breeds of horses are more powerful and definitely faster than mules.

50 Acres & a Cabin - hahaha, but I did compliment your sense of humor. You had everyone at my house laughing when I showed them your “reply.” The reason why I don’t like these “sheds” is: I’m not gonna live in the country inside of a building that offers no protection against bullets and flying debris during hurricanes and tornadoes. If I were to build a glorified shed, I would sand bag it up to 5 feet; the windows would be that high as well.
If I ever go to prison, it would be for “political correctness” reasons and I hope they would lock me up in a shed like this one...haha.
