- Brian shows you how to update your Garmin Maps on your Honda Connect radio. This method is for Honda cars equipped with Honda Connect and garmin maps. Usually in vehicles produced from 2015 onwards to present.
OMG This is the best Video ever, I had been missing the first step of putting your memory stick in the Honda vehicle first, over and over I tried to update the map to a blank stick, not knowing that I had to first connect it to the dang truck! I called the Honda dealer and they said they would charge me by the hour to install it but they wouldn't share the simple steps of Format DISK FAT32> Stick in Honda first> Now Go back to Computer, Stick in Computer> Click GARMIN EXPRESS Voila! Wait 11 minutes not 3 hours and DONE! WOW, I have 10 different sticks trying to do it the wrong way!! Thanks James Bond 007 Honda Dude! You Rock!

You seem to be the only person this side of the Pond who is producing easy to understand and follow videos about the Honda. I have a 2019 CR-V 1.5 Vtec Turbo EX that has an awful lot of bells and whistles that I'm not totally conversant with (The Honda dealer I bought it from showed me the basics, but I'm afraid most of it went in one ear and straight out of the other !). You may have covered some of these, but I'm talking about usage and symbology in the HUD, LKAS, ACC, Apple Car Play, etc, etc.

When I took my car in for routine maintenance, I asked if they could update the navigation system. I got a noncommittal reply. Navigation was not updated. Now that I've viewed your video, I can see that the update takes some time. I appreciate your video, but will have to re-watch it several times to fully understand everything. I wish I could slow down your instructions. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Hey Susan, sorry yes I talk very fast, All you can do is just watch the video, and pause it after each step.. so basically every time there is an instruction, Pause the video, go do - instruction, and then move onto the next one if that makes sense
@@doolanbrian Yesterday I appeared to be on my way to successfully updating the navigation system. However, when the USB drive was performing the update in my vehicle, it went as far as 90-some percent complete, then I got the message that the update had failed. I tried again and got the same message. However, when I went to "Installed Maps" on the Navigation System, I got the following display: OEM North America DEM, OEM CN North America NT 2021 Basic 3D, and OEM CN North America NT 2021. Does that mean my maps were successfully updated after all? Definitions of OEM, CM, AND NT? Thanks for your help!
@@susanzemke7848 That’s the message I am unfamiliar with, I have had cases where the download has been unsuccessful and for some reason the files were corrupt.. this is what I would recommend, clear everything on your USB stick, carry out the procedure again , I have had to do this before and second time round I was successful

Very useful because I have a new 2020 CRV and my Garmin Drive Assist 50 LMT from the the last CRV.
Now, I have to make a decision for the Software GPS or mount my Drive Assist 50 which I like because of the camera record & forward collision warning.

The answer was Garmin LMT because both are about the same cost; yet, Garmin LMT won because the Honda updates are good for 5 years, no camera record and when you change vehicles like i did, the Gramin LMT goes with you.

Do you format the drive first on the computer? The instructions I see for a Jazz 2018 says do so FIRST. you say grab a stick and go to the car.
ALSO, can the car engine be OFF while Garmin is updating on computer. I can't leave my car running on its own!

Thanks for the excellent video. I have a 2017 civiic 1.6 series 9 here in France and did the process last night. It all went well but the loading from Memory stick to car took four hours. I had seen a different instruction vid which said to leave the engine running and was in mortal dread of turning it off in case the device froze forever. Anyway all well now and I love the car .
Glad it got sorted, that seems like a very long time, I haven’t come across that before but I suppose the main thing is you have it done now!

I have a 2019 HR-V and was very surprised that main dealers don't view this as part of a service. As all cars now rely on updateable electronic facilities I just feel this is unacceptable. It would of course help if the car could update without the lengthy USB steps in this day and age. It should be possible wirelessly through a phone or other portable device. Both Garmin and Honda seem to be several years behind the times. My dealer has given me a leaflet that follows what you describe but it has specific directions to use USB 2.0 and not 3.0. I don't have an old USB 2.0 with over 16Gb. USB is supposed to be backwards compatible! I notice you seemed to have a USB 3.0 stick so I will try it! Thanks for your video!

@@doolanbrian Thanks for the reply. Probably not a good idea to do an update while driving. In my experience, slightest jolt to a USB stick, connection interrupted, followed by hours of trying to coax an expensive paper weight back in to life.

Hi Brian, thanks for this - I have a 2015 HRV. I’ve managed to do the first part - (USB in car) and downloaded Garmin Express but when I plug in the USB into my computer to download the maps Garmin Express doesn’t recognise the usb. The usb is new and formatted to FAT32, I’m using a MacBook. I have spent 2 days on this and am really frustrated. I’ve looked in the FAQ’s online and also emailed Honda Customer Support. I updated my maps last year so don’t understand why there is a problem. Can you please help?
Ok I am less inexperienced on MacBook but the first thing i would try is a different USB stick. If you have the Garmin Navigator installed on your MacBook, then go get a new USB with 64gb (just to be safe that there is enough space) and see if the Garmin Navigator can identify the new USB. Have you tried that yet ?
I did this on a MacBook. I had the same problem. Then realised I was using a 2Gig memory Stick. Tried a 16 Gig stick (with some other data on it) and it still didn't work. Went to Argos and bought a new 16 Gig stick for £8 and it worked a treat.

Hi Alan, looks interesting, but unfortunately we no longer sell HONDA brand-new as availability in Ireland seems poor for the product at the moment, as a result I won’t get a chance to see one of those cars to review 🫤🙂
@doolanbrian Wow I'm shocked as your still in the EU as well. Not to worry I will be having a look at one in March as this car claims 620 miles on one tank of fuel and has the same engine as the current CR-V and that delivers 184 bhp and 315Nm of torque they claim its the SUV version of the Civic plus a 0-62 in 7.8 seconds that's quick. I'm sure Brian said he used a 64Gb USB. Garmin Express refused my 64Gb stick, stating 32Gb is the maximum.
I think I'll stick with Google Maps lol

HI I have a 2018 Honda Civic which i have downloaded the garmin/honda map update but it doesn't load up any ideas what might be causing it not to load up
If you have carried out the procedure correctly, sometimes you can get compromised data, In that case I would delete everything of the USB and start from scratch again unfortunately
Thanks for that info. I've got an Australian Honda HR V 2017. The maps are useless!! The usb and hdmi are part of the infotainment system. 1. I want to upgrade the Garmin maps plus I want to screen mirror my Samsung S21 to use Sygic and watch EG. RUclips when I'm waiting for kids in the car. PLEASE, CAN YOU HELP ME?? PS I've spent a fortune buying USB'S and HDMI'S that can fit in their allotted positions. I've yet to get them to work... Also, does it matter if the USB THUMB DRIVE is say 60GB rather than 30GB? Hi there !! The only upgrade on the maps is the one in the video here
I will be honest, the screen mirroring function is something I have never been able to master, we had complaints from people who tried to use it with their android device so unfortunately I am unable to help on this.. we had people who changed their head units to allow them to use a universal head unit which would allow Apple CarPlay and android auto which is a much better set up.

I have tried this several times, but my 2016 Honda Civic does not recognize my newly purchased and Formatted flashdrive. Is there something I need to do to the flashdrive? I've tried two new flashdrives with the same results. Thank you!
Did you try the same brand or different brands? I had this issue before and I had to switch brand of USB , Unfortunately I don’t know why but it definitely worked after the switch
I hAVE Updated my maps in the past, I have a 2016 the last update was in 2019, I had to purchase the maps because my car is more than 5 years old followed all steps but when I go to upload maps into the car it says update failed, I have deleted and reformatted the USB drive twice, downloads all the info to the USB drive no problem but will not upload. Any ideas????
The first thing I will try is a different USB stick.. Unfortunately I can’t tell you why but I have seen this to be an issue.. it may not sort the problem but it’s the first thing I would try …. the second thing I would also try before you upload from a different usb stick is a full radio reset like this ruclips.net/video/y-UtB_Dty6s/видео.html , again I’m not sure if this will help but it’s definitely worth trying

Thank you for watching, unfortunately modern cars are not suitable for using an infotainment system without the engine running, the battery will discharge quickly so I can only recommend that you use the infotainment while the car is running, 🙂✅

Hi sorry I know you posted this ages ago. But do you think I could drive the car whilst it updates? And how long does the install process take to install?
You can drive while it’s updating ! Once you have it set up the update will continue if you begin a journey, it usually took me around 20 minutes to 25 minutes!

Hi, and thank you for the excellent video, which shows how easy it is to install the updates. I have just one question, I know I must insert the usb stick into the car’s usb socket and then turn on the engine before downloading the necessary information and then turn it back off once 60 seconds has elapsed and I’ve removed the usb stick. However, once I’ve inserted the stick into my pc and downloaded the latest updates, do I once again insert the usb pen into the car before starting it or doesn’t it matter? Thanks.

Thanks for your video...I just bought a 2020 Honda Accord Sport 2.0T last week off the lot in Toronto Ontario...it doesn't have navigation system, is it a software to add to head unit, or need new head unit with navigation system?
Thanks for watching ! I would have though that the Sport would have Navigation, does it have smart phone connection for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ?? If it does then you can use google maps which is better than garmin navigation. We dont sell the Accord in Ireland now so i am unfamiliar with your head unit but from what i know, i dont think software can be added for garmin to an existing head unit , does that make sense ?

Your system will be different, I believe that your car has the older system, which uses a CD rather than USB for updates

Hi, I’m in the North Est of England. I have read that some dealers have managed to update the system by using a thumb drive - but that was in the US. I’m very happy with my 2018 CRV but the infotainment system lets it down.
@@so1327 Okay you’re one will be the older model so it’s not possible to update via a factory option, …in the US they had the new model radio by about 2017 which facilitates CarPlay ,
there are people however installing CarPlay into all sorts of vehicles but they are in the aftermarket arena,
Could you tell me if there is an update for the Honda crv 2.2 idtec automatic 2014.
In 2014 the only option available was to buy an upgrade CD/DVD, based on experience I wouldn’t bother buying this as there wasn’t much extra information. Hope this helps.

Hi Brian, I just recently bought a 2016 Civic 1.6 SE Plus, the Head unit doesn't come with Navigation and as far as I can tell, I can't seem to get Android Auto installed on it. Is Navigation or Android Auto just not an option on some models? P.S. Love your videos
Thank you very much for watching🙂🙂🙂, the 2016 model will not have the ability to support android auto or Apple CarPlay unfortunately, also if the car does not have navigation from the factory it is not possible to do an upgrade 😡

My maps are out of warranty. i tried to update them with a 16gb usb stick, but it failed 3 quarter's of the way through, and i got a full message on my pc even though the stick is 16gb it never gave me the chance to purchase the new maps. How can i solve this, please? My dealership got the same issue.

@@skywalkerranch gotcha ok .. have you tried a different USB stick? Maybe even a slightly larger one? 32gb .. just to see if the process will complete on that instead . I have had updates fail before and for no reason I’ve changed USB stick and the second one worked where the first one didn’t🙂👍

Thanks for your swift response. I will look into replacing the USB. The point is, I actually got lucky the first time.
As in I reached the point where the Garmin software was beginning to download on the same USB stick but because the laptop went into hibernation for some few hours as I fell asleep then it stopped hence it couldn’t progress.
I then thought the best solution was to begin over from scratch and this has been a problem, since my other attempts. Will I still be able to carry out the updates though? As I am unsure how many times one could reuse one's car copied information with Garmin software to enable it update because I fear it may have recognized the car information used a few times, do you think please?

I understand , I don’t think that’s a problem , I have used the same usb to update multiple cars , So while you have the opposite problem where you want multiple USBs to update one car, I don’t see why it would make a difference, I don’t think it’s extremely strict, once you get a new USB, keep me posted just to see if it was successful 🙂🙂

Hi Brian. The satnav on my 2015 CRV is blank. All other functions work, ie. phone, audio etc but when selecting Navigation it says Garmin GPS not responding...any ideas? Thanks, Brian K
Sounds strange but the first thing I would do is a factory data reset, go into your settings, look for android, within android scroll down until you see factory data reset.. Does does bring it back to life? It may take about two or three minutes for the radio to restart afterwards

Hello Brian, great information for the updates. Though I have made several efforts to carry out the updates on my HRV vehicle but the Garmin software could not find my 16G USB . Kindly advice for what to do please, despite formatting a few times.

Hello, a question about GARMIN navigation installed on the HONDA CIVIC of 2018, I have a 2018 CIVIC sold by HONDA EUROPE, it has a European reception number, sold by HONDA GERMANY. I was delivered this car with a Garmin navigation to Turkey, and HONDA France tells me that it is not taken under the manufacturer's warranty if I want to install navigation Europe. However, the error comes from HONDA since the car was sold in the HONDA Europe network. What is the installation procedure in Turkish navigation to put European mapping. Hi Brian, Excellent video! 2018 CR-V SE+ Nav. Down loaded no issue and updated ok. However the error message displayed is "GPS is Off" The system is searching for satellites but is not finding them! Currently has me in the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Breast! I'm in Glasgow!
Okay Mark, I would go for a factory data reset, Go into settings, go into android, in there when you scroll down there will be something that says full factory data reset or something similar, I just can’t remember the exact wording and I don’t have a car near me.. once it does a reset you should be back in business .. If not, sometimes people end up with a corrupted file so I would do the update again, to do this Ireys any previous data on the USB stick and start from fresh, but do the research first because I think that could be helpful

What continent do you live in? So for me I can only access European maps if that makes sense
Ahh fair enough, I am in the States. I think I answered my own question though. I unchecked 2/3 of the maps but when I started my car again all 3 were checked. Appears that the Garmin express app will only allow you to have the relevant versions installed on your drive and on the car.

Technically you don’t have to run it but it’s probably better for your battery ! 🙂🙂
In Australia you can update your Garmin maps via usb - ok -
BUT on a 2020 CR-V - you can "NOT" add the Speedcamera option to the system :
It is NOT available from Garmin - and as of today there seams to be no other way to add that feature ???????????

If the car does not have Apple CarPlay from the factory .. there is no honda option to add it afterwards unfortunately, thanks for watching

Hi Folks I have recently bought a 2012 crv 2.2 diesel IDetec. The clock in the square audio sat nav screen resets to 1:00pm every time I restart the vehicle. I can access the clock settings but Western European Time in the top RH side always shows a row of zeros, any ideas.
Also as it is now over 5 years since map update can I still use the Garmin Honda free update system or do I have to buy a new disc? Not sure if relevant but new windscreen has just been fitted, will the new GPS aerial in the top of windscreen have caused the clock problem. Gps does still work ok though.

Hi Paul, unfortunately I can’t be sure of what’s happening with the clock but it sounds like the radio is not memorising, this could be a fault within the board itself , if you want to update the navigation, you need to buy a CD, the only thing I would say however is on that particular unit I think the very last maps were approximately 2014 So I’m not sure if it’s a worthwhile exercise, hope this helps, sorry I couldn’t cope better with the clock issue🙂🙂

If my googling research is correct and ties in with my local Honda garage memo from Honda HQ. There has been a gps sattelite update by the Americans which was corrupted when the date became 1st January 2022. A bit like the millennium bug that was expected at midnight on January 1st 2000. My understanding is that there is no fix but it may fix itself later in the year due to the computer time code at some point rectifying the fault. It's a bit out of my league but it sort of makes sense.

Thank you for your video. I did exactly that again this year on my 2018 CRV Honda, but this time while it was plugged into the suv it came up with the message that the map showed exactly the same as what was on the USB and said that it was recommended not to continue. So I stopped it, how do I continue with yearly updates then? Should I have said “yes “? Hank you.
Linda Morley It’s hard to say without seeing it however the updates don’t happen every single year, so while you can do the update every year, there will be years where there is no new information for your map, if I had to guess, I would say that your map is as up-to-date as currently possible, and you may have to wait until next year to see if there are any further updates, Does that make sense? Thanks for watching !! This update won’t work on your system .. I suspect you need to change your head unit as it is only suitable for use in Japan .. i could be wrong but that’s my understanding of the jdm radio

@@doolanbrian No it doesn't make sense. FROM THE time you first install the USB until you put it back in the second time to do the update, does the car have to be running ?

Dear Brian, I've a 2015 HR-V, I've followed the instructions, Garmin Express proposed me to buy the "City Navigator Europe NTU 2022 Honda BEANs 1.0 Map Update", for €22.75, after 20 minutes the car navi update was done, but now I have no more details on map, at least for Italy.
The navi map info shows:
"OEM Europe DEM"
"OEM CN Europe NTU 2022 Basic 3D"
"OEM CN Europe NTU 2022 ALL North"
It seems that I have only North Europe, and Garmin Express give me no option to download a full Europe map, or to revert to my previous map.

Ok Maurizio, this doesn’t sound good .. so just to confirm .. if you plot a course in eg Germany .. can the map display that map .. in other words .. are the Northern Europe maps working ??? .,. I’m trying to see if the new maps work for Northern Europe ?? Or perhaps they don’t work for anything ??

I did some test, and I noticed that the map update consists on 3 big files:
gmap3d.img
gmapsupp.img
gmapsup1.img
The update goes in the same order, so the last and missing file is gmapsup1.img
At the end (99%) the update ends with an error (I didn't notice that on the first attempt).
So I tried to rename gmapsupp.img in gmapsup1.img and gmapsup1.img in gmapsupp.img, the update give the same error at the end, but now I've the Sud Europe map working.
Maybe there is not enough space in the car navigator internal memory, to hold both maps?

Do you need engine running during update?
Personally yes I think you should leave it running as it would be quite a long time to have the car sitting on accessory mode which might harm the battery🙂✌️

Joshua F I think for the 2013 model you need to buy an update in a CD format, I don’t think you can do it in the same fashion as this Garmin !

I have 2015 civic tourer the sat nav is stuck on the Honda logo and the small circle at the bottom just keeps going round (loading/buffering) there is no audio and no menu options! Can you help ? What can this be ?
Thanks for watching! If it was me I would hold down the on off button for approximately 10 to 15 seconds, in an attempt to restart the Eunice, if it doesn’t restart, you need to visit a dealer if that makes sense?

I’ve never actually used one of them, but I’m pretty sure all you do is take out the old one and put in the new one, the only problem is I think the CD maps end around 2014 so it’s probably pointless upgrading as they will be pretty much the same as your own CD already !
Just got a 2018 crv and I’m trying to update the navigation system and when I click install from garmin express it says “there was an error installing the update” I have formatted the usb flash drive, reinstalled the garmin express, turned the computer on and off and it keeps doing the same? Any suggestions as I already got lost a few times cause of no update
I would try a different USB stick next 🙂

Hi there, depending on your vehicle, it can be between three and five years of free updates , in Ireland, we advised people there were three years of free updates to coincide with the three-year warranty on the vehicle🙂

Completed all the steps. It updated the satnv and then I lost all maps. Now it has a white screen with image not found. Honda CRV 2015. Any help will be very much appreciated.
Never experienced that !! The first thing I would do is powerdown the car and the radio... And then start it back up… It should start up after that .. Have you had any other issues with the radio recently?

I stand to be corrected on this but I’m pretty sure your vehicle will probably require an update via a CD, I would imagine however this CD is probably well outdated at this stage so it’s probably not very beneficial, before 2015 that is my understanding of how it works, we don’t get that model in Ireland so you might have to check with your dealer, Sorry I couldn’t help better

Hi Brian.I have an following problem related to a Honda CRV 2016 model. The car was bought in Turkey but it is used in europe and by default you only get the Turkish Garmin maps. Do you perhapse now if there is a way to add the european maps to the system? I tried to download the latest maps but it only updates the Turkish region.

Hi Marie , that’s a tough one !! 🙈 the update differences according to garmin are the addition of new roads and junctions and speed zones eg if a new route has been built and opened and mapped by garmin , then it will appear on the new maps afterwards . The actual operating menus and software remains unchanged .. The reason I say it’s a tough one is that I do not know of any roads locally that are new to me so they still appear on the old maps too !! Does this make sense ??? Hey thanks for watching Marie 🙂🙂

In Europe we only get this model until 2015 and then it becomes no longer available, models before this year were based on a CD update instead!
