  • Hanging Natural Wallpaper (Grasscloth Wallpaper Install) Tips and techniques to help hang natural wallpaper!
    If you've ever had the pleasure of hanging a natural wallpaper, you already know that its a totally different ballgame than most other wallpapers. No, the technique isn't radically different- but the stakes are considerably higher. Its delicate, stiff, easily stained and can be ruined by getting even the smallest amount of adhesive (or even water!!) on the face.
    On the other hand, its hard to beat the look of a properly installed grasscloth wallpaper! It adds depth and intrigue to any space its in, and can easily transform a room from average to stunning, all on its own.

    I would NEVER hang grasscloth on a wall of such a contrasting or darker colour! Pro tip- use a tinted wall covering primer tinted to match your grasscloth! Much more professional. It shows your clients a high attention to detail. You may never have had issues with wall covering adhering well to the wall, but that's not primer's only purpose; it also makes the wall covering much easier to remove! Also, some pros are using a wallcover liner under unglued, natural coverings. I don't, but try using a tinted primer next time!

    not a fan how the grasscloth doesn't line up at each new line, good application but just wish grasscloth in general can line up well

    Thank you. This video is great. Ques: have you ever worked w/wallpaper thicker and a little bit stiffer than grass cloth, particularly thin bamboo wallpaper?

    • @RefreshHomeImprovements
      @RefreshHomeImprovements  2 года назад

      Can’t say we’ve worked with bamboo specifically- but we’ve done multiple woven silk applications (and this grasscloth was probably the stiffest/thickest wallpaper we’ve ever seen). What specifically was your question?

  • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator

    its very effective.
    do you not use lining paper? That would give you a better surface to hang the finish paper on.

      We don’t, but we’ll definitely look into it in the future 👍

      @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator it also adds cost to your expensive paper. I don't really see the point.

      @@scottsmith5908surely you want the best base you can when hanging expensive wall coverings?
      What do the instructions recommend?
      Lining a room out is a drip in the ocean on costs when it comes to doing higher end work where people are spending a lot on finish wallpapers.

    Quick question please: does this paper really feel like fabric? Thanks again.

    • @RefreshHomeImprovements
      @RefreshHomeImprovements  2 года назад +1

      Kind of! It’s basically woven threads attached to a paper backing, so it has a definite texture to it (but feels stiffer than fabric does) 👍

    What is best medium for textured walls?? Thinking I can lightly sand down my walls. Make it LESS textured, wipe down and apply. No?? I’m an utter novice. Bought an old farmhouse. Very old. Wallpapered years ago-but been awhile and never in textured walls.

    • @RefreshHomeImprovements
      @RefreshHomeImprovements  Год назад

      Great question! Unfortunately, in our experience, the condition of the wall usually shows up THROUGH wallpaper (no matter how dark/thick/patterned the wallpaper is). We spend a bit of time before papering to make sure the wall is in good condition (ie. no screw/nail holes, bumps etc.) because we’ve been burned by skipping this phase before. You COULD get lucky with a thorough sanding and a thicker wallpaper- but we’d be remiss if we didn’t advise against it. Perhaps test a small area and see if you like how it looks. Otherwise, you could skim coat the walls, prime them thoroughly and then wallpaper 👍

    I am hanging grasscloth. I have a wall with a entrance opening into another room. No wall trim at entrance. I am thinking of starting on that verticle section for a clean line. Help!

    • @RefreshHomeImprovements
      @RefreshHomeImprovements  3 года назад +2

      Hey! We’d advise against that as a starting point. You can run into trouble with the other side of the opening if you don’t map it out first (also, you’ll have to cut one side of the opening regardless, so you’re not actually saving THAT much work by using the factory edge on one side). Here’s a better way: take a measurement of the width of your roll and do a quick layout first. Start in the corner and subtract about an inch so that you can wrap your first corner slightly to make up for any waviness (most corners are not perfectly square). From there, make marks at the measurement you got (width of the roll), and see how it lines up at your entrance. If you notice that your current layout leaves you with a tiny sliver of a piece on either side of the entrance, you’ll know you need to shift your starting piece over to avoid being left with a difficult piece in a tricky spot. Play around with your layout until you have a nice amount of overlap on both sides of your entrance for easy cutting 👍

      One side of the roll is darker than the other. Mark cuts top/bottom and alternate. Joints will be less visible. Well hung tho nice job

    Wish you would’ve covered how you do the corners. Grass paper is not flexible and those corners are the biggest problems.

  • @SommerMark

    What kind of primer do you use?

    • @RefreshHomeImprovements
      @RefreshHomeImprovements  Год назад

      Some wallpaper adhesives will require a specific undercoat before applying the wallpaper- but in our experience, in most cases any high quality latex primer will be fine. If you want to be on the safe side, using an oil/solvent based primer will ensure you avoid any issues when also using a water based glue for wallpapering (but to be totally honest, we’ve never had any issues when applying wallpaper over latex primers/paints). There are lots of specific primers designed for wallpaper applications (their function is to both help with adhesion, but also to allow for easier wallpaper removal), so with all things being equal, if you know you’ll be wallpapering a specific wall, you might invest in a wallpaper primer like this one 👉 www.homedepot.ca/product/zinsser-shieldz-acrylic-wall-primer-and-size-in-clear-946-ml/1000166759

    do u overlap the wallpaper..?

    • @RefreshHomeImprovements
      @RefreshHomeImprovements  3 года назад +1

      Not with this particular wallpaper. Some wallpapers will have you do what’s called a double cut where you do overlap the sheets- but the instructions on the roll will tell you exactly what to do. Most natural wallpapers call for a simple butt joint application because their surface is so delicate, you really can’t allow any adhesive to get on the face of the wallpaper (so overlapping isn’t usually an option).

      The material this paper is made from is incredibly susceptible to staining from glue/water, hence they don’t call for a double cut/overlapped joint. Always best to follow the instructions on the paper you’ve got 👍
