I was visiting S. korea at the time. As a result of this massive peaceful protests, the former President Park was impeached. Protests continued throughout the cold winter, until they finally got the impeachment result. They brought their own bags to pick up trashes. They marched down holding a candle as a symbol of Light. Streets were left clean as normal days. Protesters even protected police force by their body chains, when some protesters attempted to throw stones at police. Some violent protesters were yelled at and quieted by the majority of protesters. No tear gas, no clashes, and no destructions. I saw many protesters with their kids. It was like family outings. I heard they wanted to teach their kids about democracy. Many store owners on the streets opened up their restroom for the protesters to use. Some of them even passed out water bottles. The scene felt like festival events with songs and performances of all kinds. But the unifying voices of the people were clearly delivered. It was the most remarkable scene I’ve ever experienced in my life.
Unfortunately, since the new administration took over, the incompetent office made a huge economic decline that set back centuries of economic growth, as well as deteriorating international relarionships with partnering countries like Japan and the US. Not only that, but self-acclaiming propaganda and socialist fascist influences were put upon the country, as well as evident cases of rigged major elections that mark an even worse effort of corruption and incompetence of the new office. While the previous administration did have its faults, the collective protests are usually the results of well-organized plannings of the new administration, which they weaponize to impose super socialist (even close to communism in some ways) decisions recklessly, while being 'justified' for their collective cause. Everything turned out for the worse... Even the recent success in Korea's effort against COVID-19, isn't due to the effort of the administration as they like to advertise: it is the group of researchers and companoes that had to deny and protest against the administration's claims that there would be no need for special preparation. After all, it is the administration that never closed its international borders, which caused Korea to be the top 2nd country with the most cases. Everything only got silenced due to those who protested against Moon.

This only works because South Korea is homogeneous; Asians are traditional, family oriented, and focus on education. In contrast, America is to racially and culturally divided. You can’t have Blacks, Whites, Asians, Latinos, Arabs, Indians and Natives to think the same and behave peacefully.
@@mouseinthehouse9750, why you gotta make it about race? South Korea has a very short history(73 years) of democracy, but most of them were consisted of dictatorship and suppression.(There were three dictators who led Korea for 41 years lol) and even the presidents who were elected in a total democratic manner also have done mindless things that still put Korea in trouble now, for example president Lee(2008~2013) has spent billions of dollars repairing the facilities at the biggest rivers in Korea, but failed and even turned them into the most polluted rivers in Korea because he used the money for his private business. However, nowadays most of the citizens are educated to protect democracy and not to allow corruption, Korea now became able to carry out one of the greatest demonstrations in modern history of democracy. Previous president Park(Actually we can't call her as 18th president now. She was erased from the list) was impeached for not only being such an asshole, but also offending many of the provisions in the constitution. Also the press (except JTBC) was keeping silent about the crime she committed. The citizens knew that they needed a huge turning point in this country. The evidence for the impeachment was mostly accomplished by common people, such as exposures of witnesses. That's the core of what we can learn from Korea 2016.
One more thing, President Lee that I mentioned above was arrested yesterday, for offending fairness in national policy. This was also affected by citizens' movement that was spread throughout the internet. There is a company named DAS which was the main location where the corruption happened, and when the politicians tried to conceal the tiny evidence that may throw Lee into dishonor, a lot of netizens disclosed the case by writing comments like "So whose is DAS?" all over the internet. The press then started to report this issue importantly, and now he is in the prison! Even the former president can be punished and sent to jail in Korea. I suppose this is quite different from Japan, and China, where people are less interested in politics than Korea. When I look into Korean internet, I somewhat get confused by the fact that so many people have so many harsh arguments in many different places about the politicians they dislike, but I also feel positive about how these common people consider politics very important.

True democracy is when people do whatever is necessary to achieve peace and justice. Not saying looting or violence is good, but when institutions are forcibly upended, violence comes. In protest to high taxes and systematic violence, revolutionaries dressed as Native Americans, raided Boston Harbor, and dumped the equivalent of a million dollars of tea into the ocean. Most of the protests in America are peaceful? As for the small percentage of rioters... compare South Korea's COVID response to America's. That's all you need to know about how the two countries operate. One actually cares for its people, the other only cares about the stock market. I mean that's how Korea is still strong. South Korea is actually smaller than some state in America but they are big in a way. They diss eachother daily but when problem comes up they group like a family.
That’s the problem though. We Americans don’t “see” each other as “family.” We’re all different but we haven’t fully overcome them yet. The problem is that people only see “race” and not as fellow citizens. Our divisions lay everywhere, be it age, culturally, religion, race, political views, wealth and class. “The United States?” We ain’t even united. For years, all I’ve seen are continued separation of group. Divide and conquer? We need to “Unite and Build.” But yes, that IS so MUCH to ask. Every US citizen is so individualistic that it cannot be organized in a peaceful fluid way. Majority of us all have nothing in common except the fact that we are “Americans.” That we are suppose to be united no matter our differences. And sadly we all keep forgetting that. The sons of daughters of liberty are meaningless without justice and unity. But I do not give up my faith that America can change for the better.
Gen C What’s worse is that it’s mostly looters who start the fires and riots. Peaceful protestors try to get their message across and be peaceful, but many douchebags take advantage of the movement to steal stuff they’re not supposed to. I was so proud of Korea while at the same time feeling a bit of shame while remembering how people have acted in protests in my own country. What must the Koreans think when they see how we are willing trash our own countries as a protest.
There’s a saying by the late US President, John F. Kennedy: “Those who make a peaceful revolution impossible make a violent one inevitable.” Clearly, the South Korean govt didn’t make a peaceful demand for change impossible. Their voices were heard, so in this country and in this case, a peaceful revolution worked. Violence is sometimes necessary (in my opinion), but this was not one of those times.

They don’t have to worry about guns and people getting shot... that eliminates a lot of the anxiety.. I wouldn’t want my children going into an American riot... but Korea, it’s extremely safe
Korean protests are peaceful not because of gun control. It has nothing to do with guns. In the past Korean protests were very violent as well but in a democratic society violent protests aren’t needed and we’ve grown out of that. America on the other hand will find it hard to reach that level mainly because western liberals pity the rest of the world and think of themselves as morally superior by sympathizing and justifying the rioters.
TheAnalysis2 I said it removes a lot of the anxiety, not that it is the only reason why they are peaceful... And when you mention past demonstrations in Korea being violent, are you referring to (for example) Gwangju in the early 80s? Correct me if I’m wrong, but Korea was a military dictatorship (and not a democracy) until ‘87. Please double check your history and facts. After the people achieved democracy, Koreans have used their rights pretty peacefully, and don’t behave like Americans.
America also tried that but y’all wouldn’t know anything about the peaceful protest that MLK lead in the 1960s because y’all don’t wanna research anything before you open your mouths. They were hosed down, (some actually died) people spat in they’re faces, BEAT THEM HALF TO DEATH. The peaceful protesting finally ended when they killed the leader of the peaceful protesting (shot him in the head) and that’s when the rioting started. Our nations are completely different. What works in your nation won’t work in ours. And I’ll also remind you that when we did peaceful protest against our president, nothing changed. He’s still in office. So that should tell you something 😂😂😂.
@@ismayonnaiseaninstrument491 You say these people are speaking before they do their research, yet it seems like you've become very certain that it won't work in America without doing your research of protests in Korea. The protest of democratic uprising of May 18, 1980 was literally a masacre. Soldiers were shooting down protesters who had no guns or whatsoever. The protest couldn't even be spread through the media because the president censored all of them. Yet, here we are, protesting peacefully, knowing that it has stronger message than violence. I'm not saying that the same will certainly work there, but please don't judge that we protest like that because we've never desperately fought to make our voices.

@Rhayne Lyte look dear, this is a big portion of what's wrong with this country; The portion whom think they know what's best for others through violence or think that they're better than other humans for some "birthright" reason, feeding injustice directly. It's the same thing with those who are looting stores, they think that they can take advantage of these protest because they think that they are entitled to luxury items, then others follow them like a herd because they don't really care about equality but rather themselves at the moment. So you are showing that you don't care for equality or simply lack empathy for some psychological reason because you think that, "the whole lot of [people doing protest in america] should be put down." Honestly, do you want to see more blood and brutality on the streets because people had enough blood and meaningless death and brutality? If you mean to be humane in nature, you should start thinking "we should work harder to cleanse the spirits of stress and anger on the streets by doing what's correct, blood should not be spilled meaninglessly, nor life lost to another human by cruel and unreasonable actions. We must change this country's mindset and systems for the better once and for all, if we are to survive this pandemic together." The reason protestors are being violent is because; Police have been arresting journalists for *QUOTE* "Being with CNN" and did not release them until CNNs CEO called the governor of Minnesota and threatened him. Police have been shooting rubber bullets at journalists for no reason. Police go up to people's cars and shatter the windows and slash the tires and taze them 3 times for not getting out of the car while physically denying them from opening the door. Also, few decades ago we protested for our civil rights due to dictators who didn't promise democracy to the people. In the beginning it wasnt always this peacful, there were protesters(mainly university students) who were tortured and mysteriously killed by the police. There were severe amount of violence that wee invoked by the police in the protest itself too. This has always been a problem and since then, the people and the police has found peace with it. Our peaceful protests are a result of painful but thankful history from what the former generation had paved. I just wanted to acknowledge that.
The allies had a lot to thank Korea for since Korea fought Japan tooth and nails and launched offensives, bombings, and assassinations against the Jaoanese.

We can learn a lot from South Korea.
Lol.. look up the history of what has happened to their presidents.
Thank you☺
South Korea has a very short history(73 years) of democracy, but most of them were consisted of dictatorship and suppression.(There were three dictators who led Korea for 41 years lol) and even the presidents who were elected in a total democratic manner also have done mindless things that still put Korea in trouble now, for example president Lee(2008~2013) has spent billions of dollars repairing the facilities at the biggest rivers in Korea, but failed and even turned them into the most polluted rivers in Korea because he used the money for his private business.

No political change has come peacefully in the United States, violence, anger, murder, and numerous other things are the causation and result of meaningful political change and ideological revolution. It is not until the platform of the powerful is threatened through outrageous acts, that real change will come.
There have been massacres in the past where a whole city was killed. That was along time back. Sad though.

That’s the problem though.
We Americans don’t “see” each other as “family.” We’re all different but we haven’t fully overcome them yet.
The problem is that people only see “race” and not as fellow citizens.

But yes, that IS so MUCH to ask.
Every US citizen is so individualistic that it cannot be organized in a peaceful fluid way.
Majority of us all have nothing in common except the fact that we are “Americans.” That we are suppose to be united no matter our differences. And sadly we all keep forgetting that.

Nahh not really. As Korean we tried to make it peaceful as possible cuz ppl who does not agree with this protest will just gain more power. Like if us protesters keep up what they are doing rn then the racists will be just get more prejudice and more conservative
Koreans are more united because everyone is the same race. They see each other as family with the culture, traditions, and ideas. America is divided because of multiculturalism, people don’t trust each other, self segregate, and have different cultures, different ideas, people just can’t relate with one another.

No, they don't.
@MK JOE well.. yea, they surely was against the authority quite violently back then, because you could die protesting. There was torturing, gunshooting, killing. But they never looted some random hair salons or supermarkets to get some items.
I attended these protests, not to protest myself but just to witness it. I was amazed at how civilised it was. No violence, no damage to property and open to all people including kids. I was so proud of Korea while at the same time feeling a bit of shame while remembering how people have acted in protests in my own country. What must the Koreans think when they see how we are willing trash our own countries as a protest.
Appalled
Yeah its embarrassing
There’s a saying by the late US President, John F. Kennedy:
“Those who make a peaceful revolution impossible make a violent one inevitable.”
Clearly, the South Korean govt didn’t make a peaceful demand for change impossible. Their voices were heard, so in this country and in this case, a peaceful revolution worked. Violence is sometimes necessary (in my opinion), but this was not one of those times.
I was there too, we were singing together, having mini-concerts, making a giant 'wave' by putting candles in the air, etc. It was truly remarkable, almost surreal. I think this experience has left something in all of us who were there - a lasting sense of empowerment, unity, and responsibility.
this is truly South Korea, always work hard to make things look ideal and create an ideal society image of devoted and nice enthusiastic ppl..

This is a protest. United in goal, civil and considered toward others. But you cannot really expect that from many countries. The Korean are a special people.
Yes agreed.. But Americans are not united. Those looters and radical protestors are another kind.. Some Americans have disciplined, many dont have.. ,😅✌️
Wow now that’s what I call a protest with class.
Their culture is so amazing. I love them. 💕
South Korea, your resolve and unwaivering faith to your victory have been admirable. mansae.
This is the most peaceful protest in south korea, no guns no violence just use candles and inflatable sharks
This is what a protest demand, unity with peace. Other country should take it as a example. Voilence is of no use when you want your thing to get accepted.
They don’t have to worry about guns and people getting shot... that eliminates a lot of the anxiety.. I wouldn’t want my children going into an American riot... but Korea, it’s extremely safe
First of all u shouldn't bring children into protest anyway
This is what a protest should look like, Americans should take notes instead of burning some store down

American protests are normally peaceful. This one is different and that’s why it’s all over the news. This isn’t about a corrupt government official. We’re protesting for police to stop getting away with murdering innocent people. The violence didn’t start with citizens, it started with the police
Rhayne Lyte how do you know what race they are lmao? Unless by “lot of you” you’re implying killing human beings off wholesale, might be inclined to agree with you there. Just a reminder, you’re a human being with agency! Why don’t you just go through your own town today and slaughter people as you see fit? I’m certain no one would see fit to do anything about it and then you can make it back here and tell me how you did! After all, the universe revolves around you and your beliefs
We must change this country's mindset and systems for the better once and for all, if we are to survive this pandemic together."
Blessed be your soul with grace, your mind with clarity, understanding, and unity, and your body with health and immunity from the virus.
I am not good at english, but I want to say something about this mass protest in South Korea. We have a experience of peaceful protest, which is called 3.1 independence movement about 100 years ago. We were colonized by the Empire of Japan, then so many people were taken advantage of as soldiers, workers, etc. Now, We face the biggest national politic scandal. Many citizens are protesting against Park with precious experience for her resignation. On December 3rd, I was there, and press announced that it was the largest protest among 6 protest that have been happend during one month. about 1.7 million people gathered to Gwang Hwa square, and it was 2.3 million people in whole country. Thanks to this, I was able to see what democracy is, and I also felt being brave, not frustrated. I hope that we can last this protest in piece until president Park step down. And I also hope that South Korean will be able to live in free, rational, and prosperous country. Thank you for your reading this despite of my low english skill. I hope you all the best.
Thanks ^^

I don't know why protesters in America behave violently. they are from the same country though. Anyways, I want American protesters to respect each other and be safe. Greetings from Seoul.
The reason protestors are being violent is because;
Police have been arresting journalists for *QUOTE* "Being with CNN" and did not release them until CNNs CEO called the governor of Minnesota and threatened him.
Police have been shooting rubber bullets at journalists for no reason.
Police go up to people's cars and shatter the windows and slash the tires and taze them 3 times for not getting out of the car while physically denying them from opening the door.
Police shot tear gas at peaceful protestors so Trump could take a picture.
Police shoved an elderly man to the curb where he bled to death as they stopped anyone from aiding him, and after the officer that pushed him was suspended, 57 other officers resigned because they felt that the man was a threat and dealt with properly.

As a South Korean we have a long history of protesting. It leads back to the era when Japan conquered Korea. We fought to get our country back.
By the time WW2 rolled over in the Pacific, the Japanese army had so many inexperienced officers because they quickly replaced the experienced ones that the Koreans killed.

It’s a homogenous society!! Is one reason. Another is they’ve been raised to be respectful!
Also the police didn't shoot at CNN journalists, and arrest them "for being from CNN", releasing them after the CEO of CNN threatened the governor of Minnesota.
Also the police didn't fire tear gas at peaceful protestors so their dear president could take a picture in front of a Church holding a Bible upside down.
Also the police didn't shoot at people that were on their own porch for violating the curfew, which hadn't even started yet.
Also the police didn't shove an elderly man into a curb and left him to die there while stopping anyone from going to aid him, and then being disgusted because people thought that the officers should face a penalty for the murder.
Also the police didn't go to people randomly and shatter their car windshield and physically stop them from leaving their car, and then taze them 3 times for not leaving the car, while one of them slashed the tires on the car.
But naw, it's all because they're homogeneous.
