  • South Korea’s rapid transformation into one of the richest countries in the world, has left women trailing behind.
They are paid on average a third less than men, giving South Korea the worst gender pay gap of any rich country in the world.
Upon entering office, South Korea's new President Yoon Suk-yeol scrapped government gender quotas, declaring people would be hired on merit, not sex.
He is now trying to abolish the government's Gender Equality Ministry, which supports women and victims of sexual assault, claiming it is obsolete.
More than 800 organisations have come together to protest against the closure, arguing it could have a damaging impact on women's lives.
Warning: this contains distressing content and discusses sexual assault and attempted suicide.

it's true. men aren't only competing amongst men like they used to, but amongst women too. it saturates the job market. men used to earn more money because there were more jobs available. and women used to happily not work because the men earned enough for the family to live comfortably. it's basic history that liberals try to ignore in the name of 'equality'

I know very well your inner thoughts, spewing out Western chauvinism and Asian hatred in the name of feminism. The hypocrisy of the Western media, the BBC, has already been widely known to non-Western circles, starting with its failure to properly report the massacre of Palestinian children. For several years now, some extreme feminists in Korea have used distorted facts to foreign countries as their main method of struggle. However, in the end, it only became an outpouring of disdain for Korea by Western supremacist racists. Since Korea has surpassed many Western countries and become a developed country, they are feeling anxious and are now showing off their superiority with things like 'women's human rights.' Isn't it? If you look at reports on Korean feminism reported in foreign media, most of them are seriously distorted. Since Korea's internal situation is relatively unknown even among non-Western countries, most Westerners consume KPOP and then define Korea however they want after watching a bit of distorted RUclips or media information.

Korea's low birth rate problem is not just a problem of men's exploitation of women, but there are more fundamental problems such as labor issues, but simply blaming this on Korean men's misogyny and patriarchy is not only lacking in social scientific insight, but also full of prejudice. . And it is arrogant because you are making a light judgment about a country you don't know much about. Of course, there are misogynists in Korea who have such opinions. Any criticism of them is labeled ‘misogyny’ and ignored. Don’t you think you’ve seen this somewhere? 'Opposition to anti-Semitism' itself is fundamentalists who block opinions with correct words!

Well, it's quite understandable why birth rates are so low.

    • @Yuigahama_Yui
      @Yuigahama_Yui 3 месяца назад

The reason why Korean men's housework hours are low in the world is because most Korean couples are dual-income households. It is a false statement to say that just based on housework hours alone, the level of Korean men's participation in housework is similar to that of underdeveloped countries.
Domestic experts in Korea point to the fact that most of the advanced facilities in Korea are concentrated in Seoul, leading to an excessively high population density, as a cause of Korea's low birth rate. It is not very related to the issue of women's rights that Westerners claim.
Although I am Asian, I acknowledge that Westerners have progressive thinking when it comes to technical and creative thinking. However, Westerners are a group that cannot think logically when dealing with women's rights and PC-related issues.
They do not understand at all the problems that Asian countries have, yet they are trying to fit Asian countries into their own mold.

Korea ranks 11th in the UN Gender Equality Index, and spends 310 billion dollors annually on its gender-responsive budget. Because men go through two years of forced labor, women of the same age are promoted two years earlier. I don't think women are a country superior to men, but women in Korea are much better than Americans.
Men commit suicide 10 times more than women, get promoted two years later, and the highest-income medical and toothpaste departments are forced to hire twice as many women. In the case of teachers, a high-income occupation, the proportion of women is more than 80%, but they say that it is desirable and that more women in science and engineering should be selected. Although less than half the number of women studying science is mandated to be employed equally.
Even if a South Korean man claims to have been raped by a woman he has never actually met, he is presumed guilty and has to fight in court for years and live on the streets for the rest of his life, never having a job again.

It means that they have just pour down all the taxes to nothing but a 'Girls tea party'. Gender Equality? If that is the thing ministry was supposed to do, they truly have to be abolished. Cause they have done nothing about gender equality issues of Korea. When the mayor of Seoul City was charged for sexually abusing his secretary for years what they do was just busy to cover up the mayor's dirty issues. (Because that mayor was from same Party of the ministry members.) And they said they have assisted lots of civil organization tries their best to improve gender equality, but it tuns out that most of the organization did nothing but wasting taxes and that ministry never have track down their activity. It means that they have just pour down all the taxes to nothing but a 'Girls tea party'. (They actually handed out the activity list full of 'Watching gender issue movie with members, Reading gernder issue novel with members, Eating snacks and teas with gender issue committee' things on the 'parliamentary inspection of the administration' 🤣🤣) And most of all, they named themselves as 'Ministry of Gender Equality' but they mentioned nothing about the issues of Mandatory Military Services of Male. (Actually they named their 'English Name' as 'Ministry of Gender Equality' but their regular Korean name is '여성가족부 Ministry of Feminine-Family issues.)

@@nocontender6409 Well, let's talk about the sources. The woman in this video claimed that a certified medical professional, in a clinic that is supposed to help victims, after examining her claims, told her she is delusional.
Now, who are we to believe, this woman or the doctor? We don't know, could be either way, could be truth to both. But why does this story just assume that woman is telling the truth? That's not how journalism is done.
It should be the job of the news agency to provide links to the full names of the people mentioned, and as many materials as possible. Meanwhile, they deliberately are not showing it, instead referring to her as Ana, making fact checking a more difficult process than it needs to be.
I have went ahead and found the print of this news on the BBC website, it does mention that professor went to jail, at least, but it still doesn't mention her full name. But guess what, in the following paragraph, well, just read it:
"... This was the case for 50-year-old Shin Hyung-jung, who used to work as an administrator at a school. "
So they CAN credit age and full name when they want to. Why not do so for Ana? It's not like she's hiding her identity, she clearly is a public figure, and there must be public records of the court case.
To quote just this news story:
3:39 "Recent attempts to improve women's lives have angered the young men here, who claim they are now victims of reverse discrimination"
Now, this is very particularly phrase, I'm sure you can notice it. When women protest, it's not "angry young women", they're just "attempting to improve their lives". But "angered young men" only "claim" "they are now victims of reverse discrimination".
Do you not find this at least plausibly biased reporting? Do you not feel like this is framing the narrative just a little bit? Why don't we trust the men instead. Or, indeed, why don't we at least hear their case?
5:44 "The government says its services will be protected, but that it;s time to support women and men equally".
I'm all for sources and verifiable facts, but then keep your standards for both ways. Demanding sources from one side while blindly trusting the other is disingenuous. There's no substance in this report, nothing to constructively discuss, it's either just a lazy pity views grab, or a propagandist piece, not real journalism.
If we aggregate the information, we can see that BOTH men and women claim they are being discriminated against, and that the current president is winning by supporting the men, which means he probably has the support of the majority, unless you are willing to question South Korea's democracy.
Removing the gender quotas is a move that reduces sexism, but increases inequality. The fact that women protesters are arguing for political quotas and are in the political minority are red flags for me. But, realistically, I imagine there are indeed many issues of discrimination.
Overall, we need to hop on some online chat and talk to many actual South Koreans about this.

The truth is the errors you pointed out _may well_ indicate what you claim, and because that possibility exists further investigation should be performed before conclusions are drawn. What I can say is that no examples have been given here about "lowering equality for men". If there were, as a woman, I would vehemently oppose any mistreatment or suppression of men, just as I would that of women. But in the article you mention, the administrator did go to jail. Did the article detail his crime, and did it match up with the accusation Ana made in the video?
I should mention, I am completely willing to question the democracy of any nation that claims to be democratic, including my own. As should be anyone who values true democracy. Systemic, institutionalized, and marginalizing oppression exists all over the world. That subjects any and all societies to further assessment.

the same. On the contrary, since men have to serve in the military for two years, women advance into society more quickly and are promoted. Even in the workplace, the night job, which is the target of avoidance, is obligatory only for men, and not for women. Also, even in
demanding places such as distribution centers, men receive almost the same wages as women and have to do much tougher work. And even in public service recruitment, like the police, women
are given preference on a lower standard. Now, tell me specifically why you are discriminated against in Korea. From my point of view, you are a person who sees false information and speaks

Our country's feminism doesn't even align with the PC culture that foreigners love, because it's actually female supremacist ideology. How can a country be discriminatory against women when we have women's safe return home routes, women-only subway cars, priority seats for pregnant women, and women-only parking lots? It's a fact that we had a patriarchal society decades ago when Korea was a developing country. But women born in our now-developed nation still cry out about living in a patriarchal society. If we're such an equal country, women should serve in the military too. It's only natural since there are fewer military personnel as women aren't having children. It's wrong to solely blame men for women not having children. There are actually various complex reasons for this. The Ministry of Gender Equality wastes our tax money and even gives support payments to women engaged in illegal prostitution. Is this really what foreigners think a society that discriminates against women looks like?

They said no because men work in dangerous and dirty conditions all the time. Wives were invited (I was a single dude then). As we sat down on the ondo floor for the meal, I was surprised that the wives didn’t join. For wives to serve food is pretty normal. This happens for example in all Muslims families and they shouldn't normally stay in the same room as strange men who they are not related to.
Some Muslims are even so strict that the wives are not allowed to come in at all, and so the men cook their own food separately, but in most cases, the women cook the food, especially if they are housewives.
However, women don't carry heavy bags for Muslim men when going shopping. That's what the men are there for. So that seems a bit strange

If we're such an equal country, women should serve in the military too. It's only natural since there are fewer military personnel as women aren't having children. It's wrong to solely blame men for women not having children. There are actually various complex reasons for this. In addition, the quota of medical, pharmacy, and law schools for doctors, pharmacists, and judges, who are called elite in Korea, is much more favorable to women. This is because these departments were concentrated in women's universities.

Third, in Korea, a man can be arrested, prosecuted, and tried for a sex crime only with a woman's statement. In this process, male speech is thoroughly excluded. Korean law applies the principle of judicial evidence and giving priority to the interests of the defendant when it is unfavorable, but these two do not apply to sexual crimes.

Fourth, Korean women have the right not to do dangerous things.
Even when serving as police officers or firefighters, they perform comfortable inside jobs, and in the case of soldiers, they have the right to be excluded from rigorous training, and it is only up to men to arrest criminals or put out fires. Also, among general office workers, they are excluded from night duty. Also, there is a special leave system called menstruation leave for women. (Of course, 90% of these holidays are taken on Friday and Monday days. LOL)

Fifth, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, which is now being abolished, does not exist in your country. Does your country have a ministerial level for women? As far as I know, Korea and New Zealand are the only ones. They aroused controversy by saying that All Korean men are potential sex offenders, so they are obliged to prove their innocent. In addition, they abolished the public service bonus point system for men serving in the military. They also pay tax money to hire lawyers for women who have been accused of innocence. Now you can understand why feminists are so eager to oppose abolition.

These women are more prone to becoming victims of violence and exploitation also at a higher rate, and these women have no resources to protect themselves or get help.

I am korean female. I honestly find both sides victims cause i also think men are mis treated too for ex they have too do army duty, most dangerous jobs are done by men, if a man’s assaulted people rarely bats an eye and thinks its a joke but when woman gets slightly harassed everyone bats an eye, and more. Like i think job requirements should be same for both genders like firefighters and police cause we don’t need representation we need the most skilled people to save people. And Salary and job hiring should be based on skilled not by gender just that your woman and saying u didn’t pick cause i am woman no it’s because u weren’t skilled enough for example my aunt is a hard working person and she earns a lot of money because she is smart and skilled. Like i heard the government is cleaning dirty houses for free only for ‘women’ and gives them money(the money that we give our taxes). The government pay female strippers to stop their job jut most of them say they quit it and do it again… (our taxes) do u call that equal? It should be both genders if its equal. I find this dumb its kinda like the all black people are good and all white people must be misogynistic thing going in some places yes some people might be god some people might be misogynistic but not all are same goes for gender not all men are sexual harassers and not all women are kind. For one news star bucks was giving free coffee event for people who went to the military mostly male so some women were like why are u giving free coffee only for men (its because they did the military service which is not a easy thing and u could die) so they had to stop the event it’s honestly dumb.they should make services for both genders honestly.

Bro, im korean just trust me. There's no discrimination against women in Korea. If anything, discrimination against men is more prevalent. I hate that foreigners judge Korea as a misogynistic country based on superficial observations.

S.K is looking at falling into the same pitfall as the west, propogandising it as misogny is weird. It should be quoted that these men that are "blaming women" are complaing about the QUOTAS thats the issue not the fact that women have been r***d or sexuall assualted. Funny how changing a few words and taking things out of context works as effective propoganda rather than reporting the actual issue.

It cannot be denied that there was discrimination against women in past generations. However, what we have to do is not to discriminate against women, not to start discriminating against men to achieve the total amount of discrimination. Whether it is black discrimination, it is the same racism. Likewise, whether discrimination against women or discrimination against men is the same sex discrimination.
Discrimination and preferential treatment are like the two sides of a coin. Preference given to someone can become a discrimination inflicted on someone else. The women's quota system and advantage, as well as various preferential treatment, do not benefit women of the past generation who were actually discriminated against, this is just cycle that creates new discrimination and conflict.
In the past, feminists insisted not to discriminate against sex and to see themselves as equals rather than as women. However, these days, some feminists who insist on women's benefits insist that they be seen as women, not as equals. Those who shouted to stop sex discrimination actively want sex discrimination in areas where they benefit. That is the essence and limit of feminism in Korea. Feminists are no longer gender egalitarians. Ironically, they cause sex discrimination more than any other.
