What is YOUR favorite cheap eat in Kauai? Topher's Timecodes: (0:15) - Ono Ono Shave Ice - Great shave ice (1:32) - Garden Island Barbecue - Traditional Hawaiian Mix Plate (2:00) - Bubba's Burgers - Kauai Burger with Pineapple (2:40) - Puka Dog with spice and fruity sauces (3:28) - Costco Food Court - $1.50 Hot Dogs (3:43) - Savage Shrimp - Garlic Shrimp Plate (4:34) - Kalapaki Beach Hut - Burgers and Taro Chips (4:50) - Sleeping Giant Grill - Grilled Fish Plate or Kalbi Plate (5:40) - Coconuts Fish Cafe - Fish Tacos, Fish and Chips, Coconut Shrimp
My favorite for grinds at the north shore is Calypso in Hanalei Happy hour from 3-7 weekdays pupus and drinks. Massive nachos $8 , Coconut shrimp $10, plus $3 Beers and $6 mixed exotic drinks. Also local favorite is Hamuras in Lihue. Saimin with BBQ Teriyaki sticks Under $10 . This will 'break your mouth'.
We love ONO ONO. When we visit Kauai, we stay at the Pono Kai resort which is right next to ONO ONO. It’s a daily habit for our family when we’re in Kauai every two years.
Oh man, I want to eat at all of the places you covered. It’s great that you have the name of the venue listed, that’s a special touch that not many YTers take the time to do, I appreciate it Thank you Chris/Yellow Guy!
I was in Kauai last week. Our favorite places to eat were Bubba Burgers, Puka Dog, L&L bbq for plate lunches, and a red food truck in Kapa'a called Al Pastor Tacos where we had the best fish tacos on the island. for shave ice, Ono Ono was our favorite. Oh, and you can't forget about Costco. We ate there twice.
Thank you, Chris, for all your recommendations. I'm sitting here right now at Bubba Burger in Kaua'i and loved it. Your Videos made this Trip so much better!
My absolute favorite place on Kauai to eat is oki’s box lunches and omiyage in the food court of kukui grove mall. It’s takeout only but there are tables in front of it. The lady that owns and runs it was so sweet, welcoming, and talkative. The food was amazing and only around $10
I haven't seen your travel videos for several months. You did a good improvement - added English subtitles. The other good thing is your viewers is getting more than before. Congratulation ! When I first watched your channel, I did not know why the viewers were so so few. I like your informative travel videos indeed. Keep up your good job!
In regards to the Hawaiian garlic shrimp (which I love), it's traditional to put the shrimp in your mouth and suck off the garlic and butter, then eat the shrimp peeled or unpeeled. Very Asian and yummy! Your video is making me miss Kaua'i even more!
I was just in Kauai over Easter. Tiki's Tacos is INCREDIBLE, and super affordable (like $6-8 for a single taco that is big enough to be a whole meal for many people). For those who are allergic to gluten, this place is almost entirely gluten-free. The tacos are made with a soft corn taco shell that is gluten-free and made fresh in store.
Locals fav's were our best eats. Personally, I like the combo plate from Whalers General Store in Anahola. Great food, big portions and reasonable prices. Most excellent Poke!!! with bowls ranging $8-$12...Hawaiian Plate lunch $9-$11. Fed us for two meals as it was more than we could eat, yet really delicious. Grabbed a $4 jar of kimchee for heavenly bliss and $2 2 liter bottles of water keeping us hydrated throughout the day. The server showed his tattoos telling stories of ocean voyage on traditional boat. Yeah, I liked Whaler's...near the $20/night church Kumu camp where we stayed next to the beach...amazing!!! Tip top in Lihue is a local tradition with amazing oxtail soup ($10). I had the munchies after exploring Waimea canyon so we stopped along the road at an old place (Umi's?) where the spam is spiced perfectly in the Musubi (only a buck or two) and kept warm in a moist heat counter top cabinet. I had no idea spam rice and seaweed could taste that good! Forget the tourist traps. Ask the locals.
My favorite is the veggie burger at the kalapaki grill. Ono shave ice in kapaa town my favorite shave ice flav is popcorn. There's a Ono burger stand in Anahola at the Anahola mini Mart.. favorite burger is the blue cheese, for me! Puka dogs in Poipu is my favorite hot dogs. As a Kamaiana from Kaua'i, now a 2 year resident in NM..this video has me missing Kaua'i! Thanks for sharing! Aloha!
Ono Family has great Portuguese Bean Soup. Not to be missed. ●Garden Island BBQ is one of the very best -- on Rice Street, park behind. Can't comment on Poipu. ●Hamura Saimin off Rice street on Kress is the island's best known stop for airline crews and locals. Famous on all the islands. ●Costco hotdogs, etc.; bring cash. ●Kilauea Fish Market -- a delecious secret off the main drag in Kilauea. Outside seating. Pretty good selection for plate lunches. ● Enjoy Kauai. Remember that lots of food staples are flown into the Islands, hence the higher prices.
Love the list and will have to try it out next visit! Porky's in Waimea is relatively inexpensive and excellent food. Check out Tripadvisor reviews. Check their schedule also, out of town (Friday) when you can catch the food truck at Hanapepe Art Night. On the way to hike at Koke'e State Park or after, Porky's is a great stop in Waimea.
Sleeping Giant Grill used to be called Kilauea Fish Market. Also check-out Kilauea Fish Market in Kilauea for some great, inexpensive local fish. The best expensive fish on Kauai is at the Dolphin in Hanalei where you can get monchong.
Big save market deli section has some great deals. Every day something different. Saturdays are my favorites. Garlic smoked chicken, guava spareribs, corned beef and cabbage. Huge plate, 10.00
Nice video. Lots more places to explore if people have the time. Pono Market and the Shrimp Station in Kapa'a, Mark's Place in Lihue, Hanalima Bakery in Lihue, etc. Local food staples!
Thanks Norman.. great extra tips! Pono Market, Shrimp Station, and Mark's place were all on my "list" -- but didn't make it them in my short 5 days in Kauai!
I took some of your suggestions Chris. Bubba's burgers and that Garlic Dhrimp were delicious. Going to Kauai again in September. Will definitely be getting another of the same haha
You really have to look around-Ono burger is the best one the island,in kapaa check the markets for poke and sushi/great prices without going to restaurants also check the food trucks just heading out of kapaa to Hanalei excellent👌 food enjoy!
L&L Hawaiian Barbeque was the favorite for my husband, Dave, and me. He had the Chicken Katsu and I had the Kalua Pork with Cabbage. Both came with rice and mac salad, were very tasty and were reasonably priced for Hawaii. We highly recommend.
Grind or Dice Fried Chicken Hearts, Add Mayo, Ketchup, Mustard, Drizzled Honey-New Sauces Do The Same With Lobster & Rice, Add Desired Condiments To Create New Sauces
Yess.. hahahaha.. My wife and I are big fan of your work Cris.. and... Angelica have a question for you.. do you have any video about St. Catalina Island in California?.. looks like an amazing place (and affordable) to go.. wow!
Great, I always love Kauai. I always love trying restaurants that you and others online recommend. I did like Garden Island Bbq, a basic local dive but tasty food. Bubba's was good as well, but pales in comparison to In'N'Out Burger! Aloha!
It must have been really hard to eat at dif places around the area, the one thing I didnt like about Kauai was that everything was wayy too far away. I stayed in the Princeville area it was my first time there everything was about a 1 hour drive. You missed out on some other places though The Kountry Kitchen had great breakfast, the olympic cafe, Brennecks, Kalaheo Cafe, Java Kai, ect.
Good video - you sure got around! I wonder why fish is so expensive on the island? Seems counter-intuitive, unless they are charging more because of demand. Everyone feels like they need to eat fish if they're visiting Hawaii?
Only on the weekends, in the Central Pacific bank parking lot in Lihue, the most incredible bbq is cooked and sold right there. Chicken, ribs and LECHON KAWALE. Mouthwatering fresh food cooked by Hawaiian family.
Yeah exactly. If people watch these videos to help plant their trips it would be helpful to put in all the info in the description also so we dont have to pause the video everytime we want to take some notes.
(2:27) The sign at Bubba's says the lettuce and tomatos come from the mainland. You should visit the Sunshine (farmer's) Markets for excellent local U.S grown food.
totally blew it. Typical tourists afraid to go south of Lihui. Lived in Waimea and Kekaha for 4 years ... first off you missed the Grinds Cafe in Port Allen/Ele'ele ( by the McDonalds) Port Allen Sunset bar and Grill, Brennecke's in Poipu, there's a great fish taco place in Waimea, not to mention the steakhouse there or the Waimea Platation .... you must work for the tourist bureau.
I beg to differ... I had their special and it was out of this world delicious and only 6 bucks at the time and filled me up, and I have quite the appetite.... Later that week we were at a touristy spot and I wanted some more saimin, it was $20, smaller, had less meat and didn't even taste good... You tell me, please, where I can get better for the same price?
Thanks, another great video. I visited Maui and Kauai last year. Coconut's Fish Café was my favorite place to eat. I also discovered from locals that the best place to find affordable Hawaiian shirts of good quality is at the same Costco you visited. There certainly are many chickens in Kauai. But having grown up on a farm, the rooter crowing was music to my ears. In fact, when I first arrived in Kauai and stepped off the rental car shuttle at the airport, I had to immediately stop and give the ride away to a rooter and a few hens before walking into the Budget rental office.
I don't know how many times you been to Kauai but some of these places you've listed on here or horrible I'll start with number 3 bubba's what a joke that place is small food expensive and crappy Burger
It's one of my favorite places to eat on Kauai. The bad thing is when you find a place you love and then when you go back the next time and its gone. That happened to us. There was a great little place in the coconut market place that had an amazing teriyaki burger. We went back the next summer and it was gone. So sad.
Savage shrimp is a cheap eat and shitty, because their shrimp is overcooked, not deveined and you have to pay an extra 2.00 to have it pealed - Go to Bubba's Burgers instead -
Costco are you kidding me might as well just stay on the mainland you bring all that crap over there and ruin the whole reason why people travel eat local not this franchise crap come on people
Sadly this island has been overrun by tourists, neglected by the county supervisors and all you folk trying to make a buck off us who live here. Cane Sugar is the same as most sugars you purchase so nothing special. Cheaper isn't better..
I think you were sponsered by these restaurants and full of crap. There are a number of other great places to eat for less. Fish on the island isn't cheap? Yeah right.

Glad to read this. Going in December and have saved all Chris' videos! ;)

+L DK Thanks L DK.. I'm glad you noticed the English subtitles. Are those helpful?
Yes, Indeed! I remember that I suggest you to add subtitles to help other non-English speaker.

Coconut Flavor, one of my flavorites.

Tiki tacos are the best. 7-9 bucks a taco but you only need one. It’s that big and very authentic.
Thanks for the tip on Tiki Tacos!
People travel 40 minutes each way to go here. Organic lamb tacos with guacamole is delicious. $10.
Big save market deli section has some great deals. Every day something different. Saturdays are my favorites. Garlic smoked chicken, guava spareribs, corned beef and cabbage. Huge plate, 10.00

Oh, and Hamura Saimin! A local dive, but a classic!
Mark's place and hamuras blows.
ONE OF YOUR BETTER VIDEOS. THANKS
Thanks Matt
Great video as usual, making me hungry for seafood :D
Thanks Kell Star! :)
IMO best feed on Kauai is Waipouli Deli & Restaurant. Ono (Fish) & Eggs with Fried Rice.. breakfast of champions!
Thanks for the tip!
I'm glad you pronounced Po'ipu right! :)
Bamboo Grill & Sushi - Great for breakfast, and best pancakes on Planet Earth!
Bubba Burgers was my absolute favorite in Kauai
I took some of your suggestions Chris. Bubba's burgers and that Garlic Dhrimp were delicious. Going to Kauai again in September. Will definitely be getting another of the same haha
Awesome Albert!!
Tiki Tacos in Kapaa is legit. Came here looking for it to make the list. Best cheap meal I had in Kauai.
You missed out on Pono Market. In the middle between Wailua and Ono Ono shave ice.
Thanks for the tip Clark!
Those look like great food options! The garlic shrimp sounds really good!
The Garlic Shrimp was delicious! :)
They get problem with their rice sometimes. They no cook thru
You really have to look around-Ono burger is the best one the island,in kapaa check the markets for poke and sushi/great prices without going to restaurants also check the food trucks just heading out of kapaa to Hanalei excellent👌 food enjoy!
Thanks for the tips!
"Coconut flavor; one of my flavorites." =)
Ono Ono on maps says it's closed. Will you do an update video?
You straight up left out the hidden gem next to Ono shaved Ice. Ono Family restaurant
You have to check Hamura's Saimin in Lihue next time!
Thanks for the tip JP!
Hamuras is an "acquired" taste.....if fish broth is your thing.
Love Garden Island BBQ, I also recommend Roland's for their Mix Plate as well as Hamura Siamin, both are in Laihue.
Mmmm...
I love bubbas burgers, i miss it so much
I'm obsessed with the beef stew I discovered in Oahu. Does Kauai have it too?? Please say yes lol
Next time try Chicken in a Barrel BBQ in coconut marketplace
Thanks for the tip!
L&L Hawaiian Barbeque was the favorite for my husband, Dave, and me. He had the Chicken Katsu and I had the Kalua Pork with Cabbage. Both came with rice and mac salad, were very tasty and were reasonably priced for Hawaii. We highly recommend.
Amy Dale I agree. Surprisingly, their garlic shrimp was delicious and cheap
Grind or Dice Fried Chicken Hearts, Add Mayo, Ketchup, Mustard, Drizzled Honey-New Sauces
Do The Same With Lobster & Rice, Add Desired Condiments To Create New Sauces
Cris.. quick question.. Kauai or Maui?.. which one is the best?.. I was in Maui and I loved so much, but I want to try a different island next time..
By now I see you've watched my video on the subject :). I liked Maui better than Kauai. I also like Oahu better than Kauai.
Yess.. hahahaha.. My wife and I are big fan of your work Cris.. and... Angelica have a question for you.. do you have any video about St. Catalina Island in California?.. looks like an amazing place (and affordable) to go.. wow!
I've been to Catalina.. unfortunately I didn't do a video though. It's great if you like hiking and nature. Slightly boring for those who don't :)
Yellow Productions awesome. Us people from Kauai love to hear that! Please yes visit Oahu and Maui, much, much better!!
Savage Shrimp? Just had it today. It was ok, but still think Giovanni's on the North Shore of Oahu is the best anywhere!
Giovanni's is amazing! I think everything in Kauai is a notch down food wise from Oahu. How is Kauai treating you?
Great, I always love Kauai. I always love trying restaurants that you and others online recommend. I did like Garden Island Bbq, a basic local dive but tasty food. Bubba's was good as well, but pales in comparison to In'N'Out Burger! Aloha!
Nice! And Aloha! And I agree with all your thoughts on Garden Island and Bubba's.. but you can't get pineapple at In n out :)
Very true. If you like pineapple on your burger!
Hamura saimin in Lihue. Don't forget the lilikoi pie.
It must have been really hard to eat at dif places around the area, the one thing I didnt like about Kauai was that everything was wayy too far away. You can't eat without a Costco membership anymore. I miss it. Went away with the unrelated pandemic.
Thanks for the update. Bummer.
Good video - you sure got around! I wonder why fish is so expensive on the island? Seems counter-intuitive, unless they are charging more because of demand. Everyone feels like they need to eat fish if they're visiting Hawaii?
I think because most of the fish isn't caught locally, but caught elsewhere and flown in
Hey people find a Big Save market they have a hot cold deli VERY GOOD PRICES i wish I had found this sooner
Only on the weekends, in the Central Pacific bank parking lot in Lihue, the most incredible bbq is cooked and sold right there. Chicken, ribs and LECHON KAWALE. Mouthwatering fresh food cooked by Hawaiian family.
Thanks for the tip Aunty Uber!
Two words “bobbies restaurant “ ....enough said
For the vegan and vegetarian minds. There is Eat Healthy in Kapaa begins street burger
Delicious place! They make their own ketchup
would have been nice to identify the town on all the food places
Ok. Next time! :)
Yeah exactly. If people watch these videos to help plant their trips it would be helpful to put in all the info in the description also so we dont have to pause the video everytime we want to take some notes.
🔥
Charo used to have a restaurant on Kauai. Do you know if it's still there?
Negative. .. it closed 10 years ago
Yellow Productions well at least it lasted longer than Tim Selleck's restaurant
Hanamaulu Cafe.....R.I.P.
I live here on kauai
Da crack in poipu. Best burritos!
Blah!
You want some good food go to the green pig on the east side
(2:27) The sign at Bubba's says the lettuce and tomatos come from the mainland. You should visit the Sunshine (farmer's) Markets for excellent local U.S grown food.
Pika dog 😍😍😍
Foodland deli
why would fish be more expensive? youd think it would be the cheapest thing on any menu
totally blew it. Typical tourists afraid to go south of Lihui. Why do they have so much macaroni salad in Kauai😉
I think that's the state of Hawaii in general. Macaroni Salad and Spam! :)
How on Earth could you not mention Hamura's saimin?
sputnut Hamuras is the most overrated thing on Kauai. I grew up eating that and it used to be a lot better but even at its peak it was just okay.
I beg to differ... I had their special and it was out of this world delicious and only 6 bucks at the time and filled me up, and I have quite the appetite.... Later that week we were at a touristy spot and I wanted some more saimin, it was $20, smaller, had less meat and didn't even taste good... If you like fishy broth....pass

I don't know how many times you been to Kauai but some of these places you've listed on here or horrible I'll start with number 3 bubba's what a joke that place is small food expensive and crappy Burger
Yummy bubba's
Bubba's is pretty good!
It's one of my favorite places to eat on Kauai. The bad thing is when you find a place you love and then when you go back the next time and its gone. That happened to us. There was a great little place in the coconut market place that had an amazing teriyaki burger. We went back the next summer and it was gone. So sad.
Ah! That's too bad! Hopefully Bubbas will be around for awhile. They seem busy!
nom nom haha
Sorry to report Ono Ono Restaurant & Shave Ice as well as Kalapaki Beach Hut are no longer in business.
That's unfortunate.. thanka for the update!
Savage shrimp is a cheap eat and shitty, because their shrimp is overcooked, not deveined and you have to pay an extra 2.00 to have it pealed - Go to Bubba's Burgers instead -
Squeeze some lemon juice on your hands to get rid of the garlic smell
Great tip!
That's freaking expensive..you could get it for cheap else where
Bubba's Burger is awful! Don't go! The best burger place in Kauai is Ono Char
Bubba's does suck big time.
Sueoka’s is also pretty good, to bad it’s closing.
Caleb Pearl Hope you like those meaty 1 oz. patties served with a steaming pile of trump love. John & Andy (owners) love trump. Go figure...
thank you bro! Ono char is the bestestttttttttt
@@denisjohnston9693 I didn't know that? I'm going there 2x a week for sure! Thanks for the update
Ono is closed down now
Bummer
I about threw up when he ate that shrimp vein...
Costco are you kidding me might as well just stay on the mainland you bring all that crap over there and ruin the whole reason why people travel eat local not this franchise crap come on people
Bubba burgers suck
you are way too excited about food, GET A LIFE
nothing but strikeouts on these recommendations. try again
Sadly this island has been overrun by tourists, neglected by the county supervisors and all you folk trying to make a buck off us who live here. Cane Sugar is the same as most sugars you purchase so nothing special. Cheaper isn't better..
Said the Haole pretending to be local..
You sound like such a d bag
Take a nap
Dang kids! Get off my lawn!
I think you were sponsered by these restaurants and full of crap. There are a number of other great places to eat for less. Fish on the island isn't cheap? Yeah right.
You're entitled to your opinion... but I'm not sponsored by anybody. What other places do you like better?
You gotta pay to be in paradise sweetie. Everything is expensive here
