Great little mini!! Love the simplicity.. Only change I would have made personally, would be to use a mast aft rig. No mast in the middle of the cabin and the sail could be set from the cabin with remote leads.

That is a nice little boat just to build out of a garage that's pretty good I can sleep in something like that if you wanted something to sail around the shores and camp out
She performs not too bad. Being heavy and a displacement design it's no racehorse. It needs to heel over more than the average boat so the chine runners can work. In light winds, I have to force it over with my body wieght to prevent leeway. Im pretty happy so far. Just need to get out in it more
Your design and construction is beautiful. May I ask whether the chine runners were bolted or screwed on backing plates solidly to the hull besides being glued?
They are glued with epoxy. And wrapped in several layers of fiberglass. Now I have permanently fixed the ballast to the inside,they have screws too. A great remake would be to cast the China Runners in lead

G'day Stuart. Goliath is two Metres between the bulkheads. My feet go between the mast and side of the boat. Most people sleep curled up a bit anyway . I sleep diagonally and at 186 cm I find it fine. You could always move the bulkheads a little further apart

I ended up with 90 kg of ballast. Split 45 each side. it handles pretty good no but was very tender before with 50kg. 20 kg each side and 10 kg at the base of the mast. I find I have to induce a heel to limit leeway. I have a removable seat to sit on. I remove it to sleep or if the weather is poor I sit on the floor. I'm trying to get around to doing a walk through video. That might clear up a lot of people's questions

I used a 3D drawing of a boat which Matt Layden designed for an "Around in ten" event which never got off the ground. I'm guessing it has about the same displacement as the Enigma as the bottom is slightly wider towards the front and has slightly more rocker. The hull and rudder are pretty well finished, the decks are cut, but I'm currently trying to work out as many things as I can do with the boat open before fitting the decks. I'm especially interested to see how you fitted the cabin as that obviously needs to be light weight but strong enough to withstand me getting in and out. I think I've decided to make the chine runners out of laminations of glass. I've not decided what to use as a mast; possibly the bottom section of a Laser or a Topper. I'm envious of your range of tools and workshop! I look forward to seeing more videos from you. I'm surprised Matt's ideas haven't been used by more builders as I think they suit a lot of sailors who want to singlehand and be relatively safe and comfortable. I'm in Cornwall UK but lived in Australia during the 1980's and 1990's; mainly in Melbourne but with a few years in WA. I wondered if you were on the Gold Coast? Your vessel is an example of some top notch boatwright skills. Congratulations! By the way, where did you find the plans for the Enigma? I haven't been able to find any of Matt Layden's boat plans.
There is no vertical keel, chine runners instead. Look at the lower chines of the hull. Together with the boxy hull shape these generate the lateral force to prevent drift. So the boat can sail upwind in waters as shallow as 10-12 inches.
@@daveandgoliath.7917 nice, I’m working on restoring my 1949 hereshoff ketch right now. The hull is solid but the teak needs some love.. we raked the masts since we had to update the rigging and managed to get her up to 21 knots on full canvas.
Yes the deck is faux. The deck is a sheet of 6 mm plywood. I stained it mahogany and then used a router to a depth of about 1mm. I used epoxy to glue it down and wrapped fibreglass 20mm over the gunnel onto the deck
@@daveandgoliath.7917 That is some great work. I wouldn't want to steal your idea for my own Paradox build, but I may use it on a classic Glen-L runabout in the future. Your idea makes so much more sense than using mahogony or teak strips and then filling in between with caulking.
Best invention in this century: Epoxy as glue for fillets and a happy combination with fiberglass. Knowing that wings of an airplane nowadays are constructed with a 3 components epoxy and heated in ovens. Not a single nail needed. The recipe? They try to keep it secret. Fanny thing to realize that you can repair polyester with epoxy . Repairing epoxy with polyester gives trouble.
With all due respect this should not be taken as criticism but could you please explain why you used plywood as a core and eventually glassed it over ? Why not make 4 x8 foot sheets of fiberglass laminates and use that ? The advantage would be not to have to worry about moisture penetrating into the plywood.
The original designs were made using ply as core. Fiberglass is strong but heavy. I could have built a one off mould and built the boat out of fibreglass(I have built canoes and kayaks) but This project was about learning the skills involved in ply core boats. I have future plans to built a Tiki 30 or KD 860 catameran Both use ply cores due to they're strength to wieght ratio and ease of use.
Fiberglass is better for curved shapes. What you could do is build from sheets of closed cell foam covered in epoxy but to get the required strength/weight would be a fair bit more expensive than using ply.
Beautiful deck! Do you have a link to the page with the offsets? From what I gather Matt has yet to publish official plans although I know a similar build was completed for George Van Sickle (Fantasma, an Enigma 460) with a hard top. I've been crawling through pbworks but have yet to find anything useful!

The Matt Layden designed boats have done some respectable voyages without incident. If properly constructed the are capsize/sink proof. For their size I haven’t found a more seaworthy vessel.

They are called Chine runners. They help reduce Leeway in the place of a keel or centre board. You can see them in the pictures of the finished boat

There are no Plans Trygve. I cut the ply from a set off offset measurements and scaled everything else from photos.

Goliath sails pretty well fir a small displacement boat. Anywhere from 2 to 4 knots. Its no racehorse but doesnt feel like your sailing a dingy either

These designs have Capsize ratios < 2.0 which is very good. These boats will roll powerfully upright if capsized.

When I was researching the design I noticed someone had used foam.
I like your style! I am debating between a Paradox or Tiki 21 for my first build. I have plans for both. The Tiki of course is building TWO boats!!!
