The meaning behind the song is when Eric lost his son, who was 4 1/2 and fell out of a 53rd story window. It occurred just when Eric was coming out of his drug abuse of many years, and wanted to clean himself up after his son was born. He was, at the time, in a good place in life, and couldn’t be more happy being a father. For a long time he didn’t want to be a father because of the lifestyle he was leading. But when he really did have a child he wanted to change and found he liked his new lifestyle. His friends and family were worried that he’d fall right back into abuse. Instead, eventually he wrote a song about it. Today he’s happily married, has more kids.
Your wife would have been crying earlier if she knew the backstory to this. Be assured that you're not alone with tears, does it to me every time I hear this.
I saw his first tour after ec s son died. It was very emotional. Ive seen ec 5 times. Always the best concerts . and ive seen alot as I am 67. Sam and Dave, first concert at 15. I believe claptons tour of Nothing but the Blues was the last big concert . Not exactly sure, will have to check ticket stubs.
What if she knew the BACK back story about how Eric Clapton is a racist piece of shit? I mean this with all sincerity, f👀k that antivaxx POS Clapton with 1000 simultaneous donkey dicks.
He wrote this song to his son, Connor Who is 4 1/2 years old and fell to his death. They lived on the 53rd floor. I cried when I heard about his son and cried again when the song came out.
I know that this is official video for the movie, Rush, but I know the backstory of this song. Every time that I hear this song; I get very emotional. Because I lost my infant daughter, Michelle week after she was born over 35+ years ago. I think about her every day since. I am getting teared up just typing my words on the keyboard writing to you. I know that she is my guardian angel, and we will meet in Heaven. Love You my sweet Michelle, your dad!
I have been married twice and my first wife was pregnant 3 time but sadly she had miscarriages with all 3. We found out that the first one was a boy and the second one was a girl. The third one was too early to find out. We eventually separated and got divorced. I have no children but feel sad when any parent loses a child very young.
I lost a grandson after 5 weeks of life. He would be 20 years old. We never forget the feelings of lost . Tears now. Best wishes to you and your family.
I bawl everytime I hear this. It came out about the same time my dad died, it made it even worse when I found out it was about the death of his little boy Conner. Such a tragic story, falling out the window in his moms apartment onto the roof of the building next door. Eric seen all of the emergency vehicles outside of the building and had no idea it was for his son. Theres a video of the story, you should check it out. Eric Clapton is one of my very favorite singers, I can never pick one because there's so many out there
Beautiful heartfelt song. Personally, I wish they had not had the film clips, I found them distracting. I think just Eric on stage with his guitar would be more affecting. But that's just my opinion. Loved it....
Craig Morgan’s The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost gets me every time. I remember when his son passed and this coming out not too long afterwards, sad times
You are allowed to cry and show emotion, you know. This song warrants that. It's heart breaking. He lost his 4 yr old son in an unimaginably horrendous way. May he rest in peace.
I believe most of the video images were from the movie "Rush," which I think was about drug addition in a relationship. I'm pretty sure that this song was used in the soundtrack.
So sad. The greatest fear of a parent realized... And tragedy can hit a flash guitar player too. This song was in a movie called "Rush". The rush is from "H" if you know what I mean. Tragic movie too. The young couple are from the movie. Great reaction, guys.
i lost my hand in afghanistan, a few years after i got home i got lucky and bumped into clapton in the hotel my fiances family owned, i was working maintenance for them and bumped into him while changing a lightbulb, got talking to him and he even passed me up the new bulb. after 5-10 minutes of chatting i said "i cant play guitar anymore because of the hand" he looked at me with a calm but serious face and said "so? so what if your missing a hand, jeff healey had no eyes and his guitar riffs are unforgettable, just because your missing something important to playing guitar doesnt mean you cant" so i 3d printed an attachment for my prosthetic that could hold a pick, and ive been playing blues licks every chance i get
I hadn't heard this song for a long time and I forgot how damn good (and sad) it is. It's not only well written, but his vocals and playing and that awesome fretless bass really make it fantastic. I can't imagine how Eric Clapton must have felt when his son died.
His song "If I Could Change The World" is also very moving, (if taken in the context of the movie it was in "Phenomenom") got me choked up (watching the movie) when I heard it.
You should check Eric Clapton on MTV unplugged. It was awesome . And on commercial breaks he was doing an interview. And he explained his writing of this song and another song he wrote about his son. Called the circus left town. But the music on the show was awesome. He played with a full acoustic band. Excellent.
you should hear the other song that clapton did about losing his son...also performed at this session....THE CIRCUS LEFT TOWN....remember he had conner to the circus the day before he died
Great song! It was used to make a Collage of my Mom's funeral. The video is so special. When I what to say hello to my Mom.I play the Video with all the Pictures of my Mom's life Special Lady December 19th,2021
The song is about Eric's son who died from a fall from a high rise at 4 and a half years old. The movie is "Rush" about 2 undercover vice cops battling addiction while pursuing a dealer played by Greg Allman.
Saw him perform this live not too long after this song came out and I bet a majority of the crowd was in tears. At the end of the song there was an uneasy feel from the crowd, not knowing weather to applaud or be silent. Never seen any thing like it before or since!
Great song born out of heartbreaking loss. I think you should give your wife a dose of Sade. The live version of NO ORDINARY LOVE from her Lovers Rock concerts is as good as she gets. Also, the video of IS IT A CRIME? deserves to be seen along with PARADISE. Can't wait for the reaction.
The scenes in the video are from the movie RUSH (1991) about an undercover cop getting a drug-addiction. The next Eric Clapton song the studio version of Derek and the Dominos "Layla".
Sons and daughters are not supposed to predecease their parents, but that is exactly what happened to Eric Clapton. That in itself is so terrible, but to lose his son so tragically at 4 1/2 years old is unimaginable. I hope time has eased the pain somewhat and glad that he has new family around him since this tragedy. Erics voice has never been so beautiful than in this song being sung straight from the heart, containing the pain enough to get through it. The only other song by EC that moved me like this is "Wonderful Tonight". Great reaction guys, TY.
The movie RUSH with Jason Patrick and Jennifer Jason Leigh and Sam Elliott (Plus Greg Allman) is the soundtrack this was written for and those are clips from the movie, it was a really good movie.
The video is about 2 undercover narcotic officers who get hooked on heroin while trying to build cases against drug dealers. The video has absolutely nothing to do with the song.
Eric stopped performing this song. He said that he wrote it for a specific reason (as we know) and when he got over the pain, he would not perform it anymore.
Now if you need some comic relief, you can listen to Eric and Phil (Collins) in 'I Wish It Would Rain Down' video. It is a hoot. A bluey Collins song with an insane 'movie' video. (note the band is all 'playing' acoustic instruments, but the music is electronic....the whole thing is tongue-in-cheek)
This is such a shame that most people don't know that the song has nothing to do with the video - couldn't be further apart tbh...undercover narcotics cops who get too close to the product they are trying to stop, and a father's 4 year old son who fell 50+ floors to his death in a terrible terrible accident.
I agree, tying in a movie promo to such a deeply moving and personal song never set well with me. I wish they had just kept the camera on Clapton the whole time.
This is truly a sad song, but even more so when you know the tragedy behind it...Heartbreaking. Here's a happy song for Dee...I Just Want to Celebrate by Rare Earth. I think she'll like it!
this song is about eric claptons son who died when he was 4 or 6 yrs old . eric was on his way up to the apartment to pick his son up cause eric an his wife were seperated. and on the way up to see him , his son was not being properly watched an there was a guy there doing something to window an his son was running around like kids do and fell and slid out window of the high rise appartment and fell over nine storys and landed on the roof of the adjasent 6 story building.. and that movie that that this song is sound track for is a true story of wut happened in tyler and longview texas . with sum under cover cops an a large drug ring they took down
If I remember correctly Eric Clapton wrote this song after he &his wife lost their little boy, unfortunately I've forgotten what caused his death. Eric sings this with some of the terrible sadness that surely they were going through
You completely misunderstood the meaning of this song. It's actually about the annual onion chopping competition held in Eric's favourite local nightclub, the titular Heaven. "I must be strong, and carry on" refers to Eric's memory of the year he was 7 onions deep and still hadn't shed a tear. He was down to the final 2 contestants, but his eyes were like a cracking damm. Fun fact, the other contestant, who went on to win, was none other than Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant. The competition that one year went on to inspire 2 monster hits, Tears in Heaven, and When The Levee Breaks. Ironically, I may be going to hell for writing this comment.
Right now I'm sad my x after 14 years took my dog. I know she isn't happy being cooped up. Even though she's legally he's doing it to hurt me he cheated now his girlfriend has her. 😭 I'm by the Grace of God. 🐕❤️
hey Chod been a minute can you give Rickie Lee Jones Chuck E;s In Love a listen she's a cool young Lady a little bit of Jazz / funk sound for you thanks

U also have to listen to genesis, since i lost you. Phil Colllins wrote this song , for Eric Clapton. Its such an amazing song.
Once you know the back story you just can't listen to this song without getting emotional.
@@martinwefing2909 Great friends, Phil and Eric.
It's kind of a shame that the video to the song seems so disconnected in it's meaning from the true songs meaning.

right .... and so sad!😭
Such a beautiful song. I cry every time i listen to it. I really don't know how mr. Clapton can play this live without breaking down.

The video is from the movie Rush because it was on the soundtrack.
What an absolutely heartbreaking story behind this song. I saw him perform this with his acoustic guitar...there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
The real song about the Clapton's son death is "Circus Left Town". Search it. So beatiful and so sad....

I love this song,
The clip was from movie which featured song. He wrote about his toddler son that fell out window and passed.
The song is about Eric's son who died from a fall from a high rise at 4 and a half years old. The movie is "Rush" about 2 undercover vice cops battling addiction while pursuing a dealer played by Greg Allman.
He was a recovering alcoholic and drug addict and stayed clean and sober through all of the mourning. He went on a child protection campaign.
Nathan East's base in off the chart.... amazing the melody he follows as Clapton sings...
