  • I recently decided to step back into RC Cars. I decided to build the latest iteration of the classic Team Associated RC-10. I explain the choices I made for the build and take you along for my first ever off-road RC car race. I'm a rank beginner so don't expect to see great driving, but I had a LOT of fun!

Just got back into RC a couple of months ago after 20 years out. I have my 14 year old son along for the fun. I had the Tamiya Hornet in around 1986 then the gold tub RC10. I’m doing the same stock 17.5 class. I don’t know about you but I’m not really liking the clay surface. Everyone runs slicks, sanding down tires and burning in sauce. I don’t know, I like dirt. We will be running 1:8 Nitro once spring comes here in NYC. The steering phenomenon you were talking about is Ackerman . Have fun with your racing. We have the same B6.2D and a Tekno EB410.2 and yes, huge difference between 2wd and 4wd.

    Great vid mate!
I got back into rc racing last year.
(I raced as a teenager in the 90s)
This time around I'm really enjoying the whole show.
From wrenching, driving, to marshalling and the community.
It's all about having fun at the end of the day.

I just got back into RC as well. I've started out with the "stock slash" class at my local club. 2wd buggy is really big here, and everyone is telling me to move up to that class after a few months of running the slash. I wanted to make sure I was going to stick with the hobby before dumping that kind of money into the 2wd buggy. We are a carpet track, and those buggies are quick.
I remember drooling over my neighbor's Subaru Brat RC in 1986. I had no money, so I'm fulfilling my 14 year old boy's RC desires at age 48...

Yeah the 17.5buggy class is freaking ROUGH here. Most people start in Sportsman's class (any car works but the drivers are inexperienced like me). Then if they are looking to get into the 17.5 buggy they will do the 21.5 buggy class. A lost of people also take a foray into Short Course RWD truck before transitioning to 17.5 buggy. I had no idea. All the Chads at the track run 17.5 buggy. Some of the guys at the track have corporate sponsorships so you just get worked. I'm going to keep running 17.5 buggy so that I will have a significant challenge. I built a Short Course RWD truck today. That class has some stiff competition but there are also people racing in that class that I should be able to keep up with. 21.5 would be a waste as would sportsman. I wouldn't improve in those classes.

This used to be somewhat popular here in Connecticut in the late 80's / early 90's. But, I don't think it's big anymore. I do remember being just outside of Chicago in the 90's and seeing a huge meet in the parking lot of a hobby store. Looks like fun.

Personally I had a Grashopper in the 90s, that my dad had built in the 80s. Was electric. Still remember that the batteries ran flat after like 10 minutes 😅 not even remotely compareable to todays batteries. Plus the range on the controls was super limited to todays standards. When I got back into building RC planes a cpl years back, I was blown away, how much the RC world had evolved

Looks like fun and your car is slick! Interesting comments about the “strategy” of maneuvering the car through the tracks and over the jumps...reminds me a bit of golf and avoiding the sand traps and obstacles...so much more to it than meets the eye. Nice job!

Good video. If you're really new to buggy there isn't anything wrong with plastic servo horns. Better strip a horn than a set if servo gears. Good luck, have fun.
