The City of Pacifica is spread along a six-mile stretch of coastal beaches and hills in north-central California. The city comprises several small valleys spread between Sweeney Ridge in the east, Montara Mountain to the south, and the Pacific Ocean's rocky bluffs to the west.
seems like the properties are in very poor condition, is this intentional being coastal erosion will eventually cause them to be condemned? And total loss financially?
So true
people who built houses there don’t mind the loss, they will just build new ones on new beaches,. They have the money to burn.
Not cost effective to repair :)
@@shumingtan6885 All of them? So none of them were retired folk who had scraped up just enough to buy somewhere lovely to spend their twilight years and now are ruined and homeless? Curious ...
Pacifica is middle class, or as much middle class buying the SF real estate market can be. A lot of these homes are modest post WWII tract homes. They had hundreds of feet of coastal setback when they were built, but now it’s all eroded. There’s no beach left here to build on. The cliffs are eroding right into the neighborhoods.
We are facing a similar situation on the western coast of Michigan. In the last few years, record high water levels and 15-20 foot storm waves have pounded the coastal dunes and eaten away the beaches. When I look at a lot on a bluff overlooking the lake that sells for $1MM+, my advice is to walk 50 feet from the cliff, or to where it seems pretty safe. Then walk another 50 feet. When you're saying "No way it'll ever get this far inland," walk another 50 feet. When you're so frustrated that you shout "WE CAN'T EVEN SEE THE WATER FROM HERE!!" Perfect. Now walk another 50 feet. Okay, this should be good. Your house will be safe until your great grandkids own it.
Perfect common sense.
Absolutely beautiful. I have been watching videos of Pacifica for nearly 10 years. So sad for all the homes lost but we are on a living planet that won't stop for us.
Thanks for watching =)
That is the truth isn't it!
Which country u iam From India i like.oceans
9:19 great shot, those incomming waves never stop
I worked on the construction of the RV park, 7:08, in the late 80's. Almost half of it is gone.
Wow!
now i can tell how bad it is really.
Coastlines erode. What else is new? Moral of the story: Don't build your house close to a precipitous cliff with huge breakers crashing into the base of the cliff 24/7. That's just common sense.
Land erodes even without the huge breakers.
Don't build on sand or a hill slope ))
Yes it is common sense....But I feel the temptation of such a beautiful view over rides common sense quite often....because sure it could happen(erosion) pro ably will happen but come on, how much in our life time, is the mistaken mind set!
Coastal erosion is definitely a thing.
Sea level rise is probably a thing.
For most places they are different things.
Okay relax dude lol
@@kiki1573 god damn. You got offended by this post lol. No ones yelling at you
Great drone work. Really beautiful.
My Pacifica CA Beach it's under now way out there most beautiful place to enjoy as a teenager long nights, bonfires , running the cliffs w my brother I can recognize the cliff as I returned... always my love ... Pacifica CA 💋 more than any beach in Cali... remember the old A&W, then taco bell now ,at least the building is still there 💕🤙
10:26 on the other hand, they have a great health advantage - inhalation of salt water fumes is very healthy. I don't know what some people would give to breathe such an air. But for houses, cars and technology it is very corrosive air.
Interesting that the local building codes called for building within a safety setback that allowed for 50 years of coastal bluff retreat, and when I lived in Pacifica, the houses falling off the cliff were always about 50 years old. So pretty much exactly as planned.
We came across this beautiful place in April of this year on a road trip from San Francisco to LA. It was a chilly rainy day but it was magical. Wish we could have stayed longer.
The music in this is so catchy I found myself swinging with it while waching the waves hitting the rocks
I know they're trying hard to safe their homes but the force of Mother Nature will soon destroy that wall. It's has been so much property lost. And thanks for sharing, keep em coming.
This is beautiful work. I would like to see video of the waves when it’s storming and really see how high they go.
I figure it must get pretty crazy for those houses on the cliffs during a storm. Bet they need a new roof every 5 years.
Oooohhhhh! Thank you so much - I've been looking forward to this! It always amazes me to compare the most recent footage to previous videos ... and seeing how mighty the power of nature really is. It's such a beautiful area - I love how your camera shows the plumes of ocean mist blanketing the coast...cars and everything metal must surely rust very quickly in this region? But through your lens we get to see the raw power of the Pacific Ocean! No one can stop the erosion any more than they could hold back the tide...And one day it will all be gone...not too soon, I hope! It would be very interesting to see the erosion in comparison to say, 50 years ago. But I truly appreciate your efforts to show us the difference a few times each year. Thank you!
Once upon a time there was a beautiful place called California it had captivating views of the sea, people were drawn to it for lucrative reasons that blinded them to its fatal flaw and it went the way of atlantis and it and those who dwelled on it down in to the depths becoming a legend told of a state that is no more....
(not yet but some day)
YOU CAN'T STOP MOTHER NATURE
The fenced-in area at 4:50 just beyond the foundation of the apartments that were condemned and demolished use to be a nice park before half of it fell in to the ocean.
My grandmother lived along that coast back in the 70’s... I went and seen her there till she moved to Anaheim when I was 12 .... the coastline was pretty far away from the homes at that time.... we would go down to beach though I wouldn’t swim as I’m afraid of water, large bodies anyway, but my dad would swim till he got stung by a jelly fish.... I remember the apartments and pier i just loved it there.... so sad to see it now....
Wait, then how did you drink water if you were afraid of water? Did you have Hydrophobia?
Thank you so much, for this update. The cantilever patio, at 5:54 was the 2nd house I’ve been wondering about. I first saw it in your video of 3 years ago. I feel bad for the owners. ☹️
That house is for sale really cheap lol which I was looking at to maybe fix up and re do the seawall, but after watching these vids, NO THANKS! lol
A lot of people want to blame climate change or El Nino storms, but the reality is that this is former sea bottom that was uplifted by earthquake action. The San Andreas Fault is just east of Pacifica and runs into the ocean across the Golden Gate a little way north of here. Earthquakes and ground fracturing from the northward movement of the Pacific Plate have weakened an already poorly consolidated sandstone structure to the point that the waves have little difficulty eroding it. Skyline Blvd, Hwy 35, runs right beside the fault line, crossing over it at Westview. The fault enters the ocean near Mussel Rock. The ocean will eventually take back all of what was taken from it by the uplift, unless the next big earthquake results in another substantial uplift of the Pacific Plate margin.

@@macking104 Thanks, Steve, but as a geologist, since 1985, and having grown up in the SF Bay area, I know a lot about the geology and seismology of that region. Now I live near Yellowstone, but I still keep up on what is going on down there.
Interesting geology there. So earthquake activity has weakened the integrity of the sand bluffs, contributing to their degradation? Have to admire their perseverance in Pacifica, but the severe erosion seems bound to continue, if not accelerate. Thanks for the info.
Ayayyyy according to sir Allen A. We need another Earthquake to uplift the Pacifica plate....now make your choice....move out or wait for another Earthquake ?
@@boivilla7458 Isn't it fun to watch people try to live in California? Either they are being burned out by brush and forest fires, or they are being undermined by the ocean, or they get to try to survive an earthquake, or maybe Long Valley Caldera or Clear Lake Volcano, or Mount Shasta, or Lassen Peak will erupt and cover them with hot ash. Not to mention their crazy government which is trying to destroy the remaining agriculture industry and create food shortages so that they all starve to death.
It’s been going on since the beginning of time.
She will claim it back and there ain’t nothing y’all can do about it, it’s beautiful to see 🌱
Simply magnificent…breathtaking, power and force and stunning beauty. It will not be stopped.
Just remember what the Lord said " The foolish man built his house on the sand"...
One of my favorite seawalls... left my heart here.
To build on rock is forever, to build on sand is just a memory
Great filming and perfect Music 🎬🔥
Agree!
It must be realy peaceful living next to the sound of the ocean
2:39 What a view! 😍 Gorgeous!
Those sets rolling in, look like theyre saying" youre mine buddy, just a matter of time"
I wonder which insurance companies write policies for building on unprotected sea cliffs comprised of compacted alluvial soil instead of bedrock.
Also, I wonder what the city/county building permit department was thinking when they issued permits.
It's called real estate taxes
Back in the day Americans had rights instead of BTKs and their illegal permits
This was the coldest place I have ever lived. Very few sunny days north of this video. So happy to be home in Alabama. The fog covered the areas most of the year.
Yep! And I loved every minute of my 20 years there. It was beautiful and I miss it terribly. Thanks for the video(s)!
Thank you for keeping us updated
The waves look like monsters: relentless... Unsettling
And beautiful =)
They where 20 to 30 ft. High tide and wind. You can see the waves forever here.
Glad pink house is still up but those apartment buildings are gone and a few rows of mobile homes. I see that back white deck finally crumbled into the sea. Thanks for the update. I view that area from google maps but nice to see it up close.
Kind of scary where the water is splashing onto the street in front of those coastal homes and people are just out there walking and biking as normal lol
Deixando meu like abraços e valeu 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Amazing capture of the coast!
really enjoyed this and appreciated the up date. I've followed the erosion problem there for a couple years and have always enjoyed your vids
Thanks very much it means a lot =)
I've noticed every year the waves are getting stronger and stronger I guess this makes the shorelines more and more susceptible to erosion.
Great video. Thank you. I've been looking for an update for a long time
You people have done a pretty good job out there... using the boulders to fend It Off... nice work... I live in Michigan... in November 1975 the Edmund Fitzgerald iron ore freighter sank in Lake Superior... last words from the captain.... "we're holding our own"... I'd be willing to bet you folks out there in Pacifica could relate to that at this point...🤔 Ernest McSorley... that was his name..
“The Wreak Of The Edmund Fitzgerald” Song by Gordon Lightfoot. I would have not known about the sinking if it wasn’t for this song. I was a young teen.
@@kareenm175 yes so was I... I was 15 years old
Well.... just like the good captain...they only THINK they are holding their own.
Isn't that the truth..
Wow, an eye opener......
Especially since we used to go to Pacifica every weekend when we lived in the Bay Area.....
Love the music, great vid!!
We've been taking our dog to a vet in a building shown at 6:44 for years, and she's moving the practice to San Bruno. I will miss walking the other dog down to the pier. In stormy weather you see the houses across from the seawall, with driveways filled with wet sand, yet a few doors away signs saying "No Managed Retreat!"
LOL
I absolutely love this view.
Apart from beautiful views, what good comes from living there
Beautiful Video, thank you 🐟
WOW, STUNNING VIEWS!!!!
Thank you for sharing this video
The sound of those waves most be deafening WOW!
Great footage... BEST music ! thanks : ]
Thanks so much.Your videos are awesome!
Хорошая идея укрепления склона бетонной корой с хаотично расположенными карманами с землёй для разведения в них диких кустарников и стелющихся растений!
It is a good idea to strengthen the slope with concrete bark with randomly located pockets with earth for breeding wild shrubs and creeping plants in them!
Wow... this is mesmerizing!
Pretty powerless over Mom nature!!! beautiful film thank you
Beautiful film. The constant roaring breakers are magical, but to the homeowners it must be like being poked in the ribs a million times.
I never knew California had such unique views
Watching this is never enough
Amazing power of the ocean 🌊
So glad to see the update.
Awe inspiring.
Beautifully done♥️
“Nothing is eternal under the Moon”.
Everything that belongs to the Ocean, the Mother Nature will take without asking us.
Super cool footage 🙂👍
So beautiful!
I was there in 2013...great landscape...
Cheers for this video
That beach by the pier used to be sandy. I had two friends jump off and swim to shore.
Amazing views
Ow Yes! Really love the part with the house that you start your film with. Find it very interesting to watch nature's force over time. Thank you and keep it up ;)
Do you think someone lives in that? I saw smoke coming out of the chimney.. 🤔
@@lamppuu1 Good eye!
Yeah, I’m fascinated by that one. I’m impressed by the stairs to the beach (I just assume they go all the way to the beach) that were built with a deck part of the way down. Got my fingers crossed 🤞🏼 for that house.
@@lamppuu1 The home on the edge of the cliff with the stairs, is an old radio station. I'm not sure of the name of it.
Lamentável. O litoral do Pacífico de um sonho mudou para pesadelo.Morar noutras áreas é urgente
Thanks for sharing this
Thanks
This was inevitable and nothing can stop it.
So true!
Cool music
Thank you for sharing. Was curious just how bad it has become since 3 years ago. viewed 8 8 2021
greats shot friend
The Tool song, Aenema, slips into my head every time I see one of these coastal erosion vids.
We have some amazing trailer parks on the CA coast!
The power and force of those waves makes me shudder!
Oh definitely me too!!!
Nice one!
drone flying = excellent
Very well done.
This video needs to go viral.
Passing here to leave that like to strengthen your channel
Install large boulders as riprap to armor the shore against further erosion
Stunning views but I am just thinking what happens when there's a hurricane?
I would gladly live there!!!
Amazing to watch the height of the Waves.😮
The Crest of some Waves is as high as the Cliff Face.😲
Imagine living on a High Cliff and having a Wave break onto your patio sending Salt Spray into your Living Room or Bedroom.🫢
Amazing though. I would love to live there
Thanks for the music. It helped as I watched this video. (4/6/21)
Great video.. good luck to those home owners.. Nice background music.. What was the name of the music?
Such beauty....And Such devastation!
What happens to the debris once it hits the water? Heavey machinery poses too high a risk. Can they burn the houses down? Or would that be too unsafe/costly?
🥱I’m going to visit that city again before it’s completely gone.
WOW!!!
I tried to push the properties back, up and diagonal. Does it look different? To me some look to be adjusted but not sure if it is permanent.
