Good info. Thank you. Your garden looked great. Are you still gardening? For gardeners who will use a spray nozzle or shutoff valves in their irrigation system, the Seaflo line of pumps work great. They have an on-demand feature that will automatically shutoff when pressure builds in the line and automatically turn back on when pressure decreases (i.e. squeeze the nozzle or open a valve). These are robust pumps used in RVs and large boats/yachts. Either 12V or 120V. Great for solar power setup.
Personally i would have piped them together lower on the barrels as well maybe a couple of inches up from the bottom so they can all stay at the same level only using the middle spigot and which would allow you to use gravity as the weight would be the combined capacity of the 3 barrels
that's a pretty good idea.. All you need is a 3 gallon per minute or 180 gallon per hour submersible fountain pump which might cost $10 shipped to give good flow, enough to hook up to a consumer low pressure washer. If you are going to add a pressure washer to this setup, include a water filter between the pump and the pressure washer. Instead of 3 rain barrels, maybe better to just get one IBC food grade tote, if you have the space for it
Washing machine hoses have female connections on both ends. They come steel braided as well. The hose itself can be a full diameter or a thinner diameter which you want to avoid if possible.
I’m still doing old school because I had many upgrades done to the property new driveway, gate, etc...at the time I’m recycling water from washing machine that has soap on it to the vegetable garden keeps down the bugs and ants. Anyways thanks for the reminder need to purchase the 250 gallon tube that will be placed next to the greenhouse. Will add gutters that will drain into the tube so that I may collect from the greenhouse that’s closer to the vegetable garden. I will eventually put it on my channel...kit. I don’t post much on it yet I do post. So no for now to answer your question yet it will when I do it🥰👍🏾
Thanks for the video. It has given me some ideas. I have a number or barrels and have been using a sump pump which is a pain to keep dragging it from one to the other. The transfer pump seems so much easier. Have you made any other videos on how you set up to water your garden? What type of hose and spraying system do you use?
I use a submersible pump 1200 GPH a hooked to a digital timer which runs for 7 minutes in the morning. I hook the 3 barrels using an old garden hose using the siponing principle, Gives me about a weeks worth watering so I be away on vacation. If I need to be away for longer period I can hook up a couple of extra barrels. System worked great when I took a vacation to the Redwoods National Forest and Lassen Volcanic Park in earlier mid July.
You definitely should connect the barrels from the bottom area or when the barrel you are pumping from goes low you will then need to connect the pump to a different barrel. They cannot work together being piped together from the top.
I guess the idea is that if you connect them at the bottom, then the potential energey of EACH full barrel is transferred to the next barrel through the pipe in the bottom. If the pipes are in the top, only a fraction of the total potential energy is being transferred from each one?
I'm working on a solar charged 12v transfer pump system right now. I'm hoping to be able to water my yard with rain water in the near future. How do you deal with powdery mildew on your squash leaves? My pumpkins in the back yard are having a rough go this year.
So I see 2 problems. You have a spigot at bottom of only one barrel which means you have two barrels collecting water for no apparent reason. Unless those barrel are connected in so way that I can’t see through some pipes that are close to the bottom of the barrel, you’re only getting water from one of those barrels and then you have to wait for more rain water to get more rain in the barrel. Secondly, unless you have a screen on the pipe serving as overflow, mosquitoes will literally fly up the tubes and lay their eggs in the water. Connecting the barrels with pipe at the bottom of each barrel in series with each other should give you plenty of pressure so that you can do without a pump.
Good tip , i see a small problem. The way you elevated your rain barrels are bad. Ita the weakest part of the bricks. It will collapse over time.btw i use a gravity auto watering system with a timer.
My setup is similar to yours, but I use a submersible pump 1200 GPH a hooked to a digital timer which runs for 7 minutes in the morning. Also rather than hooking up the barrels with PVC, I used an old garden hose using the siponing principle effect which allows me to clean the barrels at the end of season. My three barrels holds enough water to last a week which allows me to go on vacation or be away for a few days. I can use the pump to transfer rain water from my 3 275 gal totes to refill the barrels when needed..
lift those barrels 3 feet higher so you won't need the pump...that's gravity feed...at the moment you don't have grafaty feed as you actually pumping water with an electric pump.
Not to mention that the city water here in Asheville North Carolina will absolutely kill almost all of your vegetables much less anything else… I am ashamed to be a resident of a place like this with glacial water sources turned into the crap that they do. We should be on par with Aspen when it comes to water treatment for consumption… But then there is that 1960s talk about “dental caries“ people still have not realized that consuming fluoride makes your bones brittle exacerbating osteoporosis and arthritis… Thanks for the videos, cheers!
They r collecting it from the roof barrels due to thinking about placing a screen mallss on top of the barrel container and collect a greater amount of water and lot cleaner . I sugest to all collect their rain waters.. they won't regrets it
1:15 😂😂😂😂 I don’t have enough gravity. Yep, there is no such thing dear lady! It’s air pressure, not magic gravity that „pushes“ down on the water. Water always seeks the lowest point under the pressure of the air. It’s heavier than air. That’s why it flows downhill eventually ending up in the ocean. Yes, the ocean is completely level and doesn’t curve magically around a ball spinning space.
I asked that question to my step dad. He was an water waste management engineer for many years. He said depending on the age of the roof and gutters, the sun will have baked off any potential chems that might leech out years ago. My roof is a few years old, so I'm not concerned.
It costs 37 cents to fill a 55 gallon drum with city water. If you divide that by the cost of the barrels, the pump, etc, you would need to fill 180 barrels a year to cover the cost.
It’s not just what’s in tap water, it’s what’s not in tap water. Rain barrel water like mine where the tops of the barrels are open collect leaves and debris which slowly break down and creates water that is so much healthier for plants. I place floating water plants in and they serve as landing pads for the insects that do a lot of good for my garden. Sometimes they die in the barrels also adding to the nutrient levels for plants. I place fish in mine and their poop is great for plants. You don’t get this with city water. The value of my rain water far exceeds that of city tap for all these reasons and more
you save on your water bill but pay more for electricity running the pump. shit, water is so scarce, we are down to our last trillion billion litres of it.
@Redheaded Stranger well that's what happens when you are a vegan. the brain doesn't get enough protein and then you start to go in ever decreasing circles.
Love how simplified you made this.
No 20-30 minute documentary series...just meat and potatoes. Thank you.

You could also just use a fish rank pump with a timer. Uses way less electricity and they are cheaper than transfer pumps

Thank you! This was very helpful!
Thank you for this, I bought the wrong pump which was frustrating, now I'm on a mission.
I use an Aldi electric pump with my 2000 litre water tank, works a treat :)

Yup. Bottom connection is best. Also she should have her downspout go into the barrel, imo.

Hello there, how big of a thank is each one.?
With your setup isn't there the opportunity for the last barrel that has the spigot to empty while the first barrel might be full?
I just used a garden hose as a siphon to keep them even.
Where do I get a pump like that?
Rain in Texas , area no rain in New BIGGER Water Drum
Thanks for the good help

Did it work? I only need a slow drip too and i wonder if I really need the machine.
Three feet is not enough to replicate municipal pressure.

What keeps the chemicals from the asphalt on your roof from contaminating your garden?

The chemicals wash off the roof onto your yard anyway.
Your barrels brings all the water to the yard....and their like...it's better than yours.

You are watering your plants with plastic poison. The barrel should be metallic with no paint to avoid any toxicity.
