Home to the US nuclear bombers which kept Western Europe safe from Cold War armageddon.
Upper Heyford was one of the largest US Air Force bases in Europe, housing bombers that carried NATO's intermediate-range nuclear weapons.
Today, parts of the site are protected as scheduled monuments of national importance, as this is one of the oldest bases in the world with more than 100 years of history.
First used by the Royal Flying Corps in 1916 the airbase was later and more significantly used by United States Airforce as a UK base for strategic bombers, tactical reconnaissance, fighter and fighter-bomber aircraft. The airbase’s flight line was officially closed on 15th December 1993 and in January 1994 the final aircraft was transferred without personnel or equipment, to Carolina, USA. These days the airbase is occupied by rare bird species such as the Peregrine Falcon and Skylark, and houses various business Many of the shops have returned and service the local community, the hospital has been demolished along with other abandoned buildings to make way for new houses

This is awesome. I worked with all those cars for 6 yrs, you have shown me more than I ever knew existed. Thanks for rekindled happy memories
I was stationed there from 1980-1983. This video bring back a lot of very good memories. The buildings shown at the beginning and end were a POW camp during WWII. When I was there part of it was used the as the school for the dependent kids. I was an aircraft mechanic so was all over the flightline, it really hasn't changed much. All the major buildings I remember are pretty much still there. I remember working at the Victor Alert area where we had 9 F-111E's each loaded with 2 B-61 nuclear bombs. Yes, I touched the nuclear bombs, cool huh. At 3:10 shows part of the old Victor area, the new Victor can be seen (barely) at 7:08 at the top left. Good times.
I was at Heyford from 1973-1977. As a crew chief I worked Yellow A and Yellow C flights in support of the 79th Tigers. I also worked Victor Alert as much as they would let me(food was better) lol. I miss those days and the friendships I had. Looks very different to me but it was a different Era then.

84-87, go Skyking football!
Decommissioned military installations are interesting places for aerial videos. Nice flight and thanks for sharing. What's with all the cars? Maybe a car brokerage business?
I find them very interesting addy, especially when they’ve played a part of the Cold War. As to the cars, they are in storage, and come straight from the production line, before they are shipped to the garage forecourts.
@@TheHampshireFlyer The cars are BCA (British car auctions) they are mainly 2nd hand
Amazing footage!! Beautiful shots, well done! Check my latest drone video :) Subscribed!
