    I own a 2011 Outlander Sport and to tell the truth it is the best car I ever owned. I keep seeing reviews that say the engine is underpowered and noisy etc. This car has plenty of power and acceleration. I love the CVT transmission - it is so smooth - accelerates more like an electric car because there is no sensation of shifting. This car cost me about $3000 less than a comparable car and had great features such as heated seats, heated mirrors, 18" alloy wheels, smart key start system, and some great HID headlights. And if you really want to have some fun shift into manual shift mode and use the paddle shifters! I've driven it in 10" deep snow and it goes quite well considering it has "all Weather" tires on it and not real snow tires. Drove it across Illinois last January - the interstate was covered in 1 -3 inches of solid ice. The 4WD and traction control system worked great.

      Don't forget to service the transmission & get a tune up just did mine at 138,500 miles. Runs like a dream biggest repair cost was a new computer $800.

    I've driven both cars before and the Outlander is way fun to drive and nimble! Crosstrek with AWD system feels solid, but sluggish transmission, like driving with studded tires wont coast. As soon as you let up the gas, it quickly slows down.

    3 years with my ASX 2011, cero problems. It doesn't vibrate, smooth drive. It has a good acceleration, you just need to learn how to do the shifting with the paddle shifters. Yes, some times you will feel a slowdown, but just shift 2 levels down and it will quickly accelerate perfectly.

    My front wheel drive 2014 Mitsu OS with manual transmission get around 29-32mpg hwy at 70-75mph. Country back roads I can get 32-35mpg all day long. The engine is indeed unpolished but is only rough when you push it, otherwise it is just as smooth as a Subie boxer. After about 5k miles it feels broken in and as a result smoother. The car rides plush yet grips very well in the corners. Steering unfortunately has no feel. The Mitsu is the best buy hands down and you get a 10yr/100k powertrain warranty. With incentives, you are looking at $17-18k. A bargain for this class.

  • @bigjimbrockington
    @bigjimbrockington 10 лет назад +10

    I did the same shopping a few months back and actually purchased the Mitsu for
    my mother.
    The 2014 Mitsu engine received upgrades and it is so smooth at idle you can not hear it run and that is in the ES AWD. It also received more sound insulation. You feel no vibration in the pedal or steering wheel.
    On a 240 mile trip with over 700 pounds of stuff I averaged 31 mpg for the trip. Interstate and 2WD use.
    I liked both vehicles but honestly after much research I could not go with the Subaru. Inferior warranty and the shocking part was the maintenance cost were on the line of an Audi. Very high- very high indeed. Mitsu was very inexpensive to service.

    One year and 10K miles on a XV Crosstrek with 5spd manual - just love the car, great to drive, very economical, goes anywhere, not a single repair issue.
    We bought it to tow behind a Winnebago - the 5pd is one of the few you can get that you can do this with. The car will also pull up to a 1500lb trailer as well. Lots of versatility here.
    The Desert Khaki color is fantastic.

    it's a BOXER engine not BOXTER. People so often confuse the 2. this engine was not developed by Porsche. it describes the way the engine pistons fire, side to side, as opposed to up and down.

    Hey, An Aussie here, I bought on of those outlander sports, except here in Aus it's called an ASX, I got the 5 speed manual, 2.0L petrol and I love it, if I could have afforded the 2.2L turbo diesel i may have but the petrol has a fair bit of pepper in it if you have a go at it.

    I think the bonus with both cars is the light offroad capabilty, and descent fuel economy in a small package. I think lower cost of ownership and one the best new car warranties give the Mitsubishi the edge. Both are very cool either way.

    I bought a 2015 Mitsu Outlander Sport ES in Nov 2014. Seemed okay at first. Clean interior styling and a nice exterior styling. Smoother ride over our bumpy midwest roads than I expected. But then I noticed things I didn't care for. Steering was a fight around 35-40mph -- stiff and heavy, made my left shoulder sore. The Mitsu felt like a larger vehicle-- now in retrospect I realized that's because of the long wheelbase for this size vehicle.
    Driver's side mirror was warped and had a weird wide-angle appearance. In fact, both side mirrors, no matter how I positioned them, created blind spots.
    Lots of wind noise at speed, but that bothered the wife more than me. I like white noise.
    Doors clunky and stiff to open, like out of adjustment.
    I never did figure out where the oil filter was located.
    The "roads may be icy" beeped every time I turned on the vehicle-- no way to disable.
    Had the CVT. Gas pedal had that dead feeling like eco mode on the Prius I used to own. I had to press down significantly on the pedal to get any decent amount of power, and then it was too much power. It's a safety issue when you are waiting to turn left and you need moderate power--but pressing halfway gives you nothing. It really felt like I was fighting the gas pedal to do what I wanted--very non-linear feel.
    The "4WD" was not really 4WD -- it was AWD. It has two modes, "auto" and "lock' -- which I find misleading because "lock" is not "lock" like on real 4WD. But no matter which 4WD mode I chose, it fishtailed badly in snow when pulling into traffic. And once I had to brake quickly in the snow, and it slid -- I didn't hear anti-lock brakes going ..weird.
    So with under 2000 miles on the Mitsu, I traded it in for a 2015 Crosstrek. Now admittedly, the Crosstrek looks like a car and feels smaller inside than the Mitsu. The side mirrors on the Crosstrek are smaller. The road feel is a tad harsher, but only a very small tad. Still better over potholes than the Prius. However, the mirrors on the Crosstrek are flat and have no warps. No blind spots when adjusted correctly, despite being smaller. No weird wide-angle feel on driver's mirror. No beep about icy roads when I start up the Crosstrek. Gas pedal has a smooth and linear feel--it does exactly what I want. I tested it in snow--very good handling. No fishtailing. And the oil filter is in plain sight under the hood.
    My Crosstrek does have condensation in the headlamps--that will have to be fixed. Also, I'm not fond of the exterior styling (that's why I chose the Mitsu at first). But ultimately, the drive quality made my final choice. I like the interior of the Crosstrek, and I will spend more time looking at the inside than the out, so perhaps the exterior styling is more forgivable.

  • @Universal.G

    I own the 2014 rvr. My last car was a 5 spd altima with the 3.5 v6 The rvr is no drag car. But by all means its not slow. Dont know why reviwers keep saying that. It's a great car. Everyone complains that it's slow. It's not. It also doesn't have a whine coming from the cvt . And the paddle shifter are not useless. I barely use the brakes because I downshift with them all the time. And when putting it into sport mode the car is also much quicker using the paddles. I took the rvr off road on a very technical trail, no problems what so ever with a mud pit. Ground clearance is great as well.

  • @brandonmullins4557
    @brandonmullins4557 10 лет назад +2

    CVT "shifts" -- that's weird since CVT does not have gears, rather, drive cones that continuously vary the transmission drive ratios from the engine to the output shaft... :) That being said, the engine does tend to try and change the ratio at ~45mph to conserve fuel requiring increased throttle to compensate... that's my only complaint with the CVT (and I agree, compared to other CVTs, this one feels the most natural).

  • @cruisingprimate1072
    @cruisingprimate1072 10 лет назад +2

    Just two questions. What do you mean by shifting while talking about the Subaru, there is no shifting in CVT since it doesn't have gears like traditional transmissions? The other is vibration from the accelerator pedal in the Mitsubishi, it's electronic, no throttle cable, what was making it vibrate?

  • @greekgod200486
    @greekgod200486 11 лет назад +3

    in the video he kept saying the crosstrek's cvt would stay at like 3500 rpm and then shift down... its a cvt it doesn't shift unless you have it in manual mode. it stays at that rpm to give you the best power to get to the speed desired depending on how hard you us the gas pedal. i have a crosstrek myself and i love it. i test drove the nissan rouge with a cvt before buying my crosstrek and the cvt on that was horrible.

    I think there is more to the price than the MSRP. Suburu almost never have any deals whereas Mitsubushi does all the time. For example, right now they have a $1500 cash bonus on the Outlander sport so the ES model with automatic is 17.3k whereas the cheapest automatic model of the suburu (2.0I premuim) is 22.7K. That's a 5.4 thousand dollar difference!!!!! (these are prices found using Truecar in the NYC area. )

      Where I live a local dealer gets about 19k for AWD the price vs a subaru is closer to 3000 difference but thats still a big canyon plus like you said Mitsubishi constantly throws deals whereas subie dosent and in today's economy you want the most for your dollar

    I'm impressed with Subaru's all-wheel-drive system. it performs better than my 04 Blazer 4 wheel drive system. I wish I could find a small SUV with a body on frame system. I want to have the options to be able to tow or put a snow plow on it. I wish there was a channel that someone did a old car review. I would like to see on how some of these cars hold up over time. I would like to see reviews of cars over two hundred and thousand miles and learn what type of issues the cars had through its lifetime

    Price is my issue out my way Mitsubishi has a volume dealer he gets outlanders in 50 to 60 at a time his avg price is around 19k for one with mid level trim and AWD the subaru dealers here are smaller and as a result tend to order top tier trim cars that they demand top dollar for ( people do pay it) my current daily driver an 08 accent has a liscence built mitsu engine and it runs fine so for me its simple I would go for the outlander cause its got the better deal

    I have to admit that when we were looking at vehicles in this segment I didn't even consider Mitsubishi.
    I bought a 2014 Crosstrek Premium for my wife and a 2015 Crosstrek Limited for myself.
    That is mostly based on the fact that you see lots of old Subarus on the road but not too many old Mitsus. I simply don't like how they age.
    That being said I like the styling on the Outlander Sport! -Lose that colored band across the grill and make it all black grill. That would look badass.
    What is also impressive is how well they integrated the sub woofer compared to Subaru's, which by comparison looks like they simply tossed a box into the back with no regard for how vehicles are used.
    Very interesting comparison between the two vehicles.

I can speak to this because I own a My2017 yr model. Yes, the gas pedal here in our AZ Summers is kinda lack luster with the parocidic A/C in use..😄. Not bad review, but as a Subaru XV owner I can tell you the MPG's are way out. The PZEV system works by running the engine at higher RPM's when it is cold, so this kills MPG's on short trips, (seriously you might only get 17 to 22 MPG if you do less than 5 miles,) and it is putting way more wear and tear on the engine. Also, when cold it seems to have much less power, so making left turns in my experience can be dangerous.

    The Subaru actually has fake shift points because the trans was so smooth. Seems the consumer wanted to feel like it was shifting. The Subaru is quiet, smooth to the point of making one think its slightly underpowered which it really isn't. Winter driving with the Subaru is without compare.. Mitsubishi is a fine car but needs a few more years to evolve.

    • @TheGatesshrack
      @TheGatesshrack 9 лет назад

      This guy definitely doesnt know what a cvt is, cvt's don't shift at all. Any "shift points" are just to make them feel more traditional, its all computer controlled.

    • @plainlybasic2300
      @plainlybasic2300 9 лет назад

      Subaru transmissions actually fake shift. Making them feel more natural.

    • @SteedDigital1
      @SteedDigital1 8 лет назад

      +Dylan Piekarski natural to what? Cause it's not natural for cvt to shift. It's an issue with people not being able to handle change. Even giving up the benefits of a cvt just to feel better.

    • @plainlybasic2300
      @plainlybasic2300 8 лет назад

      The shifting only happens when you ask it to aka: you put it in sport mode or whatever. And it makes it more natural in the sense that you actually feel it doing something, rather than just sit at high Revs forever and not go any faster when you need it to. Most cvt's, with the acception of Subaru and actual performance oriented versions, are slow at outright acceleration. And everyone wants the efficiency of cvt's, there is no argument about that, but to what cost of driving performance, and enjoyment? If you buy a vehicle with the more powerful version of an engine, you want the better performance, not the efficiency. Long story short, adding the shift points gives people more enjoyment while still allowing better efficiency.

    • @SteedDigital1
      @SteedDigital1 8 лет назад

      Dylan Piekarski I can assure you as an owner of a 2015 impreza, it doesn't give you a choice. Even cars with Xmode will still fake shift in every setting. they just change the way it fakes the shifts and what rpm it sits at.
      fuck that. when I get on the freeway and get to 55 and the car goes from 5k rpm and drops by 1k rpm give or take(it's never the same) I lose power, I feel the car lag and I have to bring it back up again. it's frustrating because I know I could be to speed quicker then the software is allowing the engine. CVT's would be fun as fuck if they didn't fake shift, resulting in moments of lower power output.
      The absolute only time I can get it to keep a steady rpm while gaining is on a flat and at 2.5k since there isn't any room for it to drop the rpm. at 3k it will still do it though and drop off about 500-700rpm. It's a pain for me and others who understand what an engine could do if this was not holding it back.
      I'm fine with Xmode, I'm 100% ok with having options. but for those who buy base models or don't want fake shifts, they should give us nothing but pure CVT experience. I would be ecstatic to have a car I can hold at an rpm while gaining then have a magic button to do fake shifts or low for simulated low gear off road (which they all have). but no option.. it's a mistake.

      sorooshusa Even though they're the same class of cars, they're not really a good comparison. The EVO is heavily computerized, while the STI in comparison is archaic. That doesn't mean the STI is bad by any means, but the driver is getting far less assistance.
      Maybe things have changed though. It's been a while since I've seen what features either of them have. Subaru in general has simpler vehicles (in an electronic perspective) compared to their competition, regardless of class.

      I can't say the Mitsubishi is better in all situations, but I watched a Crosstrek get hopelessly stuck in deep sand that an Outlander Sport went right through.
      Both cars had Yokohama Geolander tires, so it wasn't the tires and if anything, the Subaru driver was more skilled.
      Subaru may be better in some situations on road, but seeing the TFL video and how it gets stuck in sand.
