      Red and splotchy? Yeah, definitely. Ugly? No. Skin is weird, and does odd things sometimes. We can’t be perfect 24/7. Don’t feel bad about it!

    One of my favorite things is how they had the conversation about change, how the Nora he knew was gone, in the past. They also bring up how she used to cry a lot as a kid, and even her husband is shocked. Then it ends with her crying.

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  4 месяца назад +12

      Yeah it was pretty realistic! Every point comes back in some sort of way in the movie, and it’s so beautifully done

  • @ravenlord4

    This really highlights the difference between being in love with someone, and being in love with the idea of someone. When Nora interacts with Hae Sung she toys with the ideas of love about everything that she gave up when she left Korea. But when she is with Arthur she clearly really loves everything that she got in return for what she lost. I'm pleasantly surprised that the movie dealt with this trope maturely and realistically, and that you were brave to explore it with us on your channel ☺

    I love this movie! Something i saw someone mention was that Nora said that Hae Sung would only stare at her when she cried as a kid, and when she moved to Canada she cried a lot, but no one cared so she stopped crying. And the end when she is sobbing, Arthur acknowledges her and embraces her.

    Nora and Hae Sung constantly being separated in the same shot by subway pole, tree limb, sidewalk cracks, stair railings is so crazy to watch back. And Nora being a “crybaby” as a kid but then fully letting her tears go at the end is so real

      To be fair it was a really crowded year so the chances of it coming away with loads of awards, if any, would've been very slim. What was really criminal however was the absurdly low number of nominations it got in the first place - only TWO, with nothing for the score, or cinematography, or Celine Song's direction, or (most egregiously) Greta Lee's performance

  • @trinaq
    @trinaq 4 месяца назад +123

    I liked that they didn't make Arthur the controlling, unlikeable husband, to free up the leads to be together, which they actually alluded to. Also, Greta Lee was robbed of a Best actress nomination.

      I hope most romantic or family comedy/dramas do this more, especially in regards to couples that are separated. Because it goes to show that one side is going to be fine without their ex, and that it's time to move on.

    about sitting next to or across: my husband and i are people of very few words, we like to sit next to each other because that proximity does more for us than words would. but my parents could not stop talking no matter the situation and would always prefer to sit across from each other, i think it just makes for better communication. to me, hae sung does feel like someone who talks less and aurthur feels like someone who talks more, but i wouldn't be able to tell where nora fits. she feels like the type of person who tries to fit where she can, and in that idea, sitting across from aurthur and next to hae sun is perfect for what the others both might want.

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  4 месяца назад +7

      I used to be a strictly “across the table” person, but I’ve grown to understand the appeal of sitting next to your partner. If it’s just me and my partner, I like to sit across, but in a group setting, I like to sit next!
      I also agree with your assessment of Nora, she does try to mold herself to the situation

    Yeah, Sophia. This is the one film where it makes you feel so invested in the story that it makes you think about each phase of it as it goes. The one thing that I admire from it is that like you said, nothing in life will ever go according to plan or it’s not going to go the way you think it’ll be. With so many turns, it can bring so many outcomes like, say that Nora and her family never immigrated to Canada, right? And then what? Sure, they were very close as children but as we grow older, the way how we think and feel changes over time, thus our priorities shifts to one thing to another that we can no longer be with the people that we care about. Therefore, even if that particular scenario had occurred, there was a never a guarantee that those two could’ve ended up together since he knew that she wanted to be more than what she was. As for Arthur, it’s true that it made it feel that he was being pushed to the sidelines because again, this movie was about two people that were going through the motions as time passes by. However, he exceeded to be a character in his own right; one who is supportive and very open-minded that he understood entirely of why she find it difficult to finally let him go since they have been on and off a few times. The way how Nora assured him that although this wasn’t exactly how she pictured her life, it’s one that she’ll never regret or forsaken because she shares it with a man who will be by her side, no matter what. Arthur may not owe her anything else but he owes her, at least, the opportunity to decide whether or not she wants that relationship to continue. To think that I actually recommended this film to another, I’m glad that I get to see this in your point of view.
    Apologies for such a long analysis but knowing that you also express your judgment based on your observations, I trust that you will take this to heart. Speaking of which, when it comes to sitting as a couple, I’d prefer the position where you face your partner directly instead of being shoulder to shoulder because it has that level of intimacy that you’re sharing this moment, for many more to come.

    I really loved this movie. The way it played out was not what I was expecting as well and my expectations were subverted, especially in regards to the character of Arthur who I thought was going to be the typical jealous type. Everything you said in the outro is pretty spot on on how I felt about it. "You make my world so much bigger and I'm wondering if I do the same for you." WHAT A LINE.
    For reasons I won't say/spoil since you haven't seen it yet (at the time of writing this), when Nora recommended Hae Sung to watch Eternal Sunshine, I quietly gasped. I hope you react to that one!

    I enjoyed past lives, like you, I didn't cry that much and don't think it was a crying movie, but a very simple yearning movie. One thing about the time in their twenties, neither of them would have fit each other then too, in my opinion! LDR is such a massive commitment and it was obvious that neither would completely give up their lives for the other, and I think it's very realistic. I get the sense that Haesung especially was very lonely and that contributed to him clinging on to that connection when they were young, and Nora was in a way rejecting that clinginess, that's why Arthur, with his patience and allowing her emotional space, was such a better fit for her because in letting her breathe, she could feel secure in choosing him as well.
    Definitely enjoyed such a realistic portrayal of a complicated relationship! I hope everyone gets an Arthur in their life 😊

    Not gonna lie, kinda wish the movie ended with them in a trouple 😂 In all seriousness, I usually really hate love triangle storylines cause they're just uncomfortable to watch but I actually thought this movie played it well. I really like the direction they took with Arthur. I feel like so many movies and shows go this route where the two main leads are in love but one of them is married and the spouse is a controlling, abusive person so the two leads end up together and it tends to be overdone so I like that Arthur was a very nice and understandable man albeit understandably jealous. The movie kinda felt like the Hunchback of Notre Dame in the sense of the leading man is in love with the girl but the girl ends up with the other man who is actually a nice person.

    Sophia: "I hope [Arthur]'s a secure man."
    Me: 😂😂😂😭😭😭
    I was probably in the wrong frame of mind watching this movie, but I was filled with near horror-levels of anxiety whenever Hae Sung and Nora were on screen together because their chemistry is so good. I was like "Hey. Stop looking at eachother like that. No. Stop being cute. Stop it! STOP IT!"
    As for Arthur, his insecurities kinda' came out of nowhere for me. I relize that the film isn't about his and Nora's relationship itself, but because there was just a time-skip, and we only get a brief glimps of their relationship, and all the conflict comes up in only a couple of dialogue scenes, it made it seem like they've been just going through the motions as a couple without ever discussing this serious stuff that's only coming up just now.
    As for Nora, her desicion in the heartbreaking "Talk to you later." scene made me want to see the results of her choice in a definitive way. Wanting to follow her dreams and accomplish something rather than following "true love" makes sense, but by the end, I couldn't tell whether or not she truly feels fulfilled in that choice. Arthur basically says "Y'know, we got married 'cause whatev, and now we're just kinda' chillin'." So I'm like "Did the spark die (creatively and romantically)?" "Was there ever a spark to begin with, or did she just make herself believe there was one?"
    To me this film was ultimately about enui winning out over passion, and the characters needing to accept this. Whether or not that's the case, either way, I was left pessimistic about Nora and Arthur's relationship by the end. Rather than weathering the storm and coming out the other side, I feel like they've JUST gotten to the rocks.
