It is so hard to navigate through society as a misanthrope. This guy gets it, I'm glad there are people exploring this as a philosophical concept.

I'm the 4th misanthrope. A kind of heart-chilling resignation about ppl. It's not things like murder, war, political corruption and the extreme acts that make despair, although they are truly deplorable. It's the pervasive, incessant small things that I encounter all the type like a death by a thousand cuts. Things like brash ignorance, arrogance, highly regulated personalities, myopic perspectives, vapidness, adherence to status quo norms, systematic mindstates of the masses, banality, being compelled by the mundane, normies, the run of the mill. These traits are so abundant and rewarded it brings me down so bad. Fuck ppl.

I really appreciate the part where Dr. Kidd sums up that most misanthropes (such as myself) toggle between the four described types of misanthropes, as I for one can attest to feeling all of them at given points in my life. I generally love humanity at its best and am constantly disappointed and appalled by the world we've created (bludgeoned) for ourselves. Its incredibly frustrating and depressing when you look at what we are as opposed to the potential for what we could be.

I clicked on this video because I find myself becoming more and more misanthropic as I age. I just turned a young 44 but already I feel like the stereotypical grumpy old woman.
From experiencing the rudeness, unhygienic habits, inconsiderate actions, and the lack of common courtesy in people, I have come to the conclusion. .. the more I interact with people at work, out in public, and even with my own family the more I am becoming less inclined to want to be around people in general.
I know that I'm not perfect and I have my own issues, but I feel like for the most part people in general just don't care which makes things uncomfortable, unpleasant, and unnecessarily hard for others around them.
I haven't lost all my faith in humanity, I've just lost my desire to be around much of it. It's sad, but I really just want to get away from society.
I guess that makes me fall under the label _fugitive_ _misanthrope_ right?
I'm only in the first 20 minutes of the video so I don't know if this question will be covered: are certain regions and countries more prone to misanthropic personalities than others? I am born and raised in the United States and I think that in many ways us Americans are just awful to be around. I have a particular country that I have been wonderlusting for several years. But I wonder would it actually be a social Improvement or just a variation of The Human Condition in the guise of another culture and language?

I think the number one reason why I'm a misanthrope is because no one stands up for the vulnerable who are abused. There's this certain thought that it's better to look the other way than it is to become the one abused/outcasted. But how abuse works is by no one speaking out! In my opinion, they are just as guilty as the ones doing the abuse. Abuse happens in the silence. The cowardice of humans, myself included, is what makes me give up on humanity. Absolutely love this speech! There's not much on this subject so I enjoy anything I can get my hands on.

I don't see how misanthropy looks at the good and the bad to weigh them in the balance. Misanthropy only looks at the bad. Misanthropy is not the same thing as critical philosophy. "Critical" implies an ideal or norm. We criticize humanity's failure to meet our norms. If evil / faults / vices and failings are the norm of humanity then how can one criticize people? It would be extraordinary to criticize humanity for failing to live up to norms one does not think humanity can meet.
In other words: why did you call your ideas "philosophical misanthropy" if you think humanity can do better than misanthropy?
Listening to Ian Kidd talk, it seems he wants to ban all human vices outright. I think more nuanced thinking is needed. There's necessary evil, then there's real evil. There'd endemic evil and evil we can actually do something about. I prefer to concentrate my resources on problems which can be solved.
Why is walking past a homeless person bad? Let's be concrete. Show me evidence how you turned around the life of that homeless person - then lecture me on my failure to do the same. Mere whining about the fate of the homeless, in the abstract, does not count. One simply ends up with the paradox of California; see "San Fransicko", Shellenberger, 2021. Dems spent vast resources to help the homeless while - in practice the number of homeless in California increased year on year.

I'm disappointed by this talk. Although I'm into philosophy, I've been very disappointed by what philosophers produce. Today, I've given up on these endless word-games you philosophers hawk to advance your careers. I recommend one takes up Experimental Philosophy instead. As Experimental Philosophy is grounded in facts about the world and disdains the endless wordy speculation of the philosopher in favour of ideas based on empirical facts.
Focusing on evil is not misanthropy; because one is judging ethically. 1. Judging ethically implies a better world. 2. I welcome looking at the dark-side of life. Yet the people doing this (studying: psychopaths, dark triads, narcissists, cluster Bs, ...) they seem to take a dutiful point of view. Misanthropy does not encourage dutiful behaviour. Instead it seems to lead to a wicked circle of apathy.
Activism is not misanthropy. The very fact the activist is doing something, implies they're doing it because they think - rightly, or wrongly, their actions will lead to a better world. Having said that: many activists seem to have deep contempt for the rest of us! Especially those of us - such as me - who call out their/your bad activism.
We need empirical studies of misanthropy and misanthropes. More of these intellectual speculations - philosophy - only up the confusion quotient. Please tell me what Experimental Philosophy and empirical Psychology have to say about the topic.

I hate everyone and appreciate misanthropes, like them, if they're right, I hate self-deception and being wrong. It's not just morality, I hate stupidity, and I hate it when people don't like beauty. What's not misanthropic is I hate change, I don't like selflessness or altruism and I think some misanthropes are evil because of what misanthropes they are and because they're altruistic, sacrificing themselves or not taking care of themselves, everyone is selfish, there's no good selfless deeds.

Misanthropes think like white people, it seems. The assumptions that our systems and their externalities are innate to us is social darwinist in thinking and strongly challenged by historical and modern societies; especially non-white societies. Misanthrope is a cop out against fighting corrupt systems by blaming "human nature." Likewise, blaming some Mongolian horse herder or Mickmack fisherman for climate change the same way we do BP or Enron is absurd; which is what the Misanthrope does. That said, what was described as eastern misanthropy is not even close to the same beast as the western counterpart; to the point that I disagree with him even putting them in the same category.

I think misanthrope for me is a reason to fight against things like corruption, inequality, and pollution. I believe the politicians don’t always work in the best interests of the people they represent. Also,I think “misanthrope”is a broader premise than “white people”.

Misanthropes think like white people? I don't completely understand what you mean. I think you could have been a bit more specific. Or maybe I'm dumb lol.
I don't think that I think like a white person. I don't completely consider myself a misanthrope. But I'm definitely highly critical of myself and others as a result of constantly having to play a particular type of role throughout most of my life.
This was a direct result of constantly dealing with racism from a very young age by my typically white peers and also having to deal with homophobia by nearly everybody else. If I'm being honest, I feel like my want for a better, kinder society overall is why I feel somewhat jaded/critical when it comes to thinking about other people.
And honestly, this was just the easiest way to try to explain it without all the other nuances that exist alongside it. It feels like its even more complicated then just that. But I don't think id be able to completely explain it in it's entirety In an internet conversation.

What a phenomenally racist and dishonest statement, but hey, it's not misanthropic! Misanthropy and the REASONS for misanthropy cross all racial, temporal and geographic boundaries. How you could possibly extrapolate racial reasoning from this lecture utterly eludes logic...but then racism isn't logical is it?

@@sepharad58 because his logic and reasoning is Kantian in essence, and Kantian thought is deeply white supremacist in nature. And that is because Kantian thought, like it's more ancient Greek counterparts, believed in ideal forms that all existence flows from. Given that Kant wrote a ton on the superiority of white man over everybody else, it does not take a genius to see how Kant's love of race hierarchies bleeds into his philosophy. This brings us back to the pretentious douchebag lecturing in this video. Instead of blaming human systems for creating perverse incentives for bad behavior, he blames an innate human nature and tries to separate himself from the rest by being 'better' and above them. Full circle, this is why I say he speaks and thinks like a white man. Cuz he does.
