Your dad reminds me a lot of my late mah mah, she would teach me about cooking in cantonese. This channel is amazing for a number of reasons.
    1) I am learning to cook Asian food without having to buy it already-processed, which cuts out a lot of the bad stuff processing adds.
    2) The recipes are easy to follow, and easier than I thought they would be to make.
    3) Your dad is a boss, and does things we should all strive for: Cooking wholesome food from scratch, learning an instrument, and not over-consuming.
    4) Family inclusion is so wholesome. I love to see all of you enjoying your dad's cooking :)

    I tried this the other day, cooking for family. And because I didn't want to buy chicken cubes for this recipe, I ended up doing it the hard way and boiling chicken and vegetables to make chicken soup base. Definitely did not turn out as expected but, I also did not put in a lot of salt. But, it was a fantastic and refreshing soup nonetheless! Your dad's trick about adding water to the eggs was amazing! Softest egg "flower" I've ever done.

    • @MadeWithLau
      @MadeWithLau  3 года назад +1

      Yay that's so great to hear Avery! That's totally a legitimate way to make it - my dad usually just suggests the chicken cubes/powder for simplicity but homemade broth is great and healthier! Your dad is so talented. He cooks, he plays the flute, he’s a great teacher.... what more can he do? Thanks for sharing and preserving your dad’s recipes and insights for us. 🙏🏻
    Also I noticed your dad’s style of talking is very gentle and relaxed. He’s very soothing to listen to. The way he talks (word choices) reminds me of a Cantonese version of my grandma (she spoke Taishanese). I miss my grandma so much and I don’t know if it sounds odd, but watching your dad reminds me of her. It’s almost therapeutic.
    Everything he said about how hard it was to have eggs and meat on the table and the ration coupons is exactly how my mom and grandma explained to me how tough life was in China. You sharing all these conversations is precious. I really wish I thought about recording all of these type of conversations. Now it’s too late for me anyway. It’s good you are preserving family history. They will be so precious to hold onto and pass onto your son.
    Sorry I babbled too much 😅 This video got me pretty emotional.

It is a common nickname used for children (but not girls since it means son) but as they grow up, their families and relatives may still call them that. I just learned that egg flower soup is not just the wonderful "exotic" I learned to love from this vid, but there is a version that is traditional to my countries cuisine!!! I have never encountered it as it sadly is with many old recipes, most people never got to know them....
    My countries Version uses about 3 table spoons of semolina to thicken the soup that got a bit roasted in some butter, uses nutmeg for taste a broth on chicken or vegetable basis and then gets egg dropped into it ^^

    always love this hong-kong style egg drop soup, which is different than the deep-yellow-color Chinese-style egg drop soup that you see in most of chinese restaurants.

    I've always wondered how to make Chinese egg soup. When I traveled around the world and was tired of homesickness, I remember comforting myself by eating warm egg soup at a local Chinese restaurant even though I'm a Korean. Thank you for sharing this nice recipe. This is simple, basic and probably most traditional way.
