- I know a lot of you guys have been asking about my distro, what DE and WM I’m using, what themes and icon packs - so, I decided to just show you. All cards on the table now and links in the description. We’re gonna set it all up from scratch, and then talk a bit about how to automate all of this in the future, what "ricing" is and why you should probably stop calling it that.

I kept hearing from other people how you can make any distribution look like any other distribution. Finally, there's somebody to show it!
The term "Ricing" comes from the car mod world. A "rice burner" was a super small, underpowered, predominately asian car/motorcycle that enthusiasts for some reason love to buy and trick out with tons of crazy modifications that are entirely aesthetic with no performance gain (because the engine was so bad that no mods could be made to them/no parts exist to mod them). Nowadays the term "ricer" just means any car owner who modifies their car with entirely too many visual mods and no performance improvements, resulting in a car that looks very flashy without the power to back it up.

I already tweaked gnome to my liking but this video did introduce me to unsplash. The days of me scrolling though crap watermarked wallpapers on google are over because there's so many good, high resolution wallpapers to choose from! It's amazing!
Another good site like unplaced is called pexels give it a shot, also images form these sites are not copyrighted I use them as assets for websites I make as a side hustle
Wallhaven is even better IMO

one of the best pop os customisation guide I have seen over the Internet.
It's really cool how granular these instructions are, I like how you note every step, shortcut, and alternate way of doing things. Good documentation is important and you've done a stellar job here.

That's not what "ricing" means. It comes from the world of car mods in which people will take small Japanese vehicles like the Honda Civic and kit it out with a bunch of aesthetic changes that make it "look fast". These cars are then involved in street races. That is where people got the idea of creating the acronym. The acronym came after the term. It is not the origin of the term. It's called "ricing" because of the association with Asia.
I like the Mac OS Dock, that magnifies the icons when you hover your cursor over them. A tutorial on how to set it all up to look and act like a real Mac OS.
Nice one. I love my Pop OS and while I love vanilla gnome setup, there is no distro that suits my need. So I made it look like ubuntu and it looks pretty but not as clean as these (I disabled Pop Cosmic extension for vanilla gnome like setup). I'd also add Night Theme Switcher extension its very underrated. Also thanks for that dconf tips and this setup looks very clean
I didn't realise gnome was this tweakable.
Question:
If there's a large Gnome / PopOS update, does it tend to break the theming? Is it finicky to stay on top of? or is it more set'n'forget?
For the most part, updates tend not to break anything. Recently some shell themes broke GNOME's new menu but they continued to work fine everywhere else, it's mostly set and forget and if anything breaks it's usually just an update to fix :3
@@Sophed Yes! Though, Pop is moving away from GNOME next year, and it's unclear how themes are going to work.

Oh that's interesting. I learned about the term ricing just a few weeks ago (in a car enthusiast channel). Didn't know it was also used in computers. But I guess that makes sense. Ricers for the visuals (UI) and uhh racers for the performance (hardware?)
The word basically got popularized everywhere. It doesn't really make anymore initial contextual sense but when you already know it, you know what it means
Now ricing as in people doing unnecessary stuff. For fun.
Cinnamon user here. My panel is on the right side and hides until I need it. Simple Yellow Circle icon set and Flat GTK Red-Darkest theme (Pitch black with red accent).

PopOS is properly still on some older Gnome version. Newer version of gnome will not work with this. You can set theme for legacy applications (GTK2/3), but not for GTK4, which is most of the Gnome Stack by now.
but pop os isn't using gnome, but cosmic de. which has a lot of gnome components
@@arianitonline8748 What? No!. They are working on their own desktop, but that is far from done. PopOS is using Gnome with a Cosmic touch, mostly some Gnome Extensions.
Also what I mentioned is not a Gnome issue. It's a GTK issue, and no desktop or extension changes how GTK4 theming works.

everything works except for 2 things.
Icon pack - flattery indigo doesnt give the indigo color but a bluish color, while the 'faltery dark one gave the Indigo color. the other one is the minimize maximize and close symbols or icons arent like mac and look like windows ones instead (only in browsers) but i notice in the video that his browsers arent like that.
any advice for me ?
Tried it, unfortunately the dracula theme works for some apps and not for others like Firefox and brave. Even the cursor is one theme sometimes and another one in other apps
What kind of program do you use to open apps using keyboard shortcuts ?

I thought "ricing" comes from the "rc" at the end of some config files
alternative:
sudo apt install kde-plasma-desktop
use sddm instead of gdm3
You just got a sub dconf is good option i am gonna try out this theme and icons of my fedora, can you tell me the name of the menu that appears in the middle? It's really handy
adding a theme does not give my and option in the appearance tab in tweaks :(
I have recently dual-booted my PC with POP OS but while i am using it the screen starts flickering whenever I make a cursor move. This only happens in laptop display but not on any external monitor. Can anyone help me fix this issue.

This looks sexy, but soon pop is going to move to rust based cosmic desktop , so these customisations won’t work mostly
How did you get ride of the "show applications" button on the dock (the one with 9 dots in a grid)?
Right click on it and unpin - if that is not possible, then from Settings > Desktop > Dock > Show Applications Icon in Dock (untoggle)

It's weird that ricing got defined as such, it use to refer to folks who tricked out Japanese cars but I guess being a graybeard ... I forgot to check out the def. I never use the term.

lol my dad had to stop me after i mentioned the term and yeah… i was shocked. Can honestly say they i don’t think a single person uses that term with ANY kind of ill intent, but yeah the etymology here is a bit unfortunate haha
@@scally9341 Yeah, it's like the term based ... that was used along with basehead to refer to folks who did crack or freebased cocaine. I still can't use the term without thinking I just called someone a crackhead. :D

Your meaning for "ricing" is totally wrong. It actually comes from the saying, "ricing a car" or a "riced out car". Its a derogatory term for a overly modified Japanese car.

i saw another video in youtube and only installed the pop os nvidia thing this month. we have to disable secure boot in bios and fastboot option from the power settings in control panel, before even trying to install it. it works perfectly for me cause i did it exactly like them. you could try too. i dont know the name of the channel but you could see them using a hp laptop to install it (that's the one)
