He went to great lengths at the time to stress that it was pure fiction, that he had a great relationship with both his parents - (and no personal experience from severe depression or heavy medication). They are both psychiatrists (therapists?) though, so he took some inspiration from their expertise.
Yeah this movie affected a HOST of Gen X'rs and Older (and younger I guess) millennials.....but especially us because a ton of us were the first permanently medicated kids. The shit back then was just numbing agents. This movie came out around the time many of us threw that shit out the window and got our sea legs.
